Is there anything you would recommend to substitute for the jalapeño? My children can’t handle the heat of hot peppers.
You could just leave it out. Or remove all seeds. Won’t be as hot. You could do half a pepper just to give it flavor.

It always makes me cringe when I see people using their bare hands to handle hot peppers. Because whenever I do that, even after washing my hands with soap multiple times, later on I go to rub my eye or touch my lips and I still get a burning sensation wherever I touch, which is really awful anywhere near your eyes. How do you get all the pepper oils off your fingers?
