  • @timomastosalo
    @timomastosalo Před 5 lety +938

    Xylitol is actually for teeth cleansing. It's a sugarlike substance with actually works like tooth paste - imagine that. So nowadays most of our chewing gums in Finland are made with xylitol. Good idea after eating, is to finish with the xylitol chewing gum. They taste good - mint and peppermin flavors are very fitting, and protect your teeth. But don't give them to dogs! Xylitol is lethal for dogs.
    Only problem for people is that in large quantities they would stir up your stomach. But that would mean several hundred milligrams a day: like maybe eating that whole box you got. Just have never heard of anyone mix their stomach with it in Finland, and I'm closing my 50's. But this week on a doctor's video about the health benefits of xylitol ('ZY-litol'), one foreigner woman commented her stomach reacted. So it might be if your stomach didn't receive it as a kid, it might be a bit more tender to react.
    The same thing is with rye: many English people don't eat it, so their stomachs react strongly to rye. Whereas in Finland people have eaten rye for some thousands of years. Same thing with xylitol, which is easy to get from birch trees, but it can be subtracted from maize and other plants as well. Rye bread loaf weighs 4-6 times more than a white bread loaf of the same size - more of course if we talk about toast bread. I never remember seen fluffy rye bread, the lighter versions are just softer and malleable, but it' difficult to make rye bread really airy. So it's much sturdier stuff and really fills your stomach.

    • @Pretendi
      @Pretendi Před 5 lety +12

      That is untrue. It's how it was marketed 20 years ago. The truth is that Xylitol is just a sweetener not as bad for your teeth as sugar. It does not clean your teeth.

    • @nellihatonen8657
      @nellihatonen8657 Před 5 lety +100

      @@Pretendi you are kind of right. Xylitol does not clean teeth but it has healt effects. Xylitol after eating is good because it stops acid attacs towards your teeth (happohyökkäyksiä)

    Salmiakki is liquorice with ammonium chloride. It's mainly eaten in Nordic countries, Germany and Netherlands. For several decades salmiakki was sold in pharmacies as a cough medicine, but salmiakki sweets were made in Finland already in 1930s. You either hate them, or love them. I think Finnish people get used to salmiakki as a child and just can't live without those sweets.

    I'm from Finland, and I like watching candy tasting videos, because I always wait for the "Tyrkisk Peber" or whatever Salmiak (ammonium chloride) candy there happens to be included. Yes, that's where the salty taste comes from, look it up. "Why would anyone eat this!?" -Because we like it! I smile at the reactions foreigners get from eating them. Watching this also made me want to buy all the chocolate I really like. Well, it's Midsummer festival here in a couple of days, so maybe I should! The flavors are so different that I can't even keep a favorite I'd stick to. I tend to alternate between Geisha, Jim, Da-Capo and Pätkis, usually buying what's happens to be on sale in one of the shops I go to. Also, due to Midsummer festival Taffel savory snacks are on sale in almost every shop you can find, they're pretty much just competing on who has the best sale on them. Snacks like that are a bit of a thing here for this festival, as they're easy and tasty, and nobody wants to spend all night cooking when you're supposed to be enjoying the longest day(s) of the year (in the Northern hemisphere) in whatever way you fancy.
    With all this said, I have to add that licorice is my absolute favorite candy, and Finland has at least 50 different flavors of it available. That is not counting the 50+ different textures and flavors of black licorice we have too. I say 50 but I'm sure there's well over a hundred if you start looking, not to mention there's been MANY in the past that are no longer sold. We used to have hundreds of small local factories that all made their own licorice, which of course results in different balance of ingredients, and therefore flavor. And despite giant companies like Fazer, the "buy local" thing is still surprisingly big in the licorice business. They're often sold in summer in market squares of most towns and cities during market days, when farmers and other local producers sell their goods.
