Most of those sweets aren‘t commom German sweets. Wasa is Swedish, Giotto is Italian, these pretzels are supposed to be american-style. It must have been her personal taste. There were several ones I didn‘t even know. I know Corny but not all those flavours. Kind of sad that many iconic sweets like Ritter Sport, Yogurette or Hanuta were missing

The original 100g Milka chocolat (the basic, the first one) is produced from Lörrach in Germany. Some other milka products are also produced in Austria, France, etc.
Since Milka was buyed by Mondolez, you can call it an american product.

I think one of the reasons why there is no "oh German food" reaction is because it is way harder to categorize "German food". Every region has it's own specialities, plus, it naturally overlaps with what the neighbours do. Meaning the food in the North is mostly fish-based and heavily influenced by the Danish cuisine (which is very underrated, btw), the east has eastern European influences, the west has been influenced by France and Belgium and the South overlaps with Austrian cuisine. What a lot of people think about when they hear "German cuisine" is actually the Bavarian cuisine.
To be fair, though, Germans support this perception that Italian or French is the better cuisine, too, but saying that restaurants who have a German based menu serve "Gute Hausmannskost" (a good home-made like meal), while the Italian and French restaurants are treated like the place you go for something "special" and once you leave Europe, it's considered "exotic".
Thus said, we are VERY defensive when it comes to our bread and bakery. Every German who ever left the country becomes keenly aware how superior our bakeries are. And in a way, that is what Germany is famous for. Every Foody knows that Germany is the place to go to splurge on bakery products and sausages.

All I could find in the USA was white toast----and nothing like the Schwarzbrot, Graubrot and whole grain stuff I was used to. I was devastated. But what I couldn't get enough of in the States was Steak with various salads and baked potatoe with sour cream. Delicious! It was in the States where I came to appreciate salad, and my steak medium rare,---you get a juicy, tender steak with a slight crust, --wonderful!

    • @blackforest_fairy
      @blackforest_fairy Před 5 lety +17

Huh? In my expirience most people here go to German restaurants for celebrating special events and to an Italien restaurant for a quick lunch (btw: I am working at a German restaurant and I worked at an Italien restaurant before... At the Italien one we never had any big celebrations but at the German one several times a week) I also disagree with the statement that french and italian cuisine is better then german cuisine and no one i know thinks that way either... I personally find most of french foods disgusting especially if it is with snails or with frogs or with sea food. And italian food is good ones in a while but nothing compared to Sauerbraten mit Klößen und Rotkohl, Rindsrouladen or Hirschgulasch etc. And also this things are not only bavarian...like almost every region in Germany has their own Sauerbraten recipe (rheinischer Sauerbraten, schwäbischer Sauerbraten i think there is also a sächsischer Sauerbraten...) same goes for Kartoffelsalat...
If you would give a task to 100 German couples to choose either an Italien, a French or a German menu for their wedding i would bet my ass on at least 85 of the 100 couples going for a German menu ( given that non of them is a vegitarian)... Not many Germans would treat their "Braten" for Spagetti and Pizza etc. And even less would treat it for snails and frogs... ( I know there is more french food then snails and frogs and I also know that there is more Italien food then Pasta and Pizza, but that is what the average German thanks about then it comes to Italien or French cuisine)

    I am from germany 🙂
There are lots of different types of 'Stollen'...most of them are with raisins, but there is also stollen without them in.
It would be hard to name just one popular german dish, as it differs in each region. I live in the swabian region near Stuttgart. Popular swabian dishes are 'Spätzle' (best described as soft homemade pasta) with lentils and 'Wiener'-sausages (frankfurters are similar to them), or 'Maultaschen' (could be described as a large ravioli pasta, filled with a meat and spinach filling), or 'Zwiebelrostbraten' (a steak with a topping of slowly-fried onions and gravy).
The 'German Bratwurst' is a must on on every german bbq in the summer.
Most of the german sweets are not healthy at all. You just got the 'healthier' ones 🙂

Good German foods are Bratkartoffeln which are fried potatoes with bacon and onion, Schweinshaxe which is pork knuckle, Riebekuchen, kind of like hash browns but you have sauces with them, apple or garlic for example. And traditionally at Christmas it's goose with red cabbage and potato dumplings. That's some of the best things I've eaten, but the food is very good, more hearty than say French or Italian, lots of potatoes, cabbage and pork but all really tasty.

The traditions and thus also the food in Germany vary from region to region and are often influenced by the neighbouring countries. For example, Flammkuchen, which is more reminiscent of a French pizza, in the Palatinate bordering Alsace. In Swabia you will find Maultaschen; in Bavaria various Knödel; in the north Eisbein and Currywurst. And so on and so forth. Apart from the traditional dishes we have Italian, Turkish, French, Greek, American influences as well as from Eastern Europe. And although most probably think of a lot of meat in German cuisine, there is also a substantial vegan scene here. Greetings!😘

And i looove the food my Oma used to make - stews with vegetables from her own garden, hühnerfrikassee which i can‘t really explain, stampfkartoffeln which is like a certain sort of mashed potatoes with massive chunks of bacon in it and especially überbackenes Schnitzel, schnitzel in a creamy sauce baked with cheese on top. And don‘t even get me started on the desserts- apfelstrudel, zwetschgenkuchen (plumcake), nussecken (nutcorners) or nougatringe 😻

From the breads to the treats. And the the warmth of the people. Thank you for your delightful channel, and also, allowing me to speak of Germany, a very special place in my heart. Hugs. S.

There is a small size bag that you can ge of them that is about the size of a trail mix bag that you would get at a gas station and, I can only eat half of that size bag with no milk because my mouth gets very dry. There is A LOT of black licorice here and if that's something you like, I want to send some. The restaurant scene in Germany isn't too exciting (coming from an American). A typical Christmas meal is Rouladen which is a flat steak with bacon and a pickle rolled up in the middle, boiled potatoes, and pickled red cabbage. Lots of fancy meals are some sort of meat with some kind of potato and vegetables. I also ate veal one Christmas. Very delicious food! Let me know about the black licorice. I'll be sure to send some chips as well.
