Regular Car Reviews: 2006 Mazda RX-8

- So many Mazdas of all shapes and sizes,
We did the Miata Which is why this franchise is.
The RX-8 was an improved RX-7,
which had been discontinued since 2011.
It came in all colors It came in all shades,
turd brown, magenta And gunmetal gray.
Naturally aspirated with side exhaust ports,
the engine was the 210 horsepower sort.
They said it was sleek.
They said it was classy.
But it was really just built
on an MX-5 chassis.
Its style was developed through design competitions,
in America and Europe,
in the Mazda tradition.
And also Japan,
let us not forget them.
Like America's forgotten about Robin Wright Penn.
The car was designed by Ikuo Maeda.
A man who loved cars,
and maybe paella.
The 50:50 front-rear
weight distribution
makes this the official car of Hitman: Absolution.
Your friends all will marvel,
while drinking their Coors,
when you open the freestyle suicide doors.
They provide easy access
to seats in the back.
Since drunkenly banging
takes all of one's tact.
A symbol of money culture made manifest:
That's how to describe the RX-8 best.
For this is what Mazda intended to purvey
to make you feel King of all you survey.
But this is a shadow?
A trick of the mind?
A king of the road?
Why, you are no such kind!
This car attracts bros.
This car attracts schmoozers.
This car attracts winners,
bambizzlers
and losers.
This car seats much lower than old Honda Fits.
But it feels like you're sagging like elderly tits.
Headlights don't go up,
nor do they go down.
They do not make noises.
They don't make a sound.
As a coupe it's not high,
nor is it too low,
but we cannot fit rollbars
for track day,
my bro. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Ah, the RX-8. The displacement of an inline-4, the power of a V6, the fuel consumption of big block V8.
lol
so true.... Neat, but never lived up to the RX7's stature. And was a failure.
Technically it's got the displacement of a V6 too (3.9L). It's just rated at 1.3L mostly for insurance purposes. Mazda only measures the displacement 1 of the 3 chambers per rotor.
And the rev range of a V12
Wouldn't call it a failure, I see them a lot in SoCal.
the dipstick used to probably be longer, but the owner just installed a short throw dipstick
😂
I'm surprised he hasn't made this car dirt nasty low
+MoonMan no its that short. I know from experience.
Ian McDermitt
Haha I know man its a joke... Its from the dude who has all the videos making fun of certain types of car owners.. theres no such thing as a short throw dipstick.. its like a muffler bearing
the short throw dipstick is the first mod I do on my cars
You forgot to mention that this had a rotary
Itorho10 Sorry for asking but are you 12? Because then in 4 yrs you'd be 16 and be able to drive. Personally I don't think this would be good becaue after about 80K miles, the tips of the rotors in the engine don't seal properly because of wear and getting in there and replace the seals can be expensive.
Itorho10 Sorry for wrongly assuming but yeah it wouldn't be that good of a first car because of the stuff I said and because these cars don't get good gas mileage.
Itorho10 Any Honda, Toyota, Subaru should be good. They're reliable, get good gas mileage, have bulletproof engines (in most cases), and in my opinion look alright
+RandomVideos Thank you for responding so quickly and I'll be researching them aswell
Itorho10 No problem man and I forgot to mention that pretty much any japanese car that doesn't have a rotary should be fine
you could spend 40 minutes reviewing a blank sheet of paper and I'd watch every second of it.
nj4ck As an English major he would either pontificate on the possibilities and differences between wide rule and college rule lined paper, or he would have a 40 minute anxiety attack on how he doesnt know what to write and the blank paper is mocking him.
snappy452 Ok, now I *really* want to see that review.
nj4ck RegularCars please
United States of Embarrassment Agreed, his madness is apriciated as well as underated.
Are you referring to Matt Farah’s Million Mile Lexus?
The good thing about this review is if it discourages enough buyers, it will keep the prices down to my level until I can grab one.
Otto Man I just bought my 2007 a few months ago for about $9k with 34k original miles. LOVE the car. Check out my videos.
Otto Man Hey man did you buy your RX8?
Oh rx8's are real cheap to buy . So cheap that it will make you nervous of why exactly is it so cheap.
Tim Davidson I'm in that boat right now, first car, looking for a nice one, being so cheap only begs the question "why"
Arcaynex Don't buy one unless you're ready to pour a quart of oil into the engine every month religiously and drive it like a maniac on a fairly regular basis in order to use the high RPM's to clean out the carbon from the inside of the engine to prevent carbon lock. And be ready to swap out the four distributor caps, spark plugs, and wires as soon as you get it, as those have a penchant for going out early and unlike a piston engine, a rotary engine misfiring results in fairly quick self-destruction. If you can handle keeping an eye on the maintenance though, then it's a great car. I love mine, and get a lot of compliments and questions about it.
That poem is soooooo deep.
Just like that dipstick. Hahaha

"the clutch uses brake fluid" uhh, it may just be a coincidence but every standard car I know uses brake fluid in the clutch master cylinder
Its not a coincidence; brake fluid for the clutch has been par for the course since 1932.
Josh Fox I think what he means is that the reservoirs are shared
So if your clutch line breaks or a slave cylinder starts to leak you lose your clutch AND your breaks?
It's normally setup so that the clutch will fail from lack of fluid before the brakes (because the cylinder is higher).
Josh Fox not to mention but the reviewer apparently cannot spell either it's (stroke) not stoke what a douche right?
Wait a minute, so you are telling me that it comes from the factory with a short throw dipstick?
govenmentassassin jdm af
Pablo sanchez approves
The shorter dipstick is weight savings. That's how they were able to make a car with an engine lighter than the MX-5's engine, and end up with a car only 1,100 pounds heavier.
No it comes with longer owner got short one for some reason?
And its dirt nasty low too.
*Felix Wankel was an unappreciated GENIUS!!!1!*
Felix Wankel hated this pos engine with a passion.
.
@@sandervanderkammen9230 because it wasn't his overcomplicated POS that had to be completely disassembled to access the spark plugs
@@dodecahedron1 Correct it was Hanns Paschke and Walter Freode who were responsible for the POS KKM57 engine... the biggest financial failure in the history of the engine manufacturing industry.
That note is actually an E, not a C#.
Sorry.
+AlmightyDeku I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that. But the note on his keyboard looked like C#. Maybe it transposed?
+blayke p It would be a C# on an alto saxophone. Not sure why anyone would play a keyboard transposed from C to Eb though.
Don't mind us, two music nerds having a chat about theory.
+AlmightyDeku Yup. Which makes it perfectly tuned for Bro music of an earlier age. And that's a good thing.

yeah, BUT! you get to say _wankle_. AND THATS COOL.
I must restrain myself to not accidentally call it a 'wanker' engine...
@ROCKETRACER580 Its called junk.
Fixed it for ya.
Even though I've seen the majority of these older videos, it's still nostalgic to come back amd watch. Thanks for the memories Mr Regular
As a 14 year owner, mostly correct. 2 things: The barkbuster is there to allow the handbrake to stick up further without looking as funny. As low as those seats are it's common for passengers' knees to lean over near the gear shift and get in the way. 2. The sun visors have holes but in thick plastic so a slight angle blocks all light. It's great for when the sun is below traffic lights so you can use the bottom rim to block the sun while still seeing the traffic lights above it.
MORE TRIANGLES
I love you.
so much missinformation in this video.
"repairing a wankel is not as simple as changing piston rings"
yes, it is exactly that simple, and probably even simpler, because of how simple it is to dissasemble and reassemble a rotary engine. oh, and it doesnt blow up
"the oil dipstick is right next to the exhaust"
no it is at EXACTLY the opposite side of the exhaust
"if you shut it when its cold, it will flood"
yes, it could happen in the early days of the rx8, but after a fast update of the cpu by the dealer, it is not an issue anymore
"it is an improved RX7"
no it is not, it is a totally different car in terms of setup and behaviour. rx7 was much closer to the term of a "supercar", while the rx8 is a comfortable sports car.

This is the comment I would've posted if I wasn't so lazy. Thank you.
RegularCars take a field trip to a rotary engine company. Moller has the Curtiss-Wright patent I think.

0:12 This is the happiest damn car I ever did see. I wanna hug it.
Love the old spinning Dorito motor
You can use less than 91 octane in an RX-8, the engine's ecu just changes the tune for the lower octane, like how a Civic Si of the same era would, it says so in the owner's manual and in the product update. I wish this review would have focused more on how great the driving experience of this car is, how it tachs up so high and is built to take that, and the great weight distribution with the FM-R layout. And how it's more practical than most of the cars it goes up against (Mustang GT, 350Z, S2000) or any kind of upside at all would've been nice. Yes, it gets bad gas mileage, yes, it burns oil, that's it. Mazda extended warranties to cover the damage done with engine replacements and mailed out 'product updates' that explain the maintenance that comes with owning an RX-8/rotary car. I know someone who's daily driven an RX-8 since turning 16 and she's had no issues. It's a car that requires attention and care, and any car enthusiast that's actually a car enthusiast will stay on top of maintenance and care.
Thank God for you.
Low octane fuel isn't good for many engines, I don't know about the RX-8 engine, but the Golf 4 16v engines for an example NEED 98 octane fuel to run properly, 95 octane and the engine won't run smoothly, 91 octane and a few kilometers... engine damage.
Also, low octane fuel usually has lower quality, while high octane fuel is filtered, which is good for the injection system.
xXYannuschXx The owners manual and a product update both state that 91+ octane is recommended, but an RX-8 can run on an octane as low as 87. The ECU will tune the engine down slightly to avoid misfire and other issues with lower octane. Obviously premium is preferred, but it can and will run on at least 87.
Ray Christensen
Wow, 95 octane fuel is the worst fuel you can easily get in Germany, 92 octane is almost impossible xD
We use lower octane ratings here than the average European gas station, which is part of the reason why the States has such cheaper gas.

Sounds like a cross between porn and a Dr. Sues novel.
+RegularCars I'm not sure if these types of commercials were around this video was made, but it sounds an awful lot like the new mx-5 commercials with narration like a Dr. Sues poem
I own a 2010 RX-8, which is a series 2. The one reviewed here is a Series 1. They did fix the dipstick in the Series 2, it now sits pretty close to the engine cover so it's no problem at all to get to.
The prescribed guideline is to check oil every two fill-ups, but in mine depending on how you use it you can push it to three or four (note: don't just go straight to four until you know how much oil you're burning).
The S2 has different gearing for more off-the-line performance. There are anecdotes that the Renesis had some design tweaks to improve reliability in S2 as well.
Overall I think the Series 2 is a superior car both in performance and reliability, but unfortunately almost everyone who ever was gonna get one already had Series 1, so most of the S1 stigmas stick.
I love that partway through you switched to Limerick form. 10/10.
Still my favorite intro to any Regular review.
The RX-8 I owned for a while was a very nice machine! It's just a pity it was never offered with Mazdas 2.3 Turbo 4. I love rotaries, but just having the option would have saved the RX-8

Don't all clutches use brake fluid?
lolh4x
Only hydraulic clutches do if Im not mistaken
lolh4x no, most use clutch fluid....
rubberwoody And clutch fluid is hydraulic fluid, which is brake fluid... For example, Ford's manual for the 2013 Mustang says to use DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid.
+rubberwoody And the muffler uses exhaust fluid, and the engine uses engine fluid......
All c5 corvettes do
The RX-8 has won 37 international motoring awards including 2003 International Engine of the Year, the 2003 Japanese Car of the Year, Australia's Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 2003, the 2004 Singapore Car of the Year, the 2004 U.S. Best Sports Car, and several UK Best Car Awards. It was named on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 2004, 2005, and 2006. It also took home 1st place on Car and Driver's "Four of a Kind" comparison test. 2010 RX-8 placed 3rd out of 7 on Car and Driver's The Best-Handling Car in America for Less Than $100,000. It was also awarded the Editors' Choice Award by Grassroots Motorsports in 2003. yeah seems like a terribly bad car that everyone thinks is shit.
+Ruri Gokou the problem is all the fat and lazy americans would rather sit on there butts instead of doing the little bit of maintenance the rotary requires, I love my RX8, her name is Scarlet.
+Ruri Gokou
It has a decent handling but other than that, it's just a piece of crap that only weaboocucks drools over. It's slow, it's got no torque, and it drinks oil like mad.

The rx8 amd the rx7 aren't the same thing they aren't comparable. One is a pure sports car and the other one is a sporty gt car. They have the same sort of engine but again they aren't comparable.
If you want a sports car you buy the rx7 and if you want an everyday gt car you buy the rx8

that really is one of the best poems ive ever heard.
From what i learned about reading about rx8 (i planned to buy one) the rotor seals are actually really easy to replace ... they are not all that expensive either and if you operate the car correctly you can enjoy all that 200hp 1.3l goodness for a long time before that becomes a problem and than again who worries about something you have to do every 80k miles ? its not like piston engines are the most reliable thing around and the insurance part is a very big deal in countries like ireland where insurance companies have been raising the insurance costs around 20-30% each 1-2 years because of some stupid ass reasons they took out of their ass my parents for their 180hp volvo now pay 1200euro per year for third party fire and theft (not full insurance) while last year both of them paid 500euro .... its a joke and some companies even classify the rx8 and rx7 as 2.6 liters because they say its a different style of engine so their capacity should be calculated differently which again makes insuring a rotary engine expensive in most cases in europe .... welcome to the land of high insurance and the free healthcare with 1-5year waiting list aka europe
Apex seals are NOT easy to replace at all. Yes, rotary engines are simple with very few moving parts but you have to remove and disassemble the rotor housing of the rotor on question, clean all components, replace components and reassemble the entire thing within the engine bay for even a basic repair. This entire process could take several hours even to an experienced technician.
Source: Apprentice mechanic with Mazda, we have maybe one RX-8 a fortnight come in on a towtruck for repairs.
+Luke Novakovic I agree that replacing the apex seals in a rotary isn't easy, but I would say that it is comparatively easy when compared to, for example, replacing piston rings.
By the way sorry for commenting on something that is over 1 month old.
One of the best vids I have seen
I'm really liking that SHORT THROW DIPSTICK dude!
Bro the poem is still killing me to this day 😂
you can avoid flooding it when cold by accelerating to 4000RPM and then turn it off. But still, always better to wait for it to be hot.
Yes, I own one XD
There is a hungarian Wankel (+RX8) guru, and he said, that this is not a good solution, so PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!
If You would like to turn off when the engine is cold, You should put a switch, which can shut down the petrolpump - and within a few seconds, when the RPM rises - 'cause of the lack of the fuel (and excess of air), You can turn the engine off. Then switch back on the petrolpump, and you can start the engine with no problem. With this method You can avoid piling up unburnt fuel (fuel flooding).
wody21 I rev my rx8 to 3k for 3 seconds and release when I turn mine off. Hasn't flooded yet.
Yeah, that's cool! In addition the best way probably is to try to avoid shutting off the car when the engine is cold :)
yeah but sometimes you can't :D I sometime had to change parking spot because you can't be at the same parking spot more than 1 1/2 hours in "blue zone" where I live, and then get back to work. So I just didn't have the time to let it warm up.

That poem at the end was very well written
The narration on these videos always crack me up tis the reason I watch them
I'm not sure if you noticed but your keyboard played an E note when you hit C#
Turns out this isn't built on an MX5 chassis. The entire car is bespoke.
It also has way more than 210 hp.
Shame to see what this guy has done to his.
The entire car is not bespoke. There is a reason why NC MX-5 suspension arms and coilovers bolt right into an RX-8 without issue. They are the same basic platform.
Think it was over rated hp, real hp was much lower than Mazda listed
The automatic rx8 has 210 horsepower the stick shift has closer to 240
That is correct, the manual had much more hp than the auto. The way it mated with the rotary engine made a big difference, apparently. And supposedly, those rotary engines got "seasoned" with mileage and gained hp. Problem is, very few lasted that long without blowing up. Mine blew at 32K. They were so bad that Mazda extended the power train warranty, just for RX-8 owners to 60K, and I believe even higher later after I got rid of mine. Mazda knew they were full of issues. They claimed it was the first generation RENESIS engine (which my '05 had), and gave you a free gen II if yours blew up (which I received), but I didn't stick it out with the second one because I didn't trust it. I later heard the gen II wasn't much better. Such a shame because the concept of a rotary engine is great and the car was fun as hell when it worked.
Glad to know you guys ride too. 😂.

I was searching for a 1.3 suzuki swift too, great car.
The holes in the sunvisor are so that you can see the color of traffic lights and still block out sun. It's actually pretty clever.
I love the Rx8 but good shit on the video it was hilarious! Hahaha you're a natural poet!
Rotary engines are actually pretty good. They have impressive performance for such tiny displacements. I hope I do not sound like a fan boy here, but they are generally good engines. They can run different fuels too.
That "tiny" displacement is a misnomer. If you count ignition events instead of single swept volume you get about 3.6 liters. That helps explain the mileage.
Kind of like 2 strokes used to be raced against 4 strokes at "half" displacement ie 125cc vs 250cc. If you count ignition events it's a different story. People ignore that for some reason.
You do realize the 1.3l thing is all marketing BS, right?
They measure ONE combustion chamber. That would be like measuring one cylinder on a v8 and calling it a 0.7 liter.
Rotaries are more like 3.5-4.0L
Jeremey Allen You do realise that 1, displacement doesnt work the same with different engine types, its a rough refference for engine size and 2. if you measure by the air displaced on a single rotation of the "crank", the RX8's engine displaces 1.3 Liters of air. Same thing happens with say a 1.3 liter piston engine, One full rotation of the crank and the engine will displace 1.3 liters worth of air.
Simple mathematics and physics. Now going by the actual total air inside of the chambers at all times is actually 2.6 liters. Thats where the whole, its not a 1.3 liter, its a 2.6 liter thing comes in. This is where the true argument comes in. Do you measure an engines size based off its air displacement or its total chamber volume.
Then we have you guys who thing that because it has 3 sides to the rotor and that rotor takes three rotations of the crank to make a full rotation. So therefor it must be atleast a 3.9 liter and so its a 3.9 liter that produces very little HP and torque and so it must be a shit engine.
Ignoring the argument between 1.3 and 2.6, the rotary engine is a small engine. Its smaller than a 2.6L piston engine, But its larger than a 1.3L. Its more around the size of a 1.6L. Which isnt a large difference. And for the performance of the engine, Being the size of a 1.6L with physical displacement of a 2.6L comes with perks like being very light for its size, Being very efficient at constant RPM (As seen in Mazda's range extender motors) and reeving very freely. If you really want to argue, Take a look at the RX500, a 500cc rotary with 200HP. Rev limit at 15k.
Then we can go on to talk about the 1.6L rotary that Mazda has been working on for years. While retaining the same size and being lighter than the 1.3, the new engine is to be a 1.6L on paper. Displacement you can say its a 3.2 but in reality it moves the same amount of air as a 1.6L piston engine, At the same size of a piston engine, while being lighter than said piston engine.
Oh and this "They measure ONE combustion chamber. That would be like measuring one cylinder on a v8 and calling it a 0.7 liter." Complete bullshit. They measured both combustion chambers. One on each rotor, Ignoring the intake chambers which is where the true argument comes in. Do you include the intake chambers.
The real facts are, the RX8 engine is of a similar size as the 1.6L engine in a Honda Jazz (Fit) sport that produces 250HP (Type s engine). The problem with fuel economy is partly due to the lack of support in the development of the engine and partly due tot he nature of the engine lacking the ability to produce clean burns. A lot of fuel with the addition of oil makes burns inefficient and so more fuel and high reving is required to get good performance.
3.6l
Its been gone over many times.

Ever since this video came out, my friends text tone has been “triangles triangles triangles so much triangles, Vroom more triangles”. I love going back to this and having a huge laugh.
Every few days I'll think about buying one of these and then I'll come watch this video and change my mind.
RX-8 improved RX-7, I think not!
You should review an FD rx7 if you can find one, they're so rare around here.
no he should not an FD is enthusiasts car not a regular shitbox
Scott D He reviewed a Lotus so why not?
I sold mine in February earlier this year, had it for 2 years. Looked just like this one in the video gun metal grey with the ground effect kit, except my wheels were painted black, and minus the turd brown interior. My favorite car I've owned so far and would've kept it if it was even remotely reasonable on fuel consumption. Same original engine in it at 120k miles and running perfect.
The holes in the visor block the brightness and glare of the sun while allowing you to see intersection lights. Believe it or not they are really useful
Funny, but id still buy one, i smell unappreciation of a cool car
Why buy a very ugly car with absolutely no torque and very unreliable car?
sargeslapnuts Because it's a damn good drive. Torque isn't the only way to go fast, it's just the best method of leaving a stoplight and/or converting rubber into smoke. The RX-8 is poised, balanced, sharp in the bends and that torqueless rotary screams to some serious rpm's so coming out of a corner in low gears it can really gather its skirts.
And for that matter, it really isn't ugly, nor is it really that unreliable. On the beauty front, it's not a bad looking car, it just shares the 350Z's fate of being basic looking. It's just sort of the average sports coupe shape. If anything it's magnified by the fact that, at least in my opinion, all three generations of RX-7 especially the FD were all better looking cars.
As for the reliability, they did warranty that engine for ten years and 100K if I'm not mistaken. And really, they do seem to be more reliable than the 7's that came before; RX-8's are getting up in the years now and you still see them. A clean FD on the street? That is sadly a rarity.
It's not for everyone, it's not really a good car to buy used, and it will always be in the shadow of the almighty FD RX-7 that came before it and showed the world the rotary sports car at its peak. But the RX-8 is not a bad car, it is a good driver's car, it is fairly practical with its quasi-four door layout, and it is probably the most reliable production rotary to see production.
For my money, I'd rather have an S2000 for a driver's car or a WRX/STi if I needed four doors, but to write the RX-8 off as ugly, torqueless, and blanket unreliable is just not doing it justice.
Nah its all a joke, dont take it seriously. He does not say anything about the car being bad, the thing regarding the engine rebuilds at 80000 us noraml for these engines. he is just making jokes about its features, things I would not have even thought about lol
sargeslapnuts It looks waay better than those stupid bulky, boxy-looking new-model Camaros, Mustangs, and Chargers. And for torque, it just needs a tune. And the 06+ models are perfectly reliable if you take care of them the way you're *supposed* to take care of a rotary engine, most people just can't wrap their brains around that.
Bob Saget (Giggle), this is a channel that loves to poke fun about great cars. They never said there was anything bad about it.
It's hilarious how many people have taken this seriously. Fanboys with no sense of humour about their cars can do one, really. I thought your poem in this video was particularly good.
In 2016, I was going around for Tag Day (Manchester High School Music Boosters fundraiser) and we had to run back to a friends house and his neighbor's RX-8 had a Big Mac smeared all over the rear window! XD
My buddy had one of these when we both worked at a restaurant. He had a constant fear that his RX-8 would blow up.
made my head back up when he said "More Triangles!" 😂
Haha you have to band together and fist bump... [whisper] - and touch butts...
SoSmall! SoMuchPower! SoSmall! SoMuchPower!! bahahaha
Still I love my RX8 despite its many eccentricities, and since my previous car, a 1998 Ford Contour SVT E-Zero required 91+ octane and got relatively crappy gas mileage as well, it's not much of a change for me anyways. Just the additions of more horsepower and rear-wheel drive.
Subbed!
Oh boy, my car. Getting a new engine at 90k miles. This review is 100% accurate.
"We cannot fit roll bars for track day, my bro" hahaha
