Yeah... but it's gonna be the car that the last generation will be able to afford, so they can have fun slow car at an age later than most would consider appropriate. In some ways, it's the quarter life crisis car. Act like a teen while making your very first salary, because you were a practical kid and got a useful degree, eschewing fun for your future. And now you can finally afford to have the fun you put off.
@@Lieutenant_Dude It's kind of in the spot the Corvette used to occupy; the car you got when you finally paid down your debts and could afford something nice. Funny story is that although the Corvette hasn't increased meaningfully in price since the 00s, the everymans ability to afford one has declined, so your option is something like the 86 which is a fine car but you feel cheated because you know it's really for 20-somethings but you can barely justify the money it costs when you're 40.
@@UnderTheIceburg just buy one bro, they're one of the cheapest options out there, and you only live once. I see more youngish people in Porsche SUV's, Tesla's, BMW's etc that cost much more, than I do in BRZ's/86's. The BRZ/86 is the car for the every-man car enthusiast. That alone makes it something special.
It's a car priced for the masses, yet only appeals to the niche enthusiasts. Kind of funny when you think about it actually. But of all the fun / 'sport' / enthusiast cars out there, this is one of the ones you should feel the least guilty about buying.
@@Jez4prez1 They look nice but they're slow for how expensive they are. a v6 camry is faster and costs about the same in addition to being way more practical.
@@UnderTheIceburg I own a V6 camry, although it's an older model, and it's probably the slowest car I've ever driven. A BRZ/GR86 is faster on basically any road with turns. They're actually insanely fast on tight roads and tight circuits, competing way above their price bracket. That is what they're made for, not for driving in a straight line. No harm in having two cars (or more) anyway hehe.
They're not expensive either, the price of the 'average new car' is tens of thousands higher. They're on the cheap end of the car market. If you don't want to spend that then almost all cars would be out of the ballpark. Anyhow, they're genuinely excellent cars for their price point. Camry's are great also but completely different. That's why I own both lol. The Camry is my boring practical car for daily driving where I don't care what happens to it. My BRZ is for back-road driving and special weekend trips, and is more like a hobby car.
If you want a Camry, look into importing a Toyota Crown instead. It's basically an upgraded luxury version Camry. I'll probably replace / upgrade my Camry with a Crown sooner or later.
Toyota tech here: You can turn off the ASC by going into the head unit menu. Home > Settings/ Gear > General/ Car > ASC (Active Sound Control) > Off
Unplugging the speaker is kind of a silly way to do it. But hey, nobody reads the manual.
That's interesting. According to the manual, that setting can only be changed by the dealer for some reason.

There is nothing like unplugging a physical connection. That way you have no worries of it ever coming back on.

man, call me a nostalgia hog, but looking at this feels like when i first saw mark IV supras in college. ambrosia for the tuner crowd which i was never into, but their rarity will earn them a whispered rep that will pass into legend as they and their audience age out. i would love a car like this (with jay's mods) if i was still in my 20s.
Should get an 86. Cars like these are for anyone who appreciates them. Keiichi Tsuchiya is in his mid 60s and drives a modern 86 on the street. The GR86 looks great, but I want to pick up an older used model, since they're all very similar. 200HP on one of these is still enough to kick the back out if you know how to drive the car.
@@low_re8094 not practical. i had a hyundai genesis coupe for a while. 274hp turbo, fun as hell, but you couldn't even fit a cooler in the trunk. also you're not getting a gr86 for less than $40k, even used unless it's beat to hell.

Thank you for bringing up digital throttle bodies, I've hated every one. New cars have so much delay and if you press the brake pedal at same time as throttle they always turn throttle off.. dangerous. Just because my Aunt drove her car through the garage wall while mistakingly pressing both pedals they remove all connection from our feet

driving my underpowered shitbox you have to hold gears to get anywhere, then when you do upshift those 3 cylinders just punch you in the clutch unless you wait literal seconds for the revs to drop
These don't kill the throttle when you press the brake, which is nice.
1st thing I changed about my Fiesta ST, power max throttle controller. Made the car so much more responsive and fun to drive.
I drive fleet vehicles as my company car. Usually a small sedan in past years. Those cars with sloppy throttle by wire systems do feel dangerous when pulling out into busy intersections making a right turn into traffic.
Funny how Subaru did the opposite of this to try and make the 2015+ WRX “feel” faster. 20% throttle is actually like 80% throttle. Makes it an extremely hard car to teach someone to drive manual with.
That.... makes no sense, the brake pedal is still physically, if it disconnected the throttle she wouldn't have gone anywhere.....

This is not a car to compare with the AE86. This is a car to compare with its contemporary rivals. It is the AE86 of its time, I believe.

That's a good take on it. I disliked the first generation of this car (under whatever name), but they got this generation pretty close to right. The styling works, the power is about right, and the interior is improved. I wouldn't buy one because we can only have one car, but I respect it.
Exactly. One of the things that annoys me about Mr. R is the fact that he can't seem to let go of how cars were in the 80s and 90s. CARS WILL NEVER BE LIKE THAT AGAIN and it's time to move on. This is the 86 of TODAY and we're never, ever going back. However, that doesn't make it a bad car. I actually think it's a much improved upon version of a 90s sports car. It does all the same things, but in a more precise and technical fashion, and doesn't feel like a complete death trap at anything over 55mph. As much as Mr. R rags on boomers, he should take a look in the mirror, because he's just as "set in his ways" as they are.

*This* is the philosophy that I wish more car brands would adopt. I've never been big on the 86, but I'll gladly back up something that was done in respect of what was. Not following the trends, not reinventing the wheel, just taking what was good and making it better, shining new light on the legacy.

The start of this with the smooth transition tricked me into thinking it was going to be one of the more serious reviews, but then I got RCRd real quick.

EDIT: You're right about that naming convention thing, banking on something from the past to try and sell something now is much more likely to get you despised by two separate generations of people than it is to getting people into a dealership. Very few cars in recent history managed to pull that off while staying true to their origins. The RX series Mazdas, the MX-5, the S2000 being a successor to the old S600/S800s, the GT-R, FCAs Challengers and Chargers and, by the look of things, Nissan's new Z or the new Suzuki Jimny (I know it's out of left field, but we're talking about being a genuine descendant of something here).
Otherwise, it generally ends up failing. Nissan's previous Z, the Mustang Mach name being used on an electric SUV, Honda's attempt at reviving the NSX, VWs attempt at using the Beetle's name and shape, Ford trying out that Thunderbird design in the 2000s or, since I praised them earlier, FCA using the Direct Connection moniker to promote their future EV lineup, after generations of gear-heads grew up with as being their cool speed parts catalogue.
I would have called the Modern Iterations of the 86 'Celica'. It looks, and has a lot in common with the original RWD Toyota Celica that had that 'Mini Muscle Car' look.
In looks, yes, but the performance of the Celica was always modest. I would have liked to see the Celica name revived, but I think their sporting ambitions were a little too serious for that name.

The Scion tC was more of a “Celica” than anything else. It’s pretty much a successor to that car and it feels like the last gen Celica in that regard as to how it runs and drives. The 86 is more of the AE86 Corolla just done for a new generation of car people.

I think the legend of the AE86 has surpassed the actual character of the car. I daily drove mine during college and after driving the gen 1 86 it felt similar. They're good, but both leave you wanting; and that's what made them great! Aspirations.

Cool that you reviewed one. I just ordered my 2023 BRZ last week. You have to see this thing really more like a blank canvas than a finished product. It's a great car to drive as is, but the potential for more is massive. For about $30k, it's an amazing starting point and you can build something truly incredible for a few dollars more. I went with the BRZ instead of the GR86 because all the Toyota places were marking up $5k over MSRP and the Subaru dealership was just doing straight up MSRP. That markup kind of defeats the purpose of the car IMHO.
How's the subie dealership experience vs Toyota?
@@DB-sd3cw The Subaru dealership was much nicer. But I don't know that it's a fair comparison. My sales rep at the Subaru shop was in his late 50s and had been working there for about 25 years. He knew the answer to every question I had without looking anything up and was overall pretty chill. My rep at Toyota was a very young lady in her mid 20s. She was obviously new at the job and wasn't comfortable in it yet. She didn't know anything about cars really. I'm sure she'll get there, but she was super green. But she did tell me that they were marking everything up at least 5k over MSRP and there would be no negotiating that. So I'm getting a BRZ now instead.
Yeah, there’s a CPO one (it has like 400 miles on it) at a dealership near me for, uhhhhhh $46k. Pass!
@@DB-sd3cw i was one of the first owners in december to pick up a 2022 brz, and i can second the dealership experience. i'd only gotten lucky with my local subaru dealer but i've heard oodles of people on the forums complain about how gr86s are being distributed- it's either marked up, sold, or just auto.
This. These cars and the FR-S and BRZ before them feel like the modern equivalent of a Silvia. Sporty and revvy from the factory, but a great canvas for upgrades

Lol, great review. People tend to forget that we are lucky to still have "cheap" sports car in this world of small SUV's and HEV/EV's. Some brand don't even sells cars anymore. For sure it won't feel like an old 80's RWD Corolla's. As much as I like AE86, they are currently outdated and overpriced IMO. The FR-S/BRZ/86 is still alive after 10 years, this is something to celebrate. Plus, lot of the parts are mostly unchanged. Each year they make it will be an other year of parts for 2013 FR-S/BRZ !
The GT86/FRS/BRZ will be the next 240sx in 10-15 years, and I’m ok with that 👌

To be fair, the 228 hp is underrated. These cars are putting down 215-225 whp stock on a dyno, so the actual hp is around 250hp.
Ordered a GR86 in January, it arrived on May 1st. Some thoughts after 2 months - I've never been more excited to take a trip to the grocery store, or really any excuse to drive. Coming from a Mk7 GTI, I was worried about it's smaller trunk, the back seats, lack of turbo and the harsher ride for long trips. After 2 months I have come to accept that it cannot be what the GTI was - because it is better in almost every way. Sure, there are some quirks, like the fake engine noise, the weird turn signal design and the most annoying seat belt warning noise I've ever experienced. Luckily, the fake sound is easy to unplug, the turn signal thing becomes second nature after 3 weeks and I am now in the habit of ALWAYS putting my seat belt on right away. There is one other thing I will mention that is something I never experienced with the VW GTI - I get people gawking, talking and taking pictures of this car on an almost daily basis. Some people say, "Is that the new Supra?" and others just say, "What is that thing?" So far I've only had one, "What kind of Porsche it that?"

This car has the brand sharing of an early 90s Mitsubishi-Chrysler car, like a dodge stealth or something.

Major Mitsu Eclipse, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser vibes. Even has a brand that disappeared, a brand that quit making it, and a brand that took away the original spirit.
Though I don't really mind it that there's a slightly-different Subaru version, not sure which I'd like better, but apparently in Japanese versions the throttle tune's different, (They werent' complaining about lag in the GR86 there so that may be different over there) and it had me wonder if they made the GR more track-flavored and the Subie more rally-flavored in those subtle ways, ....they described the Subie as a bit more comfy by setup, but the comparison was... track day.
The badge engineering once upon a time had a lot to do with both the import rules and all the different-brand dealerships out there, but we always did think 'Stealth' in big letters was kind of a silly trying-too-hard name. :)

I just about entered an order quote on the Toyota website after watching this knowing full well a gr corolla would be a smarter buy for the winter...other than the throttle body and fake sounds it seems so pure and fun. I need to test one at least.

I want a GR Corolla too brotha but we wont be able to test one truely. at least anytime soon. theyre limited to about 3 per dealer and will be sold at heavy markup, presold to people on a waiting list. Makes it hard to really want one because of that... Dealers ruining it for me

If you want a sports car and can only have one car, the GR86 is probably the best new car pick right now. It's definitely more usable day-to-day than any generation Miata. The Corolla may be faster, but trust me when I say that RWD is worth the penalty in absolute power. These cars are genuinely great to drive and easy to live with.
@@5.0cs_Brandon Toyota doesn't want people to actually buy the GR Corolla. If they did, they'd make enough so that everything you mentioned wasn't a problem.

The FA24 in the GR86 is the non turbo variant, it actually makes 228 horsepower, not 271. The only real reason they added the FA24 over the old 2.0L was to give it a substantial increase in torque while still keeping it naturally aspirated. So instead of 150 ft-lbs at the top of the rev range you get 180 ft-lbs in the middle of it. Subsequently flattening out its torque dip. So maybe only 20 extra horsepower over the previous model, but 30 extra lb-ft of torque.
Here I thought this was the next giveaway car. I'd have bought a $50 mug for this.

I had the exact same throttle experience on a third gen Acura TL I drove to the Kansas City Auto Auction a few years back. A sharp contrast to my 92 Integra which instantly gets up and goes and never hesitates to go all the way to redline. Its like the Nanny State has finally found a way to invade the automotive driving experience of the youth.

Great idea but it's worth noting the NA MX-5 has a 33 year head start with plenty of beat to shit models you could pick up in the meantime.

Once the economy settles back down you may be able to get a lightly dammaged salvage title one for cheap I bought and rebuilt my FR-S for around 9-10k covid dollars including all the fees and all new fluids, tires and pads.
Once you graduate and get your first full adult job, get one. I wish I had done that when I was that age (instead of chasing around various shitboxes)
I just picked mine up about two weeks ago. The best way I can describe it is by saying this: I go over bumps on purpose in this car because the suspension has such a satisfying feel to it.

The HPV for the Focus ST was the Octane Academy. Similar situation: buy the car, get a free track day. Problem was it was waaaaaay out in Utah. I could barely afford the ST, let alone take a week off to go to Utah and back.
They did it for the Fiesta as well. A coworker at an old job got to do it twice, first with his Focus and later with a Fiesta. Thankfully it's not much of a drive from here.
I've got a couple friends that did it with their Fiestas. One guy more than once but I never got to go. A shame really.

Roughly 2 minutes in, and there was already some " What the f**k did I just watch?" moment. Granted, it's been a while since I've watched one of your videos ( The 1994 Dodge Caravan video being a favorite when it comes to weirdness ) , but it seems like some of the 'old stuff' is creeping in again.
Then again, every channel evolves, and I'm glad you're still enjoying yourself after all these years.

Still have my 2013 FRS I bought in 2012. No desire to replace it yet but will probably end up with one of these or the BRZ at some point. Waiting for a couple years for them to tweak/work out the kinks as I was victim of the valve spring issue on the original. Engine has been out twice for that and a third time for a seal leak. I still think this is the best driving car for the money. I would absolutely buy one of these over an S2000 or any gen MX5. It just is.

It’s interesting to hear your commentary on the heritage of the name because as someone who came of age in the 90s I can understand your comparison. To me, someone who came of age in the 2010s this car is one of the greatest sequels on the market for my 86, the FRS. when i think of an 86 i think of an FRS, not an AE86, so it was very interesting to hear your different point of view.

I’ve got a friend with a new 86… and a friend with an prior gen 86… and good lord they improved this car on every single aspect. If I had room for 2 cars, I’d have my tuned Alltrack (6MT) and an 86 (also manual). Since the Alltrack drives like a very small crossover, the 86 will such a breath of fresh air 🥰
Also stock throttle tuning on modern cars is HORRIBLE and a tune is necessary for basically every single car made today… I get it, gas mileage but damn LET ME LIVE 🗣

I've watched over 50 videos on this car. Including a couple where the reviewer's actually bought the car. This is the first, and only, to actual figure out how to kill the fake engine noise - and show how to do it. Bravo my good sir, bravo....

It's one of the very few new cars I'd actually want, certainly. And I'd always expected to want to do *something* about the e-throttle, and most e-throttles, probably. Handy little box would certainly be OK. As name and heritage go, these Scubayotion models in general always kinda reminded me of those forgotten plainer looking Celica GTs of like 1980, little coupes that didn't stand out much, but they were fun basics, a little nicer than Corollas, hardly barn-burners performancewise but fun to get the most out of, actually had a little charm to them despite really not looking very different from much of the rest on the road, faster than most Corollas out there by a bit, unless someone got the newer GTS that actually was more a proper hachi-roku, ...
Generally a creature of an age where a commuter/daily coupe or hatch you could have fun with was pretty mass-market, real non-drivers might just go for the slushbox or learn to drive stick for the better gas mileage and stuff, but that rear drive, often manual platform was all over the place. The Corollas and Celicas were out there, as were the upgrades for if someone found themselves wanting a bit more or better or posher or whatever direction they wanted to go. We're spoilt with 3 figure power numbers to compensate for weight and emissions gear. What happened to the days of 90hp in an 800kg rollerskate? No assists, just a tin box with an engine and some pedals. 3 to be specific. It's a good car don't get me wrong but it's no mx5 and it's definitely not a "pure drivers car"
Call me a grinch, but I would love to drive a manual car with some power on an empty road. I drive a manual 85hp diesel Renault Kangoo with a loaded trunk in Paris traffic all day. It feels like a purgatory.

I like the subtle mods on this one, seems like it makes it perform just that much better.

I think on the BRZ at least, other videos I have seen, they added a turbo, and it seems to have just the right amount of space in there to add one and the required tubing.
So if you need it, go for it. It will fit, it will work, and it will zing. But the majority of people maybe don't need it.
Also regarding the naming and legacy, I see it as similar to the Mustang Mach E. That car is, arguably, NOT a Mustang. It is a great EV. Ford just wanted the halo effect on it.
They could have called it the Ford MACH EV or whatever, it would have done just as well, maybe even better for not annoying a subset of Mustang enthusiasts.
But at the end of the day, is it a good car? Does it do what it needs to do? Maybe that is all that really matters.

It's extremely easy to disconnect the box that controls it. Pop off one small interior panel and the connector is right there
You can. It's buried in some settings, but it is there. Probably it turns back on every time you unplug the battery.

Hit the nail on the head of the gr86 having all the right numbers and characteristics, yet being hard to *want* want. I guess in every way it still is an *entry* level sports car
So was the ae86. I guess with time this will either prove or fail itself in it's mission. Everything we're saying now is what people used to say about the 86, and Toyota isn't a disposable product and I think we're gonna see great things from this car.

The NA FA24 is 228hp, not 277. I believe that number is for the turbo version in the WRX (which is what everyone wants Subaru to put in the BRZ).
Spoiler alert: I was expecting a pun on the GR86 name at the end. If could have been "If a car is good, it's good. And this car is great. But it's not a great-six" Missed opportunity Mr. Regular!

Needing to install "day 2 mods" like this guy did is nothing new. No 60's musclecar was ever perfect right out of the box either. Tweeking things is all part of the experience.
I think expectations have changed in the past 10 years or so. The Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger(to a lesser extent) have been MASSIVELY improved to where the factory tires are sufficiently wide, the brakes are decent to excellent(if you get the factory upgrade), the handling and suspension tune are pretty damn good out of the box. Unless you track the car on a road course or are just horsepower mad you really won't feel the need to do a bunch of mods. Even the exhausts are trick now days with a factory "LOUD" button lol

The engine is what it should have been in the first place, but still barely a tick better than the miata. A car we all know is SLOW. Hell I bet a stock nc/nd miata bottom end can make 400whp, maybe even na/nb
