I agree. I loved it, even the storyline with hunting Beckett's mom's killer. But they jumped the shark with 6x23 & could never fully recover. There was a slight rebound season 7, but season 8, especially after the breakup, that sent it straight to teh trash can. I knew then it would be cancelled unless they tried to go back to good storytelling with Caksett together.

The writing in the final season was abysmal, with Beckett leaving Castle right after they finally got married. The "Beckett's Mother" story line got real old for me, especially when Beckett's old FBI teammates were all killed, and Beckett was warned that if she continued, it was all on her. I thought she should have quit the hunt at that point. I believe that's why she left Castle - to keep him safe from the harm she was going to cause. But choosing her long dead mother over her new husband was a mistake that killed it for me.
Also, I don't believe for a second that Fillion and Katic hated each other. I would bet they had 1 fight in which Stana cried. Happens during all close relationships. How many former Serenity actors had guest appearances on Castle?? Gina, Summer, Adam... You don't offer that if you're an a$$hole on set. And you don't accept that invite if the inviter was an a$$hole on set.
I put the show's demise solely on the horrific writing in the final season, and the producers wanting to take the show in another direction that just wouldn't work.

She and Nathan were not a real couple - the writers were great at creating an illusion of closeness and caring - the business-like approach from Nathan on her exit suggests that they were business workers who tolerated each other. The rumors that Fillion was a "bully" to Katic is unsubstantiated, since no one on record is talking about the behind-the-scenes. There were some larger plot points that seemed stale to me over the last couple years - like the writers and show runners were having a problem with further developing the characters of Castle and Beckett - let's get married - have kids - and live happily ever after. Oh, let's disappear on your wedding day, show-up months later, with amnesia - and drag people along for a season - without fully explaining what happened, until its convenient to remind people that their is still a mystery to be solved months later. Not inspired writing. Very artificial and forced. And it seemed that neither character knew how to behave after jumping-the-shark. Would you, in real life, ever be able to get over being dumped at your wedding, and the person shows up months later with amnesia and no explanation of what happened or why - would you continue solving crimes with that person, let alone want them around you. The show sank because the quality of the writing went down hill.

Castle, the near perfect show, ended after season 7 as far as I'm concerned. The 8th season was a complete disaster. It took seven years to build their relationship and the writers destroyed it in the first episode of season 8. Excuse me? What idiot came up with that idea? The show was named Castle but Beckett was the main character for the whole time. The idea of not bringing her (and, for that matter, Tamala Jones) back for season nine was total lunacy. Fortunately, with the first 7 seasons on DVD, I can watch the near perfect show as many times as I want.

"Things went wrong" well before Katic's firing in Season 9. New show runners in Season 7/8 changed everything from the wardrobe to characterizations, and dramatically increased the soap opera elements of abductions, memory loss and on-again-off-again relationships for no rational reason. The fact that Ryan was no longer the always-on-point snappy dresser he had been for 6-7 seasons was a subtle hint that things were going to go downhill fast.

They didn't stay faithful to the serious and they just pushed things way too over the top. Some light-heartedness and fun is essential especially to a show like Castle but they just went way too far. I couldn't help it after that, I just tuned out. it was too bad . Running 8 seasons is great, they had a fantastic run but it's too bad that they had such a dumpster fire of a last season. unfortunately it's really not unique though. If you notice most shows find it very difficult to maintain the same level of quality all the way through especially in the last season or several seasons. Sometimes the cast gets tired, or they bringing new showrunners like in this case or something else changes and it just ends up going south for the show.

What killed Castle was the rotten cliffhanger and stupid storyline that had Rick in an accident and abducted. Give me a break. I almost didn't come back the next season because I was worried these jerks would do it again. When they start using cliffhangers, they get greedy.
Until then, I thoroughly enjoyed the show and looked forward to it every week. However, my life is not so sad that I have to spend a summer worrying what happened to a main character. I never gave a toss about who shot JR and I haven't changed . Nor do I care what kind of garbage the media rags choose to send out about supposed behind the scenes interactions.
A lot of people were furious about the cliffhanger and expressed it on social media. Many of them were done with the series and meant it. I personally dvr'd the next season and did not watch it until I was sure there were no cliffhangers. Sadly, I could do nothing about the lousy abduction story or the equally idiotic "pretend to be apart to save his life" story.

It's technically implausible to make a prequel after the actors visibly aged in the 8 years, making them approx. 10 years older than they had to be for a prequel. I don't think the roles could be recast, i don't think anybody would watch a couple young actors trying to ape the two established characters. On the other hand, a show where the same two actors act nominally different characters is just a recipe for disaster, it will invite comparisons where every similarity AND any difference will be seen as a detriment.
But a sequel is possible. Notice, the last episode of Castle effectively killed off the main characters, though with a degree of ambiguity. Say they are dead. Imagine Detective Ethan Slaughter (Adam Baldwin) makes Captain and gets transferred to the 11th to replace Beckett. Imagine every single time, Slaughter would get the wrong guy, Ryan & Espo must clear up the crime against their superior's orders and judgement. Being short on official resources because of that, they enlist the help of PI Alexis Castle and her assistant Hayley Shipton :) With time, Slaughter gets to see the true way, and Castle Investigations plays an increasingly smaller role, lending more screen time to Ryan & Espo.

The whole premise of wrapping the entire series around just two characters began to be a mistake as soon as it became evident that they didn't get along. Additional personalities should have been written into the script over time with occasional subplots for each of them. Fillion probably would have pitched a hissy because he then wouldn't have been top dog and wouldn't have the chance to chew up every scene with his most magnificent presence. However, it would certainly have toned down the ever-present tension between the two main characters and given the series some addition life with Kevin and Javier. Both were great characters and added much to the series.

Look at all the other people that he's worked with and it's never come up once, not anywhere. If anything they all say he's great to work with, very generous and likeable.
I don't get the whole 'they hate each other' thing either. People say they can see it on screen but I've never seen it. I can get behind them maybe not being best buddies and sticking strictly to being colleagues, but that's not the same thing. Sarah Michelle Gellar was apparently like that on Buffy as it was work to her, nothing more. Maybe Katic was the same and some people read it the wrong way, like with SMG.

Maintaining storylines and coming up with new material often leads these shows down weird paths. I think after 5 years they say, hell with it, this is just extra money in the pocket and lose interest. Most shows strive for 5 seasons as a goal knowing how hard it is to even get there. Both of these people are always said to be really awesome, considerate human beings, so if something went wrong in their relationship (which is only speculation stirred up by "anonymous sources") it doesn't mean one or both of them are assholes, it just means shit happened. After seven-plus years of this, it got to the point where they couldn't talk to each other off camera without blowing up. The acting style has nothing to do with this in my opinion, otherwise you don't act with a person for 8 years for many hours a day and you don't get that chemistry that Stana and Nathan had on screen. In the workplace it happens to have disagreements with colleagues and it probably happened to the two of them too. I only believe what was said of the people directly involved or of those who worked side by side with them, like that of Tamala who said "if Nathan didn't have a girlfriend you would think that Stana is". They had a beautiful relationship, which perhaps went beyond friendship. They had gone to a Duran Duran concert together in 2008: Stana had posted the ticket. They did interviews in which she sang to him and where the two looked at each other with heart-shaped eyes. These are real things, which you can see, there are videos. Everything I can see is based on one anonymous source with no backing evidence. Everyone else has been pretty professional and quiet about it.
What gets me is that so many people jump on Fillion for being a bully. He's had a reputation of being great to work with and great to the fans. This bullying also started recently. No one jumps to her doing something, or possibly Fillion having a mental problem. Bullying doesn't just happen. There's a reason of some kind. And sudden irrational anger can be caused by a problem in the brain.
Most likely, Katic was getting tired of the show. It lasted 8 seasons. That's a pretty good run. There's not that many that last that long. She may have wanted to quit, but didn't really know how. Her character IS a major factor of the show.
Fillion could have given her an out by quitting himself. He's used to being on Fox shows that don't last more than half a season. Having a successful show lasting this long just confuses him. He probably understood the show was what it is because of katic.

      @JoyD.C. Před 8 lety +19

I don't know anything about the rumors, but the idea that, "bullying doesn't just happen" is false. Bullies are angry and insecure people who pick on whatever target they can get away with. Let's use some caricatures: the "dumb jock" picking on the smart kid who isn't that physically strong. The smart kid is just being herself/himself, but the jock feels inferior because this person is smart - so the kid is walking down the hallway after a class and the jock shoves the kid into a locker. You don't have to have done anything to a bully in order for a bully to decide you're the source of their frustration or that you're the one they want to pick on.
The fact that Marlowe left and the show went in such a completely different direction from his vision suggests that someone really just didn't want the show to be about Caskett anymore - which for him was always the central story. It's what ran the show from day one. Katic was a huge Caskett shipper. If she wanted to leave it would be because the show was no longer a "love story wrapped up in a procedural."
Ultimately it was the choice by ABC Studios to take the show in this new non-Caskett direction that destroyed it. They tried to make Beckett's character less likable thinking that then fans wouldn't mind if Beckett was gone, but all that did was shine a light on how bad the writing was. They under-estimated the viewers intelligence. Most saw that LokSat was a poorly constructed plot done for the sole reason of splitting up Castle and Beckett. For whatever reason, ABC Studios chose not to honor the storylines of several years that had made the show popular. That was their mistake.

I'm on Season 4 of Castle and while I loved it, it's already rapidly changed. In Season 1, Castle felt much more intelligent. While still funny, his insights felt much more useful and he seemed like a Sherlock Holmes type thanks to all of his research in crime. After that, he seemed a bit less useful to the cases and was more like the comic relief. Plus I preferred the artsy intros in Season 1 to the generic intros afterwards.

I will never forget the "surprise" party Beckett and Castle's daughter planned for him by making him believe there was a crime in progress. It was those kinds of shows that made me want more. But inevitably the focus becomes the drama/comedy itself and now it begins to feel like a soap opera instead. At that point I look for something else. It looses its appeal.

The big problem with Castle was they misses the chance to change it up when Beckett went to work for the CIA. It ruined the show because it was no longer about cops drugs and murderers. It ended up becoming too much like Homeland and it wasn't what the show was about. In the end the writing was terrible in the last two seasons, but especially in 8. The last episode should have been built up like every other seasons and not forced on the fans. At the end of the day everyone involved are incredible actors especially Stana and Nathan

It wasn't thrown together. The showrunners filmed two endings - one for if the show was cancelled and one if it got renewed. I liked the ending. We got to see the 3 kids that were predicted by the time traveler. More than likely the alternate ending involved Beckett's death. That would've been completely ridiculous. After they got together, I still enjoyed the show. It went bad when Andrew Marlow, and his wife, Terri Edda Miller, left the show. Other than them getting married - season 7 was a trainwreck. Season 8 (with new showrunners) was marginally better than 7. The LokSat thing went on way too long. All in all, I am bummed with all the press surrounding the ending of the show. My Monday's are going to be weird without it.

***** The lumberjack ending made sense to me. The entire show is about him hating the dark passenger inside him, about him wishing he was human. He tries to form "normal" relationships the entire time but sort of always felt like an outsider who doesn't deserve it (Deb, Rita, his co-workers love). When Deb died, he broke down in a way even he didn't think he could. It was different from Rita because Deb was his blood. After that he had to punish himself and the only way he could was to isolate himself so he could do no harm to others, since he blamed himself for Debra dying.

It was a shame the way the show ended when it did. I personally think the show started to lose its way with two show runner changes at the end of seasons six and seven. This for me disrupted the continuity of the show and took them towards their inevitable demise. Also, the mythology became too contrived and far-fetched and as a result people lost interest.
I don't really believe there was a division between Fillion and Katic. Those two had such great chemistry together that it defies belief they would hate each other in real life. Both of them carried this show even though the wheels were falling off it by the eighth season. There were still plenty of great moments to enjoy from this show, particularly the first real kiss scene at the end of season four.

@@robertivey3785 that's not at all indicative of a strain in their working relationship.
There's plenty of evidence that there was no friction between the two people - the very first clip in this video shows Stana with her pinkie finger up Nathan's nose. If she hated him then there's no way she would do something like that. Then of course you can hear her laughing at Nathan's "I'm still acting" ad-lib at the end of the video.
Stana herself recently spoke of the hurt caused by the decision to not renew her for a potential ninth season. This was a decision made by ABC and had nothing to do with Nathan, who publicly stated that there cannot be Castle without Beckett.
There's just not enough evidence to support any claims that there had been a falling out between Nathan and Stana, but there's plenty of evidence that they we getting along fine.
The real truth will probably never be revealed but I am comfortable that the rumours were false, especially considering how protective of Stana some fans were and how quick those same fans were prepared to get stuck into Nathan.

Anything bad that happened to an actress, and someone was gonna start male-bashing, even if there wasn't any previous history of negative actions. The least blamey thing I've heard is that there was acting style problems. Nathan supposedly was good after 3-4 takes, and Stana was more of a perfectionist. Someone mentioned the seven year age difference between them, meaning that there was a difference in comfort levels in front of the camera. Funny how no one here mentions that the writing was awful. You can't blame the actors. They did what they could but seriously Castle had storylines that were simply too ridiculous to be taken seriously. That is what started to hurt the show. That and letting them hook up. Couldn't they just have stayed colleagues or friends that had incredible tension between them. Or why not let them stay a happy couple for at least a few years before they would screw with those dynamics.

Sexual tension has its limits. It has to come to a head eventually...for me it was a natural progression. Slower than Moonlighting. If they truly wanted it to be about Castle...then they should have never had the two hook up. They could have wrote it that she had a long term engagement that went no where...or she had a dying husband...that would have stretched it a little farther...but hey. I didn't mind the writing..only a few..wtfs...but overall it was a good murder he wrote. Hats off and bow.

They're actors, it's there job to convey the emotions their characters have and not themselves. Besides, how many co-workers do you actually like. Sure, there are those you don't mind and work well with, but would you actually hang out and get a beer with them?
No matter what you do there will always be people out there you don't like and who don't like you. I'm glad that they were seemingly professional about it, otherwise I suspect rumours like this would've been flying around for a lot longer.

There is no way they got rid of Stana for budgetary reasons, LOL. So no doubt it was internal strife. Just a question of who got too big for their britches. My guess would be Nathan as the he was supposed to be the star of the show and it was all about him, except in reality it ended up being all about her. She was the source for his inspiration. It didn't help that they made it totally focused on her and her expertise and excellence and tough as nails and all the I am woman hear me roar BS while relegating him to some emasculated joke of a sidekick. No man wants to play "desperate to please puppy" role to some chick. So if he did in fact bully her, it's unfortunate his anger was misplaced. As you point out the frickin daughter acting like she found the cure for cancer and saved the planet from some other global extinction event, and then the fact that Nathan was relegated to some little puppy role bouncing around at the feet of Becket, and as you point out the other "men" acting the part of her emasculated attendants to the queen bee, it got pretty hard to stomach. I don't blame Nathan for getting pissed off, but should have taken it out on the writers, not Stana.

yeah, what I liked about castle was that while he was a kind of happy-go-lucky guy he also had the stomach and the balls to do what was necessary. And we did see some of that in the last episode resurfacing but before that...well not really. Plus Ryan turning into a soccer mom, Espozito just becoming basically a buddy-cop tag a long with no character development. And yeah Alexis... who sure was capable even before but turned into this deus ex machina know it all who did/say whatever was necessary for the episode without a hint of previous awesome character she was. I don't mind gynocentric shows but not when they decide to throw away character development for the women who are supposed to be in the centre of it.

    • @theprogram863
      @theprogram863 Před 6 lety +2

TVTropes calls this Flandersification, where everyone slowly turns into a parody of themselves and their role on the show. It's lazy writing, especially because with Beckett's mom's case solved and Castle/Beckett together, you need SOME arc underlying the cases. Rather than trying to add drama to Castle/Beckett, they should have added more depth to the supporting cast and shifted the focus to their arcs. (And keeping Alexis perfect was foolish; you'd get way more mileage out of having her suffer some major setback or screwing something big up... and then having to climb back out of it and display resilience.)

Binge watching it sure made it easy to see the differences from season to season. 8 was a roller coaster disaster. Hard to believe that there was tension between the two since the on-screen chemistry was WOW. The separation of the 2 characters was obvious when Castle went to his PI gig and Kate was promoted to Capt. Great watching seasons 1-6 and then boom.

to be honest everything went down from the moment Castle and Beckett got together. It's was obvious on camera that something had happened between Stana and Nathan, their chemistry on camera had completely shifted. It would truly break my heart though, if the rumours about Nathan bullying Stana turned out to be true, especially since they're so out of character. I don't pretend to know Nathan at all, but the impression I got from him through his interviews etc is of a goof-ball and a really sweet guy, that he'd turned out to be horrible enough to make his co-star, or anyone else dissolve into tears just seems baffling to me.... She is sweet, intelligent, caring, respectful and delivered her work beautifully. What more do you want from an entertainer? She has spread more goodness than any other actress EVER. We all need to STOP wasting time and energy. We should thank them for their hard work and devotion, and simply move on. Creatively, the exit of creators Andrew and Terri Edda Miller signaled the beginning of the end. From a business perspective, lower ratings didn't inspire hope that the series could last much longer, but ABC's mishandling hastened the final end. The "will-they-or-won't-they" romantic tease of the Castle-Beckett relationship had been the heart of the show from the beginning, and under the Millers was allowed to progress naturally--that is, until the absurd and wholly unbelievable disappearance of Castle, in a painfully contrived effort to extend the suspense, I guess, was inexplicably written to delay the characters' (and viewers') well-earned and most anticipated storyline payoff. The behind-the-scenes turmoil probably contributed to the confusion about the show's creative direction, and the firing of Katic was simply the proverbial last straw. ABC completely underestimated Katic's value to the series, and the network deserved every bit of the negative publicity it received. Castle, the series, deserved to end in a much more satisfying way than it ultimately did.
