I heard they had a brief relationship that went bad and it divided everyone on the set into "team Fillion" or "team Katic", which basically made it men against women. It was a toxic set by season 8 with both more than reluctant to do scenes together. Fillion wanted to continue the series without Katic, like kill her off. However, in the same piece I read, it was Katic who wanted to leave the show, not being fired. She told producers that the stress of the toxic set was taking a toll on her health and she would not return for any price.

@@kimc5814 I mean good for her to be honest. She already made a lot of money from the show (respectfully). It's sad how the relationship between them was a toxic one on set. @@kimc5814 I reached similar conclusion. Castle was my pandemic binge watch. Seen all episodes 5 times over. You can see that Katic had real feelings for Fillon from beginning. Those genuine feelings made their chemistry so good. However as the time goes on I believe Katic started to be jealous of other actresses on set. You can tell things are not right when main characters suddenly lose screen time. I am guessing by the production comments that Nathan made Katic cry that Nathan did not feel the same towards Katic. That being said the show should have ended at the wedding. All episodes after the wedding can be considered alternate reality. For me the shows best ending is wedding and then them having kids. The end.

We've never had any real truth in regards to the rumours that Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic had a falling out on set that caused major problems, so those rumours have persisted in the seven years since Castle was canceled. For me personally, these two had far too much chemistry and I find it difficult to believe that things went south between them to the point they were forced to attend couples counseling despite not actually dating. Given that several of his cast mates made cameo appearances on The Rookie that's further evidence for me that there was no real tension on the set of Castle. Plus Fillion voiced his disapproval of the decision to not renew Katic's contract. If he hated her as much as the rumours suggested, would he have publicly backed her like that?
Castle's real troubles came in the form of two showrunner changes and an inevitable creative bankruptcy, leading to a deviation away from what made it successful. The peak of the show was the episode Veritas. Immediately after that came the atrociously bad season six finale that started the show's downward spiral. In the beginning they spoke of sticking to an organic progression between the characters and for the most part got it right, but after Veritas they seemed to abandon this philosophy in favour of manufactured roadblocks between the two, most infamously the opening arc of the final season. In doing so they completely undermined Katic's character who had symbolically moved on after arresting Senator Bracken. It was a major mistake having her go back down that rabbit hole and was effectively the death knell for this show as viewer numbers dropped dramatically from it.

I'd like to believe the new showrunners choosing to mix things up for the show drove the actors nuts and in doing so stressed them out which led to them taking it out on eachother too. Who knows but I doubt a cast of people who have qorked on a show for years would suddenly develop hate for one another. I hope somehow some way we can see Nathan and Stana in something together again even for just an episode.

You could tell during season 4 or 5, can't remember which, they really seemed to be in love with each other, their chemistry was too good to just be a act, then something changed in season 6. I don't know what happened, but they allowed it to destroy what was probably one of the best tv shows on the air for awhile.
For me, is has forever damaged the show. I stopped watching after season 6, and have never finished it.
I'd rather remember it for when the character were in love, then see it all fall apart. Both of them failed those characters and the fans, by letting real life come between them.
They should have ended it at season 5, after they fell apart with each other. Between mid way through season 6, the show shifted, and they started changing things, and not for the better.
Rick and Kate were the show, but for some reason Nathan thought he could carry the show without her. That was a completely brain dead move. He apparently was thinking way too highly of himself. Nathan is a great actor, but Castle is a 2 star show, the was guaranteed to fail if one of them was gone.
Today, they only know how to make crap shows, so the chances of seeing another show like Castle, or Bones, The Mentalist my favorite, is not looking very good.

Definitely the best male/female procedural (i.e. Bones, Lucifer, Mentalist) in my opinion. I think Bones was way too formulaic, after watching one episode, you saw all of them. At least Castle tried to switch up locales and types of cases...although they didnt always pull it off (spy/intelligence/private I). Losing the showrunner certainly hurt the final season, it's very clear. Also, it's clear castle and beckett are purposely filmed separately during the latter seasons, not just season 8...I read that Fillion had a condition in his contract limiting how often they filmed together. I would disagree with this video about the Dever's while cute that they were married in real life...that couple was only ever in 8 episodes through 8 seasons! The javier/ryan relationship was the second most important piece other than Castle/Beckett. Personally, I think they rushed putting beckett and castle together and they should have stretched that will they/wont they more like Bones did.

Behind the scenes, it's really sad how things ended on Castle; it was such an entertaining series.
Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic were so perfect in their roles, yo were always cheering for them to be together. It's sad that things weren't so rosy in reality.
For whoever to threaten to eliminate principal female members of the cast was thoughtless to consider.
Thankfully, as Fillion did with Firefly actors onto Castle, he's continuing that onto The Rookie. Bringing on Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones, Jon Huertas, Annie Wersching, Molly Quinn, and Toks Olagundoye onto his current project.
Castle did what I hoped other series like Star Trek Deep Space Nine did, alternate and intermix serious episodes with lighter episode during the course of the season.

I enjoyed the series a great deal, but it was painfully obvious at the beginning of Season 8 the writers didn't know or respect what had gone before; for me, the series ended at season 7, even if it was an unnecessary cliffhanger. I like both Fillian and Katic, respect their work, and liked the supporting cast as well -- there was some good chemistry there. That it had such a "crash and burn" ending is sad, but there were a lot of good episodes in between the pilot and the end of season 7. The pilot for season 8 was so horribly contrived and broke character so badly, and worse, Castle betrayed Kate so profoundly there was no real way for him to regain her trust again; it was like they wanted him single because "the ratings" were better when the tension was high, but the emotional burn was huge -- someone capable of doing what Castle showed a real lack of human compassion or understanding of human behavior, something completely at odds with Castle as a bestselling author, someone who has to get readers to empathize fictional characters. That's my reason why series 8 never took place; it was a fevered dream that never took place. Who dreamed it? Pick one of the characters, but it doesn't matter. Beckett retires from the force, has a couple of kids, then gets into politics. Castle runs around with Esposito and Ryan, but cuts back on the frequency of his detective work to focus on writing and spend time with his bride, be a dad, while dealing with Molly as a college student and his lonely and persistently visiting mother. See?

The story I heard was for the first four seasons, they were great friends. Her husband and Fillion got along great. Then, as one does, she asked for wage parity. While the show is called Castle, it is really about their relationship. Beckett being as important to the story as Castle. Stania had never been on a long running TV show, so she looked to Nathan to help her adjust to the TV schedule. So after season 4, she asked for a raise to be more in line with Nathan. He didn't like that. He apparently thought he was still the big draw and Stania was his assistant, instead of equal co-star. If this is all true, Nathan was not supportive of the change and if Stania no longer considered him her mentor, every thing he told her would have irritated her more, which in turn would have made him angry. Whether it was sudden or more of a gradual thing, we may never know. Both actors have kept a tight lid on the subject, which says to me that they are classy or there is enough there to make them both look bad.

They regressed both Castle and Becket's characterizations and wrote a sloppy espionage seasonal plot that made no sense. The fact that Beckett took the idiot ball and ran with it by not trusting either her detectives nor Castle showed no understanding of how she developed throughout the series.

She pays him a visit and tells him how she found the strength to move forward after her husband died, and telling him that it's time he honored Beckett's memory by getting himself out of his abyss, and start helping others find justice for their dead loved ones again...then, after a few episodes of cases where they get drawn together, it's off to the races with will they or won't they again.

@@kimc5814 Your idea sounds interesting to be fair, but the issue is, as I said beforehand; the show became all about Kate Beckett (possibly more so than Castle). Sure, every episode started in Castle's loft, but Castle and Beckett as a duo was obviously the main attraction of the show and the centre of attention of many episodes. Despite Stana's contract being terminated w/ ABC and the show, the character was never intended to be killed off. The revelation after the cancellation of the show was that Season 9 was going to centre the first few episodes around the couples' recovery and then hits with the epiphany/discovery that Kate is pregnant. The Season 9 was gonna try and adjust itself to feel more like how Seasons 1-3 did, but with Kate and Richard dealing with the pregnancy as the secondary focus. The proposed main "antagonist" of Season 9 was going to be a female serial killer. There has been a 23 episode fan fiction written with this directive in mind I believe.
Imo this idea that they had for season 9 should've been what they did in Season 8, but it wasn't to be. Needless to say, your idea is still very good tbf. Though, I'm not sure Kate dying would sit well with me. I simply couldn't stomach the idea that a character that focal and important throughout the majority of the duration of the show would be brutally killed off in such an anti-climactic way. Even if the new, pretty, widowed police captain was a fantastic character, I don't believe the fans would ever get over losing Beckett. I also don't see how Castle would either. 3 times married, nearing middle 40s.

I started to watch the show because even though I haven't seen anything from Nathan I have seen his name around. But stayed because of the chemistry he had with Stana and I loved his family. I was so disappointed when it was canceled and firing the female cast, wtf were they thinking? I was watching the Rookie but I heard something else about Nathan that left a really bad taste in my mouth and stopped.

I read multiple times that the Castle crew said the animosity was from him. They dated in real life, it didn’t work out, she acted professionally and he was the not so good guy. However, who knows the real truth but them. Too bad because they might have gotten a few more successful seasons. It was a good show!

From what I have heard Castle shared the same fault as the Lethal Weapon TV series, in that one of the actors thought they were more important than the series itself, //and behaved that way// not only alienating other actors but also some crew members.
I /think/ I'm right in saying that it was debatable if Katic's character was supposed to survive the S4 sniper and only persuasion made her come back to the series. That and to be frank probably paying the bills while looking for other acting jobs.
IIRC three Firefly actors did make appearances in Castle; Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres (I think), and Alan Tudyk. Also in the episode set at a science fiction convention when he hears there's been a murder Castle says 'Shiny!'
I hadn't heard about the projected ninth series and the character drops, but given that they were all - especially Beckett - central to the main story I doubt I'd have watched it anyway. In fact that pretty much proves what I said above and I suspect Katic herself may have declined another series. It might be argued that Jerald and Jones' characters weren't central but they were intertwined with the whole ensemble cast and if you tug one thread - it seems they planned tugging three threads at once - then the whole tapestry unravels. Agreed with the video that they /were/ integral.
