Frank Langella Breaks Down His Career, from 'Dracula' to 'The Americans' | Vanity Fair - Zábava
Vastly underrated performer: considered one of the best American actors.
A good dancer too
I met Mr. Langella one day on the street in NYC and he was incredibly gracious. It was literally the only time in my life when I acted a 'fan' to anyone ( we see lots of people in NY it's not a big deal). But I confessed to him I had seen him on Broadway in pretty much everything he had done and that if I saw he was going to be in it, I was going. He's an American treasure.
That's so awesome ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I wish I could meet him face to face before anything happens🤩🤩🤩🤩
Yes, I was totally in love with him in Dracula and went to see him in the Broadway version 5 times. I was all of 16. I did get his autograph once and never forgot it. It was a wonderful play, mostly because it was all done very 'tongue-in-cheek,' as they say; for laughs. I never thought that translated well in the movie version. It was his charisma that made that version of Dracula so appealing.
I'll admit it, I clicked just to hear him talk about Skeletor. It really is a fun performance, and I'm glad he still speaks so fondly about it.
still can’t believe that the guy who pulled off such a cartoon villain is the same guy who pulled off a classy and sensual, yet terrifying vampire
Ditto.
Frank Langella always said he had a lot of fun in that role and god bless him he is the best part of the movie.
If not for Skeletor, I wouldn't have clicked on this either.
Frank Langella as Skeletor is the best part of that movie. You can tell he was just having a blast going all out. His performance is so entertaining.
I love how blunt he is about his thoughts. He doesn't sugarcoat it if he thinks something was bad or not. That's refreshing. Anything he's in is better because he's in it.
He dated Whoopi Goldberg for many years. I can see why, same personality
@@andiestewart7423 Interesting, I had no idea about that.
If at age 82 he can't speak his mind.......LOL I still LOVE his Drac!
I fell madly in love with his Dracula and have been an adoring fan ever since.
Thanks for your wonderful support and encouragement towards me I really appreciate it feel free to drop a massage on my email I will be glad to receive you

It was one of the best performances EVER !!! HE WAS ABSOLUTELY "THE COUNT"
I am a huge Frank Langella fan. I just watched The Ninth Gate last night. And I have his Skeletor tattooed onto my forearm.
"Mumbo Jumbo!
Mumbo Jumbo!"
@@VerisimilitudeFilms1 then he strangles her lol
Frank Langella...what a true legend.
60 years in the business but is still super honest and humble. Phenomenal actor
Would have liked to have heard him talk about The Ninth Gate, a very underrated supernatural thriller.
"BOOO!"
I love that movie so much.
I can watch that repeatedly. Great atmosphere. The cast is great.
It's one of my guilty pleasues, watch it at least one or twice a year, it looks fabulous on Blu Ray. He's positively awesome as Boris Balkan
I was hoping for that too. That is one of my top 3 favorite movies.
I have always thought Frank Langella was the very BEST Drac every filmed. Beautifully done. And his bit about being in the Masters of the Universe; what he said about his son is exactly what we went through with our four year old son too!
He’s amazing. The definition of a true “working actors”. He’s played so many great rolls and done them so well. You could feel the ensemble feeling that he talks about in “Chicago Seven”. Hope to see him in many more roles!!
More than almost anyone, he brings the intensity of stage acting to the screen. Not an easy task; it doesn’t always translate. He’s just fantastic.
This is very true. Dracula is a good example.
This has too few views. The man is a legend.
Frank Langella is the first Dracula I watched and the most memorable too.
60 years in the business and still at it. That’s just immense. Definitely one of the all-timers. My hats off to you good sir.
I saw Dracula on Broadway and happenied to be sitting next to Tommy Smothers. Mr, Langella's performance was thrilling!. Standing ovation. He came back on stage & swirled and dashed his cape to shouts and shrieks of joy!
“ I love New York” promotional commercial with Frankl Langella dressed as Count Dracula standing in the center of all the famous stars. I’ll never forget that commercial. He is the most sensual Dracula I’ve ever seen. I would let him bite my neck. What a great voice. What a superb actor.
Oh wow, thanks for that reminder of the commercial. Yes, his Dracula was unforgettable.
I have to admit that I haven’t seen any of the pieces mentioned but it was such a treat to just listen to his calm recollections of his career. A different class of actor.
I adore him, he is exceptional, especially on The Americans.
whos here waiting for the billie eilish interview?
@@dianamariamartinez9850 nobody,she trash
Agreed
Yes, l loved Gabriel
I love this actor. Truly one of the best, most attractive & charming character actors of his generation & unfortunately under used as a leading man. Women absolutely adore him. Plus, he's a fantastic anti hero, as well.
One of my favorite actors ever. I saw him on Broadway years ago and he's just such an electrifying presence. I will always go to see everything he does. Love him.
He's right. He was AWESOME as Skeletor.
The Americans was a critically underrated show
The Americans was not only a 'critically' underrated prestige TV
Series, it was (& still is)
a 'criminally' underrated series ; in some ways like "The Leftovers" . The creative INTERIOR, the
actual content, writing, heart, mind, and Soul ; 1 of the best 20 ever, for me, if I take the time to do a full scale analysis.
Like Homeland, the West Wing, House MD, X-Files, Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and a small handful of others. A few people aren't generally familiar with, "Awake" w/Jason Issacs, only 1 season, but genius in my book.
Frank is so awesome. Such a great actor.
OMG, have been in love with him since "Dracula." I didn't get to see the play, but it caused a sensation, and I finally got to see his performance in the movie. That voice, those eyes. Wow. An incredibly gifted actor who doesn't get enough attention. Loved seeing him in The Americans, one of the best shows ever. Sorry they ended the character, interesting to know he wanted to stay. Alas.
I was lucky to see the play back in 1978; he was magnificent
He's underrated.
I saw him as King Lear at Chichester a few years ago. Absolutely brilliant performance. The best Lear I've seen live.
I had the privilege to take a class with him in October of 2005 at the Stella Adler Studio in NYC when I was pursuing acting at that time! What an amazing human being!
No matter what he is in, he has such a strong screen presence. Loved him in The Americans.
Frank Langella is an Amazing Actor. I am a big Fan.
Dear Video Editor... Please stop with so many crazy push in and pull back cuts. It's very distracting.
The constant cutting distracted me for at least the first few minutes till my brain managed to kick in and tune it out. Totally pointless cutting. Luckily the actor's words overcame it.
Yes, very annoying.
Maybe they have a duff camera lol or a duff editor 🤣
I loved Frank Langella in "Dave." His is always my favorite character in the film.
Agree. I guess I love anything about politics, but I thought Langella captured the corruption of American politics in the same way Kevin Kline captured the innocence.
Lovely interview. More of these, allowing the creators to talk about their careers in the way they wish to talk about them rather than fielding the same old questions, most of which didn't need to be asked in the first place. Wonderful career.
Love this breaking down series!Frank is such a legend.
I think he made the right decision not making Dracula talk like Bela Lugosi, in the novel Dracula speaks without an accent.
Been madly in love with Frank since Diary of a Mad Housewife and he's still my favourite Dracula. 🖤
He was amazing in that. Great but lesser known film.
I wanted to be Frank Langella in Dracula.
Thanks for your wonderful support and encouragement towards me, I really appreciate it feel free to drop a message on my email i will be glad to receive you

Frank Langella brought Skeletor to life! If it wasn't for his performance in this movie, it wouldn't be the cult classic that it is today. As a kid in the 80's, I saw this in the theater 5 times just because of his performance.
I think I'm the only one who clicked because I was hoping to hear him talk about his performance in THE NINTH GATE. Lol
No, I was hoping that too;)
You're not the only one.
I was also hoping that. Can it be he doesn't know what a great character Boris Balkan was?
Exact-a-mundo.
His best role by far. And I've seen it s hundred times. Easily one of the best villains in film history.
I just loved you as Dracula, So romantic and sleek. I love you to this Dayt!
I know the man's had a long and varied career, but I'm so, so glad to see he still considers Skeletor as one of his favorites. The movie may be pure cheesy fun, but Langella is awesome in the part.
Frank Langella's Nixon is the best. :-))
god his Dracula was so enchantingly exquisite
Mr.Langella, I loved you in Dracula, you were absolutely stunning ,there are several men who played Dracula ,but no one compares to you , ❤️ your my favorite Dracula and I do love all your movies you have acted in, but you are definitely a handsome man I must add , thank you for years of fantastic movies you have definitely out did yourself, Love to you always ❤️ a fan for life!
His talking about Masters of the Universe reminds me so much of Raul Julia in Street Fighter. Utterly forgettable movies, except for their fantastic villains. Julia also did Street Fighter because his grandchildren were huge fans of the games.
Children, not grandchildren.
Grandchildren????
Yeah Julia really put a lot of heart into that role. If I go back and watch that movie, it is to see him. He also did really good as Gomez in the Addams Family movies.
Ehh excuse me, Masters of the Universe is one of my favourite films. It's cheesy yes, but thoroughly entertaining and infinitely re-watchable. Frank makes it one of the most quotable films too, and not many movies can say that, so "utterly forgettable" is not just off the mark - it's off the planet!
Stop zooming in every second word. It's irritating.
YES! Finally someone else calls them out on this. It's TERRIBLE editing.
He's always been one of my favorite actors since I first saw Dracula as a kid. Thanks for making this!
A great actor, but his best role was missing here: Boris Balkan in Polanskis "The ninth gate"
Yeah better to bring up Masters of the Universe than a Polanski film these days....
I wonder why they omitted The Ninth Gate; because of Polanski? Or did Langella not want to talk about it. Thought he was extraordinary in that film.
“Mumbo jumbo!”
Came here to say just that!
eeegads. I saw The Ninth Gate and had to fast forward. It was dull.
I would PAY to see him do his Skelator performance once again!
His turn as Skeletor was outstanding. Credit to him for not being snobbish about the film.
He did a three episode run of deep space nine. Another role he did for his son.
Yes! Love love love Langella. Diary of a Mad Housewife and Dracula made huge impacts on me. So freakin’ handsome. Americans was so great. Now to find him in Chicago 7...fabulous.
Frank Langella is having an amazing career and after listening to this interview, I'm sure has the respect of everyone who listens. I respect that he won't as he said do CRAP. Mr.Langella is sure to win along with many of his cast members in his last movie mentioned " The Chicago 7" it's incredibly well written, acted and relevant . Thank you sir and God bless ..
His performance as Skeletor was phenomenal
You certainly were amazing and made a lasting, startling effect on me when you came on the screen in Diary of a Mad Housewife!!
I just saw Chicago 7!! Wonderful movie!!
Thanks for sharing your acting time line!
Bravo Mr. Langella!!!
☆☆☆☆☆
He played an excellent villain in Cutthroat Island, too (a very underrated film IMO). In general terms, he plays in a very authentic way all his characters and villains.
I loved him in CUTTHROAT ISLAND! He was so charismatic. A great villain.
One of the best American actors working today. Funny how Hopkins and him keep playing the same parts, Nixon and now The Father
Frank Langella made Masters of the Universe a movie. Skeletor made this a good movie for me. Frank Langella is an amazing Actor! 👏🏾
A truly master of his craft. Thank you for your eloquence, your dedication and sharing your wonderful talent with us. For me, you are the finest Dracula the screen has given us. Grazia Maestro. Michael - South Africa.
Frank Langella was a theater actor on Broadway back then. He played Dracula and did Richard Nixon on Broadway and in the Ron Howard movie as well. He has no Oscar, but he won four Tony awards on Broadway but the biggest that he won for playing the Father and Richard Nixon
Wonderful interview! Mr. Langella is also great playing the ominous Jaro Esso in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine classic episodes The Homecoming, The Circle, and The Siege.
Great actor.
I love his lack of pretense and his candor.
Thanks for your wonderful support and encouragement towards me I really appreciate it feel free to drop a massage on my email I will be glad to receive you

I became a massive fan when I saw his Dracula - and he was right about how he played the character (I'm sure it inspired Louis Jordan when he played that role). Always enjoy his honesty and intelligence on screen. Thank you!
Actually the BBC version with Louis Jordan to me was closer to Bram Stoker's Dracula to me. The only thing it shared with Frank s version is they dressed the same. Not many people talk about the Louis Jordan version. It was a 2 part series, wasn't it. The woman who played Andromeda in Clash Of The Titans played Mina
"Everything comes to he who waits!"
Frank Langella is one of the greatest of all time. I watch 'Robot & Frank' at least a couple of times a year with my daughter, it is one of our favorite movies.
I've read his autobiography "Dropping Names" twice. It is humorous and revealing. He is a brilliant story teller. A must read.
Mr Langella, I rediscovered you in watching The Americans. Your portrayal of Gabriel added much gravitas to an already outstanding series. Thank you.
One of my very favorite actors ever. The best version of Dracula, IMO. Frost Nixon one of the best films ever and a true masterpiece of acting.
This interview is absolutely fascinating. Anyone who acts in the theater and films should listen to this. Langella is very intelligent about how he approaches his characters (his "guys") and how he works with costars and directors and the kinds of parts he chooses, including the ones he initially believes he's not right for. I heartily recommend his 2012 memoir DROPPED NAMES in which he profiles the actors, actresses, directors, writers, politicians, and other notables he's met over his career. His profiles of George C. Scott, Raul Julia, Ida Lupino, Jo Van Fleet, and Alan Bates are especially poignant and rewarding.
Legend, been a fan for decades. He was fantastic as the judge in the Trial of the Chicago 7.
Such a wonderful actor; underrated really. Looking forward to watching his movies I haven’t seen yet.
Seriously, what’s with the choppy editing? Made my brain hurt...
This was great and I loved the stories about playing Dracula on stage in NY too!
I loved him as Dracula! Also The Box. He is a phenominal actor!
The most Supreme Dracula of ALL TIME!!!
Dracula, The Ninth Gate, & Frost/Nixon are genuinely amazing films. Frank Langella is a fantastic actor.
How is his skin looking so amazingly smooth and moist? He's over 70 years old.
Yes, he's still so handsome!
Post production filter.
Yes--I was marveling at how beautiful his hands are.
What do you expect? He's Dracula.
He's also over 20, and he's over 80.
Awesome, what a treat, thank you.
Well Frank, I came to you late in your career but I was instantly taken aback by your performances. Now that I know more about you I’m going to find your earlier stuff. I think you’re fantastic my man in everything I’ve ever seen you do.
Huge Frank Langella fan. I loved seeing him in The Ninth Gate, Unknown, and The Box. Such subtle gesturing. He can tell a whole story with a gesture.
"Starting Out In the Evening" is a wonderful film - Frank Langella is incredible in it.
So wonderful to see him again. I've been following his career since the 70s. He's a true artist!
Skeletor is one of the best villain performances ever. And he basically did this under their crazy filming conditions
What a true, well spoken gentleman! It was a pleasure to hear about his career here! Thanks Vanity Fair!
Forever my Dracula. And, one of the greatest actors of our time.
What a brilliant character actor. He had the matinee looks but you could see he was meant for character roles. Scared the crap out of me as a small kid as Dracula because he was so softly spoken. It was compelling watching him play Nixon with an actor's honesty to finding's a character's truth. I was especially taken with Gabriel in The Americans. He has such presence on screen in all his roles. It's wonderful to hear him talk through his most memorable roles. I dearly would love to see him in even more meatier roles as the sun sets on his great career.
The Twelve Chairs and Robot and Frank are still among my favorite films of all time. I wish I knew more people I could talk about them with.
Great actor, Mr Langella. His Dracula is so awesome.
What a bloody legend
Wonderful look at Langella’s career!
I'm here for the Skeletor talk 😁
Great actor. Also insanely attractive guy in his prime too (still is in his senior years, let's face it). You can see why the ladies went wild for him in the 70s!
Thank you He is one of my favorites.
Frank did a great job as Skeletor. he is one my all-time favorite movie villains. the 5 yr old that i was when Masters Of The Universe released in theaters in 1987 enjoy him and the film VERY much. today, i still love the film. always will.
by far the most interesting, and re inventing of Dracula there ever was, fantastic we watch this over and over
It's wonderful to hear actors talk about periods when their careers stand still, I think we tend to think that having a hit movie makes you successful and then that's it. Frank is a sublime actor, very believable. I first saw him in Cutthroat Island as a kid in the mid 90's.
A MasterClass! A truly incredible and absolutely incredible MasterClass!Thank Yoit
Mr.Frank Langella..for me.. you interpretate the Dracula's person much better than others..congratulations
Always great
What a wonderful talk! I had not realized how many fascinating roles he had. I DO remember going to see Masters of The Universe and realizing part was through that Langella was far and away the best thing in it. I remember there being one scene, which I do not even recall, when I said “oh my god, he is doing an amazing job here !” I realized that even it terrible movies, there can be people doing everything they can with a character. There are also now a couple more movies I need to watch or rewatch.
The Americans is by far the best television show I've seen so far in my life.
It's definitely in my top 3
Couldn't agree more. Utter brilliance.
Love his Dracula. One of my favorites.
