    I woke up one morning with a very croaky voice but no pain , so I took an antiseptic but no effect. Repeated this for a week then went to the doctors he sent me to hospital for tests this went on for a few months. Eventually a specialist did an inspection with camera and took a biopsy. Two weeks later I got called in for results. My wife insisted on coming with me. The specialist said what do think the problem is ? So I said, I have had so many tests I think it is cancer. The specialist yes you are right. My wife burst into tears and I went over to calm her down. I told her now I know I can fight it, and I felt relieved knowing what it was. After the operation they removed the growth and a vocal cord. I couldn't talk and was writing things down, I wrote a message to the wife saying I can't talk she said to me you are married to me you don't need to talk you need to listen lol.

    I Googled my symptoms, went to my Dr., told him I wanted a biopsy on a lump on my arm. Biopsy done, cancer confirmed. Non-hodgkin's lymphoma at 42. Honestly, I felt vindicated as my medical complaints fell on deaf ears for over a year. Put all my faith in the medical treatment. I accepted my reality, using visualization during chemo. I just had my 60th birthday February 1st. My youger brother died of cancer at 46. Go figure. Gratitude, everyday is a blessing. Be kind to one another.

      Do you mean that the medical profession ignored your symptoms for a year until you specifically asked for what you wanted? I know someone currently in the same situation. Unfortunately looking like it's too late for her. It's getting diagnosed early enough because the delay is the killer not necessarily the cancer.

      I'll second that. I've always been interested by what goes on in the UK as I'm as interested in world events as much as I am in US events here at home. And the UK being our cousins across the Atlantic have held a special place in heart especially with things like Monty Python, Red Dwarf, Midsummer Mysteries and lots of other bits of music, television, movies, authors and comedians. So for a number of years now I've listened to the BBC overnight on my local NPR station or on PBS or wherever, but James and his callers provide me with a wonderful deeper dive into a few topics every day with these shows. And Mystery Hour on Thursdays is a wonderfully entertaining treat. Cheers Anjelina!

    You James O’Brien are very brave taking these calls about cancer. My story - grew a golf ball size lump out my sizeable right breast and was convinced it was a blocked milk duct (my children were 6 and 8). When they told me it was cancer it was like being hit with a cricket bat. My husband, however, acted like he had been hit with a cricket bat and his 6ft 2” body collapsed to the floor in a heap and 3 beautiful young nurses helped him on to the bed I had been sitting on. It is a great shock. However James I had a mastectomy followed by chemo and radiotherapy which wasn’t great fun but heyho that was 29 years ago. How lucky am I? The other plus was that my hair fell out after the first chemo but when it grew back in it is the😅 best hair I’ve ever had. My friends and husband were a wonderful support and my pay back was supporting other women going through the same and working as a counsellor.

    I had a colon cancer diagnosis about 10 years ago. I don't think there's much you can generalise about what that is like, except that your own reaction may surprise you. It certainly teaches you something important about yourself. When I woke up from that colonoscopy, the gastroenterologist seemed genuinely upset delivering the bad news. She was almost in tears, while I was fairly unmoved. My strongest emotion was the desire to comfort the doctor who seemed to be doing much worse than me. I was a professor in a medical School at the time, teaching (among other things) cancer genetics so I was not particularly bewildered by the experience. I ws in New York at the time, and I must say It was a privilege to spend time with all the wonderful, caring and clever people I met through 2 years of treatment who saved my life. It was unpleasant, but a great learning experience, and the dark humour we shared turned what could have been a nightmare into a bit of a lark, only with chemo and surgery.

    I can't emphasize this enough:
    STOP BLAMING THE DOGS.
    Pitties are actually naturally docile. They're GREAT family dogs. They only become hostile and violent when the OWNER trains them to be, either with intent or through mistreatment.
    The same as with virtually every breed. In fact, mini breeds are FAR more hostile and violent, only limited by their diminutive size.
    That the entire breed has been stereotyped so profoundly that people want them KILLED by default is as disgusting as it is irrational.
    It's not the dogs. Blame the people.

    • @tompearce3610
      @tompearce3610 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The owners are often the problem rather than the breed but the difficulty is training the dogs and the owners so there isn't a danger. The more powerful the dog, the greater the danger.

    • @nothereandthereanywhere
      @nothereandthereanywhere Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@tompearce3610 I agree with you on this. It is the owners, not the dogs. A dog is a reflection of the owner. Many owners are just... Lacking the sensibility. And strong dogs require strong hand, rule. Many of those dogs don't have it.
      Do we ban them, or require the training? I personally would be for the latter. Not just for XL bulls. But many other breed as well. Many large dogs would benefit from it. But it would be expensive, so not popular. So it is banning a breed that is in spotlight. Cheap solution for cheap people.

    • @tompearce3610
      @tompearce3610 Před 6 měsíci +1

      It is problematic and unfortunately many of the people who choose powerful dogs don't know how to manage/train them. Then in many cases it's a question of when something will go wrong and how badly. You almost need a driving test equivalent for at least some breeds. Dogs and most owners would rather get it right but it doesn't come naturally.

    My husband was in this same position in June 2021 after being in pain for almost 2 years whilst 15 specialists could not find the problem and every single one said that it was not cancer, a biopsy ultimately showed a very aggressive cancer at stage 4. He is now "clean" as they say in this world, but, it will never leave us.
    All I can say is, with hindsight, it is sometimes better to not know as one ends up in a relentless speedtrain with an unknown destination and you need all your energy ( physical and mental) and positivity to get through whatever treatment is offered. It also immediately makes one look at everything in life differently. I still do not have the strength to revisit this period in our lives. We cherish and embrace each moment of each day now.

    Imagine trying to claim that its the same for the King getting an early cancer diagnosis because he gets regular private health checks, as it is to the common person who gets the same diagnosis but months later due to waiting lists and is told that they'd have stood a better chance of surviving if they had caught it sooner. Or that common person wondering how they will manage to provide for their family through treatment, not sure the King will have those worries. His chances of surviving will be several times higher than the common person with the exact same health issue, to even compare them is disgusting

    In that first second or minute that you first hear the word cancer, time stops, everything fades and you have an almost out of body experience. It was my husband who was diagnosed. I still have not asked him how he felt. We have decided to park this time in our lives for now and to just continue living.

      Totally agree. I simply see labour as the other side of the same coin! I think change could very well be on the way. I've never seen such tension and anger in this country. You can also see more and more extremes and the age old divide and rule. They want us bickering over nonsense like Rwanda so we can find no common ground. If we find common ground suddenly their power begins to diminish!

    I don’t think I had put it out of mind, but the first call in really took me back to accompanying my grandfather to his melanoma diagnosis. Being there for support the moment felt simultaneously absolutely profound and extraordinarily ordinary. My grandfather had had a cancer removed some years before. We went and got lunch at his regular after although thinking back now it might have been a day later and it seemed in some ways like every other time and still so different. There was not long after that.

    Rishi just panicked because he's a silly man, and he stuck his hand out because he couldn't think sensibly. He's a bit dim and he couldn't keep himself calm and say "No, that's crass", and actually scored points, but he couldn't think calmly enough to respond as the statesman he's supposed to be.

    No. You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried. Prince Charles will receive immediate treatment and not be on a waiting list. That in itself changes his reaction to the average man or woman in the streets reaction to the bad news to suggest otherwise is beyond ridiculous, sometimes James your upper middle-class, well-paid lifestyle spills over into your opinions. This being one of those occasions. Of course receiving the news would’ve been upsetting, but the fact that he will receive immediate treatment without worrying about being on a waiting list or being treated in our overworked underfunded NHS hospital puts him in a better position than most people who have been given that news. Give your head a wobble James.

    Just a thought, lots of talk about one man with a cancer diagnosis which could ultimately bring an earlier death than maybe expected, while, as a country, our leaders support a war where thousands of innocent people are being killed every day, losing their lives, is a choice that's being supported by the same leaders. One person who might die vs thousands who will definitely die. Seems a bit hypocritical somehow.
