01:28 1. Using A Blade That Is Not Sharp Enough.
I think it's a number one problem because most men out there today use cartridge razor systems. Now, there's a lot of marketing hype out there from brands like Dollar Shave Club or Gillette but if you take a closer look at their marketing, you'll notice they never actually mention the sharpness of the blade, they talk about the convenience of the shape, the fancy handle, the lubrication strips, the number of the blades which reaches all the way up to six or seven blades but they never mention the sharpness.
04:34 2. Not Doing The Proper Prep Work Routine.
Most men we interviewed didn't want to spend a whole lot of money upfront and they wanted a routine that was easy for them. I hate to break it to you but both these criteria will not result in a good shave.
08:01 3. Not Using Proper High Fat Lubrication.
Not understanding the growth direction of your facial hair. Every man out there is unique and because of that, the hair grows in unique directions. To get the best quality shave, you have to understand how your hair grows so you can shave exactly the way you want it for the best results.
10:28 4. Not shaving in multiple passes.
In an ideal world, we'll just shave our face with one pass and be done and happy. Unfortunately, that's not how it goes. So how do you get the closest shave possible? It's by shaving against the grain of the hair. Why is that? Well, the razor and the blade lift the hair away from the skin. Therefore, you cut the hair actually below the skin level. So for example, if we do a wet shave with a sharp blade, after one day the result is as smooth as if I had just shaved with an electric shaver or a cartridge razor.
11:20 5. Not properly lubricating your skin before and while you shave.
Frankly, lubrication is the only thing that protects your face from the sharp blade. You need lubrication so the sharp blade can glide across your skin, cutting the hair but not your skin. When it comes to shaving, there's no such thing as over lubricating, more helps more. Unfortunately, most men out there don't lubricate enough and often, it comes down to a bad product in the first place. The lubrication in shaving creams comes from fat so the higher the fat content, the more of a gliding effect you get.
13:23 6. Not using a shaving brush to create your lather.
It creates a nice rich lather and it also helps to move the hair follicles away from the skin so the shave quality is going to be better. Let's explain that shaving brushes are made of boar's hair and it can be quite hard in your skin and uncomfortable because of that I prefer badger shaving brushes. The best quality is the silver tip which is finer and again, it can take a little bit of testing with different brushes to
find something that's right for you.
15:05 7. Not incorporating an electric razor into your shaving routine.
Frankly, if I lather up my shaving cream, maybe do two passes with a double edge razor, the whole routine still takes quite a bit of time. So because of that, I experiment with electric razors. They've been around for a while, you can use them dry and frankly, the results are not great but it takes you two minutes.
16:25 8. Not adhering to a proper pre-shave routine.
Why should you have a pre-shave routine? Well, it's better for your skin and it results in a better shave that is closer to your skin. If you suffer from little bumps on your skin, known as razor bumps, or if you have any kind of irritation, or if you're just sensitive, having a pre-shave routine is essential. Also, if you use very sharp blades or a straight razor, I would strongly suggest you have a pre-shave routine.
17:52 9. Giving up a new routine too quickly.
I get it, learning technique is not easy but deep down it's very simple and just like with anything in life, it takes time to master something and that's also true for shaving technique. So my advice is if you try something new, especially with a sharper blade, do your prep work and don't just give up. - Jak na to + styl

I don't know I'm 8 minutes in wondering why anyone would obsess so much about shaving.
I guess it is different for me since I have very fine and sparse reddish hair making it pretty much impossible for me to grow a beard (a light goatee is doable) and a cartridge razor shave lasts 3 days before I have to shave again. If you have to shave daily with thick black hair, I guess getting a quality shave would be more important.
I was actually just looking for tips on how to shave the neck line / under the chin of a goatee when I landed here.
When you get older your skin will no longer be a smooth flat surface that it has always been to you. Yet at the same time you grow more facial hair than ever. When you're 45, 55 you've only spent a decade or less with aged skin. It's a strange experience to every guy who are used to having a smooth and firm skin for 40 years of their life. Hence some guides might be necessary.

My perfect routine:
Hot shower
Hot towel
Apply pre shave oil and massage it in
Lather up the soap with a brush
Shave with straight razor
Wipe of all excess with a ice cold towel press it onto the skin
Apply some oil for skin care.
Takes 10 min and is the best shave you will ever have.

@@gentlemansgazette l hate shaving but l also hate having stubble, it has a habit of snagging on some of the clothes l wear, tried all types except the cut throat, now use a brush with a double edge blade, as an aside whenever a cut throat is mentioned it reminds me of one of the Clint Eastwood westerns, he is sitting in the barbers chair having a shave when the three gunslingers walk in, soon to be shot, never did get his shave!!!!!!!

It's worth noting that some people, particularly men with extremely curly hair should not shave against the grain. Doing this can result in ingrown hair.

I have curly hair but my hair doesn’t have the tightest curls since my hair is so thick it usually contains 3-4x the thickness of a person with tight curls but I haven’t had any problems with shaving against the grain even with a cartridge razor especially around the mustace area, it’s like I’m removing the hair without feeling it not just shaving it. However shaving you know where is impossible for me without getting irritation or cuts.
@@secretjuice1183 I know your pain, I even resulted in using hair removal wax (biggest mistake of my life next to saying the dentist, "just pull that tooth out" thinking it hurts less than root canal therapy). If you don't mind the pain, sugar waxing (or whatever brazilian waxing is called) is pretty affective.......again IF you don't mind the pain

Not even with curly hair. Cutting wet hair skin level will cause that hair to go inside the skin when dry. Ergo, ingrowths.
If you have sensitive skin, it is also a good idea to shave in the evening, so you have all night for your skin to relax and regenerate and to use aftershave product not only right after but later as well. Personally, I shave every Sunday evening to start the week with a clean shave, and I apply aftershave on Monday morning and evening as well.
Also good for people who shower in the evenings, since the hairs will be loosened up from the steam.
@@quinnobi42 you just need to use a razor with less blades. More blades means more ingrown hairs. Look into safety razors

I started using a traditional safety razor a few months ago and it gives me something to look forward to every couple of days, it's much more enjoyable.

I just purchased the guide. Sven didn’t use hype or gimmicks to promote the guide - instead, he presented useful, compelling information to demonstrate its value. That’s how you sell a product.
The most important thing about shaving is to slow down and not be in a hurry.
Took me nearly a year of occasional attempts and cuts to be able to comfortably shave with a straight razor. Now I do it with ease and I couldn't be more pleased with the shave. Great pants Raphael
I’m in the military and because of that I have to shave every day. I’ve been dealing bumps and skin irritation for years and have tried everything I can think of to get a good shave without the irritation and bumps. Definitely going to check out your guide. Thanks for the upload
Seth Watson if your shaving implement is new and sharp try shaving in the direction recommended elsewhere on the web. Otherwise a dull razor causes you to press harder or shaving each area repeatedly which is just shaving layers of skin and as the skin grows back it covers the growing hair follicles causing major problems.
Do they make you shave against the grain? I've always been curious.

@@Potarnul And while people on the US Military cannot have beards, mustaches are allowed as long as they fit very specific qualifications (they can’t go past the corners of the upper lip, cover the mouth, or look chopped off and bushy)
After seeing some videos from GG on double edged safety razors, I ended up purchasing an Edwin Jagger razor and a full box of Parker Platinum blades about a year ago (it's was the best price-to-performance I could find at my local men's care shop, and with me being clumsy at times, I didn't want to spring for too much). Since then, I've been hooked on the DE razor and shaving soap. It has been the closest and the least aggressive shave I've had ever.
I couldn't help but notice how the plant behind him makes him look like he has an Afro.

Excellent video! I have suffered from ingrown hairs for decades and have switched between cartridge razors and electric razors many times, without ever being satisfied. I have never seen the pros and cons of ALL shaving methods explained so clearly in a video. The bit on the upfront and the ongoing costs of each method was also very helpful. Very well done and thank you
Glad it worked for you. I went back to cartridge shaving after DE shaving for five years. I bought top-end DE razors and learned the technique, but will never touch DE shaving again as I find cartridge razors (Mach3 or Wilkinson Hydro3) give me a closer, more comfortable, and much quicker shave.
My great uncle, who died aged ninety six more than forty years ago, used what you call straight blades. He had a beautiful set of seven, with ivory handles, in a mahogany case. He sharpened the blades himself. I still remember his extremely smooth complexion: his skin literally shone.
Ha, I use feather blades with a slanted merkur DE razor, really enjoy shaving with it. Especially as my beard is like wire at some points.

By my experience it's much more likely you'll cut yourself with a duller blade than a sharper. It just doesn't cut the way you want, you try more passes, dirrerent angles and sooner or later you'll make a mistake. With a sharp blade one or two passes are plenty for a quick daily shave and 3 if you want it really smooth.

I’ve always just used an electric razor first and then I use a regular razor after it’s a lot easier to shave that way than just using a regular razor

I like that you touched on the effort needed to master these tools and the time involved. I used an Atra for a few years, went to a DE for about 25 years, then moved to an SE for 7 and now I use a straight (Yes, I'm old). As far as actual shaving time the DE wins for wet. Even over Mach 3 and Hydra razors. Two sides of easy-cleaning, non-clogging blades just can't be touched. The electric shaver is faster for a one day growth but with several days growth the DE becomes competitive.
The straight is the slowest. I just now timed my daily shave---lather, strop (40 laps), shave (just 2 passes) , aftershave, brush-care, razor-care & clean-up: 15 minutes

I used to shave against the grain, and I noticed that I was having constant acne on my chin. Eventually I realized that my shaving was causing it, and when I began shaving with the grain, the acne went away. I did miss the perfectly smooth skin that my old method had made for.
A while later, though, I decided to grow a beard, and so now I only really do a close shave on my neck and the parts of my cheek where I have some stray hairs above my beard.

I’ve been using a straight razor for three years now and it truly is the best shave there is. When I started it was horrible, I cut up my face pretty badly, I was bleeding everywhere and a day later I got an infection, but I decided to carry on since I realised all the problems stemmed from my incompetence. And sure enough, it got better, first the infections went away, then the irritation and now I it’s almost perfect. I am a man of principle, so I break my routine very rarely and I also never considered abandoning this type of shaving, it takes about an hour to complete and I truly enjoy the process. I usually listen to Al Bowlly or Bob Scholte, which for me became part of the ritual and I love how smooth my face feels afterwards. I don’t mind having to spend all that time in the bathroom, I learned to always make time to shave properly, because I believe we should take care to do every little thing in our lives the proper way, that way we can live proper, satisfying lives and be truly happy with the way we live and act.

I am all in with the Feather and Merkur 37c combination. It is my favorite combo too. For lubrication i am using the sandalwood shaving soap from Klar Seifen with a silvertip badgerbrush.
good advice. I'm switching from a cartridge. my father used a double edged blade and shaved the night before. he always appeared to have a great shave. I also like loccitane shave soap.
You hit all the points perfectly. After years of red irritated skin and stubble scraps in the contours with overpriced cartridge razors, I switched to DE and proper shaving soap with a brush. It does take time to find the ideal gear and hone the technique.
I finally settled on the Merkur Progress with Nacet or Feather blades and Tabac soap with a good badger brush. Perfect shave every morning in about 8 minutes.

Great video! I use the feather double edge blade and find I have to change it every 3 or 4 days. Sometimes I get a bad blade that doesn’t shave well, and other times a get a blade that lasts longer than usual. Unlike the Carthage blades that uses multiple blades to shave rather than sharpness; the single blades rely on sharpness, so if the blade isn’t sharp the shave will be worse than a dull cartage!
I want to try the straight razor but I am afraid of cutting myself; plus it takes a lot more time which means forget doing it before work, and it shaves so close that it can’t be done everyday anyways. If I were to try a straight razor, it would be a once a week thing on the weekends when I have the time.

Guys, here's another tip: use shaving foam and aftershave (if you use aftershave) with little or no alcohol. Alcohol dries out your skin and will age you worse. I don't use aftershave personally as I cleanse with a gentle cleanser after shaving, continuing on with my skincare routine.
Some good points here but frankly I am surprised that you didn't bring up shaving in the shower itself. I've found that to be the single best thing for my skin when it comes to shaving. I do it last so the hot water and steam the shower has had time to work.
I got an adjustable DE razor and i'm never going back. I tried it because of one of your earlier videos and i can not thank you enough! It changed a lot about the way i look and the way i perceive myself.
By the way Merkur Slant + Feather blades sounds like the mist aggressive shaving combination i can thing of.
Great information and advices as usual but you should also do an episode on vintage razors. With most of the vintage ones you can use modern blades. I use a solid brass Gillette safety razor from the 1930:s and absolutely love the feeling of it.
Once again, I'm totally blown away by the depth of the content. I think it is worth noting that one may find trying to achieve a close shave with an electric razor can cause a great deal of irritation, in and of itself. I personally use a Merkur Heavy handle safety razor with Feather New Hi-Stainless, Platinum coated blades, 3x a week and an electric the other days. This affords a super close shave, on the days I want/need one, and a quick/while driving on the remainder. I've found that PORASO Pelli Sensibili or NIVEA Sensitive shaving cream to be the best price/quality, products. The NIVEA is hard to find though. The packaging is usually in Cyrillic or German. NIVEA Sensitive, Post Shave Balm is a great aftershave and the scent is mild enough to not interfere with any fragrance I might, afterward.
Great video! I have been shaving for 30 years only to find out I have been doing it wrong. I mostly grew my beard to avoid the annoyance and irritation of shaving. I mean it does look great but after watching this maybe it is time to let it go and see how I look with a clean shave. Thank you.

I went from shaving (and hating it) to letting my beard grow. Trimming and grooming is just as much work as shaving but it is not as bad for my skin and there is not cutting yourself!

Used to shave with a safety razor, but now shave with a bonded twin blade. The handle I use is the old fashioned non pivoting because I control the shave while pivoting handles take away control. Another big difference is shaving cream and preparation. Getting the correct warmth and set up shave cream is very important.

I just tried to shave for the first time in 20 years. I user a safety razor instead of cartridges. It went splendid, no razor burn. I only used a beard trimmer on my face since I was 20 because of razor burn. Also I shaved my head for the first time not using a beard trimmer. Smooth as Jordans head, not so much as a scratch. Great stuff thanks for the advice.

I've used Crabtree & Evelyn shave soap for years - and then a year or so ago - they went all 'trendy millennial' and discontinued all of them. I look forward to reading your guide. I like the idea of a traditional razor and a good sharp blade.
I've been using a straight razor for a couple of years now, and if I need to I can usually get decent shave in 5-10 minutes due to the extra width it offers, but it took a lot of practice and a few nicks at the start to get to the point where I can do that

I recently purchased a Rolls Razor to use along side my electric trimmer. Phenomenal shave and a wonderful piece of history from the 50's.
i started with a straight razor and switched to using a double edge exclusively. I even had the stones to sharpen the razor (I love keeping my kitchen knives super sharp). Every few weeks I needed to put it back on the stones even with a nice razor strop. Ultimately, I switched to feather razors and I found the results to be better than a straight razor. Even if you go to a barber that offers a straight shave, they will often use a disposable blade.
I've been told that in the days when straight razor was the usual way of shaving, men often shaved every other day rather than every day.
I grew up with a safety razor (double edge). In my mid 30s, I tried using a cartridge razor for a year or so and never liked them much so I went back to the safety razor.
I'm not positive, but I think that I'm still using the same safety razor today (except for the blades, of course) that I first used when I started shaving more than 50 years ago.
I had issues with irritation and in-grown hairs after shaving when using even the more expensive disposable razors and canned creams. Once I switched to a good quality double sided safety razor, shaving soap and brush, those issues disappeared. Plus, I also saw a dramatic savings. I've been using this combination for over a decade.
What I’ve always done is use an electric razor first and then I use a regular razor the electric razor helps make your face smoother so it’s easier for the regular razor to glide while shaving rather than pulling

@@aokiji2529 Probably health and safety. When I lived in China, I had a guy shaving me on a regular basis. There are health problems if they're not keeping the blades clean and if they slip, you're either disfigured or dead.
Still, I get why people used to do that, it's a very relaxing experience.
I switched to a double safety razor years back and for me it's the best shave for the end price. When my ladys boys needed to learn both looked terrified of the razor. So they tried cartridge razors. We also picked them up electric razor so they could do quick shaves. The system seems to work reasonably well. Good video. Now to try and get the teens to watch it so they see I'm not the only one who shaves that way.

I agree 100 percent with you. I did everything you talked about and ended up with DE razor with Feather blades and Art of shaving cream (ocean kelp). Doesn't smell great but lathers and protects my delicate skin.

I think the ritual of fathers passing on information to sons has fallen out of favor. Nowadays you can just google "how to shave" and get 10 different techniques and contradicting messages and sponsored videos that want to sell products to you.
My dad never taught me. I moved out at 17 but still, I had to Google it 😂
I'm 37 I just learned how to shave. I've been shaving since 19 but I'm black so I was destroying my face. When I was in the army I used clippers got out and stopped shaving. While at work I asked one of my buddies how he got his beard to connect, he said razor I'm looking at him and his hair is thicker than mine. He told me soften your hair lubricate your skin and cut with the grain. First time in my life I've been able to shave with a razor everyday. No bumps at all.
I do think that a lot of this has to do with not being taught how to shave. Personally, my Dad always had a beard, so the only parts of the beard he needed to shave were the easiest bits. He started growing a beard a couple decades before I needed to learn, so even if he was going to teach me, he would have needed to relearn with the techniques and supplies available at that time.
Also, a lot of young men don't have their father's around, either due to death or more commonly divorce. This is especially the case in some communities where not having a father around is the norm.
@@bev8200 A trick I learned from my wife, is that if you put some petroleum jelly over the top of nicks, it will stop the bleeding in a way that leaves the smallest scab. You're skin may be dark enough to not notice, on mine you barely notice.
Great suggestions and super research. Just FYI, I've found shaving in the shower to be perfect. My preference is using a brush and shaving soap, but even using gel works just fine. Thanks for a great channel (all men should subscribe and take note of the grooming and dressing

Good guide. I also use an electric razor along with my safety razor. It helps me reduce passes in areas of my face with very sharp angles. My primary goal has always been to reduce damage to my sensitive skin and using multiple tools is ideal. This brings me to one important mistake that I think needs to be brought up:
Applying pressure when using a safety razor to shave.
This is easily the single most important change I made, other than switching to a single blade, that saved my skin. Allow the weight of the razor and the sharpness of the blade to do the work. I think we all naturally feel like we need to apply pressure, so it takes a conscious effort not to.

Great video! Experienced razor burn and irritation for years. Got smart and learned a warm washcloth, pre-shave oil, a badger brush, and a good shaving soap are essential. I transitioned to a Merkur 39 and Feather blades after the Gillette fiasco. My skin condition improved and I (and my wife) are happier. More up front expense but I think it was worth it.

It's funny you seem to have had the same shaving journey as me (down to the nivia foam). The video has given me the confidence to know that what I'm doing is on the right track though.
Excellent advice. I used Gillette mach razors for years, but eventually the razor burn and costs led me to dollar shave club.... Which I discovered have the bluntest blades in all of Christendom! So back to square one.
Then I tried a Wilkinson DE.
Best decision I've ever made and I'll never look back. Combine a DE razor with Proraso shave cream and that's your shave solution right there.
It's a different world from cartridge razors. And a far better one.

This was a great video. I learned a lot of new stuff from it, and it made some things make sense for me. Definitely going to check out the full article when I get the chance.
Personally I shave for maintenance. My facial hair doesn't grow that fast, so I usually do a close shave with shaving cream and a cartridge razor once a week, and touch up with an electric razor every couple of days. Also my wife likes the scruff and my job doesn't really care how I wear my facial hair.
I will probably be changing up some things based on this though. Risks for all of the info
I fell in love with a disposable blade straight razor, gives the best of both worlds, sliced my face up something wicked when I first started, but now it gives me a lovely smooth shave, and a blade cost that is barely even worth counting
Two things I found that are an absolute necessity are a Styptic pencil and alum block. The pencil stops bleeding from any cuts. The alum block closes all those open pores when you are all done. I even keep a Styptic pencil in my first aid kits. They come in a thin or thick type so I have one of each.
Also my number one tip is this:
Do not buy your shaving supplies at Walmart lol.
Everyone seems to forget or doesn't know about the absolute first to do before all shaving:
Wash your face first with soap and rinse. Doing so will not only clean the skin, but also degrease the beard. After that step, use a shaving soap and the blade will glide nicely over the face and at the same time get a very good grip on the beard and cut it clean off.
