- Monaco is known a lot of the time for boring races… but this particular F1 race may well be the craziest there’s ever been.

The one fact Matt left out of this video is that during the last laps of the race, Olivier Panis's race engineer yelled at him to pit because the calculations showed the amount of fuel he was carrying wasn't enough for him to reach the end of the race.
They kept battling on the radio because the race was about to end and David Coulthard was right behind so pitting Panis would make him lose P1.
Eager to win his first (and only) Grand Prix, Panis screamed back at his team on the radio:
"If I pit now, we'll look like idiots throwing away a win.
If I stay out and the car run out of fuel, so be it. I take responsibility for this.
If it don't, you get a win. I'm not pitting"
His engineer agreed and started to give him instructions to make the fuel last 'till the end.
Due to the two-hour time limit, the race ended on Lap 75. If it had gone to full distance (78 laps), Panis would have retired for fuel exhaustion because the car wouldn't start again after he turned it off in front of the podium.
Lol Panis legend for that
That fookung legend. Ran on fumes
What an absolute Madlad
also the fact that Panis was the last french driver to win a race until Gasly in 2020.
You remember that well, thanks for refreshing my memory...it was long ago, I completely forgot that detail
This will need to be updated after Sunday when Leclerc managed to finish the gp
I'll come back to this comment, lol
@@TheClx429 i will too.
Same
that would be some crazy ass shit
Leclerc has managed to transfer his curse to Sainz with the sacrifice of the old racing car.
When Panis crossed the line he managed to pick up a tricolore. The amazing thing was it was on a beautiful wooden pole with a brass finial. A French driver in a French car winning in Monaco (almost French) driving to the podium with a giant French flag draped over the engine cover!
I always thought France should conquer Monaco. Not because I dislike Monaco or the people there or anything, but just to see what would happen.
@@BiggieTrismegistus 😂😂😂 sounds like something Napoleon would try
@@piuthemagicman He didn't get the chance. French Revolutionary armies took the who country (which was 20x the size it is now) in 1793, but France had to cede it in 1814
@@decb I jokingly meant that would be slightly Napoleonic behaviour, not that Napoleon should or could've tried it at his time of rule.
@@BiggieTrismegistus there is a treaty if i am not mistaken, whereby france will automatically annex monaco when the grimaldi royal line become extinct.
Crashed on lap 1 yet his helmet still made it to a podium finish - That's some next level skill from Schumacher ;-)
Apparently Ron Dennis used to insist that all race memorabilia come back to Woking, Coulthard wasn't going to give back Schumacher's helmet, so had a replica made and gave that to Dennis instead.
What a crazy race. I wish I could watch the old races on YT or Netflix.
f1 tv archive. 2.29 a month in the uk. Bunch of old races
@@ewanharrison2263 Sadly lot of the older seasons have only a handful of full replays, but it's still well worth the money.
@@DarthJF Yeah, but the 1996 Monaco GP is one of them (and so is 1998 Belgium for another wonderful clustertruck of a race)
I like to imagine a “1997 Monaco Grand Prix Race Highlights” video on CZcams. It would be half hour long
They're was in youtube Although the full race is gone
One of the other crazy things is that they just left some cars out on the track. I mean, we're used to cranes just operating while the race is still going back in the day, but seeing Badoer's car just stand there at the tunnel entrance for the last 8 laps or so is quite the sight to behold, though at least they was a yellow flag waved. The yellow flags right after the hairpin while stewards were salvaging Salo's car on the track is also noteworthy. It's a bit of a miracle that no one got seriously injured that day, but thankfully that makes it a great race to rewatch every once in a while since nothing bad happened. (Edit: If you're watching the race on F1TV, 2:02:40 is the Irvine/Salo/Hakkinen crash)
It was quite usual back then yes... you could calmly retire by pulling to the side and just park on the grass. They would collect the cars after the race was over, no need for SC or VSC.
you can also watch it in the highlights here czcams.com/video/eEs7jS5bsAc/video.html
i was wondering how they dealt with all the safety cars...i guess they just didn't lol
No safety car at Monaco for F1 until 2003
Imagine placing your bets on that outcome. You'd still be able to live of those winnings quite nicely.
That would smell like fixing if anyone bet on anything like that
Apparently someone won $96000 betting the exact podium at monza 2020
@@my_4_brain_cells it was some millions
The rate was 300 to 1 back then, so you have to bet at least a 1000 pounds to retire!
This race was on the same day I was born. My Dad remembered it was on in the hospital waiting room tv. Only when I got into F1 did I ever think to look the race up, and it's a crazy one!
Imagine having this now with the podium as Yuki,Kmag and Albon
Nah looking forward to a stroll latifi, and Tsunoda podium
Johnny Herbert, who scored a podium in Monaco by finishing last in the race.
Yep that's crazy
seeing as you mentioned the Sunday warm up, the fastest driver in that session was.... yep Olivier Panis! They definitely found a sweet spot in the wet conditions with the set up.
1950 Monaco GP also deserves honorable mention. At the start the big wave went on the track in the Tabac corner, Fangio went into the lead but Farina spun, Fagioli hitted him, and more cars crashed into them. On lap 1 we lost 10 drivers. It was first Ferrari race in F1 and also the race where Louis Chiron (from Monaco) was on the podium. Classic GP.
i remember hearing about it on the radio, because we were traveling to our vacation this day and i have never seen the race until i found it on youtube years later. it did not disappoint.
link?
I want the link too please
it was years ago. I don't think it's still up.
Good work! It's really important to show the crazyness of the 90's F1 to this new generation, and the ones who sign up to F1 TV can watch those old crazy races
I'd start with Canada 2011. You don't need to go back to the 90's so see F1 craziness! ;-)
The longest Formula 1 race in history (over 4 hours), the most stops by the winning driver (six), the most safety car deployments (also six), the highest number of overtakes by the winning driver (Button went from the back of the field to first *twice*). Martin Whitmarsh called it the best win in F1 history. It also wouldn't happen today, because they'd stop the race after 2 hours.
Ligier winning a race wasn't THAT unheard of. They actually won quite a few races during the first turbo era of the late 70s-early 80s, and were championship runners-up in 1980, but by 1996 they hadn't won a race in 15 years. That was also their last season in F1 before they went bankrupt, got bought out, and became Prost.
The thing about Luca Badoer, the incident that ended his race, he was roughly 5 laps down when he collided with Jacques Villeneuve. Villeneuve came to a halt at Lowes Hairpin with damaged suspension as a result of Badoer squeezing him into the wall at Mirabeau and Badoer stopped his car at the entrance of the tunnel, with damage to the suspension of his Forti
Absolute bonkers. If that happened today it would be chaos in the racing direction room. And yes, back in those times the stewards were quite more lenient... the opposite of the over-zealoussness we sometimes see nowadays.
The 96 season is amazing. It had Schumacher's first Ferrari win in a crazy weather changing Spain GP.
"Retire to secure position" - not often gonna hear that
I remember this race, I was very young, I cried when Schumacher went out😭😭😭
I love Monaco. It creates some great nail biting action. Great video once again guys.
🧢
this is the perfect example of "to finish first, first you have to finish"
I remember watching it live, it was crazy, like an F1 race no one wanted to win, was gutted for Damon Hill in a way trying to emulate his father Graham, but then again I was shouting fir Jacque Villeneuve for d title. For a team like Ligier it was massive, no way todays Aston Martin, like today's Williams with even less of a budget, French team, French Driver winner and Mugen Honda engine won in F1 which raised interest in Honda returning to F1 a few years later, aka the current Mercedes team. Some guy called Lewis has won a few titles with them.
I love the old "story" about how crew for Rosset changed the name around on his pit bike to read Tosser. 😂🤣 If that's true it is hysterical.
Murray Walker: A lot of people here are debating whether Ricardo Rosset is Formula One material.
Martin Brundle: It would be a very short debate, Murray.
Brundle savage as always 😂
This must’ve been wild to see in real time. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do to make Monaco worth watching 😂
It was insane, trust me.
I feel bad for any potential fan who thinks "I've heard a lot about Formula One but have never seen it. Monaco is the most famous race so I'll check that one out." That person will think F1 is incredibly boring and never watch another race.
Real time? , get a grip kid
@@papayamadness1019 lol you were there? Hey “Pops”, what was it like in Monaco in 96?
@@BiggieTrismegistus I’ve gotten to see the last 3 Monaco GP’s live, and it’s hard to see how these bigger cars are ever going to be fun to watch at that track. Yeah tradition, blah blah blah. The fact is that there’s a shat ton of money for F1 there so they can’t help but come back. Doesn’t mean it’s fun to watch lol idk how this is so hard to understand.
Schumi's helmet on square head David ruined the natural balance of F1, causing all the retirements, but also gave him a podium.
Driver: **lines up on the grid**
Team radio: "welcome to battle royal, the match is about to start."
Speaking of the warm-up session, MotoGP still has a warm-up session on race day
That's the only way Latifi would get a podium
Wrong, Latifi would have crash, you need some skill to drive in the rain withour crashing
@@alexp2327 sad but true🤣
Petition to have a race rundown from this race!
i think spa 2021 was the craziest race ever. like there's just so much happening it was just chaos
It's one of my favorite races to re-watch every few years or so.
Monaco 1996 was the first ever F1 GP I watched. I was 4 years old! If only F1 was always this exciting.
1984 was crazy too, with a controversy at the end being the cherry on top.
My favourite race of all time! It's also incidentally the race that got me hooked up on F1. It's the oldest F1 race that I still have memories about watching it; was 7 years old at the time. Amazing race, always a pleasure to re-watch it!
Great video Matt👍
It's almost Laughable having a race where only 3 cars finish
Well, at least enough room for the podium.
Yo I think you should make a random facts in every vid at the start coz there always good crack
Canada 2011 would be my pick:
Having a safety car is fun. Having two or three is noteworthy. The safety cars was deployed six times during this race. Speaking of six, the race winner (Jenson Button) made six pit stops, and finished after 4 hours and 4 minutes - making this the longest race in formula 1 history.
A liger wining a race like monaco is pretty amazing. And beating Coulthard in basically a 1v1 situation at the end is a definite feather to stick in your visor.
Just sounds like every single online lobby in the F1 game
1996. The best Monaco Grand Prix of all time. Apart from 1982, 1984, 1992, 1970 and 1997.
Now this race sounds like a drive to survive
..
Out of no where this guys videos have made me an F1 fan. The content is just so damn good
I remember this race! It’s the first F1 match I watched on TV when I was 11! This is the only time I saw Panis standing on top 3, never before never after. The rain splash was so thick to the point the camera couldn’t pick up any good shot amidst the water mist! The voice on TV said, people who bought hotel rooms along the race track should ask for refund, because they wouldn’t be able to see anything.
Panis was actually a decent, talented driver. Was almost signed for McLaren and before he broke his legs in Canada 97, he had 2 more podiums and was set to sign for McLaren as his performances were amazing in 97.
Craziest race I ever watched was that one when Massa was a champion for thirty seconds before "wait, is that Glock?" moment...I mean, sure, 3 cars finishing race is crazy, but have you ever experienced feeling of who is a champion change in half a minute or so? That's crazy af...I can list few other crazy races, but that emotional rollercoaster was just craziest thing ever...
Bear in mind that it is also true that panis made some intelligent moves passing other cars and that the guys that were in front failed about strategy. Left alone that leaves no doubt he had some skill advantage and merit cause he also drove in the rain with a Middle field competitive car till the very end and without being challenged almost at all.
This is the real life equivalent of a F1 2021 Open Lobby race
Not really, no one was dirty, they just made mistakes weren't malicious
@@wellanyway4 You have a point... But the retirement count's about the same :D
Monaco 1996 was the first ever GP i watched! Olivier Panis never forgotten!
To warm up for this weekend, I watched 91-96 Monaco GPs and Spot On! That was the craziest race that I've ever seen 🤯
Ahhh, the memories 😉 I was 12 years old back then, and this was my 3rd season of watching F1. So long ago, and I can still remember Irvine/Salo/Hakkinen crash like it happened yesterday. It's one of these pictures, that just burn into your brain to stay there forever 😀
With the new cars and possible rain on Sunday, I expect a crazy race
My bet for the podium is:
1. Bottas
2. Zhou
3. Albon
For anyone curious, the thumbnail is from the Formula 1 Indoor Trophy at the 1996 Bologna Motor Show.
Saw it on tv live, loved it.
That was one crazy race
I watched this when it was live and still feel that all the points should be handed out even if cars don't finish, which would still have effects now with the top ten awarded points.
Now this deserves a retro race watch!
1982 Monaco GP was a chaotic race with petrol stops in the legendary turbo era.
Wtf1 back with the action!!
Every year that amazing story. Never gets old. 😊🤩
Had to look this one up on F1 TV thanks to this video lol
The 1998 Spa GP was fairly nuts for the just after first turn accident and then Schumacher going out by hitting DC, and Hill talking on the radio to Eddie Jordan telling Ralf needs to stay behind or they throw away a 1-2.
That old Martin Brundle picture made my day
Uhh Schumacher driving that Red Potato 🏎 🥔 putting it on P1 that was some qualifying very entertaining. And then my favourite driver crashing out on lap 1 sad 😞
F1 fan for 45 years and I still love Monaco
"The king of the grid walk Martin Brundle" lmaoooo Miami GP will always be a great grid walk memory
Missed opportunity for a race rundown in this video
Last time I saw 2/3 of the field retire in Monaco was in the F1 2017 game. The last f1 game I played ever since.
This wasn't a race, but a battle royale
Remember this race. What a weekend it was 🤣
This sort of chaos was pretty common back in the day lol
You forget to say the Mugen Honda engine in Oliver Panis’s Ligier almost broke before the race ends! Frentzen did retired, but still got the points for 4th place. It was a Monaco Grand Prix to remember 👍
When you play online on f1 2021
The only crazier f1 race that I remember involved a 🔧named Michael Masi 😭🤣
Talk about drive to survive, LOL.
The 1982 race was a crazy one as well!
This Race just gone was amazing! So unpredictable and Leclerc finally finished his home GP
Saw the race live on TV when I used to be the weird kid who stayed home watching the races, and now everyone does thanks to Netflix.
Singapore of 2017 was a very crazy race, monza of 2018,imola of 2021,mugello of 2020,spain of 2022,hungary if 2021, Italy of 2021
i like how the video is up for 3 minutes and people are commenting great video
"Ligier isn't a team unheard of." -Murray Walker
1998 Belgium GP is another crazy one that should be mentioned
IMO I think that this Monaco GP is going to be almost, if not more crazy than this one. The chance of rain is high and with Latifi on the grid, and these heavier, longer, and harder to control cars there’s a greater chance of crashes at Monaco than ever before.
This is the moment when i go to the archive in F1TV
2:23 I’ve never seen that livery. It looks really good.
I love wtf1 his information is perfect on point that’s why I love you Matt not in a weird way and you are really cool and good!
I have a race but I wouldn’t say it’s crazier, but it was the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix where it was so wet that they didn’t do the whole race, and I think a few drivers retired as well.
0:45 david looks like a dame vampire
I knew Schumacher crashing on lap 1 a day after he took pole by 0.5 seconds on the shortest lap on the calendar, that it was going to be a crazy race. Still gutted though for Damon and Alesi.
"22 cars in 1996 in the Monaco GP, what could go wrong?"
Everything, literally everything
Someone must have made a killing at the bookies owing to the fact that the betting odds of Panis winning that race was 300-1. 😂
haha yeah, remember the race where Leclerc didn't finish? That was a wild one!
Christ I am old. I remember watching this race. And too cried whrn the legend retired
idk man, i feel like the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was kinda crazy but im not sure, it was such a long time ago xD
Spa 2021 was insane
1996 gp yeah I watched the highlights yesterday, what a coincidence
The only time a F1 race became a BR and kudos for Irvine by going for the double, at the cost of his car too
Another fact for Jean Alesi, he turned down the Williams contract for Ferrari, and Williams went wild in 1992 then Alesi and his Ferrari keeps struggling.
Villeneuve was out of the race with Badoer, for Villeneuve that was 66s lap, but for Badoer only 60st lap.
Adelaide 1995 was pretty crazy
