Awesome video, like all the rest. We are blessed to have you in our generation John. Firm handshakes.
WONDERFUL video John! Just what I’ve been asking (you) about. I can’t wait to get back out to Montauk to give my larger bucktails a try. Always a pleasure sharing in your success and learning from such.
I haven’t been out there in years, but watching this was fun! I really liked how that one fluke hydroplaned across the surface when you let him go! Thanks for your videos, John. I’m seeing how a lot of what I used to do was just wasting time and I can’t wait to get out again and use some of your techniques.
Good job john! Love the educational videos. I learn so much from watching your videos. Thank you
Another great video John. I liked when your buddy said "doc would have a fit" haha.
John awesome flukes, keep the videos coming
My favorite Fluke was the very last one, it nearly took off like a plane lol. Good video
yea Ill give this a like before I watch
Good job on your Viking trip vid. Was surprised as you to hear the mate say "we don't use those much here" when you asked for Gulp.
Sea-Money Fishing I see your everywhere even in the comments...
Hey look its Sea-Money Fishing ik tht guy
Great video as always. I've been on trips where bluefish strips saved the day and put a couple keepers in the boat when nothing else worked. And sometimes they haven't worked at all. Definitely a good option to have, though.
Thanks John for all the great info. I catch lots of fluke, never get skunked. The only problem is that, I catch a lot of shorts. Maybe it’s the spots I fish at. I don’t have many spots to fish at in Oceanside and the few spots I know are full of shorties. I used a dropshot with a 4inch gulp alive minnow. Maybe I’m targeting them at the wrong time of the year. So far this season I had only 2 keepers out of dozens of fluke. Thanks again and tight lines!.
Love fluke and flounder fishing
I'm done fishing! John proves every day the big fluke are down there. I follow his tips but I just can't get them.
George Collier keep going out. 1000 drifts catch more fish Tha 100. And so on. Keep getting out there.
You sound a bit like Howard Stern. Love the videos and the narratives. I've learned a lot by watching.
Hi John,
I'm fishing boston Harbor this weekend, any advice? There is a rocky shoreline that drops off quick and there's also a beach but it doesn't get much waves.
So great seeing your videos Sir
GREAT video!!! Dogfish strips can work nicely as well!
the mold cookies made me so happy
Ok thanks John your a FISH GOD as my friends calls you lol your awesome buddy I enjoy your Channel.
Nice video fishing 👍
Good video thanks for the advice
I see the hybrid maxwell my favorite summer reel.
Hahah... that was funny (with the net)... + Moldy CooKiez?
Nice video as usual thanks for sharing. I thought with 6oz bucktails u would go with heavier line then #15 but i guess u kept the thiner line because of the heavy current to help keeping it down
Exactly. 15# is a little light for that rod, but the thinner the line the less weight you'll need to stay down with.
I need that shirt your buddy is wearing
I always like his videos before watching... Lol.. Beautiful 8.4lbs flattie....
Very nice video!
Hey. Great video. Can you say more about how you modified the Tsunami 7" H rod? You cut 4" from the tip? How do you do this? Do you do anything to change the position of the other guide under the tip guide? A video on modifying rods in this way would be great.

Interesting hearing the rec tuna guys on the cb.
I'll be fishing from piers & jetty's
What is a well made net that has reach & is collapsable?
Keep the videos going
Nice vid. Any 2 piece med heavy rods you recommend? Looking for 2 piece
John, I watch a lot of your videos and I would recommend you and Doc replace your nets with the EGO S2 nets. Not inexpensive, but hooks cant get caught in them and your frustration level will go way down LOL
This moment came after John's special cookies lol
Awesome job guys.....but even Lloyd Braun would NOT have eaten the mold cookies :)
Those cookies were perfect, crunchy and all. The bag was scary wet and moldy. Just another part of the laughs!
And those cookies brought Sweeney to life. Once the mold toxins kicked in, he had the next 5 keepers.
John Halkias I've noticed you can eat about anything when you're out fishing.
Come to toano VA soon and take me fishing
No crap John, you put the net down and walked away🤷♂️
Ill try this!
Thanks for posting! I sent you an email about this very topic!
John, in NJ I've seen its very typical during heavy current to cast up current, then work the bait back to the boat. Then when you're under the boat, you recast. This way you can use a lighter bucktail. Have you ever tried this with any success? A lot of ppl swear by it, but I've never tried.
Have not tried it, but one downside of doing that over deep water is you would lose a lot of fishing time going up and down so often.
John Skinner Fishing good point. I know a lot of ppl that swear it catches more fish. But like you said, in deep water you lose a lot of fishing time going up and down constantly.
John Skinner Fishing John, just wanted to give you an update. Yesterday I tried the casting method that I was explaining to you. I was out with two other guys who were vertical jigging while I was casting. I caught 8 keepers, they caught 1 combined. We were in 75 feet of water, and I was holding with a 3 oz jig no problem, and they were struggling to hold with 6oz. Give it a try with a spinning rod next time the drift is too fast.
Engineer that could have been slack current the reason why you were holding with 3oz. Or the wind was light with current on that day. I pick my party boat trips according to tide, moon and winds so it works in my favor for me in NJ. Sometimes guys doing the cast upcurrent works well but other times it’s more tangles than anything else. Congrats on your success. I only use that method during slack tide.
I'm about to buy a Classic H on your recommendation. Could you tell us again how you cut the rod tip & what you did about replacing the tip, so I don't have to search through all your videos? Should I just buy a Classic XH?
Thank you again for the great videos & all the information.
Here's the cutting video. Any decent tackle shop will replace the tip for $5-$10. Or you can look at "rod tip repair kit" at BPS and then be able to DIY. czcams.com/video/SBLzzFOSCcg/video.html
Thank you John. Have you tried the XH?
Yes. We use that one too. It's quite stiff, but the right rod to bounce 5-8 ounces.
Wonderful, couldn't get this information anywhere else, & thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
Oops, I missed that you're using the XH in this video, don't know how I missed that.
This type of current is typical in NJ. When I'm jigging offshore wrecks for fluke in 65+ feet of water, I use 6oz minimum.
Is that with 15 lb braid like John usually uses?
16:32 that fish was lit up like a Christmas tree.
Hey John, nice fish, do you think this technique would work for halibut?
I've been told by a couple guys in Ca. that it does.
I really like the bald chaps laugh reminds me of olkookaburra😀
Nice work out there🤙🏼 now I know never use blue fish strips wen going for fluke 😎🎣
I don't want to give that impression, but certainly there, in the presence of skates and dogfish, it was a loser.
no of course but wen there's dog fish and skate definitely a no no..
"the fluke wont hit those big bucktails"
the big ones will hahah
Hi John, I fish for Flukes in Martha's Vineyard, I use 3oz bucktail and Gulp Swimming Mullet. I have chance with flukes but sea robins keep hitting the tail of my Gulp Swimming Mullet which make it useless. Do u have any suggestion to avoid sea robins or other bait stealer?

Thanks John, it's just am having problem finding Uncle Josh otter tails to order...
AND! I want that shirt your partner is wearing. I cant find anything like it on google
It's a Guy Harvey and I bought it at Bass Pro Shops on Islamorada, Florida. I also then came across the short sleeve version and bought a few of those as well.
That annoying bird reminded me of a fishing trip in San Diego I think November 1981. Business conference that my buddy and I skipped the morning seminars and went on a party boat. Our rods had Hi-Lo hooks. Don't remember the fish we caught but...after a while dozens of ocean ducks and seagulls must have been very hungry and as we were bringing a fish to the surface a duck would dive and grab the second baited hook. Likewise, as you brought a fish into the boat a seagull would grab the baited other hook. The mayhem caused by these birds as they attempted to fly away with a hook in it's mouth was crazy. Crossed lines and all. Felt sorry for the mates as they tried to unhook the birds. Sadly, a number of the birds did not survive. I think the captain finally gave up and we headed in. Most insane fishing trip I've ever been on and no alcohol was involved.
But it was probably still better than the morning business seminars.
Nice video. How do you like the Maxel hybrid?
12.4 ounces. Phenomenal reel.
ecksdog I
How come fishing sucks in North Carolina coast
What kind of drift sock is that? I would like to purchase one. Thanks!
Chris Xu - here's a link. This is the 84 inch model. Not cheap, but it does the job. www.thehulltruth.com/fishing-miscellaneous-items-commercial-sellers-only/448083-drift-bags-drift-socks-5-sizes-60-14-a.html
Cabelas.com also has some very nice ones, & Cabelas products come with a lifetime guarantee.
If there is a coursing tide and no wind, that drift sock will not help keep over a spot on the bottom. You'll just be dragged along with the tide.
My friend ate those cookies in the boat one time, by the end of the trip he used 3 rolls of toilet paper and used all the fresh water!💩
Thanks for sharing!
ARE you permitted to have fluke strips without the rack? NY might be different but in NJ I think it is a violation.
No. You need the rack.
Where is this ? Thank you
Montauk NY
Dose your book show your location of fishing ? Or is it confidential.
This was Montauk. The book was specific most of the time, but was geared toward the different environments more than spots.
If you can only have one reel...Acurist or the Hybrid
If fluke fishing only - accurist. If also striper and blackfish fishing, maxel hybrid.
also known as a drogue
Come to Florida in winter let's go for doormats
Look it's nmeade
Ever wonder why flounder are so slippery...Google fish slime drag reduction...fluke have one of the best slime for reducing drag ..65% reduction in drag.
I was told by a commercial fisherman yesterday the Feds closed recreational and commercial fluke in NY ????
commercial only
thx
