  • A fluke (summer flounder) fishing contest had us out in rough conditions. The drift sock really saved the day for us as we managed to fight off the fast wind-driven drift and put together a good catch.

    Great video John! That ending reminded me of the skier in the old ABC Saturday morning Wide World of Sports: the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. In our case, we are that Norwegian ski jumper flying off the ski jump!!!

    I was out there this past Monday and got lots of shorts but no keepers. We were all over but the deepest we went was 70 feet. Thanks for replying so quickly.

      Because of the contest this was a 13 hour trip, and I'd say we had maybe 5 shorts the whole day. I don't personally recall catching any. We were 70-90'.

      Also remember light light tackle. 10 to 15lb braid. 2Olb fluorocarbon leaders and gulp to catch fluke and no bycatch with best drift speeds between 0.5mph to 1.5mph with marking fish on there fish on fishfinders and tracking there drifts. If your following there plan just keep fishing and move to different areas to make the odds work in your favor. Shortdrifts not long drifts produce better.

    Gulp jar ? Small wire-clamp lid mason jar, with rubber gasket. Can't lose or damage lid, and no leaky. Just have to remember to clamp lid down when not in use.

    Totally out of topic but can you reintroduce the three way bucktail rig for striped bass, reason why I ask is because when I was on a open boat guys were killing it while everyone else on diamond jigs weren’t catching at all. Of course I asked but didn’t get into detail like u would. Thank you 🙏 btw I loaded up on your bucktails last week and I love them so much what a genious idea!

    I always toss the sock and ways away from the boat and then tug on the line in short jerks until it opens up. There is like a dead spot close to the boat, the sock will just sit there and float along.

    • @johnsweeney1400
      @johnsweeney1400 Před 5 lety

      The wind was a constant 15 and we actually had to lower it to the water to stick or the wind would blow it back on the boat. A real PITA.

    • @sdvten
      @sdvten Před 5 lety

      It is easier to toss the socks that have the weights on the bottom and floats on the top. That kind has some weight to it so the wind doesn't blow it back to you as easy. The ones that are just a nylon bags (basically) make the toss towards the wind much more futile.

    • @johnkeriazesakadoc7271
      @johnkeriazesakadoc7271 Před 5 lety

      Didnt have to do it a lot but if the sock is not extending, you can bump the engine or engines opposite the direction of the sock and it will kick it out and open it.

    Hi John, when jigging, especially where the depth frequently changes throughout the drift , do you occasionally bounce the bucktail on the bottom to recalibrate the strike zone? I thought I heard you allude to that in one of your recent postings. If so, do you have an approximate ratio of jigging time vs touching the bottom for a recal adjustment? Also, I felt terrible when your favorite rod and reel overboard. Whoever designed that rod holder location probably never fished.

    Hey John,
    Rick from NJ here again. Great video! I don't own a boat but do have a few shore spots for fluke. Is it possible you can share what type gear you'd recommend for shore/pier fluke? Single bucktail or with teaser? Do you use various retrieve styles on land depending on the tide/current?
    Thanks.

      Yeah, ive been doing that. Unfortunately my local spots are inundated with poachers and are overcrowded. Things like five guys dead sticking 20 rods is commonplace, keeping everything they catch. Hence why im wondering about the bigger surf right now.

  • @davkimb

    I used mason jars with lockable lids as gulp storage. I choose glass over plastic because I know the glass will not impart an unexpected flavor/scent or cause the gulp liquid to prematurely expire. If you're worried about breakage you can spray them with a coat of truck bed liner. Just take care not to get any on the inside of the jar!!

  • @crispychris9492
    @crispychris9492 Před 5 lety

    How do you stay on / near the bottom in with such light weight? I’m having a problem where I can’t stay down with 4 oz in 20-25 feet of water and when I do stay down the line is so far out. It was calm out and we were drifting around 2 mph. I have 30 lb braid on my rods, which doesn’t seem too heavy.

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks Před 5 lety

      CrispyChris it’s definitely too heavy. Go to 10. Seriously.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  Před 5 lety

      10 or 15# braid. 30# is way too thick and will create too much drag.

    • @johnkeriazesakadoc7271
      @johnkeriazesakadoc7271 Před 5 lety

      The thin or light braid creates less friction thus allowing a lighter weight to reach the bottom much easier. And with lighter line you feel so much more.
