Lyska černá - The Eurasian coot (Fulica atra)
Lyska černá (Fulica atra, syn. Fulica prior) je středně velký plovavý pták.
Popis
Délka těla: 37-42 cm
Rozpětí křídel: 70 cm
Hmotnost: 0,6-1,2 kg
Má robustní tělo celé porostlé lesklým černým peřím.
Odlišné barvy je pouze bílý zašpičatělý zobák a čelní štítek, červené oči a šedé končetiny, na kterých nemá plovací blány, ale pouze kožní lemy.
Mezi pohlavími je slabě vyvinut sexuální dimorfismus.
Samec má o něco větší čelní štítek než samice, zbarvením se od sebe neliší.
Mladí ptáci jsou barvitější, postrádají čelní štítek a mají bíle zbarvenou přední část hrdla.
Čelní štítek bývá navíc o něco větší na jaře než na podzim.
Při plavání lyska kývá hlavou střídavě dopředu a dozadu a před potopením provádí jakousi „šipku“.
Pokud je vyplašena, s cákáním se nejprve rozbíhá po vodě a plácá křídly. To může navodit dojem, že nejde o dobrého letce, ale opak je pravdou a nejčastěji se prokazuje při jejich mnohdy dlouhých migracích.
Hlas
Lyska černá patří mezi poměrně hlučné ptáky s bohatou škálou zvuků. Nejvíce se ozývá při hnízdění nebo vyplašení, přičemž se samice ozývá chraptivým „kev“ a samec ostrým „pix“ nebo „psssi“.
Výskyt
Evropa, Asie, Austrálie, Nový Zéland a části Afriky.
Stojaté vody všeho druhu, v městech ji můžeme spatřit především v zimě, kdy se stěhuje na parková jezírka.
Je částečně tažná.
Část evropské a asijské populace se stěhuje na jih a západ a opouští již zamrzlé vody.
Potrava
Potravu vyhledává především ve vodě a tvoří ji různé druhy vodních rostlin, malí vodní živočichové nebo případě části rostlin rostoucích na břehu.
Život
Během období rozmnožování se u samců projevuje neobvyklá agrese a masivní bránění svého teritoria, které trvá až do konce hnízdění. Ostrůvkovité a kopcovité hnízdo si staví z vodních rostlin, větviček a rákosu a je vždy umístěné v těsné blízkosti s vodou. Mnohdy buduje ještě jedno hnízdo určené k přespání nebo odpočinku dospělých ptáků.
Hnízdí od dubna do května a klade 6 až 15 bíločerných vajec.
Mláďata se líhnou po 22 dnech a jsou krmena oběma rodiči. Při nedostatku potravy se u dospělců objevuje neobvyklá agrese v podobě silného klování, které může dospět až k usmrcení několika mláďat.
Může se dožít i více jak 15 let.

The Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), also known as the common coot, or Australian coot, is a member of the rail and crake bird family, the Rallidae.
Description
Length: 32-42 cm (13-17 in)
Weight: 585-1,100 g (1.290-2.425 lb)
Wingspan: 70 cm (27.55 in)
It is black except for the white frontal shield (which gave rise to the phrase "as bald as a coot").
The coot has partial webbing on its long strong toes.
The juvenile is paler than the adult, has a whitish breast, and lacks the facial shield; the adult black plumage develops when about 3-4 months old and the white shield is fully developed at about one year old.
It is a noisy bird with a wide repertoire of crackling, explosive, or trumpeting calls, often given at night.
Distribution
Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and New Zealand.
It is resident in the milder parts of its range, but migrates further south and west from much of Asia in winter as the waters freeze.
It breeds on freshwater lakes and ponds.
It can be seen walking across waterside grasslands.
Behaviour
It is aggressive and strongly territorial during the breeding season. Both parents are involved in territorial defence.
During the non-breeding season they may form large flocks.
It is reluctant to fly and when taking off runs across the water surface with much splashing. It does the same on land.
It can cover surprisingly large distances.
It bobs its head as it swims, and makes short dives from a little jump.
Feeding
It is an omnivore, and will take a variety of small live prey including the eggs of other water birds, as well as algae, vegetation, seeds and fruit.
It can be grazing on land or in the water. In the water it may upend in the fashion of a mallard or dive in search of food.
Breeding
It builds a nest of dead reeds or grasses, but also pieces of paper or plastic near the water's edge or on underwater obstacles protruding from the water, laying up to 10 eggs, sometimes 2 or 3 times per season.
Usually only a few young survive. They are frequent prey for birds such as herons and gulls.
Coots can be very brutal to their own young under pressure such as the lack of food. They will bite young that are begging for food and repeatedly do this until it stops begging and starves to death. If the begging continues, they may bite them to death.
Coots will also lay their eggs in the nests of other coots when their environment or physical condition limits their ability to breed, or to lengthen their reproductive life.
