Chvostoskok - Springtail (Collembola)
Chvostoskoci tvoří největší ze tří tříd podkmenu šestinohých, které nejsou považovány za hmyz.
Popis
Délka: méně než 6 mm
Kousací ústní ústrojí je uložené uvnitř hlavy a čtyřčlánková tykadla, jejichž všechny články jsou vybaveny vlastní svalovinou.
Oči buďto chybějí (zejména půdní druhy), nebo jsou reprezentovány osmi samostatnými ommatidii.
Hruď je buď srostlá (Symphypleona), nebo článkovaná (Arthropleona).
Zadeček má šest článků. Na prvním z nich se nachází ventrální tubus collophor se dvěma vychlípitelnými váčky, plnící celou řadu funkcí: příjem vody, vylučování, osmoregulaci, dýchání atd.
Většina druhů nemá tracheu.
Na zadečku je skákací aparát, tvořený skákací vidlicí - furcou a záchytkou - retinaculem. V klidovém stavu je furca držena retinaculem, po jeho uvolnění se vymrští a katapultuje živočicha.
U půdních chvostoskoků skákací aparát často chybí.
Chodidlo splynulo s holení v tibiotarsus.
Výskyt
Kosmopolitní živočichové odolní vůči výkyvům podmínek prostředí.
Půda, humus, opad, na povrchu půdy, na vodní hladině, firnová pole, okraje ledovců.
Pro jejich život je důležitá vlhkost.
Většina je malá a obtížně viditelná, ale takzvanou "sněžnou blechu" (Hypogastrura nivicola) lze snadno pozorovat v teplých zimních dnech, kdy její tmavá barva ostře kontrastuje s bílým pozadím.
Potrava
Většina se živí saprofágně - rozloženým opadem, řasami, houbami, detritem nebo pylem. Někteří jsou predátoři a živí se půdními živočichy. Někteří mohou být považováni za škůdce stopkovýtrusných hub.
Rozmnožování
Oplození je vnější, samice sbírá spermatofor vybavený stopkou. U některých druhů se vyskytuje epigamické chování (samec a samice se během námluv vzájemně zaklesávají tykadly apod.).
Larvy absolvují 4 až 5 svlékání a jsou podobné dospělcům (vývoj nedokonalý), ale i dospělí jedinci se svlékají po celý život (až 50x). Známy jsou i partenogenetické druhy.
Význam
Důležití půdotvorní činitelé.
V málo narušených půdách se vyskytuje až 200 000 jedinců na metr čtvereční. Ovlivňují společenstva půdních mikroorganismů, zejména hub, a to nejen jejich konzumací, ale i roznášením spor.
Udržují diverzitu hub v půdě.
Jsou jedním z nejužívanějších organismů v půdní ekotoxikologii (studium působení škodlivých látek na ekosystém).
V akvaristice a teraristice jsou využíváni jako krmivo.

Springtails (Collembola) form the largest of the three lineages of modern hexapods that are no longer considered insects (the other are the Protura and Diplura).
Morphology
Length: less than 6 mm (0.24 in)
They have six or fewer abdominal segments, and possess a tubular appendage with reversible, sticky vesicles, projecting ventrally from the first abdominal segment.
It is believed to be associated with fluid uptake and balance, excretion, and orientation of the organism itself.
Most species have an abdominal, tail-like appendage known as a furcula. It is located on the fourth abdominal segment of collembolans and is folded beneath the body, held under tension by a small structure called the retinaculum. When released, it snaps against the substrate, flinging the springtail into the air and allowing for rapid evasion and migration (in as little as 18 milliseconds).
They are attested to since the Early Devonian. The fossil from 400 million years ago, Rhyniella praecursor, is the oldest terrestrial arthropod.
Distribution
They are frequently found in leaf litter and other decaying material, where they are primarily detritivores and microbivores, and one of the main biological agents responsible for the control and the dissemination of soil microorganisms.
They are reputed to be one of the most abundant of all macroscopic animals, with estimates of 100,000 individuals per square meter of ground, essentially everywhere on Earth where soil and related habitats (moss cushions, fallen wood, grass tufts, ant and termite nests) occur.
Most are small and difficult to see by casual observation, but the so-called snow flea (Hypogastrura nivicola), is readily observed on warm winter days when it is active and its dark color contrasts sharply with a background of snow.
Food
They consume fungal hyphae and spores, but also have been found to consume plant material and pollen, animal remains, colloidal materials, minerals and bacteria.
Reproduction
Sexual reproduction occurs through the clustered or scattered deposition of spermatophores by male adults. Stimulation of spermatophore deposition by female pheromones has been demonstrated in Sinella curviseta. Mating behavior can be observed in Symphypleona.
Relationship with humans
They are useful bio-indicators of soil quality.
