    I cultivated springtails in my hermit crabs' beach 75gal tank. Watching them break down a slice of cucumber over a few days is very relaxing.

      I got mine from etsy for really cheap. Also there are usually a couple listing on your local Craigslist and FB Marketplace. Also if you call a local reptile shop or breeder (not a petco or petsmart) and ask them if they sell any and if they don't, could you bring a container and get a starter colony for a couple bucks. They'll probably say yes.

      Joshes Frogs is a great spot online, but u can find them in nature in high humidity areas like under fallen trees and other pieces of wood and stone

    I like to grow weed. I keep 4-6 plants in my bedroom in a horticulture tent. My first experience with springtails was coming home and seeing black symbiote fluid floating on top of all the stillwater underneath my plants 😳😭 I was freaking out. Gassed my entire room with Neem Oil. Now I've been learning a lot more about them and keeping them in my terrariums where I keep my praying mantises :)

      @@leafystreet you're not kidding. Now also my kids have hundreds of little beastie pets as well! Lol. We've got loads of different isopods as well as the usual clean up crew. And our snakes and lizards LOVE all the secret hidey holes and plants. Plus they're so beautiful for us to look at! They're all eating so much better in them too. Defo worth the money and hassle once it's all set up you literally just spot clean, water and it takes care of itself.

    I Just use charcoal.
    It looks cleaner and i can see if it is starting to rot and smell if had to much food.
    I prefer just using that:)

    Or, if you’re lucky, they’ll already be in some moss growing on the side of your house, so all you have to do is hope and pray that the random baby centipedes that were also in the moss don’t prey on them into glass jar extinction.
    Kind of like meal prep but with these little bugs you weren’t expecting at first and gave you a heart attack thinking they’d kill ur moss, and will higher stakes.

      thank you so much. So ive been keeping animals for most of my life BUT i took a huge break. From ages 8-14 or so its all i thought about. In highschool, I took a break, adopting most everything out. Fast forward to living on my own, and I now have the money to get back into everything and here we are

      @@amandaxsky Partly yea, and somewhat a shift in interests and focus. I went through a phase where i thought i was going to be a pro skateboarder lol (super delusional). It's all I did and thought about. During that era I was fishing and flipping rocks but keeping tons of animals just wasn't on the schedule but I've found my way home

    Serious question: Can I dump a few of these little springtail buddies into all my house plants? (I've gotta around 70 plants). You see, I've had huge fungi/ mold problem for _decades._ Will these guys survive me watering my plants once or twice a week? Thanks!

    Uhh I have orchids in the house I watered them the other day and noticed little tiny bugs but notoke gnats they were like microscopic almost. Are they springtailike animals? My orchids they're in are doing wonderful and have tons of new roots and leaves so what are they?

      Ill wild collect them for terrariums but not for anything thats going to live with reptiles. I dont wanna risk scooping up a parasite of some kind

      Springtails are GOOD. They are part of the decomposition cycle. they eat mold and other decomposing material

      I use them in my bioactive reptile setups or in my terrariums. they are a part of the decomposition cycle and assist in the "bioactive" process by eating mold and other decomposing material, including poo

      They eat mold and other decaying matter as part of the decomposition cycle. I use them inside of the my "bioactive" reptile enclosures and terrariums to simulate an ecosystem
