Světluška větší (Lampyris noctiluca) lidově svatojánská muška je druh brouka z čeledi světluškovitých.
Známá je hlavně svou schopností vyzařovat zelené světlo.
Popis
Samec
- délka: 10 - 12 mm
Tělo ploché.
Chitinový plášť těla zbarvený do hněda, na okrajích do žluta.
Na dlouhých krovkách jsou podlouhlé rýhy pokryté chloupky.
Hlava schovaná pod tělním pláštěm a na ní nitkovitá tykadla.
Na sedmém kroužku na břiše je světelná skvrna.Mohou létat.
Samice
- délka: 15 - 20 mm
Nemají krovky.
Hlava schovaná pod chitinovým tělním pláštěm.
Více světelných orgánů než samci.
Světelná políčka na šestém a sedmém článku trupu a na osmém jsou dodatečné světelné skvrny.
Larva
Podobá se samici. Černá zadní část těla.
Výskyt
Od Portugalska a Velké Británie přes Evropu a Asii do Číny.
Až do oblasti severního polárního kruhu.
Otevřené prostranství, louky a okraje lesů.
V ČR se vyskytuje málo.
Nejaktivnější během suchého léta v období od června do července. Zhruba od 22:00 do 22:30 hodin.
Tvorba světla
Svítí díky bioluminiscenci. Následek chemických reakcí v živých buňkách a tkáních (chemiluminiscence). Luciferin se odbourává enzymem luciferázou, energie při tom uvolněná je vyzářena ve formě světla.
90-98 % vložené energie je přeměněno na světlo (skoro žádné teplo). Mnohem efektivnější než nejúspornější žárovky.
Světlo může vlastní vůlí spustit nebo zhasnout, pomocí regulace přívodu kyslíku do světelných orgánů.
Život
Po setmění samičky vylézají z úkrytu, usadí se na trávě a svítí, aby ukázaly připravenost k páření.
Samečci svítí slaběji a létají do pár metrů nad zemí. Samičku zahlédnou až na 50 metrů.
Jednotlivé druhy se poznají podle doby svícení a mezer mezi záblesky.
Brzy po spáření páry svítit přestanou a do několika dnů uhynou.
Na vlhké místo samička naklade během 3 dnů 50 až 150 světle žlutých vajíček (cca 1 mm). Ta mohou několik dní slabě žlutě svítit.
Larva se líhne asi za 2 až 3 týdny. Během 2 až 3 roky trvajícího vývoje se asi 5x svléká (až 5 stádií).
Larva je aktivní v noci a hlavně ve vlhkých podmínkách. Zimu přečkává v úkrytu.
Cyklus se opakuje 1 až 2 roky.
Mezi květnem až srpnem stane dospělým broukem.
Larvy mohou slabě svítit, aby zastrašily nepřítele.
Potrava
Živí se slimáky a hlemýždi. Vstřikuje do nich neurotoxin, který je znehybní a rozloží jeho vnitřnosti na řídkou hmotu a larva ji vysaje.
Kořist někdy přežije a po chvíli se odebere pryč.
Dospělí brouci obvykle potravu nepřijímají.

Lampyris noctiluca, the common glow-worm of Europe, is the type species of beetle in the genus Lampyris and the family Lampyridae.
Description
Male
- length: 10 - 12 mm (0.39 - 0.47 inch)
Has wings, with brown elytra, a clearer pronotum and a large brown spot in the middle.
Female
- length: 15 - 25 mm (0.59 - 1 inch).
Wings are missing and they are often twice the size of the males. Completely black back.
Larvae
Similar to adult females, but have bright spots on each of 12 segments.
Distribution
From Portugal and Ireland across Europe, Africa and Asia to China.
It also survives further north than any other firefly, almost reaching the Arctic Circle.
Old-growth grassland, chalk and limestone soils, verges, hedgebanks and heaths.
The larvae live in sheltered places - under rocks and wood, but do crawl over different terrains.
Light production
They can regulate its light production by controlling the oxygen supply to the light emitting membranes.
The chemical reaction producing the light from luciferin is catalysed by luciferase.
Different species have differences in the light produced.
Virtually all of the energy produced is light; only 2% is heat.
Life
Females emit yellowish-green light from the underside of their last three abdominal segments to attract males.
They will glow for 2 hours and then retreat back into their hiding place until the next night.
The light can be seen by males up to 50 yards away.
Once the females have attracted the males, they mate, lay eggs, and both of them die.
50-150 eggs are laid over 3 days in fairly moist places, e.g. stem of grass or under moss.
The eggs are pale yellow (1 mm across). They may glow faintly yellow and take between 27 and 45 days to hatch.
The larvae feed for 2 or 3 years on slugs and snails which they inject with a toxic, digestive fluid.
The prey is paralysed and the digestive fluid turns part of it into a brown broth that the larva can lap up. The prey remains alive, and sometimes may crawl away after.
The larvae moult 4 to 5 times.
They spend their winters hidden and wake up in spring, and the cycle is repeated for one or 2 years.
They become adults from May to July.
Larvae sometimes glow to deter predators.
