Came because it's Dabney. Stayed for the TREE LAW!!!
First story, cutting down tall trees on a city hillside (or lots of trees of any height if they're on a hill) isn't just illegal for bureaucratic reasons. It's a massive safety concern for anyone else building on or near that hill. Trees keep the dirt and rock underneath from eroding with rain and weather. Cutting them down without approval from land management professionals can lead to losing everything on the whole hillside (above and below) within the next few years, AND send rockslides or mudslides down onto anything built in the valley. The destruction absolutely wouldn't stop at the clueless dude's property line.
Man I love tree law. Call me the Lorax, cause I hate people who cut down trees for no reason.
Treelaw is incredible! It's like The Lorax got to Law school and lobbied to immensely increase the penalties for cutting down trees.
I came here to say this! Treelaw is amazing!
Treeeee laaaww!!!😂😂
Well, it was his trees, so this is an example of tree law being the bad guy.
@@hubertnnn
Technically, it wasn't the guys' right to cut down the big trees that had been there longer than the stupid human.
Had that neighbor cut down the smaller trees, there wouldn't have been tree law.
Story 3: If somebody is not only advising against your plan, but actually calling in witnesses and taking photos, maybe it's time to take the hint.
The audio video variation of "Can I get that in writing?"
Nah, some people are not meant to be reasoned with.
@@krzysztof_jablonski "Arguing with those who have foregone the use of Reason is like administering medicine to the dead." -Thomas Jefferson
Also saying that they can't be responsible if your idea doesn't work.
Also, what makes you think that you know better than the people who have worked with it for YEARS.
Story 3: Seriously, using COAXIAL CABLE to tie something down? Is this your first time tying an item down? This dude really expected thin copper to hold a superheavy object.
Well, nothing he can do except buy a second fridge
And pay the fine for littering.
It’s not even that: it’s too round, there’s no give to it to form a proper sturdy knot, and it’s too smooth so friction wouldn’t hold it together either. The chord didnt break, the knot just unraveled instantly bc of the fridges weight.
Trying to secure a heavy load with cable is is about as smart and well-thought-out as bungyjumping with plain rope
@@Josh_the_jesterSo Henry Stickmin in -Escaping- _Fleeing_ the Complex. Ya I can see it.
I thought that a fridge would get messed up if it was not upright, you can't lay it on it's side.
When an employee calls in another employee to take photos, and they ask you to sign a paper, its the exact same energy as "Can I get that in writing?" And means you should absolutely stop what you're doing because it's a certified bozo moment!
It's right up there with a DM (Dungeon Master) asking "Are you sure you want to do that?"
How much would Sears be willing to replace back in the day? Oh boy do I have a story. This is from over 40 years ago. My dad, a young SSgt (USAF) worked with an officer who was generally pretty handy, but would sometimes do really dumb things. Well, he forgot to flip the breakers on an outlet and the somehow fused a Craftsman flathead screwdriver into the outlet.
Embarrassed, but needing a screwdriver, and remembering that Craftsman claimed they would replace any damaged tool, he went to Sears. He walked into the tool department and explained to the guy what happened and showed him the screwdriver with the outlet melted onto it. The employee just took the melted mass and said, in awe, to get a new one.
The next time he went in, the ruined tool was mounted under the Craftsman guarantee with an additional sign saying, "Yes, any damaged tool."

Customer: “Coaxial cable is stronger than twine!”
**Fridge flies off truck**
Also Customer: “How dare, YOU.”
Dude played himself lol
And probably to stupid to realize
Isn't nylon twine another name for para cord?
@@marjoriejohnston4905 no. Paracord is a specific type of nylon twine, but not every type of nylon twine is paracord.
Coax *is* stronger than most twine, it is also entirely unsuited to the task of tying anything down and keeping it secure.
Story 2: I don't know what Big Bollocks was expecting demoting OP. Why not just offer higher wages, the company would have more employees then
His drink budget
Even just... _not_ demoting him. Like, "Hey buddy, do this million pound order for me, I'll try and find someone to cover for your normal job." If he asks for a raise, say "I'll think about it." Which means "No." of course, but who in their right mind _demotes_ someone when they need them to pull their butts out of a fire?
Then where would he get the money to get beer?
As someone who lives in an HOA, this is the first time I heard of a decent HOA story. I know most are assholes, but some are just normal so yeah. I don’t live in the US so maybe the HOA system is different
It's usually shit here, too. Rich people hoa are usually slightly better bc the homeowners can sue the hoa for petty things. Rich people have more time to go through the bylaws, regular city laws, etc. With a lawyer.
The only HOA I’ve ever had to deal with is the one where I live now and it’s fairly decent.
But I think part of that is because it’s a small-ish neighborhood that is fairly close-knit.
Also, my neighborhood is townhouses (I don’t know what they’re called elsewhere, but they’re houses that are connected in rows, don’t have backyards and have very very small front yards.) and since we don’t do our own yard work or maintain the outside of the houses, it works better with an HOA to pay the maintenance team, organize painting schedules, spring planting, roof repairs, etc.
But my parents have definitely lived in places where the HOA was a nightmare and the neighborhood would have been better off without it.
In my current city, HOAs are fairly uncommon because people distrust them so much. I’m the only person I know here that lives under an HOA.
But in some cities it’s difficult to find a house that isn’t covered by an HOA.
The problem is that even a good HOA is one election away from being some Karen's power trip.
Good HOA's exist, it's just, you're not likely to hear any stories about good HOAs. Just like you're not likely to hear stories about good cops, teachers, bosses, etc., but they do exist, and in some cases are actually the majority, while the ones you hear about are the minority.
Is it technically an HOA when you own 1 apartment in a building and need a representing association with the people who own the rest of the building (15 apartments total, some people own two) to coordinate things affecting the whole building?
Whooo good ol tree law!
_"Why didn't you warn meeee?"_
"You said to mind my own businessssssss."
Finally, a tree law story! 🤩
Tree Law coming back with a vengeance always makes my heart happy.
Oh hell yeah tree law is back 🎉🎉
Coax cable dude could have severely hurt someone. As fun as it was that this guy got what was coming to him, he endangered those around him on the freeway. And then he left pieces of refrigerator on the freeway to go back and complain. He deserves to be changed with endangering something at the very least
"Unsecured load" is a ticket-able offense, if that helps.
That fridge story… is it a scam? Did he really lose the fridge, or did he just claim he lost it in order to get a new, free fridge?
Coaxial cable is not meant to hold things in place. It's thin copper wire wrapped in insulation, and anyone who uses it like it's actual rope is dumb. It's much more likely he lost the fridge than he is trying to scam a store.
"It's always your prerogative to throw away even more or your money" is definitely a line to remember for that kind of interaction
The final story, involving the pressure washer in the bathroom, they missed the ultimate stroke of malicious compliance... "Im sorry, I've not been properly trained on the proper procedure for cleaning the bathrooms, so I cleaned them according to the machinery I have been trained to maintain..."
What gets me about the first story is that you would think that the company would double check that the Neighbor had all the paperwork and permission before moving forward with their work on the property. After all couldn't they also get fined from the city or at the very least obtain a negative reputation?
There are tons of companies operating on the same premise. Which want to be known for treating the customer like a king, not respecting the law.
Because that's what these customers want and pay for.
And the companies do get paid no matter what, often even double or thrive for building, removing and rebuilding the same thing again.
Given the choice between rock climbing with a coax cable or a 9 braid thread rope, I’d take the rope, thanks!😂
I honestly never understood tree law until Reddit
I never even heard of tree law until RSlash!
The general rule of thumb is that when you’re doing rock retaining walls, it has to be above 4 feet high before an engineer gets involved. Which means that you can put up a 4 foot rock wall then move back 4 feet from the wall and then put another 4 foot wall and you’re still good. I work for a company that builds subdivisions, and this is standard operating procedure when you’re dealing with extreme elevation changes.
Gotta love idiot neighbors who are always quick to tell others to "Mind your business" only to get totally rekt by HOA and the City. I love tree law, man! I'm not a fan of HOAs but this one was a juicy one. Karma is a b***h! 😂
My dad has a similar story to the last one, but the roles are reversed. He's a construction worker and when he worked for the previous company due to his experience he was given high roles. At times he was also selected as the construction site manager. He's a guy that never gets mad at anyone. You have to piss him off quite badly to get yelled at by him. One day he noticed one of the people beneath him was slacking off and asking him for help. He was slowing down the workday so much that it was impacting my dad's work. He turned to him and yelled at him that he's his superior right now and he has to follow his orders. That he's not the one who gets to bark orders. And he's some lowly worker (as in his his role is way lower in the work pyramid). Everyone on the job site got really worried. All the workers were wondering how incompetent must've this guy been to make my dad so mad. Needless to say when he quit the company was scrambling to work because the most valuable employee wasn't pulling in as much work. And the only people doing anything kept working terribly costing the company more money to fix the constant mistakes.

TREE LAAAAAAAW!!!!
Watching rSlash while getting ready for prom is a lit experience
Three (3) ways they effed up in the first story, and WHY it's important to get the proper types of certified engineers onto the site to survey, create an actually good plan, AND agree to sign off on the work that actually gets done:
1. Removing large trees on a slope = greatly increased chance of a landslide, due to the removal of vast root systems stabilizing the soil. That's landslide/mudslide 101, folks! The Oso community in Washington State was wrecked because the logging company took down too many trees, destabilizing the soil and leading to the loss of too many lives.
2. Building a tall retaining wall WITHOUT stabilization cloth layered up at specified distances, plus anchor piles installed, depending on the slope & soil type = very much a chance of a "blow-out," aka the retaining wall collapses, creating yet another landslide. Oddly enough, you can stabilize the sides of a steep embankment by inserting simple open-weave "cloth" (materials may vary, but basically it's a mesh) in layers like sheets of lasagna noodles. You can get away without needing it over short distances, but that five-feet rule is there for a *reason.*
This special type of long-lasting open-weave "cloth," which is layered horizontally like every foot or something between packed layers of a special soil mix that has all the proper settling & draining properties, is literally why you can have stand-alone ramps leading up to overpass bridges, without a craptonne of earth buttressing to either side of the ramp...and it can ONLY be done in certain climates with certain soil types, with a lot of very specific features. (It's been a few years since I read up on the specs, so don't quote me; always do your own research, folks, especially as the standards can & will change after years of further testing and study!)
3. Building a retaining wall system without doing a hydrology study on the local soil could also lead to a mudslide collapsing the retaining wall. How wet can it get, how much water will it hold, is it very sandy or very clay rich, how much decay will cause cavities to open up, leading to sinkhole issues that could fill with eater, etc, etc, etc? Those cinderblocks are not a solid steel-reinforced concrete panel...and even solid concrete panels can develop cracks. If you have no idea of what the soil type is like, you have no idea of what problems it can & will cause.
And just like the dreaded appearance of cracks in a dam, if you get water pressure building up inside those cinderblock walls without proper drainage, it's just like a dam breaking. Massive amounts of damage, massive amounts of money paid out to fix everything the *right* way. (This, btw, is why you occasionally see those little pipe holes in cement retaining walls. You'll notice that they almost always slant out down. It's because they're permitting the soil type behind that retaining wall to drain at the proper rate, relieving water pressure before it cracks the wall and destroys it in a collapse.)

1st story: Huh, first time I have heard about HOA being the good ones.
Also, funnily enough, in my country the government,at best, would put some board saying 'This construction is paused by the government', that can be easily taken away and put in the trash, which normally happens.
FINALLY the return of tree law!
Story 3: I hate people such as that customer. I have to dodge debris on the highways _constantly_ because some pinhead didn’t tie down nor properly secure their loads. One bump in the road, and they make an unholy mess for everyone else to avoid.

The more stories i come across about bad bosses, the more I realize that ownership and upper management should be worried when middle managers start magically cutting costs. It's usually unethical at best and wildly illegal at worst
I watch too much Reddit content because I just heard that tree law story earlier this morning 😂
first story: soon I heard the neighbor was cut down big tree I already knew where it was gong and the fact the neighbor blame OP and her husband but all OP husband was try warn him what was going happened and second story: the boss instead promote OP and give him a raise, he demote him and try bully him that this why you alway treat your employees good with respect

Missed some good ol’ tree law!
I gotta wonder if the fridge guy even lost the fridge on the freeway or if he just gently dropped it off somewhere in an attempt to scam the sears into a free fridge, because I just CANT believe that any man would think a TV cable would be used for anything other than plugging in a TV.
i genuinely think he believed that a coax cable could support the weight. i only say that because when i was like 10/11, i tried to use some of the spare wire we had as a tree swing, let me tell you how fast i hit the ground when that “rope” untied from the tree with barely any pressure😭i just think this guy has the thought process of a literal child and thought like i did that since it’s a thicker type of cable it would work better but obviously not
I do love Tree Law, but I do need to say, wherever those people live, I want nothing to do with. City says you can’t do this, can’t do that, HOA says you can’t do this. Sounds like hell.
3am post like clockwork, thanks rslash😊
Malicious compliance can be mildly interesting and entertaining at best, compared to the other subreddits he covers. However, when tree law gets involved, then it's about the same level of entertainment as the superior subreddits.

Story 1: besides him being rude, I'm on the neighbors side tbh. What you do on your property shouldn't be so heavily restricted.
Even if you own the land your house is on, you still have to follow city laws and ordinances. A lot of these restrictions are in place for safety reasons. Like someone in another comment said, cutting down a tree on a hill can dislodge the earth underneath and potentially cause landslides that will affect the other properties above and below the neighbor's and can be very dangerous, the wall wasn't up to safety codes, meaning it could eventually come tumbling down and either land on someone, or potentially roll down the hill and damage someone else's property. It's not just people telling you what you can and can't do on your property.
Ohmygoodnessgracious TREE LAW

Dabney sure does love him some goooood tree law
As a computer/electronics nerd I can't comprehend who would have thought to use coaxial cable as a replacement for rope?
Even if it's the outdoor rated stuff I still can't be that strong.
Third story: I remember this story but with a couch instead of a fridge. Besides that everything else is exactly the same. That aside, coaxial cable is not strong, at all. It may be stronger than more modern connection cables is still a 2/16 of an inch if metal surrounded by plastic and isolation. It won't hold even a kid on top.

The fridge was in three PIECES, not places, Dabney!
RSlash… you mis-understand the story of the fridge. The buyer was so certain he was correct and everyone else was wrong, the only way he could possibly be proven wrong is if the store employees had made some Faustian deal with arcane forces to make him appear “wrong”… in his mind the possibility of him being wrong is an impossibility! So of course it’s the employees fault!

i had a guy similar to the cable guy. only it was a lawn mower and a bunch of galvanized stock tanks. he insisted on using these bungee cords which is normally fine but their hooks were broken so he was going to tie them to these loops on his truck flap thing. I managed to convince him to let us secure his stuff with twine and we could use the cords as a safety measure. he said fine. long story short, he came in the next day and told me he lost two of his busted bungee cords on the way home, but the twine held so thanks for arguing with him

the first one though I'm kinda on the same side as the neighbor, simply because the city really shouldn't be allowed to tell you what to do with your own property. You own it, you pay taxes on it, etc. That being said, he should have all that done properly, not under the table or half assed, and if that requires licensed people to do it, then they should be called.
