    Why I think Super Paper Mario is the best in the Paper Mario series:
    - That Story, goddamn.

    • @zjzr08
      @zjzr08 Před 4 lety +4

      My problem with this is that the creators (the same as the first 2) wanted to define the series outside of just the system of the 1st 2, but kept the pillars of the "goal" of what the franchise was supposed to be -- in-depth Mario adventures. They're set at the same timeline (as seen with the many references of the OG games throughout SPM), the items are the same, most abilities, and characters. The core four seemingly progressed in the 3 games and was in their peak during SPM. Being set in an alternate dimension setting helped its overall unique experience IMO.
      Overall I can't see why SPM can't be part of this series (and I felt they were going back to classic form anyway until the main team got replaced) just for the gameplay, when some franchise has the same core mechanics but had bogged down on other aspects supporting it.

    This was my first Paper Mario game ever and if I'm being honest, I felt that Super Paper Mario took a steep nosedive in terms of gameplay towards the latter half of the adventure. The Overthere in particular was one of the most mind-numbing and tedious levels I've ever had to endure in a Mario game. While the characters, story, and dialogue are top notch, it often felt like I had to drag my way through some of the gameplay sections just to see the story progress. I truly hate the fact that I dislike this game because there's so much that it does right and it was so close to being one of my favorites, but I just can't bring myself to enjoy it. For all that it does right, I consider SPM to be a good Paper Mario game, yet I can't call it a good standalone game. Those are just my honest thoughts.

    • @chuckbatman5
      @chuckbatman5 Před 4 lety +16

      I think that's the area SPM struggles in the most; level design. For every great level that subverts expectations in a fun way, there's a level like The Overthere or the outer space fetch quest or the level where you have to go back and forth to get the code for hitting the blocks or the goddamnstupidtreeclimbinglevelwiththeflowerenemiesthatsnipeyouoffeveryplatform...basically, when the levels are good they're incredible and when they're bad they're awful repetitive slogs. Even the Sammer Guy Kingdom that he uses as an example of the great story, is actually quite monotonous until the world gets destroyed.
      However I would argue every Paper Mario game has a few really repetitive areas with overly tedious backtracking. I think you just notice it more in SPM because the game presents itself as a 2D platformer, so it's more noticeable when it fails in level design because good level design is the core component of a 2D platformer

      Sorry, friend. I've been playing the games since they were first released. Now you may not agree, but to call my argument ignorant is in itself ignorant when the two biggest flops of the franchise had the turn based combat to begin with. That was one of the arguments made in this video. I'm sorry, but mario RPG's are rather flat and underwhelming compared to actual RPG's. They're good mario games, but are mediocre RPG's at best.

      @TheRagnarokknight Před 4 lety +3

      Yet you're saying that the turn based battle system was what made the series. How can you argue differences when they were there? At least for color splash and Sticker Star, the proof was in the development in itself that they gutted the story while trying to flesh out that very combat system. What set paper mario apart was its quirky style of world and story. The proof was in the pudding. You can't deny it. You just want to deny it.

    • @TheRagnarokknight
      @TheRagnarokknight Před 4 lety +1

      The partner system did nothing other than bring the world to life as they were mostly abilities mario could do without them either by himself or with items. The badge system restricted mario in how he could battle in itself until that was discarded with the sticker system as all you needed to do was collect stickers. The badges capped at 99 ad even then, will not grant you access to every badge you had no matter how conservative you were. At least the stickers as long as you had room, which were ample pages, you had virtually no limit at access to your best abilities. Many other RPG's did not and do not have this issue. Again, you are delusional. I at least know that the games themselves offer more than a lackluster system. And Super Paper Mario proves it. It has the best story and stands out in the franchise, but the moment that was dulled foe sticker star, it showed. I guarantee that if the system reflected the thousand year door, you'd drop it in less than an hour with how dull the world is and how pointless the story is. The partners would be as barren as everything else and the badges wouldn't be any better. Stop deluding yourself.

    I feel like I'm one of the few people in existence who liked Paper Mario TTYD for it's unique take on turn-based RPG gameplay... The stage, the star points, the slot machine, the random mishaps during battle, it was all so unique and made it stand out in the RPG genre. That's personally why I could never get into SPM. Because I've always been a gameplay-first kind of person, and I've always seen the game as a "Why would I play this when I can just replay some of the classic Mario titles instead?" It didn't help either that I never really liked the actual physics and controls of how Mario moved during the overworld in regards to platforming challenges from the first two games, and also how we got both New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

In prior games, Bowser was always at the end of the game as the final boss; but here, he's the boss of World 1, and is defeated rather gruesomely at that (you literally see him burn alive as the skin melts off of his bones, also a first).
    It's in fact his son, Bowser Jr., who serves as the main antagonist of the game from that point forward. Bowser is by all means dead, and his son has taken control of his armies in order to avenge him; and it's only at the very end of the game that he's revived for one final boss fight. It's not much, but I would consider it a subversion of one's expectations.
    The rest of the NSMB series, though? Bland and unremarkable story, unfortunately

    I think the "paper" didn't come in for the world and character's literal paper material, but for its world being like something out of a storybook. I think this storybook theme best describes what classic Paper Mario is. What do great storybooks have? Deep story-telling, lovable & wacky characters, and surprises! Running through these games is like a child running over a pop-up storybook exploring all the little pieces hidden around each page, or reading a good story that pulls you into its world through its puzzling intrigue. That's why I think these games are so fantastic.
    Modern Paper Mario is a different series entirely how I see it. It's like... some lame movie adaptations that are concerned with expressing their own creative interpretations before really understanding the essence of the original material and what made it so remarkable. Don't get me wrong, I had an enjoyable time with Color Splash and Origami King looks like an entertaining an daction-packed game... But when I remember those classic Paper Mario games, I feel disappointed that that series just quite isn't with us anymore.
    Super Paper Mario had a style that didn't even make sense for literal paper. But the computer cursor scheme works *so* well to enhance the Paper Mario world. The game has a thoughtful story and an inventive world, and it's my favorite Paper Mario game. It feels disappointing that we never got to see this fantastic series develop in more directions with more games.

    The key to why Super Paper Mario belongs with the first two games and not the latter two lies in that interview with Ryota Kawade: one of the motivations for the new direction was that "showing something that the player has never seen before is one of the core pillars of Paper Mario."
    Then Miyamoto threw a tantrum and they started doing the opposite, bending over backwards to avoid showing the player anything new or creative.

    Thank you so much for this video. Truly. I played through PM64, TTYD, and SPM as a child. Once I had to give up my N64 because I had to move, I only had my GC and Wii left, and I always played TTYD and SPM. I really did enjoy the gameplay of SPM. We weren't in Mario's world, so it felt okay to me that the traditional RPG elements got removed.
    It was only until a couple years ago and I really invested into the story more, and it absolutely moved me and had me so into the game. I cried because it was just so good and immersive with the storyline, something that reminded me of TTYD, but had a much more emotional touch to it, because we weren't in Mario's world anymore, we were in theirs. I started replaying the game once again but I can't bring myself to finish it, the ending always gets to me, and a game to do that to me is rare. I can replay TTYD and PM64 any day, but there's something about this game that just... I just can't emotionally. I am really happy I grew up with these three games in my life, and it always made me sad to come online and see SPM get bashed on because of it being the middle child to the poorer entries into the series (I liked Color Splash to a degree, not re-playable in my book, however, I did like some of the humor though!), so thank you for bringing justice to this beautifully crafted game!

    Funny thing, Nintendo once tried to claim Color Splash is a Action RPG when directly questioned about its gameplay mechanics. Clearly they have no idea what an ARPG actually is. They only said that to give Color Splash some amount of substance to appeal to a wider audience, which failed badly regardless.

    One of the things I like the most about Mario games is the unique and interesting world. Ever since Super Mario Bros, the entire concept, Goombas, Koopas with their shell mechanics, that weird thingy in the cloud that throws these spiky things, the mushrooms that make you grow bigger or give you more lives, the pipes that lead to strange places... It's all so strange. It's a world which has so much things that it feels like it's real in some sense.
    And the later Mario games felt the same: Super Mario Bros 3, with it's new powerups, bigger world and different places. Or Super Mario Bros 2 with it's strange world of throwing vegetables at enemies. And I really adored Mario RPG for it's unusual music, and strange places and characters.
    Just the feeling of hearing a level theme and being perfectly absorbed into it is so amazing.
    While I never played Super Paper Mario, I thought it's an interesting game. Even if we ignore story and characters, the concept is super intriguing. The ability to move in different dimensions and explore this unique and interesting world. Sort of like going into pipes and finding loot, or new places such as warp place at 1-2.
    I feel SPM fits perfectly with other Mario games.

      Agreed. The next Paper Mario game after PM: TOK should have original characters (incl. partners), mix between 2D/3D platform and RPG, good music, good graphics, simple, yet fresh combat (like in PM: TTYD), good and dark story, experience points and it should be made by creators of BugFables, OG Paper Mario trilogies, Mario & Luigi, fans and Ryota Kawade. Also, it would be nice to have an option to switch between Yoshi's Island (SNES) graphics and new Paper Mario graphics. But it shouldn't have paper gimmicks and paper puns and too much toads.

    Super Paper Mario has always been a very special game for me. It was my first Paper Mario game and really the first time I ever experienced a really good story as a kid. Every inch of Super is just filled with so much charm and creativity that I can’t help but smile every second I’m playing it. And when the story gets emotional or scary it pulls it off about as close to flawlessly as it can (it is sometimes held back though... you can tell there’s things the game wants to say but can’t because of the family friendly nature of it all). Sure, the gameplay isn’t perfect and the character design can be a bit blocky, but if you can look past those things you’ll find one of the most under appreciated gems in Nintendo’s whole gaming library. It inspired me to want to create stories myself, which is something I never would’ve imagined back then. Honestly if you haven’t played this game you absolutely should. It’s not for everyone but when it clicks it’ll stay with you forever.

    I agree with basically all of your points here, however one major thing you forgot about was the badge system. The versatility and interesting effects the badges had were probably my favourite parts of the first two games, and might honestly be my favourite part of the franchise. They allowed players to come up with so many different fun and sometimes completely invincible strategies to wipe major bosses in a single power bounce. However, without this system the paper mario combat would still be pretty cool, but not the incredible system we all know it as.

    It's true about Subverting Player Expectations
    With Super Paper Mario: It was multiple subverting expectations:
    + What Bowser didn't kidnap Princess Peach this time!
    + Princess Peach and Bowser will help Mario on his journey (When its the last time that Mario, Peach, and Bowser working together: 1996!)
    + Luigi playing a bigger role in this story! (Mr. L: 1st appearance)
    + Count Bleck's (main villain) motives!
    + Plot Twist!
    Its shame new team behind Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Color Splash have no idea what makes Paper Mario so special. It's not about the papers and art supplies. And Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't help at all...
