GMTV ad breaks and promos (2000) [2]

  • Plenty of ads and promos from the end of multiple consecutive (I think) days of GMTV, all from the same tape, edited together into one video for your enjoyment. Judging by which films are being promoted during the breaks, these must have been recorded during the summer holidays of 2000 - Stuart Little and Viva Rock Vegas were both released in July of that year, and The Road to El Dorado at the beginning of August.
One that caught my eye was the Frosted and Coco Shreddies ad, which I think was clearly aping the distinctive style of the Cartoon Network of that era. I'm not sure I like the intimation, but I do like the animation. Note also the Bond-style Captain Birdseye reinvention, which I absolutely don't approve of, plus how big Tesco were going in the online home delivery shopping service. All it took was another two decades and a global pandemic for it to catch on.
Oh, and stay tuned right until the end for the briefest of brief glimpses of Diggit.
Grateful thanks to @David315842 for sending me this tape.
(If you're a copyright holder and have any objections, please feel free to contact me. Alternatively, I haven't monetised the video, so you're welcome to do so, and that way everybody wins.)

I can tell you that this was from the week before that first lot of ads and continuity were posted, in early August. GMTV had Pokemon play each week, but the second cartoon would change each week. :) It is great though seeing these ads again, thanks for posting these. :) Birds Eye was going through a 'phase' at the time, but at least it wasn't trying to bamboozle/scare kids with that artificial ingredients ad from 2005.

Interesting - thanks for that. So besides Timon and Pumbaa, there was Hercules, Recess, and Sabrina to accompany Pokemon. Is that right? Just trying to piece it all together in my mind.
I wonder what the 'real' Captain Birdseye thought of his Bond-esque nephew or whatever he was supposed to be. I don't know why they didn't just make him Secret Agent Birdseye or something like that, instead of actively replacing an established character. I think about these things way too deeply!
Thanks as always for the tape - glad you enjoyed it. :-)

@@VideotapeFTW That sounds about right. It would have been cartoons that were airing on Diggit at the time, so that makes sense. (Diggit using Disney cartoons and from other companies Disney owned at the time like DiC). No doubt the Birds Eye executives wanted to re-imagine Captain Birds Eye for the new millennium, but he didn't last. He actually disappeared around the same time as those weird "Quest For the Roundtree" ads did. :D Which wasn't really a bad thing, we just know him as a sea captain more then a secret agent. Oh something that you 'may' come across on my tapes is news and continuity from the Meridian and Anglia regions, from roughly around this time, but again that's only a possibility. :) You're welcome as always. :)

@@David315842 I haven't come across any Meridian or Anglia yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't any. I don't necessarily watch that closely on initial capture - I tend to log the tapes after (so I can pause and go back if I need), and I haven't finished doing that yet. I did come across part of an episode of Gamesville, though, to got with that Cybernet. :-)

@@VideotapeFTW They may be featured on future tapes I'll send as well, that's another possibility. Ah thank you, I knew there was another video game related show on Sky One that I watched a couple of episodes of but I couldn't remember what it was called. But yeah they had someone called the "Games Guru" who dressed in black and handled the cheats on the show or something like. But yeah, thanks for reminding me. Of course, there's no rush to go through them all as I did send you 30 tapes last summer. :D

    16:19 “AHHHHHHHHH TIDAL WAVE!!!!!!”
Frubes Tube: I’m not easily afraid of that.
(BONUS: 20:16 Not gonna lie, I’d buy some Fish Fingers if I saw an ad like that. That’s wicked sick.)

Interesting that during the Summer of 2000, GMTV started showing the second season of Pokemon (Orange Islands) not long after Sky One, CITV eventually started showing the series by the start of 2001 if my memory is correct. CITV also stopped showing Pokemon for a bit by May/June 2001 around the same time the second generation was released on Game Boy Color which arguably was when Pokemon began to decline in mainstream popularity, meanwhile GMTV carried it on for years to come.

That just proved how popular the show was at the time that ITV wanted one of their children centric shows to air the most recent episodes as soon as they could.

Some nice cross brand promotion in the Frubes ad featuring the Twix ice cream bar, i remember that well! Also the Scottish voice in those Febreze ads sounds very familiar, not sure if it's Phyllida Law (Emma Thompson's mum) or Susan Rae.

It almost looks like the Twix logo, but it actually says choc. You got to freeze frame it (no pun intended) at the right moment to see it, but from the naked eye, it did look a bit like the Twix logo. If they did, they would legally get into from Mars Incorporated for using a logo that Yoplait does not own.

Oh yeah i see it now. Very clever bit of camera trickery!
