CITV continuity clips, promos and ads (Feb/March 2002)

  • Some TellyTots and CITV links, mostly around Kipper and Little Ghosts, presented by David Leon, Leigh Morrison, Leah Charles, and Stephen Mulhern. Recorded across multiple days in 2002, with one in the middle mentioned as being St David's Day, so presumably these come from both February and March of that year.
    Includes promos and trails for the likes of Cardcaptors, Digimon, How 2, Sir Gadabout, My Parents Are Aliens, and more. I like how they vary the continuity, throwing in little skits here and there, holding up viewers' masterpieces, reading out messages they've received, and even a single FX shot that has one of them leaping around the screen. Note that you can get in touch by post, e-mail, phone, and now text - they've added a scrolling ticker at the bottom for such eventualities. Not sure what those 'Part of CITV' ident things are all about, but I don't disapprove.
    As for the ad breaks, the big films being promoted are Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Atlantis on DVD, and Monsters Inc. The last of those has a couple of tie-ins, one of which being with McDonald's, who also seem to attempt to capitalise on the impending Mother's Day. Another ad is for the card game Uno, which, unless I'm completely mistaken, has never truly caught on here in the UK the same way as in the US. Am I wrong? I'll tell you what is wrong, though: that Walkers ad with Gary Lineker and David Seaman. Once seen, cannot be unseen.
    Many thanks to @David315842 for sending me this tape.

    Can you believe by the end of that year Stephen, David and Leigh all left CITV, Stephen moved on to do Saturday mornings/other endeavours on CITV over the years, now Mulhern is ITV's light entertainment go-to-guy who isn't Ant and Dec or Joel Dommett. David and Leigh as far as I'm aware have not done any TV work since CITV
    Also Telly Tots was retired that same year, Steve Ryde who had voiced some of the characters and was still one of the producers of CITV at the time moved over to CBBC to produce Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow

    • @TrevorDistance
      @TrevorDistance Před 13 dny +1

      *I think* I'm right in saying Steve Ryde had already crossed the floor to the Beeb by this point; from what I've read/heard he was poached by them in the latter half of 2001 to produce some of CBBC's studio links, as they were gearing up to make lots more of them in the wake of the inbound revamp and channel launch that would've happened around the exact same time as these clips. This is supposed to be how he (and Da Bungalow director Simon Hepworth) then got the job to do the show with Dick and Dom - they had after all returned to present as part of that, and the four worked well enough together that a series was mooted.
      I assume the above is why all of the Telly Tots clips here (though I haven't watched these closely!) all seem to use the same generic lines and animations over and over again, with nothing to differentiate them or reflect the day's shows? They did indeed get rid of it this year, only just after this if memory serves correct, as it would've been increasingly pointless transmitting just those ad nauseum...

      @@TrevorDistance According to his Linkedin, Ryde left CITV in October 2001 but joined the BBC shortly afterwards just before the CBBC Channel had launched presumably to produce some of CBBC's studio links so he indeed already left CITV by this time of this video but he did recruit the David, Leigh and Leah a little before his departure

    Ooooooooooh Cardcaptor Sakura!
    Also I refuse to call it by its dub name, the Nelvana dub cut a lot of pivotal moments, including Shaoran's crush, Yukito's relationship with Sakura's big brother, even the final scene with Sakura giving the teddy bear to Shaoran, and the final ending with "Platinum" and Sakura's message to the viewers!
    Nonetheless it's great to see even more CITV, I wish it could have been before this but oh well any era is a good era!

      I love all eras but the 1998-01 era has always been my favorite.
      I guess because of how it has brought me together with some amazing friends over the years and especially inspired my channel.
      Also it got me into Cardcaptor Sakura and Digimon Adventure, 02 is my favorite and I see it featured here too! I wish they dubbed "Break up" and actually gave "I wish" a proper English version instead of the crap in the dub. I couldn't watch Tamers it felt way too boring but I LOVED "The Biggest Dreamer"

      The FCC and Canadian regulations didn't want to address underage or homosexual relations, hence the edits. Though Matt Hill being Kero was a bit of a misstep in the casting I will admit that. Nothing against him, but that voice for Kero was all wrong.

    The quality and randomness I again apologize for, but at least everyone is enjoying these. :) Yeah, we do have Uno still here in the UK, the regular one and a few variants. 2002 obviously was a year that they tried getting kids to be part of it by contacting them, having their opinions be on teh show etc. it was a campaign they seem to have taken very seriously. McDonald's UK sure saved money on that Monsters Inc. Happy Meal ad, as they simply took most of an NTSC American ad (done by Pixar themselves) and just added a British narrator, exclusive text and an end image, they certainly wanted to get their monies worth from using them to create the ad I'm sure and they must have done, as it would have been used in many more countries around the world. Ah yes that Walkers ad.....Erm moving on. :D DFS, they should just basically have their 4 years interest free credit and nothing to pay for the first-year thing a permanent part of their store. But what can you do? :D

    • @VideotapeFTW
      @VideotapeFTW  Před 15 dny +1

      No problem with the quality, and randomness is good! Thanks as always for the tape - I love these ones that show exactly what the era was like. All that texting and e-mailing in is a far cry from what it was like when CITV first went live back in 1987! And seeing which films were big at the time and whether they're held in high regard now (Monsters Inc passes that test) is always interesting.

      @@VideotapeFTW Of course it would, it's a Disney/Pixar film, they usually for the most part do standup well. :) I'm glad you're enjoying the content too, despite the randomness. I do recall going on to the CITV website back in the day. It did carry over the blue sky motive they had in the early part of the decade, along with the large yellow semi-circles which you click on to access different parts of the site, at least that's all from memory. I never imagined that one day I would be talking about the old CITV website. :D

      @@David315842 That reminds me - I came across a CITV clip on one of your tapes where they talked about "Mouse Week". You'd assume it was about a cartoon mouse, but, no - it's "mouse" as in computer mouse, and I think the whole point was trying to teach viewers how to use computers and, by extension, the CITV website. Funny to think there was a time when you needed to teach a whole generation how to use a website, but this was still the era when "Are you online?" was a common question.

      @@VideotapeFTW Yes, I remember that and it's as you said, there was a special program that helped kids learn how to use modern PC's at the time I believe. But yeah, back in the day such a program would be very helpful. Nowadays, it will be getting people to use smart devices like tablet PC's or smart phones. :D

    Is that it so with the Telly Tots or is there still more also I thought Kipper was aired in full widescreen when it was on Telly Tots

    • @lucassarchive5646
      @lucassarchive5646 Před 15 dny +1

      It was in widescreen, however, this is clearly recorded from analogue television so therefore this recording is in 14:9 and 4:3.

    • @David315842
      @David315842 Před 15 dny

      That was all that's on the tape I'm afraid. The aspect ratio depends on what TV you had and if it could support widescreen or not. If they are black bars, then it supports 14:9, if it didn't, then it's a 4:3 broadcast.

    I don't remember Little Ghosts at all but Cardcaptors and Digimon were fantastic. How 2 was great as well.
    17:28 25:39 I have nothing nice to say about the McDonald's adverts that manipulated young minds without even mentioning McDonald's itself.
