Roland Ratzenberger vs Roland Rat: The Race of the Century (1985)

- It was on this weekend 30 years ago (at the time of writing) that the catastrophic events of Imola changed Formula One forever. The great Ayrton Senna was killed during the race itself, and being a three-time champion meant that the tragedy the day before was overshadowed. The death of Roland Ratzenberger during qualifying has sadly become something of a footnote, or even the answer to a morbid quiz question, but the Austrian was a serial winner in his own right throughout his career, and, in a human sense, no less a loss. And it's that human side that we celebrate here, as he takes on his near-namesake in the much-hyped Race of the Century.
This clip is taken from The Official Worldwide Roland Rat Appreciation Society (or OWRASS for short) Summer Spectacular from 1985 - possibly the very last one at the end of the holidays before the rat deserted TV-am - and if you want to see the rest, you can watch it here:

You don't get too many sports stars with senses of humour and self-awareness these days, willing to send themselves up and look a bit silly next to a big-headed cheating puppet superstar (and especially not in a foreign language), but here we are. How this all came to pass is beyond me, but I'm certainly glad that it did.

Remember when Ratzenburger debuted in F1 thinking it was funny how he shared names with the rat from my then recent childhood. Never realised it was acknowledged by both parties til now!

Likewise, I'm of a similar age and made the connection. I'm pleased he could play along with it, especially with his compatriot being known as the "Super Rat"
I bet the rat team’s boss is Flavio Briatore.

I think it would be hard to keep him out of the car after he had spent so many years trying to get into one.
You'd just need to tell him the front wing was damaged. Had it not broken he'd have been fine.
As a kid growing up in the 80s not only do I vividly remember Roland Rat who was super popular and always on TV, I will never forget that tragic weekend watching the racing live where both Ratzenberger and Senna sadly passed away.
I had heard about this collaboration but not seen it until today, so awesome to see this preserved on the internet all these years later, so thanks for posting, this was fun to see
Your memory is playing tricks with you, Roland passed on the Saturday in qualifying or practice, Ayrton was the only driver to sadly pass on race day. A most terrible race weekend as Rubens had a really bad crash in practice too.
The only good thing to come from it was that the drivers safety became a big issue, and started to get better.
Fly high Roland Ratzenberger and Aryton Senna, gone but never forgotten even after 30 years since they departed Earth forever too early 😢

i’m too young to remember this cause obv i was 1 years old in 1985. but i do remember watching and seeing Roland Rat in the late 80’s into the early 90’s on TV-am
Roland Rat actually defected to the BBC and got his own Saturday evening series at some point, but it was never as good as his TV-am days. He was much funnier when he _thought_ he was the star but wasn't, rather than actually having his name top of the bill.

Sorry to hear that this weekend would have been the anniversary of an infamous F1 race and qualifying where two men lost their lives, one who is seen here. :( But at least Roland Ratzenberger as you said seemed to have a sense of humour when he was doing this clip.
It was a surreal weekend. Like you say, though, better to remember the happier times - it's absolutely mad that this Race of the Century ever even happened at all, but I'm glad it did. :-)

I was only young, but i remember him more from his TV-AM days than his time at the BBC.
I've heard Roland be referred to (possibly by himself) as the rat that saved the sinking ship - TV-am was in serious trouble until he came along and took the nation by storm. I think they overtook the BBC in terms of viewing figures thanks to him, which was why the Beeb poached him. But he fell pretty flat there, never found his niche, while TV-am replaced his holiday slot with Wacaday, and the rest is history.

(Apart from for two of my cousins who got banned from watching it because one absolutely brained the other trying to play Mallett's Mallet.) There are a handful of clips on my channel - absolutely legendary television made with zero budget in a tiny corner of a studio.

The rear wing on that pink car generated so much downforce at high speed (30 mph) that the winner was only ever going to be Roland Rat! That & water as fuel substitute in Roland Ratzenberger's car of course!
