- Damon Hill visited Adelaide for the 2024 Adelaide Motorsport Festival, held a week prior to the 2024 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
While in Adelaide Damon put together this great feature for Sky Sports F1, which was shown in the race build up package for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

I spent a season as a video cameraman working on behalf of Ricoh (sponsor for Damon) trailing him as he transitioned from bikes to cars (Formulae Ford). I rarely met a man who was more of a gentleman (or a genius on bikes for that matter). He was so gracious to everyone he met, including his competitors, that many said he was just too 'nice' for the sport. An outstanding sportsman!

He gave me some instruction around Brands in the mid 80’s . He was incredibly helpful, spot on with his advice, direct but overlayed with that obvious polite demeanor. Very dry amusing wit too. Great guy. His auto bio is well worth a read.

True. Still remember feeling the heartbreak with that one. As well as Suzuka 94, Brazil 1996 is also one of Hill's forgotten great drives in terrible conditions. I was 14 when I stayed up all night to watch Adelaide - I can still remember the disdain I had for Schumacher at the time!

- I never liked Schumacher, he was a dirty driver. We've just seen Alonso penalised for something so minor, yet Schumacher pulled these types of things all the time. If only we had all the telemetry back then, Schumacher probably would have been penalised every week.

Hill had a significantly better win ratio in the wet than both Mansell and Prost (12% each). His 20% puts him 5th in the all time list behind only Senna, Schumacher, Lewis and Verstappen…

I've got a lot of respect for Damon, 1994 was a hard year for him after Ayrton's death, He was under tremendous pressure as the new team leader to try and get the job done, Also nice of him to mention that loosing a race or championship was nothing compared to loosing Ayrton, Damon's a true gent 👍

I briefly spoke to Damon back in the '00s at Silverstone and he came across as an extremely nice bloke. I told him his father was my idol back in the'60s. His eyes lit up.

One of the greatest clips i seen of Damon Hill was when he was at a race track, his dad`s Lotus drove past him he said, that`s my dad. A proper moment.
Remember that weekend like it was yesterday. Made the treck up from Melbourne as a teenager sitting on pit straight. Such a great performance by Damon to take the fight to Schumacher right up to the wire. But it was also great to witness Mansell's last win.

With due respect to Damon he did a great job that season, but the only reason he was in a position to fight for a title in Adelaide was FIA who stripped Michael of 30 points (1 race Win taken away + 2 race ban).

@@zounds13Patrick gave a good interview where he said it was poor management on Damon's side that led to that. It's a shame as I think he would've easily taken the title the following year too.

@@pb5x5 Williams had already made their mind up on Damon at the end of '95 following numerous errors from him that season (see Silverstone & Monza from that year) They only let him stay for '96 due to Villeneuve needing a season to settle in.
At the time I didn’t think Damon was interesting and I wasn’t a fan. Years later after reading his biography I was amazed at his journey, I wish I had known, I would have supported him at the time!!
We had no internet and had to rely on what was shown on TV. I was a Schumacher fan as a teen and Hill was the nemesis. Now I am glad to see him walking around healthy.
So cool to hear and see Damon talk about this. I always appreciated the "gentleman champion".
Now he may not have had the agression of some other drivers, he sure was a talent in driving. He had a very smooth hand and foot control.

I'm the same way when I think about Moffat in the XC Cobra battling it out against the likes of Brock ect till the motor blew and Johnson hitting the rock a couple of year's later... both were like yesterday to me too, and it makes my think of my grandmother too as both those moments were shared with her in her lounge room as a child.

I remember that Michael was banned to race in Italy and Portugal due a controversial decision by FIA during a non cumpriment of a Michael's stop-and-go during the UK GP.
At the time, this sound like the FIA trying to bring the Schumacher-Hill dispute to the last race. Wich was done.
Michael was pretty nervous during all the weekend of the Adelaide GP. Nowadays i don't think that Michael made a 'dirt-game' with Hill as he made with Jacques.

Hill is undoubtedly one of the F1 GOATs.
Damon is one of the most underrated and under appreciated World Champions of our time. I grew up with a Graham Hill Lotus placard on my bedroom door with my name on it, and Damon, like his father, was the quintessential gentlemen racer. Some criticized his lack of ‘win at all costs’ mindset, but he was the last vestige of a dashing and refined gentleman British Grand Prix driver, absolutely in the mold of his great father. It was my privilege to watch him compete, and to both win and lose with dignity showed the world something his arch nemesis greatly lacked, which was character.
I dunno. Damon was in cars that you really couldn't lose in unless it was to your team mate or Shumacher or Senna. Those Williams were so far ahead of anything else.

you are thinking of the 92 and 93 Williams. The 94 lost alot of the systems that made the 93 so good. Senna wasn't really beating michael either.
@@alphatrion100 Senna was on pole in the first 3 races. The Williams was clearly the faster car. It was just very difficult to drive over the race distance.

I saw that rain race, it was nail biting entertainment. Watching this video now and Sir Murray Walker said 3.3 seconds, it sends goosebumps everytime I hear that.

I was supporting Schumacher in 1994 and think he deserved the championship, besides the irregularities in the Benetton team that eventually lead to four disqualifications/bans for Schumacher within that season. But I was super happy for Hill winning the championship in 96. I still proudly own an autograph and a fan tshirt from Damon!

I was on the balcony of one of the townhouses on the southern side of Flinders Street watching this. Schumaker was out of the car and devestated, until he realised Damon was not circulating, then he became jubiulant. It looked deliberate to me. What a gentleman Damon is!

Also, watch the 95 season and you'll see some deliberate crashes hill does against Schumacher.
Spoke like an absolute gentleman, not a bad word about Michael respecting the current and very sad state of his health. You might not like Damon as a driver, but if you watch his interviews you will certainly like him as a person. This is coming from a lifetime Schumacher fan.
My all time favourite race was the 1996 German G/Prix at Hockenhiem which Damon won eventually. That track was amazing and for the sanity of all the long suffering fans that loved it back then, it must be reinstated,😅

I have great respect for Brundle as a driver. He was an excellent driver that did not get the breaks. But he was courageous and brave and tough as they come. A real racer. Damon epitomizes all the virtues of good sportsmanship and his late great father would be extremely proud of him. Not to forget that he was a brilliant driver, competing head on and winning against Schumacher
Brundle is a World SportsCar Champion. He went there after his F1 career. He seems to be one of the few journalists that the teams trust with their previous seasons' cars. Got plenty of respect from me (as do both Damon, Gentleman racer and Michael [almost Sennaesque in his pursuit]).
Sadly that accident he had in Dallas really compromised his career. But I agree, he was very talented. And despite his struggle to left foot brake he pushed Schumacher very hard in 92
This is still the hardest thing to watch for me because i highly rate Damon as a driver.
4:23 you can clearly see that michael's head was occupied with his car ,steering wheel etc...he didnt see HILL ,but only a couple of tenths before the crash ...it wasnt delibered IMO ,but Michael came out better in the end ! He deserved the championship anyway as he DOMINATED 2/3rds of that year!
Hill was in race for the title only beacause the (!!!!!) 4 race ban for Schumacher. They warent even in the same league that year.
The incident in my opinion is still questionable because it happened so quickly...Michael was well ahead going into the corner after the wall contact and all Damon needed to do was wait until after the corner to blow by Schumacher.
People also forget that the championship should've never come down to Adelaide. The FIA was ruthless on penalizing Schumacher during the season which is the only reason the lead was 1 point at the last round.
Lastly, those most critical of Schumacher are usually the first to justify Senna intentionally taking out Prost in Suzuka 1990 to claim the Championship. The hypocrisy is bizarre and shameful.

What an absolute hero. Dignified, gracious, a true champion. Damon's whole career was an inspiration. His old man would be immeasurably proud.

Too many people blame Schumacher for the incident and try to make a connection between this and '97.
Here we can clearly see that Hill was behind Schumacher and did not have the inside lane just yet.
The Villeneuve is different as he was ahead and Schumacher then turned into him.
The easiest way to differentiate the two scenes is where the cars make contact.
Hill's front wheel is on Schumacher's sidepod.
And Schumacher's front wheel is on Villeneuve's sidepod.
Either way it shows the mindset of the man - win at any cost. You can see where Verstappen gets his inspiration from.

I was there...and my mates and i were standing right on that corner up until a lap or 2 before....
Standing there at the start and hearing (then feeling) the massive engine sound coming towards us with the intensity of that race was incredible...
Those guys are SO so brave..those 90 degree corners were so thin.....going 160Km/h was amazing to see in real life. You cannot comprehend how brave they are. MASSIVE respect for all drivers.
Damon...you were so honorable mate....I love Shumi now..those early years he was willing to do anything to win...even cross a line of sportsmanship...So hated a bit..BUT, love him now totally and this era for all their faults...It all makes it so rich.
Very fortunate to have those days / the best era in our amazing city....It was amazing playing school cricket on Saturday mornings hearing them boom over the city.

This episode is part of the history of F1... Schumacher is the drivers' world champion, Williams is the constructors' world champion... the logic of the season is respected.
After the tragic episode at Imola, Damon Hill proved to be a great driver.

I worked at the final 1995 Adelaide Grand Prix. I worked there for 6 weeks ointrack tro install all the audio visual systems..
We were behind the pits in the paddock. I met both Damon Hill and Clive James there, and said hello a few times as we passed.
Was very cool, the biggest event Adelaide had ever held. The Grand Prix had a record attendance of 520,000 during the weekend, with 210,000 on race day.
Getting around the inside of the track, on a mini bike, through 210,000 people was, um, interesting!
Most underrated driver of all time. Is still 5th on the all time list of wet weather career wins as a percentage. The way he is remembered is blighted by having a rotten 1995, but even then he was very good for half of that season. The main mystery with Hill is not how he got the Williams drive, it’s how a driver that good had such an underwhelming junior record…
Hill and Martin Donnelly were in the same British F3 team. Donnelly had the edge most of the time, got into F3000 sooner and with immediate success and then into F1 with the declining Lotus team. Hill and indeed Coulthard were lucky to get into the best team in the field through the Williams test route and then showed why they deserved those drives.
@@graemejardin5569 there are limitations and caveats to using the shared team mates yardstick as a way of comparing drivers who were never in the same team for all kinds of reasons - but it’s also not a totally irrelevant or misleading one…Coulthard sometimes was faster than Hill, but he was driving beyond his skill level to do so and as a result often crashed.
Mika was faster than DC on outright pace, but less so over a full race distance. So can you say Damon was as good as Mika? No, but over a race distance he was closer to Hakkinen than he gets credit for.
He was also team mates with Mansell, Prost and Senna. Prost and Mansell were both over the hill when he faced them and he was still not quite as fast over a single lap, but again, over a full race distance he was often better than Prost. Mansell k think was too out of shape and under prepared to make a full comparison there, but Prost was much quicker than Mansell over a race distance at Ferrrai. Senna he obviously got nowhere near over any metric.
Hill was one of the last big name drivers to come through where experience counted for a huge amount as there wasn’t enough data for the engineers to coach you, but even so, a few bad races in 1995 aside Hill was great in the wet, easy on the car, pretty consistent and didn’t really make many mistakes…
Biggest weasle of all time though. Looks like one, acts like one and talks like one. Disgrace to f1.

I read that he came into the sport rather late, switching from bikes, and didn’t have the financial backing - his father, though famous, didn’t leave much money, partly due to his early death, and Hill was working two jobs to support his motor racing career. Don’t know if that is all true, but it does seem to be a sport you need to start early, and Hill didn’t.
Amazing how people are scathing of Schumacher, while at the same time eulogise Senna, totally ignoring the reality that Senna had deliberate collisions in a far more dangerous manner (Prost, Suzuka). Even Brundle once said of Senna: "Senna's attitude was: 'I'm coming through (overtake)' and he would leave it up to you whether or not you want to have an accident.".
Many people in life have a hatred within them and a need for it to mentally connect to a villain. Schumacher became that villain to these people. Such bitterness.
Senna would also be viewed as a dirty driver if he hadn't been killed.

I don't believe Senna crashed Prost deliberately in Suzuka. Yes, it was a risky move, Prost opened a small gap and Senna wanted to wedge himself there before it was closed. Given the circumstances, if they crashed Prost would lose, it was logical for him to be extra careful and leave Senna extra space, but he didn't. Prost was also stubborn and didn't want to give an inch, even if it meant he would lose the championship. So yes, it was a risky, dangerous move, but i don't think Senna crashed deliberately so he can win the championship....Schumacher literally looked at Damon and went into him.
I never understood that either. Idolising Senna and on the other hand vilifying Schumacher for similar things. That doesn't really make sense to me.
@@benn8793 It's because Senna was tragically killed, if he was alive today people wouldn't view him in the same way.
As a German who was 12 years old in 1994, I was an ardent fan of Michael Schumacher and he sparked an unprecedented enthusiasm for my generation of motorsport fans (at least in Germany). But Damon Hill was always a special character for whom I felt great sympathy. Sometimes a tragic hero but always a great sportsman. All the better that he was able to crown his career with the titel in 1996.
I was 21, English and a massive Schumacher fan. I was elated he won. Schumacher has great qualities as a human being, that's seen from the way he loved his family and like the simple things in life. A truly great era of F1.

I like that he didn't blame The Michael like the rest of the world did, and I think he's being honest about that too. I remember reading that they were up all night partying, singing karaoke and generally having fun after Damon won his championship.

Damon a totally underestimated F1 driver. At least he got his justly deserved championship in the end🤗🤗. At least he can always say he won his championship fairly.
I still can't help but feel that the very second Micheal Schumacher hit the wall, Williams still had a fraction of a window to get on the radio to Damon and warn him to hang back. But whilst I can't fault Damon's instinct to go for the gap....

The fact that he was able to race and beat Schumacher in a car that Senna considered undriveable sho s what a good racer Hill was
The car driven in the final part of the season was much more different from the beginning ... Much better in comparison ... The model was really developed and improved as the season progressed ... Hill simply could not drive the first version of the car ...
The car has improved dramatically over the season. In addition, Williams had Adrian Newey at the time and arguably the best engine with the Renault V10.
Hill didn't and could never beat Schumacher and Hill had the best car too.
In my home town, I remember to race well.
I was at the Adelaide Grand Prix in 1991. One of the shortest GP's ever thanks to the torrential rain. All we could see was spray. Still, good fun.

Great chapter in the drama of F1 that is difficult to repeat today, nothing like that kind of racing has been seen for a long time. I feel like Damon Hill can look back and the warm blanket of 1996 insulates him from any real bitterness of that incident. The key line from this was asking Martin whether Schumacher took him off, and Martin said "almost certainly." I think that's how most people feel too. Hill got the moral victory that day and a Championship too when history is examined. That's what matters.
The British press had it out for Schumacher ever since that day. The newspapers the next day were quite something.
They were already giving Schumacher a hard time the minute he arrived in F1.

Senna would have done the same as Michael in that situation. I’m sure Schumacher felt he’d been treated unfairly earlier that year with the race bans and disqualifications such as Spa. Additionally, Mansell showed just how fast that Williams was by the end of the year after they had made the handling more consistent.
Michael/Benetton treated unfairly??? Illegal launch control. Illegal traction control. Illegal refuelling rig?
@@jaidanknone of which were Schumacher’s fault? And in the interest of fairness, only the fuel rig was a proven infringement. The launch control was clearly not being used when looking at how poor some of Schumacher’s starts were and the so called TC was actually a type of early engine mapping which a number of teams had been working on to improve drivability after TC was banned.

I'm a fan of Damon Hill, my favorite English driver.. he overcame the Depression after losing his father Graham Hill.. and he's the age of my two ex-girlfriends Edimara and Cristhiane who I loved very much and deserved to be Formula 1 world champion in 1994 if it weren't for Michael Schumacher's cheating in Australia... Damon Hill was supposed to be three world champions in a row... including the 1996 title ..🥇🏆
Suzuka '94, Hungary '97 and Spa '98 were his greatest races in my opinion.

Honestly, I can understand the point of winning any competition through cheating. You cannot lie to yourself; you know you've cheated to win; what honor and joy is there in that?

Schumacher was actually very dominant that season, finished every race in 1st or 2nd place. One should note that Schumacher was DQ from 2 races and banned from another 2 (not due to technically his fault - see Belgian GP) so there shouldn't really be any conversation about who deserved 94 title more. In addition - 90s was the era when far more dangerous and reckless moves (Suzuka 90) weren't punished at all, totally different times that shouldn't be judged by todays standards. And I am not even MSC fan....

You have to understand that allthough F1 was created by the French for Italian manufacturers, all WDC's belong to the British and if a foreigner gets one it is robbed from the British, sometimes even by putting an non-Brit in a rocket ship anyone could win with.

i always liked Damon for his fair and gentleman like attitude. But That season was Michaels and he was still a contender only because of FIA dsq Schumacher so often

And this is why - to this day, and until the day I leave this world - Damon Hill will always be the F1 driver I respect and like the most. A true gentleman at heart, and so perfectly, humanly flawed, he is so different than dominating automatons such as Schumacher and Verstappen. To me, the 1994 WDC belongs to Damon. Oh, and that helmet? No other racing helmet comes even close to the subdued elegance and instant recognition that the white rudders on dark blue background design brings.

Damon literally drove Villeneuve off the track to protect his 1997 lead in Hungary. Even 'gentleman' do silly things when something big is at stake. Hill was no saint himself sometimes.
Wow 😂 There’s some really bitter individuals on here this evening. 😂 Damon was probably asked by the network to do the article, don’t get so worked up about it. He doesn’t come across as angry or bitter in any way he’s just telling the story of the race, during a year of incredible sadness and immense pressure.
