  • Our next episode of TIYL goes to the fast and furious world of Formula 1 which turns 70 this year. The person in question for this big red book tribute was a very late bloomer he started his career in F1 in 1993 partnering Alain Prost driving the FW15C an evolution of the legendary FW14B whilst the likes of Hamilton, Button, Norris, Mad Max and Russell were barely born, Williams were serial title contenders, Alfa Romeo was known as Sauber and Mercedes AMG was known as Tyrrell. This person really came of age in 1994 winning the respect of many fans in the UK with the way he pulled the Williams team back from the tragedy of the death Aryton Senna at Imola. Nowadays he's a pundit of Sky Sports F1 enjoy everyone as Michael Aspel with a bit of help from the voice of motorsport Murray Walker springs the big red book on the 1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill OBE.

    Just a genuine person who was still able to come out on top, thus proving that good guys can finish first. Excellent story.

    Close to 30 years ago I met Damon Hill at a sports centre . He was god father to a young girl who was sharing a birthday party with my son . Both kids were about 4 years old . Damon was very much off duty but could not have been more charming.
    And please read his book “ Watching the wheels”. A terrific book , I could hardly put it down.

    Damon is a very humble person. I had the privilesge to spend a few days with him during a promotion tour in Bulgaria.
    He was driving me from Sofia to Plovdiv and back and his wife on the back seat. The whole ride was in a Convoi with at least 12 Cars and Police Escort. Great Memory from the Rothmans/Williams time.

      One thing about Damon he is very self deprecating if you watch the Last Teammate documentary on Senna's death he even said that it was an opportunity of a lifetime to be a test driver let alone full time driver. Also he even admitted that he was in the title fight in 94 by tragic default via Senna's death

    thanks for the video
    in his autobiography Hill say that it's how his carreer should have ended.
    all his frends, family colleages who congratulate him at the end of his good 1998 season
    As he say himself in 1999 something inside of him disappear, and he go through the season as a ghost
    still my favority driver even 25 years after his title

      These types of programmes were cringe even at the time. But like you mention, in those days, it wasn’t so easy to find out about people’s lives by any other means so programmes like this were popular for that reason.

    • @alexlazebat839
      @alexlazebat839 Před 3 lety +4

      @@kevinprior3549 considering that with Arrows he could of won in Hungary and in 1999 San Marino 4th was his best after Eddie Irvine and Heinz Harald Frenzten both retired and in F1 racing there was an article saying how drivers stayed longer than they should of done and Damon Hill was on there. I don't agree with that because 1998 was very good for him and 1999 was looking better but it wasn't and he wasn't really motivated after France where he was over 107% and trailed around the back whilst his team mate won. Plus he got a free drum kit out of Yamaha :)
