I don’t know why, but when Hill’s sincere “thank you!” mixed with the reaction of the crowd, I got tears in my eyes lol. This is how a exemplary champion handles a win.
Did Schumaker rob him of a title?
Damon Hill is seriously underated. He was up there and beating Senna and Schumacher. His competitors were the F1 gods.
Same goes for your late Dad Graham. Both wonderful drivers, both against the world's best.
I'd argue his performance in the Arrows in 1997 Hungarian GP was his best ever drive inspite of him not winning in the end
@@kevinprior3549 oh yeah i remember now he was always great at hungry
He's not Schumacher, he's Schumacheater.
In Damon's Twitter: written "Dick Dastardly Dad". ^0^
@@pikachu8508 and Senna didn't cheat? 🤔
As a brazilian, like many others here, we like Hill, a lot! I cheered for him in 94 (we know what Schumacher did in Australia) and got really happy when he won in 96!!
Oo... Im really intrigued... Any special reasons why hill is popular in Brasil?
@@511dydy bc he was on sennas team
@@511dydy because they want to protect Senna's honor
11 years down the line, Damon's comments about the atmosphere in Formula 1 have never been more true.
Edit: Despite all of the changes, this still rings true.
It's clear from this video that even in the days "when F1 was F1", very similar issues affected the sport.
Crack? Is that what your smoking ?
I thought it was getting better actually.
I’d say it’s really good now
@@NotATryHard7 Just here in 2020 to see how well the comments have aged :)
Graham and Damon... Love from Germany...... Great Drivers, Great People, Great Champions...
It’s not easy, in fact near impossible for a son to follow a legend, however, Damon did it.
So did Jacques Villeneuve and Mick Schumacher will follow this path.
@@Kiki_the_real let's see if mick will win a championship... , although he is surely a good driver for now, had a nice run in 2021
@@Kiki_the_real how’d that turn out for mick
I was a member of the P1 club when Damon was a Director of it. I met Damon many times and he is a very likeable down to earth person. The club worked really well and drove many great cars. I cannot say a bad word about the club or Damon ... all good.
Matthew Throup was it worth it tho? 12k a year is a hell of a lot of money
@@adventure_F0x its a big sum of money sure but if youre making like 70k+ a year like some people do its not even that bad if you think about it, but it all depends if you think the experience is worth 12k really.
Garf2O nah even on 70k that’s a lot of money, maybe 170k or more
@@adventure_F0x i think 170k is a bit overkill, maybe we should settle near the middle and say you would need about 120k+ a year for it not to be such a big deal
Garf2O even at 120k that’s still 10% if you’re income annually which I’d saw is quite a lot
Damon Hill- “I didn’t read newspapers, I didn’t watch races for five or six years. For most of the noughties I was detached from everything,” he recalls, quietly.
“In about 2003 I sought help. Therapy is about learning to express yourself, what you’re feeling. Now I have moments of anxiety but nothing like it was.
What most people don't know is that Damon Hill has a better win to races contested ratio than Alonso. Now considering that Damon only started racing in F1 in his mid 30's, and faced Michael Schumacher in his prime, spent his last 3 seasons racing uncompetitive cars (Arrows and Jordan), that makes his achievements all the more amazing.
Shame Damon wasted years trying to race motorcycles. He should have debuted in the mid 80's in F1
Oh, and he would have outdriven Villenueve in '97 had he stayed
why do you say he would´ve outdriven villeneuve in 97 under those circunstances?
Racing motorbikes is never a waste of time
Yet would get destroyed by Alonso if they raced against each other in their prime
If im correct you write this comment in 2012 where Alonso make the most decent performance in F1 history. Nobody make perfect season like that, never. Both is a good driver but this compare just stupid.
31 is closer to 30 than than mid 30s with a first win the year later
Only seen Hill in F1 before this interview... he seems like a nice dude actually.
He sure is. One of the last world champions we can truly look up to. After his father's death, he had to work his way up from nothing to an F1 world championship.
I remember watching Hungary in 97 and so disappointed he didn't win in the Arrows.
After seeing this I am no longer sure that the actor in the Machinist was a skinny Christian Bale...
"They don't make 'em like this nowadays..." A true gentleman racer, as was his father!
I´m german and ..I love him, great person. !!
@ off track they did get on OK. on track they were fierce rivals. The British press made Schuey out to be the bad guy.
After Senna died, Hill was my favourite, such a talented pilot and a great gentleman. Never watched a F1 race after he retired.
Jeremy actually started a legit contest here between F1 drivers of different generations including Schumacher before he was paralysed
The eventual list of F1 drivers on Top Gear was impressive.
@@spikespa5208 Yeah and the results are pretty interesting with Vettel having the fastest dry lap and Hamilton having the fastest wet lap.
Gergely's Technic Models I thought Ricciardo had the fastest dry time?
@@RandomGuy-dw7hf You might be right. I remember Vettel set the fastest time but maybe Ricviardo beat it later.
A real class act, Mr. Hill...well done!
Very nice guy, always liked him! And supported him when he was racing. So down to earth and respectful.
Damon should be a double world champion. He was robbed at Adelaide.
I dont watch F1. Did Schumaker cheat,
@@sukhdevr3489 yes, Schumacher was a great driver but a bad champion
The only reason why he even got a run at the 94 championship was because the FIA suspended Schumacher from races to keep the season interesting.
Schumacher was robbed of two entire races that year. And you have to be somewhat of a dickhead to rise as high as Michael
@@richard_nj Michael?
I would keep typing “ But I’ve got to stop because I’ve got a lump in my throat”
Damon Hill - thoroughly nice bloke and ACE driver.
Damon is such a cool, down-to-earth guy.
A Gentleman like his dad, and a bloody good driver to boot !
One of the nice guys of F1.
yea, besides Lewis Hamilton... uhhhm, NO! LOL
A true champion.honest and humble.
I watched all the races in F1 featuring Damon Hill . I read somewhere that Charlie Whiting said that Damon was one of the most intelligent people he had met in F1 . Damon is without doubt an extremely under rated driver , and seeing how he had an absolute legend of a father I can only imagine the pressure to perform. And that he did . He was probably the opposite of his father Graham Hill in the sense he was very camera shy and not comfortable in interviews . What he personified was a very strong sense of sportsmanship and humility that is not entirely common in F1 . He will not be forgotten and neither will Adelaide 94 😂
とても素敵な男 Thank you Hill-san and top gear.
I LOVED the look on his face as he was approaching hammerhead LOL
i agree 100% with you on that. this is one of the few that i watched with out forwarding to the lap.
I guess his strange new racing line is now, the new racing line lol. Great seeing him again and as always he's a very humble man!
It would be cool if Williams could call Hill and Mansell to take some laps together, just for nostalgia of old school F1.
Mansell raved about Hill as a test driver and put his case to Frank.
Then Hill went on to beat Prost in Equal equipment.
***** It doesn't get any luckier than Prost, Mansell retiring from the sport and losing Senna too early. Senna would have won 94,95,96,97 had he stayed with Williams. We know that from how his Number 2 performed.
Schumacher's luck ran out only when his privilege ran out.
***** Schumacher was lucky that Prost and Mansell retired is what I meant. There was no talent let after Senna died
It would have been cooler. Had Williams, kept Mansell' & Hill as teammates. For the 95,96 &97 seasons.
So Jeremy has a duct blowing cool air on him and Damon gets to sweat under the lights.
Yeah WTF?! :-) .
That's what that is. Thanks.
I recall him driving a Renault 11 like a lunatic, it was amazing 🤩
I'm amazed Hill still speaks to Sir Frank Williams after what happened towards end of 1996 when Hill was dropped before 1997 season.
By laughing how shit it is
Nice guy, never recieved the credit he deseved for becoming F1 world champion....
@LudVan 76 I could tell from his wiki page about how much he cheated. Still sad to see him not able to speak now though
@LudVan 76 Really? He's not able to speak at all. Imagine that.
@@sukhdevr3489 I can only assume the original comment was about schumi, but these takes I'd rate as some of the most brain dead I've seen
@@Retr0Static Yeah it was about him. Which take? That the other guy has no sympathy for him? His condition right now is so sad.
Damon is always a gent. Classy guy.
From test driver into a World Champion...it's a fantastic achievement, and also noticed that Damon almost be world champion in 1994, before regained his composure in 1996, after a great season battle with his young Canadian teammate and future world champion Jacques Villeneuve
He's a proper racing driver! Great guy
Damon Hill always reminds me of Eric Bana.
And a little of Christian Bale I think
I saw some overtaking in Formula 1 once...1972 I think....maybe in July
True gentleman
They need to get Damon back on to try again!
"He's got his father's eyes" is certainly true here!
I had dinner with Damon when I was a very small boy. I believe Colin Chapman, and Graham were there on the adults table. I remember nothing but playing in the grounds of the house.
Un ídolo Damon Hill !! 👏👋👀👍
Damon's WDC was one of the most evocative stories in all of motorsport; the similarities to his and his father Grahams second are astonishing. Both were teammates to the driver universally considered the best. Neither was considered by the pundits to have an abundance of natural talent. Both took over a shattered and demoralized team. Many don't know this but when Graham had his terrible accident, his instrument rating wasn't current and thus the insurance didn't pay off the many claims against the estate. His poor wife Bette had to sell Grahams trophies to keep the family going. Damon grew up in genteel poverty and worked as a motorcycle messenger. He entered F1 at a late age (30s I think) and held his own against greats like Senna and Schumacher. When Damon won that evocative Championship he did more than restore the family fortune. He restored the family honor.
similarly with mansell that was his year
Love Damon...❤
Damon Hill great champion!!!!!
real sportsman and a nice guy :-)
I miss his dad... and I'm so proud of Damon to make his father very very proud of him.. Damon had to deal with competitors who would sacrifice cars to take him out..
My absolute hero growing up. I'm 32 and I still think he's pretty awesome. Was this interview from 2005? Because he mentions Indy.
Yes
Great piloto.
ive been looking for this interview for ages
Really?

The different between this era and Schumacher era and before is character.. I like back then because most of the F1 driver were crazy
brilliant.
Awesome guy !!!!!!!
One of the fastest lap specialists.. He was only bested by Mika, who to me could even today extract the quickest lap on track given an equal car.. The guy could feather a car around like no other..
WORLD CHAMP....YOU CAN NEVER TAKE THAT AWAY !
Watching this in April 2020, indeed no F1 going on now.
Been watching top gear over and over and yet never seen this episode
Iirc, this is the episode where Jeremy reviewed the TVR Sagaris.
@kaur55
Is the 2005 American GP, when Michlen announced that there tires have a problem and ar not save, so in race day, all the teams with Michlen tires, made there warm up lap and then entered into the pits, instead of lining on the grid. Only Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi started that race, they were using Bridgstone.
He seems to be a great guy… I enjoy his contributions on sky
From NL. I remember his name from the Rollercoaster tycoon 1 go kart easter egg! Nice vid
Jasper Langes YES! Same here, I’d always use that name, and not Michael Schumacher, because the latter was too hard to remember! Didn’t think anyone else here would’ve known about a Roller Coaster Tycoon cheat haha
Roddy Dykes haha my thoughts the same when I read your post. Haha yeah Schumacher was too long for me to.
Damon Hill Legend.
Damon and his father Graham were great drivers, but they were both eclipsed by Graham's almost forgotten team mate at Lotus in the 60s, sheep farmer and racing driver Jim Clark.
Top Lap, Top Driver and Top Bloke!!!
5:19 "That's a rubbish start" Aww common :(" ... LOLLL
..i dont know him that well, just have seen some interviews on tv. but he always seemed to be a fine person. and i still feel very sorry for him, that he was to drive in the schumachers prime. schumacher is for sure one of the greates racers ever. competitive to the bone. but many many times he just made us, the german f1 fans, feel ashamed about what he was doing on the race track.he did everything to win a race.often went to far.damon on the other hand, was always a gentlemen..
Seem liked Damon was just having a laugh since it wasn't a competition between drivers at the time, I'm sure if he buckled down he could get that time down a lot faster.
It would have been good if Jeremy pointed at the f1 board and asked him where he thinks he came.
To the pair of '60-born RP-speaking 'This Is Your Life' guests of Michael Aspel - love and respects!
grate driver :)
Damon seems like a good bloke.
A Legend at F1 one of the fastest drivers ever to race. The skill to drive those cars is amazing.
Are we talking about the Arrow F1 or that Suzuki on Top Gear??? ;^)
This is a couple of years old. Since then several drivers have beaten that time in the Lacetti, including the Stig by 1.9 seconds.
old school...
1:03 2005 US GP is basically real life Gran Turismo endurance race.
F1 was never the same when Damon left, I was gutted. I was 8.
My favorite!!! I love this guy so much better than Fernandito....
5:49... what a brilliant look...
what a gent
After watching Ricciardo's lap in this car have anyone noticed despite it being the "same car" they have made changes to the car... eg. the passenger seat here is standard, while the "latest" one is a racing seat and a new roll cage as well... all these could be weight saving...
den525 probably safety regulations
In another universe Hill won the '94 championship which gave him the confidence and drive to win in '95 and '96 which meant Williams kept him and he beat Jacques again in '97.
top man Daman
The lap didn’t look that bad. Amazing that Ricciardo found over 4 seconds on it
This man should have easily been a double world champion in 94 as well as 96! Legend
Imagine him and the “stig” being Schumi sitting side by side to prove he wasn’t the stig
That's how i driver everyday to work.
Damn i need to get a shot on Top Gear :P
Always liked Damon. Not the greatest driver ever and he knew it. But he fought his way up the hard way following the death of his father (who wasn't insured and so the family were left with very little) and made the very best of his ability. Certainly capable of being very quick, but made too many mistakes to be considered truly top drawer. It was hard to accept that, being a fan! I think my biggest single disappointment in watching F1, other than Mansell in '86, was Hungary '97. Hill was inspired that day and had that one tiny part failed a lap later, he'd have won comfortably.
Some say it was all about the great Williams cars and that Hill was just lucky, but neither Coulthard nor Frentzen managed to win more than one race in them.
For those of you griping about Hill being the worst of the F1 drivers in the Suzuki, bear in mind that all the others were active F1 drivers. Even Mansell was still racing at the time he did his lap in the GP Masters series. Damon, by comparison, admitted he hadn't been in a race car since his retirement six years before.
1 could argue that if hill wasnt fired, williams would of won more easily in 97, newey would of been there
Damon Hill N1
i guess its the lights..and over the years he must have developed a seriously well adjusted heat conductivity system internally, since things can get extremely hot inside those F1 cockpits!!
Williams tested and intended to run a fully automatic gearbox back in 1993, but the FIA banned all drivers aids (TC/auto gearboxes/ABS/active suspension etc) for 1994 meaning it never actually raced. Makes you wonder what is possible now if the rules weren't so tight!
The last gentleman champion, what a wonderful guy Damon is. F1 unfortunately is a sport where you have to bend the rules and be a bit ruthless if you want the championship.
"The last gentleman champion"
That's a bit harsh on Mika Hakkinen.
And Jenson Button
he looks like a really nice guy
you literally never see damon an christian bale in the same room
Damon Hill for FIA President
Keep in mind Damon didn't even START in F1 till he was 31! Could not even do that today let alone win a championship. Great racer, presenter and human.
Yes, he was, maybe not the most impressive overtakes but his moves certainly were effective.
Bloody hell, he reminds me of Graham here.
