That was epic, more of this please….he was proper going for it too
Anything less would be disrespectful to such a car!
By the looks of it They were all going for it😂
@@cdb6010 It looked more like a rental go-kart race, zero fucks given about cars value. Respect.
just as he catches the cars in front the video stops..
Yet he was a bit pedestrian the year before racing his Dads ‘63 GTO.
It really takes some balls to go that hard in a car worth that much. Props to Damon and the owner for having that courage.
As long as they have the original chassis documents, they can be re- built again and again if they crash. Otherwise, these old cars would stay in museums.
@@saymyname218it’s still take some big balls to drive and let drive a car worth millions 🏁
Once you are in the "zone" you forget about the car and just focus, shut the world out and hunt the other competitors....it's a great feeling!
Damon Hill is a legend like his father...great driving in an iconic Ferrari 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍
100% agreement 👍
Impeccable heel toe work, and even a couple of double clutches when he knew the revs weren’t quite gonna line up with just the one blip. Gotta love that Dog Leg 5 speed too!
That's right, you'd think he's been racing it for a while!!!
He did years of f3 and f3000 when they used manual h pattern gearboxes
once the AC Cobra whips past, you can feel Damon Hill move into Mission Mode... every gear change and evry move shifts into a higher level. Wondefrul stuff.
He was not quite fast enough to get past that lime-green GTO until they were both forced off the line by the dive-bombing Cobra.
@@Ficon looked not like a lack of speed but more like a want not to crash. He had to back down multiple times as the guy in the lime green car moved to block (a tactic that works until the other driver doesn't back off, kind of douchy for an exhibition race with these classics)
@@perkristoffersson4153 Pretty evenly matched on the straights but yeah, I agree, he was being pretty ginger under braking, as one should be considering what a GTO costs. I'm surprised the racing is as close and aggressive as it is anyway.
He retired from the race after _he downshifted from 4th to 1st accidentally..._
@@jcgabriel1569 Sounds about what I expected from their complete lack of awareness of their surroundings.
You can see Damon trying different gears at different points, occasionally short shifting and 'learning' the car on the fly...great to watch
That's right, and by minute seven he's spot on, knows exactly what where and when !!!
Nail biting watching let alone racing, with such beautiful and valuable classics! Wonderful to see, thank you.
You guys are so right. F1 can't compete with the pure racing from yesteryear on displayed here.
I don’t know who owns this car but thanks for letting Damon race it fantastic 👍
Tony Mason? He seems to lend his £14 million toy to everyone!
Great footage - thanks.
@@dieselfan7406 I think you mean Nick Mason... It's his car...
@@jcgabriel1569 Thanks! Memory not as it was...
@@zachtan Yeah... that would be him.
@@zachtan Yes. He owns (he still do) own a 250 GTO. Bought it in the 1970s...
Those eyes in the mirror have a look of flat out determination. That's Damon alright.
A 50-million-dollar car treated like it´s meant to be. Well done!
True, so much money, so close... it's no my money but my heart was sick worried!
granted, they weren't 50M back in 1999 when this was filmed, wonder what they were worth back then.
@@Poorschedriver About 18K new, sub 10K in the 70s and about 7 million around 1999.
@@ptinvite7942 watching him revving and shoving gears in like it's a ford transit is both heart breaking and heart warming at the same time!
Nick Mason said he bought his 250 in the 1970's for £35,000. People told him he was crazy and he thought so too. Now it's worth about £40M and people think he is the Warren Buffet of automobiles!
The most impressive aspect of this for me is Damon's speed while treating the car and engine quite gently. He gave other cars room, used remarkably smooth brake and steering inputs, changed gear slowly (not banging them in) and stayed well below the rev limit. He also used higher gears than he might have otherwise done, all giving the car a bit of sympathy. Going that fast while caring for the car like that shows skill, experience and a well-controlled ego.
Well, he would retire when he downshifted from 4th to 1st, and sent the car into the gravel trap...
Agreed, truly amazing. To completely understand where 99.9% is and then drive at 95%. Racing in F1 and Moto GP keeps getting faster and more boring. At least Moto 3 is still exciting. 10% slower and 90% more entertaining.
Much respect to Damon…he is a gentleman and old school quiet racer. What he achieved in racing was brilliant given he started so late.
Look at the company of the grid!! 💰💰
Damon still has it! The Ferrari doing its thing. As it was meant to be. 👏🏻
one of the coolest videos i've seen in a while. felt like i was driving the car, and you can really feel the power in the sound and him slamming the shifter into gear.
this might be one of the last times we see an original GTO driven like this, considering today's value. what a machine
Great content! A shame there wasn't a couple more laps, it would have been great seeing him battle the next couple of cars he had just caught
He would eventually retire after accidentally downshifting from 4th to 1st...
@@jcgabriel1569 Ouch… that must’ve hurt, especially on the ears!
@@TaikaJamppa and the bill...
@@Buddybutch Oh yeah, that too. 😱
@@TaikaJamppa Well, the engine survived. The footage I have seen showed that the wrong downshift sent him into the gravel trap. He then hooked it back to 1st and tried to move out but the car is beached...
In short, the engine didn't break, he retired because the car got stuck in the gravel trap.
Wow! To race such a valuable classic like that .. in your 60's ... heart of the mouth stuff, that was brilliant! Thanks for the upload, excellent. Great to see Damon behind the wheel again, legend!
Amazing onboard footage!
Just fantastic viewing. Chills down my spine listening to that engine and watching the precision gear changes and control.
Watching that Cobra go by gave me a new appreciation for what Shelby accomplished back in the day.
In period, the 250's usually got the better of the Cobra's despite the large engine discrepancy - 3 litre vs 4.7 litre
Yes putting an engine not built by him into a car not built buy him, genius.
Well, that Cobra actually qualified faster than Damon Hill in the GTO, only that it had a bad start off the line...
I don't care how fast they are, electric cars will never sound this great!
And they’re too heavy. And take way too long to charge. Useless in a race.
The future lies not with electric but ethanol . I run my Alfa Romeo Mito turbo on it , and it goes like a runaway train.
They will never sound great.
Electric cars are appliances on wheels! 🤮
@@craigyirush3492 They are working on getting the fast 10% - 80% charge closer to how long it takes to refuel a gas or diesel car or light truck. Right now anyone buying electric are early adopters and are willing to accept the down sides that comes with that.
Man, just imagine having Damon Hill bearing down on you, knowing for sure that he'll keep on pounding lap after lap of impeccable driving. What a thrill!
Well, the driver of that apple green GTO is none other than Sir Stirling Moss...
Just love the way it picks up in 5th, and those gear changes. First class!
Great video! They don’t joke, He was absolut happy we saw, class and no mistakes !
Superb driving, was a big fan during his formula one career, his lineage is unquestionable. Great video, omg the sound of that Ferrari heavenly.
Goodwood is far and away the most entertaining circuit racing extant imo.
So sez a Brit? I'll take Laguna Seca 😊
@@richardthelionheart5594 Each to their own. Plus check out the motorbike racing at Goodwood.
@@richardthelionheart5594
How can you compare?
@@richardthelionheart5594
And an IAmerican..
how can you compare?
I’ve been to Laguna Seca countless times since 1983 and have yet to go to GOODWOOD…
clearly the class of the world in terms of cars and drivers…
@@johngreenwood1972 But you never drove the corkscrew at Laguna Seca or MX'd at Carlsbad Raceway near SanDiego.
I LOVE seeing these cars bein properly driven how it was intended instead of sitting in a museum as a very expensive investment that everyone is too scared to drive it
Yeah Historics racing is always great! I’ve been to Laguna Seca for many races, but seeing this era of cars going wheel to wheel at redline is intoxicating. 🏁
Superb race! That green GTO holding him up is what we call a mobile chicane!
Not exactly. That's Stirling Moss in the car he should've driven in 1962 (if not for his massive crash at Goodwood in a Lotus). He, along with the second driver Tony Dron, actually qualified higher than Damon Hill in Nick Mason's GTO.
That was amazing! Thank you.
Great stuff. I want to see the rest of the race! You can see he’s being tentative over the first couple of laps (who wouldn’t be in a valuable antique!) but by lap 3 the old Damon starts coming back…😎
Fantastic event pity never got there this year best wishes to all who went ! Great footage guys.
Wow more of this kind of videos! Would be great to have the other GTO footage as well
Best video and soundtrack in a long while!
I just came for the engine sound of the Ferrari V12. Was NOT disappointed! He really put that vintage, very expensive, car through its paces. Glad to see one doing what it was designed for... instead of sitting in someone's collection gathering dust.
Thanks for this, made my day.
This is exactly why motor sports fans love an internal combustion engine .
What an emotional experience for the senses. Awesome 👌
That was enthralling. More please :)
Back in the day when the TT had a proper grid. Bring back the early days of the TT please!!!!!!
Race cars are meant to be raced no matter the price they have
In 90s price for race car like this not jump yet . But think about right now , they still race them car , but never seen proper race like this anymore , right ?
Only 39 of these cars were made
The last one sold in 2018 for $70 million
@@christianng9142 exactly
@@macsmith6216 I know that’s what makes it even more wonderful to see it run
I have heard some of the GTO's run today are replicas, or should I say exact reproductions, commissioned the by the owners of "real" GTO's while the original sits in a garage.
Any truth to that?
Gated 5 (I think). LOVE it. Thank you GRR
Damon pushing quiet hard.
Could not imagine others doing same.
Must be fantastic seeing such a battle live 😎👊💥
Well, Damon isn't the quickest driver in the grid. He's certainly going slower in the race than Derek Bell, John Surtees, Phil Hill, Jochen Neerpasch, and Jochen Mass who is absolutely flying in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray!
At the first Revival, Damon drove a GTO that had also been driven by his father.
I interviewed him for my media outlet while he was in the car . . .
Also it's left hand drive so massive props to Damon, love it
The most beautiful Italian gem with a British gentleman.
Perfect match.
🎩
Hill é um grande piloto! Sempre torcendo por ele!!!
most beautiful + best sounding car ever made. change my mind.
Finally Goodwood Production provides a proper Onboard ...With no useless cut-aways of wiggling arms, shots of what is behind, (as that matters not)..Just a pure illustration of how to get around a storied circuit in a magnificent racecar..
Amazing sound, amazing driving👍
WOW that is awesome, what a great sound track too
That’s the best racing I’ve seen for a long time
He’s still got that silky smooth touch
Wonderful. Really miss Jenson and Damon. True sportsmen! 😎
Man this brings back memories of hurling mk1 lotus Cortina s round here in 1981. Rog
So great to see this.
goin g into top gear - that large gear stick! Wonderful and thank you.
BEAUTIFUL!!!❤️❤️❤️🏎️🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🏎️🏎️🏎️
Le macchine d'una volta hanno un fascino eterno, che bellezza!
This event is so risky but so amazing!
That was awesome 😊
Can’t believe an old car like that is so fast, I know it’s a race car but still it’s impressive. Sounds fantastic too.
Go Go Go Damon!! Born racer!! To underated for me, he has speed & craft!!!
Still got it Damon
Excellent vid
Mad respect for these guys
What a responsibility! Nice driving Damon.
Looks like he was having a whole lot of fun.
The sound man, it's the sound!
Love the keyring !!
Wow that looks hard work. Damon’s proper old school he doesn’t left foot brake.
This car is exactly where it needs to be, on the track.
Champion's league drive - reminds me of Fernando overtakes the field, and the engine sound is awesome!!
Damon still has it hitting all the apexes great driver
Best sound ever and forever.
Astonishing Car , magnifica!
That sound, that manual! Whooaa.
Very interesting to watch how he uses different grips on the shifter for different changes so that his grip tends to steer the shifter into the right gate.
I can't even believe they do this. All that money on the track. It's glorious!
I found myself getting all emotional... Keep it together man... Keep it together...
What a fine Damonstration! :)
Serious racing skills!!
FANTASTIC !!
That’s some smooth shifting
Does anyone know what that big gauge on the center console, in front of the stick is? I’ve never seen one like that before. Is it the speedo?
So my mate said just nip to the chippie and next thing you know it's kicking off.... So me an Damo decide its chip shop race day.... Damo gives it the beans, a few curry sauce moments, chips in the bag..... Damo's a legend in our chippie..... Tips hat... 👌
The man can drive! Who is that young lad behind the wheel?! Also.. that sound.. bury me with that sound 😢❤
Bravo Damon👌🏽 that’s class!!!
Excellent! the need to be cautious around #7 let the pack ahead get away a bit. Quite savvy to take advantage of the Cobra coming through to finally get by.
Wonderful sounds. Only at Goodwood.
70 million at 70! Priceless!
loving the benson and hedges gloves, i do miss the hornets!
some very weird stereo effects in this one, besides that sick vid, love the sound
That sound!!!
Beautiful!
The man obviously still LOVES racing🤩
The net worth off all those cars on the grid and the owners let them drive them like this is a credit to the owners and the drivers driving them like they do , amazing 👍
You break it you buy it! Lol. Cool vid! 👍
You could see that it took a few laps to get used to the car and to the track. That last lap was mega.
I sure miss this lad around the paddock.
He's still got it!
