Hill: “I want to hear it”
Brundle: “It’s a beautiful sounding engine!”
Sky: “Let’s soak it in crappy music”
yep seems to be nearly always the case....no f music please !!😣
That's legacy media for you. There are dozens of new gen youtubers who would have done this better. Just give us 30 minutes of driving with no talking and no music.
@@MD-qm6gy the music would have been 10 times worse

That photo of Damon's christening with all those F1 legends is very special.
Jo Bonnier holds Damon in his arms
That would be the Hill family home 32 Parkside Mill Hill London, I suppose. I wish the council would re name the road "Graham Hill".
Graham was my boyhood F1 hero. Fiercely competitive on track, a party animal off duty, yet an English gentleman at other times.
I seem to remember a documentary. Betty Hill recalled a noisy party at the the Hill's home, two constables arrived following complaints. In short order the Police officers were handed glasses of beer by Graham and they stayed some time.
He is F1 royalty
@@russcattell955i I love listening to Graham Hill on the 1962 Nurburgring Shell documentary where Hermann Lang is driving the old W125 around it and where Graham is commentating casually almost dying going off on oil through a ditch and miraculessly ending up back on the track!
Also, Graham is the only driver ever to nail the Big 4 of Motorsports - WDC title (62&68), Indy 500 (66?), Monaco GP winner and Le Mans winner!
Hear me out, what about these two legends making a show about classic racing cars? I would watch all of the episodes
Yes, yes, and yes! Did I say yes? Yes!
YES!
Would happily watch all that. F1 In History. And they revisit all the cars as far back as they can up to present day.
omg, yes. all day every day and twice on saturdays. love it
Like Victory by Design with Alain de Cadenet, but F1-focused
I’d love to see something much more extensive than this, if possible. Totally understand these segments have to be short for the broadcasts, but a longer version when uploaded would be wonderful. Seeing these guys tell the stories of and then drive these incredible cars is always excellent.
Agreed. I could watch them all day, waxing philosophical about cars, drivers, historic races, etc…
absolutely would love this, some nice long videos on youtube would be fantastic
Sometimes they do upload extended versions of such segments a little time later. Would love to see the RAW Footage of their talk and the ride aswell
I hope sky listens to you.
I believe that these cars were all destroyed as you mentioned. Who built these examples. They look beautiful probably better than the original cars.
More of Martin and Damon reviewing classic F1 cars please. This was mega.
When Damon was talking bout his childhood and that picture and staying with Phil Hill . He must had one hell of a childhood b4 his dad was sadly taken
Man's had a hell of a life.
It was sad when Graham Hill died, but,he was a bit naughty ! His Aircraft was at the time illegal, and he wasn't fully qualified to fly in the prevailing conditions on the day.
@@normanfawley7379 Hence why the insurance wouldn't pay out and the Hill family ended up broke.
@@Zero_Ninety Gotcha !.He was a charismatic character, and much loved for it.Probably thought he could do what he want's.Aeroplanes bite fools, Graham got bit !
Seeing Damon in this old car makes me think of all the times he missed with his Dad. He was only 11 when his Dad died. Them being so like minded, I just can't help but think of all the times they missed together. It makes me sad to think about it.
15 or 16. Damon was born in 1960 and Graham was killed in a plane crash around 1975 or 76
@@eamonahern7495 Zweiback means twice baked :)
Mick is going through the same stuff. He said so himself in his dads documentary
@@eamonahern7495 I would have SWORN I heard him say he was 11 when his Dad died a few years back on Skype but I must be mistaken because I just looked it up and you're right, he was 15 when Graham died. He must have mentioned age 11 for something else and I've mixed it up somehow. Getting old is tough. 😉
@@rattusnorvegicus4380 you must be German. 😉 You're the only person who's pointed that out since I started using this name. It's a character from a very old Canadian show I watched as a kid. My profile picture is him, The Professor Zweiback Glockenspiel. He's a mad scientist with a mechanical butler. 😂 He's a bit crazy so I think that's where (Twice baked) comes from.
Thanks for noticing. 👍😁
Damon Hill the coolest guy in F1 history for me. The fact he started off racing motorcycles adds to his kudos. Often wondered if he could have been like the inimitable John Surtees.
Hear-hear. Look for the Sky video of him surfing between races. Just such a gent. One of my faves and deserving of WAY more respect.
@@beachcottage3740 He was a gent, I met him at Brands Hatch during a testing session in 1988. He kept a very low profile for some time, he then went out on track and blew all the modern riders away. I wondered who this person was as I watched him from the pits, he rode back took his helmet off and there he was. We a short conversation, what a cool guy he was. RIP the ultimate racing person of all time. I can’t see his record ever being beaten.
@Gillie Monger Nobody will ever beat John Surtees record, the man is a legend. The fact he won 6 TT titles adds to his Kudos.
@Gillie Monger There we’re much better TT racers SMB Hailwood comes to mind and JM. Although SMB had thoughts of following Surtees into F1 it never happened. Surtees did enjoy a good argument with his teams.
@Gillie Monger For a racer that’s doubly important
The reflection of the gauges behind the metal steering wheel arms is just sublime
Takes me back. I had that Ferrari model in my Scalectrix set along with a lotus.
I had the Airfix versions!
@@MidEngineering Me too, racing against a Cooper!
Lucky lucky boys. Always a joy to listen to Damon's tales from his childhood. Great piece this.
Great video, thank you! I can never quite believe how magnanimous Damon is about Michael Schumacher! Yes Schumacher was a fantastic driver, but he was extremely ruthless and he took Hill out in Adelaide to win a championship in what still looks like a calculated move. So much respect for Damon!
Yeah yeah, I'm sure none of the other great drivers ever did anything questionable like that.
@@_Jester_ Really?
The Adelaide incident wasn't deliberate.
Schumacher was a cheater though
I never liked Schumacher when he drove the Benneton, but I was a fan when he drove for Ferrari. Did his attitude change?
And again in Monaco!
Frankly, it does not get much better than this: two fantastic drivers -- and two of my all-time favorite motorsports legends -- chatting about F1 history and then taking those Ferraris out for a spin on the track for good measure (as good 'ol Martin would say). Top notch video! Thank you!!
Come on Ferrari and Sky. Please hook Damon up with a drive in an F1 car of his era. The F399 would be a great fit.
Would be funny to give him a go in one of the Schumi Bennetons that he lost out to
@@flare2000x he drove the 1994 Benetton at Goodwood last year
Just imagine showing your grandkids a photo of your christening with you surrounded by Bruce McLaren, Sterling Moss, Wolfgang von Trips, Jo Bonnier, Tony Brooks and great grandpappy, Graham Hill.
What a perfect memory that captured.
Was 'Sterling Moss' Stirling's brother Mully?
Thank you Mully, Tony Brooks was the one driver I could not identify.
4:20 really love that tachometer reflected on steering wheel
Saw this in the broadcast, this video was something else! Thank you Sky Sports F1 for providing these amazing pieces of content, they really make my race weekends
Insanely great with two lovely champs
I saw Martin there twice in 1983 when he was giving some young Brazilian guy called Senna a hard time in F3.
I grew up watching these gents race. Such a great dynamic between them, alongside some of the best looking Ferraris of all time. Wonderful
This video is one of the reasons I love F1, the history , the tragedy and though it all we race as one.
Damon really looked like he had realised a dream. Maybe during his childhood he dreamt about his father driving a Ferrari. Martin enjoyed this day too.
The first thing that comes to mind when F1 is the topic are the cars of the 60s. So beautiful, so cool
What a treat to watch my "peers" ( ie: in age only--lol) in these magnificent cars. Many thanks.
Super video guys. Stunning, beautiful cars. Great to see the Hill Helmet in a red Ferrari. Magic. Thanks for sharing. :)
I surely can't be the only one who clicks instantly when there's brundle in a new video
I just did exactly that.
Martin Brundle could make a video about frying an egg. I'd click and watch instantly.

@@MarcinHopa8 and the legacy will live on, Alex has exactly the same voice and style of commentating.
Brundle and Hill - THANK YOU! These guys are legendary! The cars are works of art, and the history - priceless!
Hill's helmet beats everything! And NO music please!
Oh man, that was sweet. Spectacular. One couldn’t have pried my hands off the steering wheel. Thumbs Up to whoever built those cars.
von Trips’s death surely must rank as one of if not THE most tragic of F1 fatalities in history.
To lose both his life and the F1 World Championship at the same time and with the spectators who died with him was truly awful 😢
Phil Hill was a deserving winner of the championship that year. He could have sown it up during the French GP, but had a spin when leading well, and lost his position. That win would have put him well ahead of von Trips in points. Regarding Monza, it was von Trips who made the fatal error of cutting off Jim Clark, causing the 2 cars to collide.
It was his 3rd and final big crash at Monza.
Every time I see a "classic" race car, I can't stop thinking about the courage and the talent of those drivers! I had the opportunity to admire a lot of F1 and sportcars at Ferrari Museum and when you look at them, you are first shocked by their beauty and then you realize how much these cars were dangerous! Small, lightweight, super powered and with no protection at all!
"They did it for the glory and the honor." Indeed, different times and different men.
Thank you for this brilliant video ! Its a pleasure to see these iconic cars and listen to these fantastic drivers. Many greetings from Germany !
Pero son replicas con motor y caja original ferrari, No existe ningun F1 156 todo original de la época.
God I love those old machines along with footage
Have driven a replica Sharknose (Hayabusa powered), massive respect for the early F1 drivers, terrifyingly fragile cars, but incredible to drive.
I was 13 in 61, the year I first got interested in F1.
John
Lovely piece from two legends of the sport 👏
Thank you very much for this splendid presentation of this old 1,5 ltr. model of the early 60's. The model really was very unique.
I had no idea Von Tripps started that track in Kerpen.
Ah! The 1.5 liter era of 1961 to 1965 might be my favorite era for F1. Yes, it ended around the time I was born, but I’ve studied that era extensively. Watching the Glover Trophy race at the Goodwood revival is always a treat.
I would love to see a modern formula along those lines; updated for safety, maybe 2000cc. Road racers in pure form.
They still look beautiful in 2021.
The cars look great as well
Von Trips didn't beleave that Jim Clark was so fast with his poor Climax and that he was just behind him, ready to overtake him before Parabolica curve.
he was slipstreaming the Ferrari. Jimmy was very lucky this day.
I'd love to see a retro-technical video, where someone goes in depth, showing us all the technical details of old racing cars like these... Or, even some closer shots of these cars, comparing the different engines or any other of the small differences between them.
Before viewing this video I knew nothing about the old shark-nose Ferrari cars (I'm in my mid 20's, for context), but now I'd like to learn more about them. They look so beautiful...
I began attending Formula One races in 1964 so I never saw one of these cars race but I did see ones not much more sophisticated run and these fellows weren't kidding when they said those drivers had guts! I actually saw Graham Hill race twice...his son looks a lot like his dad.
Except Graham never got old to go grey
3:52 "quite a lot"
Yeah Damon is surely thinking of the 94' one in that moment lol
'Dangerous times, brave lads'
Ni Martin Brundle ni Daimon Hill corrieron para Ferrari en F1; sin embargo, la admiración y el respeto que muestran por la marca y su historia es conmovedor.
A wonderful video- the joy that came through was so great to experience!
Damon god bless you..... Your dad was amazing and so are you..
This film is priceless, such beautiful shots and sounds of this icon (minus the horrible music) when before this I had pictures and old footage with bad sound. I now love this car even more!
One of the best looking vintage ferraris!
My interest in racing and cars in general was supercharged when I saw the cover of Road & Track for Jan. 1962 with Phil Hill in the cockpit of one of these. I was thrilled that there was an American World Champion. I still have that issue, hidden for years in a box of magazines in the garage!
I remember seeing a painting of that car on a track. Fantastic! Thank you.
I could not fathom doing 170mph in that. Amazing
The most beautiful car of that era imo.
I could watch these two do this all day.
Awesome stuff... More of that please!
Beautiful. This and the contemporary Lotus are the two cars I remember from my childhood.
Fantastic film, fantastic cars.
By the way, Damon, that “dress” you were put in as a baby, it’s call a christening gown.
Lovely couple of gents in stunning machines, with such intelligent conversation.
I would love to see these two in other old cars !! Great video !!
You can see how the air-intake at the front helps the car hug the corners. aerodynamics there and they tested to see which form of it works best. That is the foundation of modern F1!
Classy content. Nice story telling.
Love that generation F1 cars, lethal little rocketmobiles.
Nice! Two of my favorite drivers.
It's so interesting how the drivers have changed attitude towards each other the safer the sport gets. I highly doubt you'd see a whole bunch of drivers at another drivers kids christening these days.
Their off track comradery was so much stronger back then
Much less like a business and more like a club in those days.
@@cheesefruit200 More like a squadron of fighter pilots.
In those days there were drivers killed every year, so the drivers did not try stupid manoeuvres of the kind Hamilton and Verstappen do every race, the cars are so much safer now, that driver safety is not a consideration to some.
Very nicely put together film and presentation. I am sure I read recently in Gino Rancati's book about Ferrari that it wasn't just Von Trips connecting with Clark but his that his brakes had been leaking too ?
What a special experience
Two top men in top cars amazing.
Great performance , 2 F1 legends racing the Ferrari sharknose ...at the end , Hill , this is the first time for me in a Ferrari F1 , Brundle " i dind't notice that " ...gorcious !
Joy to watch, they looked like kids at Christmas!
Stunning cars need more videos like this on older cars
2 legends and 2 legendary cars
,,, I remember watching Yee Two back in 1997, a Back Marker took Martin out. Murray seemed incensed over it. Damon doing the Do with Schumacher & Co. BRILLIANT. Still looking Good. ,,, 👍👍👍
Lovely video lads. Thank you
Enzo Ferrari, after a disastrous 1962 season, ordered the cars cut up, so no original 156 exists. These are the only two replicas; one was built for a film about von Trips, the other by an enthusiast. Both are based on actual 156 engines and transmissions, built as close to the real ones as possible. They are both works of passion, and watching Martin and Damon drive them made my day complete
Great video beautiful car!
I’d be interested to know if these are the recreations Chris Rea paid to have built for a film, because famously Enzo had all the original ones scrapped.
These were recreated by Setford and Company for owner and enthusiast Jason Wright, using original engines and other original parts, and then the rest painstakingly recreated from drawings and photos.
Lenny I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who remembers Chris Rea building von Tripp’s car for his film and tribute to Taffy. These are a lifetime passion for Chris, as well.
Gòodwood wouldn't let them run as they said that recreations were not welcome, their loss!
@@johnschofield6675 What a shame that is.
I came in to ask that very question. Also, why did Enzo have them scrapped? Were they outside the rule book and he didn't want that to surface?
The Limit, a book by Michael Cannell, covers this period of motor racing in great detail, and is a very enjoyable read.
It sounds like Martin Brundle and Damon Hill had just been reading the same book.
Incidently, in 1961, Phil Hill had the French GP almost won, and stupidly spun, losing his large lead. That win would have secured the championship, rather than having it come down to a couple of points difference at Monza.
Yes I bought that book before making this piece. Is a fantastic account of the lives of Hill and von Trips 👌
"it's like a torpedo"😂😂
Great, thank you 👍🇫🇮
Awesome video 👍👍👍 looks like Graham Hill driving a Sharknose 😉 2 really sympathic drivers.
Damon, despite his obvious family history is such a humble, respectful man, his list of 'name drops' must be truly immense.
Absolutely stunning
Great to see proper, grown-up F1 veterans driving these iconic machines, rather than just more loudmouth CZcams kids
Hill finally driving a Ferrari 😍 Back in 1994 when Damon was battling Micheal, as a Ferrari fan I had chosen him as my favorite for the world title, being “the Cavallino” out of the game as usual. I was very happy for him in 1996. His (and his dad’s) helmet has always been one of my favorire if not my preferred one along Senna’s.
Wow Damon's helmet design is so iconic.
the same as his dad`s. London Rowing Club.
And Damons son Josh had a similar design, just a lighter blue before he gave up racing
Awesome I got to meet Phill Hill and spend the day with him at Roadamerica for a 50 years of Ferrari celebration awesome guy
Taffy was killed cause Jim Clark hit him on the side going into Parabollica.
But since Jim was a rising star and became a legend who died himself in 1968, that part was glossed over in history.
Just like how Mike Hawthorn out of the pits in Le Mans 1955, torpedoed Macklins car, which helplessly ended in front of Levegh who flew into the crowd killing 80+.
But Hawthorn died in 1959 in a public road crash so it was glossed over too.
Beautiful vintage car.
"7 world titles"
Hill dissapointedly: "Quite a lot..."
Would only have been six if he hadn’t cheated Damon to win his first.
Now if they rewrote the rulebook to switch to cars like this for 2022 F1 season i'd pay to watch that.
thats so cool to see!
Wonderful!
do more of this!!!!
Hill's head poking up above the rollover hoop eeek
Very sweet you guys 🏎️🏎️
Fantastic
Fun fact . Had Taffy not perished in that crash , he was booked for a flight to America after the race that crashed over Scotland . Like Pedro Rodrigues said when asked about the dangers of racing , "when God decides it is your time , it doesn't matter where you are ". There was no way VonTripps would see another day .
