Brundle joked about 'I hope I look as good as you at 92' but I'm very sure Murray was about 72 here as this show was late 90s early 00s I think. edit: it was 1997.
What you have to understand is that MW used to have a great friend in Graham Hill and here was his wee lad Damon in the paddock watching his dad go racing. Having watched someone grow up and form a bond with them, and then have to console them after their father’s death creates an amazing emotional bond. Years later Damon would actually race bikes - Murray’s truest love, and then he watched him move into GP cars. Having had his father’s name to trade on but no money meant that it fell to others to support him (emotionally not financially) in his quest to emulate his father in becoming F1 world champion, which he eventually did. So when he says “I have to stop because I have a lump in my throat” it was genuine.
The bit with his Mum had me crying reminding me of my own much missed Mum who passed recently from illness. - (make the most of life and special people in it) ❤
Do you know what... I think it's the very true meaning of "Wonderful" The reason is that you know that after a weekend away with F1.. He would probably get home to his wife with a "Hello love, it's wonderful to be home." light up the room and in the same way that when he arrived at the track and saw people like Martin.. You can see him saying "Hello Martin, wonderful to see you and be back at the track." He used that word a lot and Martin probably doesn't realise how much he uses the word that he picked up from Murray. Murray was such a wonderful all rounder who, to us fans, feel like we've lost a family member.
I met Murray about 15 years ago at a book signing in Perth, Western Australia...I knew I was standing in the presence of a living legend. I've missed him during his retirement and I will mourn him now...so long Murray...GO GO GO !
There are verry few people who achieved the Legend status within the F1 world not being a driver..Especially also being loved by litterally EVERYONE in the Paddock. Now that i think of it, i can only name 2. Prof Sid Watkins and Murray Walker. Both outstanding gentleman, absolute LEGENDS and charismatic..RIP Murray and Prof, you both more then deserved your place in history and our hearts!
It's so delightful to watch him speak and smile like that yet so sad to know that he is no longer in this world. RIP Murray Walker, your legacy as the voice of f1 will be remembered till the end of time.
Is it wrong for a grown man to be crying while watching this 2 weeks after the legendary voice of motorsport left us? He is one of the reasons I am interested in racing. Rest in peace my friend!
The voice of F1, sadly missed but wonderfully remembered. Murray and James Hunt the greatest commentary duo. Even better than Tony Grieg and Bill Lawry
Thank you for this memory. I was sad to hear of Murray Walker's passing and sorry when he stopped commentating F1. Canadian fans missed him when he retired. In 1978, while at work, there was a TV nearby but I could not see it. However I did hear Murray's enthusiastic commentary of Gilles Villeneuve winning the GP in his Ferrari. A Canadian winning the Canadian GP! It hasn't happened since and I think Murray was as excited as I was.
RIP MURRAY, A TRULY GREAT MAN, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN TO THE WORLD THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE. THOUGHTS GO TO HIS FAMILY AND CLOSE FRIENDS, "GOT TO STOP NOW, THERE IS A LUMP IN MY THROAT" (famous Murray quote)
This is so, so sad to watch. When he sees his mam, oh my God, that's so emotional. He lived till a good age too, what a true legend the man was and is.
A true gentleman and legend, you feel like you know him because he came out of the tv into your lounge and made it so entertaining, the only voice of motorsport RIP Murray you will be missed
RIP Sir Murray. You will be sorely missed. Never lucky enough to watch your masterpieces first-hand - however you ARE and WILL BE the voice of F1. Rest in peace
It's nice to look back at this: specifically for those who are not with us any more, not least Murray himself. Raymond Baxter (passed away September 2006), John Surtees (passed away in March 2017) and Sir Stirling Moss (passed away March 2020)
Rip Murray - thanks for the great childhood memories of u commentating on the motorcycle gp’s in the 80’s! Favourite Murray quote ‘if Kevin Schwantz doesn’t win this race, I’ll eat the hat I don’t normally wear!’ The absolute best of the best!
When u think of legendary British sports commentators... Murray Walker is without doubt one of them. John Motson, Barry Davies, Bill McLaren, Peter O'Sullivan, Ted Lowe, Brian Moore (ITV).
@@gazmundo1987 I think that's who he meant when he wrote 'Bill Murray'. I would add David Coleman and Ron Pickering who both managed to cover a variety of sports with a great deal of authority. Coleman was lampooned relentlessly by 'Spitting Image' late in his career when he was making more mistakes than made us comfortable but he still managed to make even rather tedious races/matches/events seem more exciting than they actually were.
RIP....Murray . You were awesome. And Noone will ever be a better race commentator. Phopars and all. Now Starring in the commented box in F1 Heaven.... James Hunt is glad you finally decided to join him. He's been missing you. And how great those calls would be . Rest well if they let you have any time off. Murray. You were always so damn funny.
As a young teenager when I saw my first formula race on television. I fell in love with Murray play by play. The expressions he used were just great. Murray because of you I fell in love with F1 and also follow IndyCar (Cart) . Now I have to stop as you said. " I have a lump in my throat".
MURRY WALKER....... ........GONE GONE GONE..... A master of his craft even though it seemed his head and heart appeared to go into a fanatical boxing match for control of his voice from the moment the flag dropped .... There is motor sport commentary...... .......and there is Murry Walker! Farewell.......
This is a beautiful and moving celebration of Murray’s life and career. Didn’t expect to see Murray’s mother involved, very emotional.
He died today aged 97. Murray was the voice of F1 and the greatest commentator that ever lived.

@@abuhamza1970 Thank you for this! Man, I just think the world of Murray Walker. I think Brundle has done a fabulous job carrying the torch.
Back in the day, this was the “peoples knighthood”.
From the days when BBC output was really top class.
RIP Great Man.
Yeah your spot on
What an absolute Master and Gentleman. So many memories. Sleep tight, Murray x

Sorry to hear that Paul, take care.
Watching Murray choke up with the message from his mother, done me...I will miss you Murray, may you Rest in Peace
RIP old friend, you'll be sorely missed.
His reaction to seeing his aged mother says it all...
True. I'm sure that - like most of us - he would have given up ALL that he had achieved in order to spend a few more years with her. RIP...
Only one word needed for Murray Walker: Legend!
