- Kathleen Lynch from the University of Cincinnati's Classics Department joins us to look at Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Here we visit the Acropolis in ancient Athens to see the Parthenon and other sights. NOTE: Uploads of parts 1 and 2 of this video were unfortunately cut-off suddenly at the end. The complete version combines both videos and the missing footage.

How are we doing? Please take a moment and share your thoughts on this brief survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/CAMLis... - Hry
Kathleen was responding to a pre-recorded video that Russell made (before knowing what she would comment on), which is why it seems like he is rushing past things. We won't make that mistake again!
Thanks for this clarification!! These are very interesting videos, I love them
If you speak to her just please tell her were grateful for her knowledge and work please.
you're right!!🤘🏻
You tried to trick us, but you failed.
no worries :)
-Walks a real Athens Agora archeologist through Assassin's Creed Odyssey
-Doesn't go into the Athens Agora
Ikr, such a missed opportunity
I genuinely don't know where they hire these producers from. It's like they are paid to do what exactly? Know anything about what they produce? Nope. Evidently just empty air.

There's a second video, this is just the first one. Hence the "part 1" in the title.
Stuff like this is amazing. We need more of historical community reacting to games like this!
czcams.com/video/GzjJ6gkGTxU/video.html
Yeah I hope they'll make a video of an archaeologist from Egypt reacting to Assassin's Creed Origins!
Nice name
Yea and historically accurate. Would pay big coin for highly detailed historical games

I remember when Odyssey came out, few weeks after that I had a holidays in Greece. We visited a museum in Athens which has many historical things from back then in ancient Greek architecture and folklore stuff. Everything I saw in Odyssey was there. They really made this game properly, they did their research for sure !!! As well we went to Delphi (my fav. location in greece hands down). The tour you can do in Odyssey in Delphi was like I was there for 2nd time for real ! The amount of detail they put into last 3 AC games is just mindblowing.
The lore is just as mind blowing, especially with the Isu.
Same as with RDR 2 , I visit forests and it's exactly like that.👍
There were other things that weren’t so good like female soldiers just to name one.

I know it isn't really an assassins creed game but i love it and it did took a lot of work people should stop bullying ubisoft

Props are really amazing, story is pretty cool, Cassandra and also many other characters are really worth getting to know. Then again gameplay is a bad joke of a repetetive crap with mindlessly lazy designed combat - scaled-enemies, action devoid of any player-skill based approach, difficulty means damage sponge - and have I mentioned the whole environment tries really hard to destroy any feel of any real exploration (i.e. getting rewarded for being observant and trying things out). So sad a combination... a modern one though! :D
@@martink2875 I haven't played Odyssey but I agree with you concerning Valhalla. Great graphics but the gameplay sucks, it is mainly kill kill kill. It is a pity for such wonderful work on other parts
@@RNHRK I've heard that Valhalla is different. But haven't tried it out myself as well. We'll both see I guess. And anyway, I am glad videos such as this come up. That's nice.

This needs to be a 5 hour video, Kathleen's commentary is amazing! So great to hear!!
Great video, however, it is frustrating how the player just keeps walking instead of focusing on what she is talking about. I thought they were just playing a video for her to react to but he is apparently controlling it?
he's like those journalists that get early access and butcher their way through
They were playing it, but it's a recording of them playing prior to talking to her so what she's watching IS a video but it's a video based on their earlier gameplay from what I've heard
@@TheFinalFarewell well that was a bad way to do it. Just stream the gameplay with her.
@@kzero1499 Agreed, it'd be a lot smoother that way. Hopefully that's what they'll do in the future

Wow, she is so impressive she really knows her stuff. And despite the minor errors, you gotta say that the people who make these games are absolutely amazing. They are modern day wizards. you can tell that a lot of blood sweat and tears have gone into making this masterpiece
You should look at assassins creed unity’s map. A recreation of late 1700’s Paris
@@2inches2hard I know, I've played it. I brought the game just after Notre dame cathedral burned down. And the detail is so amazing they should use the game to rebuild the cathedral
So much blood sweat and tears, they had to take everything AC:Origins did and copy paste it to Ancient Greece. So stunning. So brave.
But oh well, there's still Ghost of Tsushima: The game AC fans were asking for, but never got. Thanks Ubisoft.

@@dimeterchevaeros8480Take a break from the internet, you seem like you're about to cry...
Anyway time to get back to Odyssey :D
The world is the most consistently amazing thing in the assassins creed games.
It's always gorgeous.
Y'all remember when no one bothered to 3D scan the entire Notre Dame? But then Ubisoft said, "Hollup a minute we might need this." The games have varying degrees of quality but you can always expect them to take their time with the history.
And thank god they did
The incredible amount of research they put into AC series is the reason I LOVE the games! They are not the same as they used to be for "gaming" but the details are still WAOW.
heh, just said pretty much the same thing mate lol
I've recently finished AC Origins. My jaw dropped when I first saw Alexandria. It's amazing how they recreated ancient cities. I absolutely love the architecture. Shame the gameplay and ending sucked. I'm burnt out and won't touch Odyssey for a while but I'm looking forward to it more than Origins. Just wanted to play them in release order.
czcams.com/video/GzjJ6gkGTxU/video.html
Fr, the DETAILS. It's straight up insane. Ngl Ima buy all upcoming AC games just for the world design and details, its so good.
I've played though this game and loved it. I'm also a Grecophile at heart, so to hear this woman talk about the historical accuracy is amazing. Thank you, to you and her.
This is the level on detail and expertise I expect from all 'historian/archaeologists reacts' videos on CZcams!

@@smoothsat1 oh obviously
Origins Odyssey and Valhalla are historical masterpieces. If you games and history assassins creed is your series even the older games are historical masterpieces but the technology in the latest 3 games make them incredible especially Odyssey it's the most visually beautiful of the 3.
Kephallonia has a mountain sized statue of Zeus carved from stone, which legitimately implies people carved a mountain away. Odyssey is set during the height of the Peloponnesian War, yet apparently hoplites don’t know how to fight in phalanxes at the height of Ancient Greek military influence. Yes, some serious historical sites that are presented in Odyssey are done well, but so much historical work was done on a lot of those areas that I would hardly credit Ubisoft.
In the trailer for the first Assassin’s Creed, Altair uses a crossbow which was removed from the game because they found out after the trailer release that it was unlikely to have usage during that time period. Assassin’s Creed 3 had Redcoats forming firing lines and using known historical tactics to try and fight Connor, and also gave the player a mechanic to deal with that situation. These guys couldn’t be bothered with most of this depth, and that’s partially allowed due to the lack of written historical sources.
It looks amazing, sure, but historical masterpiece?
Doesn’t help that the story was atrociously boring.
@@aenearion5503 there aren't too many assassins that fight in phalanx. It's still a video game. The architecture all the way down to the pottery are correct. A greek archeologist reviewed the game and about creamed herself at the accuracy of everything. It's a historical masterpiece and the closest we may ever get to a time machine. These guys are putting in ridiculous amounts of research for a video game and that far overlooks them not adding a phalanx in an assassin game.
@@EddieHallslittlebrother The hoplites need to be the ones fighting in phalanx, not the Assassins. That was the primary fighting style of hoplites, who were the main fighting force of most Greek city states. The way they were armed and armoured revolved around fighting in a phalanx. Odyssey instead has huge hulking guys with little to no armour each wielding a mace that size of one's head in each hand which would have been far too unwieldy to actually use in combat.
Yes, lots of realism.
Yes, a lot of the architecture and the small details down to the pottery are correct, but essentially every AC game has had that level of detail, and I notice that you completely ignored the point I raised about a certain mountain sized statue which I'm sure is completely historical. Also the idea of something being a historical masterpiece yet avoiding historical truth about ancient societal norms that by modern standards would be abhorrent is laughable. Ancient Greece did have better sanitary conditions -for the most part- than Dark Ages Europe, but it also had widespread paedophilic acceptance, so much so that Ancient Greek poets would write about it. You can't eliminate inconvenience regarding history then say it is a historical masterpiece.
There are parts of Odyssey that are good, and there are areas where you can see they've put work in. But almost every triple AAA budget release of AC has this level of historical detail. I have no idea why you think it's a historical masterpiece compared to something like Assassin's Creed 2 or Black Flag, which have similar levels of depth.
As I said in my previous post, a lot of this research is widely spread, while as research for AC Unity likely came from hundreds of conflicting sources, and research for Black Flag would have been far more difficult to do than this, due to lack of site preservation and general confusion/mismanaged reporting of events happening in the area at the time.
Odyssey is based around a time period that has a few main written sources and lots of good site preservation for archeological sources.
@@EddieHallslittlebrother idk about u but i didnt make it through even half his book..... I don't think he realizes its a video game and its NOT actually suppose 2 be real kinda like it says at the start when you hit play..

Yeah I love it too, also bought the DLCs recently! Really feels like you're in ancient Greece when you're playing it, it's so cool! My dog is a stray from Greece and I sometimes show her my screen when I'm playing and she really loves staring at the dogs in the game, it's so cute! I always make jokes that she's thinking of her motherland when she stares at the screen lol
Imagine their surprise, someone paid millions to recreate something they study in books and rubbles for an entire life. I would have cried lol. Sad the AC franchise is still not in VR. I think she would have passed out from walking in acient Greece :P
It was the first AC game I played from start to finish and damn, it was great. I was surprised, seriously one of the *best* games I've played. It seems like the only people who dislike it are kids who spend too much time on CZcams listening to reviewers lmao. Regardless, it was amazing... especially exploring the world.
I love Odyssey! How they create the world, graphics, people. Just wow!!

Hardly underrated, one of the most acclaimed entries in the series (which is in itself acclaimed).
Btw I finished it like 3 weeks ago... and 'cause it was part of my daily life since Christmas... I really miss it. Fantastic, beautiful game. And I love the RPG elements. I really don't know how I'm going to play again the older entries... I'd really miss this "choice-based" gameplay...

I was q classics major and was also blown away by the visuals in this game. I loved that they had a tour feature outside the game. The scenery, including the water, was gorgeous. Unfortunately, Ubisoft let it all down with incessantly repeating the same quests over and over. After you have explored dozens of look alike tombs, conquered dozens of look alike forts, etc, it starts affecting your overall impression.

Odyssey is the game I've spent the most time in. Not quite sure how it happened, but it must have been like 250 hours or so. Crazy.
This was great. Is there a longer version?
I believe the columns in Greek architecture also gets wider as you go up so that when you're looking up at it from the bottom your vantage point makes the lines look straight
I'd watch her visit every place in this game and comment along. Love the insight!
3:47 I wonder if they would be willing to go back in and fix something like that. Should mention it to the devs
I especially like the normal villages and slums in the game, I feel like it got the accurate vibe correct. Kind of that shoddy construction that you see a lot today in 3rd world societies is also what was common in the ancient world

I absolutely am in love with this game!! Best AC in my opinion
Never noticed that first painting at 2:30 was of the Olympians fighting Gaia's Giants🤯
It's amazing how much research that goes into these games, yet in Valhalla they chose to go with fantasy vikings instead of historically accurate vikings.
To be fair, it's kinda hard to be accurate when it comes to vikings, but I hear what you're saying.
Assassin's Creed has never been 100% historically accurate in any game in the Series so I don't understand why people complain about them taking a slightly different direction with the Vikings. It's Assassin's Creed not History Geographic.
This game and Origins was such a beautiful world.
Amazing work of the developers!
Video games AND ancient history, its a win win.
Thanks for this wonderful guided tour! Looking at this technology I see a tool for the immersive exploration of history. Pair this with VR, correct all the facts (with the knowledge that is available today… will be expanded) & you’ve got yourself an Installation that could be licensed to museums, even universities & schools.
The giant statue was actually Athena Nike (victory) not Athena promachos (the word means "fighting in front line" not strategy before the war). Promachos statue of athena captures the move of throwing the spear, this statue was made after persian wars to signify the victory of Hellas
Been on the Acropolis, beautiful
All of the detail and history makes me want the game!
It just got a 60fps patch for ps5 and Xbox sx. Looks absolutely beautiful
Promachos (Athena or Αθηνά ) in Greek language means that fights in first line (Avant-garde) and i think not before the war or as strategist.
Such a visually stunning game
Those colored statues always startled me. Every time I noticed them close by I jumped like "Woah, what the...giant people!? Oh, no. Just those statues, again. Damn."
Also, does anyone remember those purplish lights that were emitted by some of the decorations? What were those? And what were they based on? I think they could only be found somewhere around the island(s) where you meet Kassandra's mother. Not sure.
This went exactly how I expected. "Wow, this is awesome! Yeah, this and that are out of place, or time, but otherwise much like I imagine." As someone with a history degree, I love just walking around Assasins creed game worlds. I know no videogame is true to life, but I love that I get to explore ancient cities in any way.
btw u can use the capture mode if u want to see something from any angle
The bit where he starts climbing up the pillar and she's like "Wow! That is.. that is? ... Interesting?" 😂 I'm dead
The year is exactly 430 BC, the second year of the Peloponnesian War, which we know by the fact that during the events of the game is when the Plague of Athens breaks out.
She could talk me through any game. Such a wealth of knowledge.
Great video!
Great comments by the lady. The guy was a painful experience instead.
I loved the setting, scenery, atmosphere and artwork - just beautiful. But I quit because of all the grinding and leveling.

I absolutely loved Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
Where can i see the full version of these?
You can tell she misses going there by her excitement :(
Can we have some field of view and an actual gamer in control? The camera angles are terrible.
Also, the photo mode and the eagle view are much better to look at the environment.
The level of research that must go into AC games must be incredible. As someone who has studied Greek Mythology, I loved the idea behind Odyssey, and the beauty of the landscape, rivals RDR2 for me. But the historical research the devs must have done to have recreated such a vast world is really incredible. It's a shame that the gameplay/missions, don't really live up to the same kind of standards as the environment. Same with Valhalla tbh. Missions are so "samey" very little has changed from game to game, except now it's more of a hack n slash than a stealth assassination game, sometimes I feel like the world's are too big, so much to see and do, but the missions all become similar after a while that it just doesn't seem worth the effort to complete
THIS IS SO INTERESTING OMG I LOVE HER

Great game, shame we didn’t see Ephesus and Halicarnassus on the Ionian coast and Syracuse in Sicily.
Promachos - Πρόμαχος means leader in battle, strategos - army's leader literally - general in front and co-warrior infront, "προ" does mean "before" but also mean "with" like "lead with us" not "lead way before us"'
Dude, i really wanna be an archeologist when the next two or three AC came out. it's so fun to know all that stuff!
