Correction, Ezio actually kept being a christian even after his knowledge of the Isu and the AoE. Not only he defends God when fighting Rodrigo Borgia during AC2 ending but the Brotherhood novel actually states he's a christian and anything in those novels that doesnt contradict the game is considered canon

Maybe, but when he defeated Robert of Sable, he said "this has nothing to do with him, I'm just the better fighter" to King Richard, who replied "you may not believe in him, but he believed in you" to no objection, which indicates he is an atheist. Again, this is just assumption, he could be an agnostic, but more likely to be atheist

@@jblazko882 nah, God is one. And they don't say Jesus or Yahweh or Allah or whatever name of God they would, so God is the same. Moreover, his only explanation is "I'm just the better fighter", not "it's my God, not yours", prove that he's believing only himself. Beside, Altair burning Al Mualim's corpse shows how he doesn't believe in Islam whatsoever (even tho he really means to prevent Al Mualim's return). If any, that shall be either atheist or agnostic (more likely the former)

    • @KasumiRINA
      @KasumiRINA Pƙed rokem +2

@@nomad1789 Altair not believing it was God's work but a matter of skill doesn't mean anything besides that. You remember Pulp Fiction? Jules was declaring that it was a miracle, Vega was skeptical about that one event... it doesn't mean he's an atheist or agnostic. Just that he doesn't believe in specific case of divine intervention... However, Altair, most likely IS atheistic in the end, as during Assassin's Creed 2 you collect codex pages and you see him being dismissive of all religions and being really scared of death, after which he doesn't believe in any continuation. He is also not shown being religious at any point, ESPECIALLY compared to very Catholic Ezio, delivering a requiem in Latin for his victims.
I can also point that for all his desire for knowledge, Altair didn't get it all until he died. Only Ezio gets that there's something more beyond what we see in Revelations, as he recognizes the player existing, and accepts our inability to know things beyond our understanding. It was very creepy and I loved it. I need to finish relaying AC2 and read the entirety of Altair's breakdown. Needs all codex pages but I stopped playing a year ago, coulnd't stand Venice fireworks counting last hours until 4:45, and hearing real explosions outside my window.
Anyway, remember the first game was released during Iraq war so a practicing Muslim would be risky for a playable character, I don't believe outside of France they would even dare to make a setting with Saracens as the good guys, though Crusaders are shown respectfully too, in Richard's case. They kept Altair's religion vague () to avoid any possible backlash from either side. AC2 onwards are braver games, as in, they're more open about characters convictions. I think Altair goes from Muslim (how he was brought up) to agnostic (events of AC1) to atheist (his later years by codex).
Now Bayek is another thing entirely, deeply religious pagan-polytheist, to the point he justifies hate crimes against Atenian heretics that didn't worship multiple gods.

altaïr was a citizen of the nizari state of assassins. it was located in a small part of the region that was colloquially known as “syria”, but the syrian state was not established until the 20th century.
ezio was florentine. italian unification did not happen until the mid 1800s.
connor’s nationality is iroquois, not american. connor being indigenous meant he never would’ve been granted U.S. citizenship.
adĂ©walĂ© would’ve been considered spanish because trinidad was a colony of the spanish empire (although it’s more likely that, because he was black and a former slave, he would’ve had no nationality)
shay was born in british new york and was an english citizen. his irish accent was due to his immigrant parentage and, as far as we know, he never visited ireland.
although ancient greeks were united by their common language and beliefs, greece was not unified until it was conquered by philip II and ruled by alexander the great. therefore, kassandra’s nationality was spartan.
basim lived in the abbasid caliphate. iraq didn’t become its own country until the 1900s.

    Hello.
    To be more precise :
Altair was a subject of the Abbasid Caliphate, capital city Bagdad in modern day Irak, in the XIIth century.
Enzio was a citizen of the Granduchy of Toscany.
Connor is born as British subject of New England colonies, he became US citizen only after the indépendance.
Edward Kenway is born after the Act of Union, so he was British, not welsh.
Adewale was living in the Spanish empire, Trinidad became British later in 1797 before the indépendance in 1962.
Bayek was a subject of the Ptolemaic Egypt, so the flag is wrong
Kassandra/Alexio was an Ancient Greek, the very concept of nationality was inexistant and the land politically divided into city-states, so Spartiate
    Ancient Greece.
Norse pagan religion has a name : AsatrĂč ! And the kingdom of Norway had a different flag

    • @nomad1789

Problem is, by association as if you say formality (like for census) doesn't really exist back there, and people aren't concerning about it (aside from crusades, which none of them really did even tho Altair did intervene in the Third Crusades and Ezio with the papacy). So, it's up for the people whether to believe it or not, and I say none of these assassins even have citizenship, considering they're all consisted of killing machine (Altair), dethroned prince (Ezio), tribesmen whose tribe isn't even recognized (Connor), criminal (Edward, Evie, Jacob), slave (Adewale) and orphan (Arno), all of whom are deemed outcasts in addition to their affiliation with the assassins, which makes me doubt they were even given citizenship, if ever existed. Therefore, religious affiliation didn't really matter aside from what they believe in

The nationalist movements in the 19th were something different, something in which even the masses were involved. A nobleman in 1500 talking abstractly about unification cannot bring to the conclusion that nationalism was a thing even before the 19th century. There was no concept of nation, at least not as we intend it today. A greek from Sparta might have considered himself as part of the greek heritage, but he had no loyalty towards "Greece": there was no Greece at the time. He lived in Sparta and was a spartan, therefore his loyalty was towards Sparta alone. There were times where Greek cities fought together against common enemies (like Persia), but it was no nationalism that pushed the soldiers foward, It was mostly necessity and a sentiment of "brotherhood" between greek cities.

Even without the whole Isu thing pretty much proving that all gods are.. let’s say “overrated”, the Creed specifically encourages its followers to constantly put their worldview and their belief system into question. To always be as open minded as possible, to never assume that the truth is a given absolute. This doesn’t mix very well with the kind of devotion required by religion. The Creed’s essential meaning is literally “Beware everyone who asks you to believe without question, and remember you’ll always be responsible for what you choose to do.”

His issues have more to do with the Church as an earthly institution, which is very fair for the 15th and 16th centuries.
If anything, he's probably lapsed Catholic. I mean, it's pretty difficult to avoid excommunication after his tustle with Pope Alexander VI.

It would be cool to see the Templars operating in secret as members of both empires, or even Rajputs and other Indian kingdoms, while the Assassins travel the whole subcontinent to stop their plans.
