In the US, I think we have a certain reverence around freedom of speech, especially in protecting performers, those that speak truth to power, etc. i don’t think it was purely a matter of cause and effect, so much as the context of the situation.
If this was just a disagreement among men, I’m onboard with your approach (talk shit, get hit). In this case, it was more of a sign of weakness because he didn’t have the self control.
I think all comedians know that words can come to blows. Chris is one of the greatest. He's surely been on the end of that before. He's probably didn't expect it in a place like the oscars tho. That said, he took it like a champ. Also, Will just did the Ali movie. He should really know how to throw a punch, you'd think.
