    They should stop all development on this software and produce nothing but tutorial videos on how to best use it for a while, pretty sure their userbase would increase tenfold if they took that approach. Or failing that hire someone to do it for them. There's tutorials on their youtube channel, but none of it seems to be in any sort of logical order that makes sense for a beginner, or the videos are 10+ years old on different versions.... its a shame, seems like the software has serious potential from what I've seen of it.

      I think its partially due to the fact that the software UI is absolutely shit and impossible to even explain. None of it makes any sense. UI/UX is nothing pilgway have even heard of. When you pick up a tool you've no idea if its going to eat a huge chunk out of your object, or do nothing. I find myself with the depth set to 0.01 % and its too much, and the next tool does next to nothing at 100%. Not to mention the appaling mess of paint objects and layers and all that bullshit. Its a sloppy mess of bullshit. Notice how the video does all the uv mapping and texturing with only one material. Want a model with many materials? Good fucking luck.

    The retopology is a strong reason to give it a shot. I'm also impressed by the VDM sampling tool. As far as I know in Zbrush you have to create the detail from scratch on a flat plane so any kind of unique bit you made on a character can't be "reused".

  • @mangonauts6464
    @mangonauts6464 Před 5 měsíci +2

    The one main reason it's not that popular is the tutorials. And even when there's a good tutorial, it's often of some previous version and it's going to take you a long frustrating time finding where the button the tutorial mentioned is, either the button is not there anymore or switched to some other location. There's also a lack of clear explanations as to how to get from one part of the workflow to the next. Even something as simple as importing a mesh you're working on into it is confusing because there are options to import meshes into it but the videos don't talk plainly about which particular method is ideal for whatever function you're going to use 3dcoat for.

    I tried to use it as a sculpting tool. As for the UI - it is fine, at least much better than one from Zbrush imho. Unfortunately Coat often acts upredictably, you pretty often get the unexpected result, especially when in Voxel mode, plus i do not understand the brush system in Voxel mode - many extra brushes you do not know how to use, but in fact you may get without them as well. It is REALLY hard to use the reference image. Also i could not get the same scale after importing objects from Blender, no matter via brige or not - the imported object is much smaller, than the original. Arrays are complicated, and do not even try to bend something using Bend tool... When in mirror mode the pivot sometimes becomes a pain, you want to change the placement of pivot point, but do not understand, why it makes no effect. When you do the retopology, you do not see the retopo object in other rooms (whyyyyyy???? I know it is possible but why it is not by default??? Fortunately i dont need much retopo work in my flow) And so on. In fact only thing i could do pretty well was texturing - and yes 3DCoat is really good in it, especially in hand painting.

      3DCoat lead programmer promised to make a Scale master for this

    • @rehmanarshad1848
      @rehmanarshad1848 Před 6 měsíci +4

      Regarding the Scale issue, there is a simple fix for this.
      If you're sending models from Blender to 3DCoat using the App-Link add-on or by some other means just understand this.
      Blender uses Centi-meters by Default and 3DCoat and most other 3D software uses meters.
      Now here's the weird thing in my testing even if I set Blender to use meters by default ... and sent the objects from Blender to 3DCoat and exported the final textured model as a .fbx the scale was still off. I have a suspicion that blender or App-link add-on is the culprit.
      There is an easy fix though.
      When you export the fully textured model from 3DCoat as a .fbx file to you're target rendering platform.
      You can apply a transform, so to correct for the scale issue ... multiply the scale by 100.
      1m == 100cm
      That's all you need to do to fix the scaling issues.

    • @MikeMike-wc8on
      @MikeMike-wc8on Před 6 měsíci

      @@rehmanarshad1848 thanks :-) Yes I ended by using fbx too, it keeps size. Still there are many other small bugs that pop up unexpectedly, and this stops me from sculpting in Coat. For exemple very strange process of importing objects, I mean the very beginning, when you already imported an object but for some reason decided to do ctrl z too many times ~ I just loose the imported object. This is weird.

    I've used 3DCoat for awhile and its very powerful but man it needs more tutorials and examples for the workflow in it. Its not super hard to use but the scattered info is what makes it hard to get into. The dev team needs to rework their video manual or maybe hire an artist that is more familiar with the software to show how to use it more fluidly.

    I tried 3dcoat ages ago on steam, but it didn't support my spacemouse, and trying to use it just made the camera allignment go nuts, so i never went back. I will say though that Coat has some of the best dynamic uving tools i've seen outside of a dedicated uving package like rizumuv (which i have). And while the sculpting does look impressive, Blender uses the same voxel tech under the hood, and while Coat isn't subscription based like zbrush now is (which is why i'm stopping using that), £325 (380 euros) is still a big chunk of cash to drop. And yes, the interface is very much overwhelming for new users.

    You have to know the full history to understand the mystery. I first tried 3DC around 15 years ago(this was also the era of Mudbox by Sky matter Weta team) when it was in beta. The dev made an error back then that I don't think he ever recovered from. He demanded through his EULA that users of his software adhere to his old testament beliefs and not use his software to create 'graven images) This turned potential users off in droves. It spread like wildfire through the 3D community and 3DC was essentially boycotted. He never came back from it. No studios of famous artists adopted his software, which means no decent work or tutorials were being created, which means no new users were attracted. And even though the program has improved continually it never really recovered from this early set back. And if you look on the EULA today you will still find elements of his old testament beliefs, yet toned down a bit.

    3D Coat is over $400 and, even though it says 'it's a one time purchase and It's ours forever' the updates are not free after the first year ($50 per update for the second year and and $90 per update for the third!). Having previously owned the software, I can confirm it's pretty good, however I personally found the biggest drawback to it is NURBS and hard surface modelling with millimetre level accuracy. It can do hard surface, but it will just be "to look good enough". The other issue is Rigging. There's no way to rig up a character you have finished retopology on.
    Sculpting it's very nice, however even Blender can do a lot of this now days, and Blender lets you do it on hard surface.. Both Blender and 3dCoad are GPU accelerated which trumps the utter waste bin ready, over-hyped ZBrush.
    Personally, I just find 3dCoat asks a lot of money for a very small aspect of the creation journey for anything other than static "painted clay models"
    Considering tools like Blender let you apply live sculpted detail onto a hard surfaced structure that is millimetre perfect, perhaps the real issue is that it's difficult to really appreciate the reason anyone would want to add more complexity to their creation workflow.. like 3D Coat needs to better market why they think it's worth the added cost and complexity.

    I love 3D Coat, but I found that it lacks in the ability to create fast block-outs when compared to software like Blender, but you can always just import a block-out and go from there.
    The REAL issues I have with 3D Coat is how it handles painting over UV seams and how it destroys the continuity of anything you're trying to paint over on the seams most of the time. Also, the smooth tools in the paint workspace are annoying to work with on seams as well because when they reach a UV border, they attempt to blend the active color with an non-existent BLACK color rather than simply using a 100% transparent color or using the color on the other side of the seam to blend. It's still LEAGES better than any other software I can afford for texture painting, but I find that I have to export most textures(sometimes this also includes things like normal maps too) to other software like Clip Studio when I get to finalizing textures on seams to ensure that the seam transition is smooth.

    I think the price alone makes the software less known.

    i just checked their website and they don't take US currency just euros. Is their a way i can pay another way instead of using european currency?

    • @stanislavchernyshuk6559
      @stanislavchernyshuk6559 Před 8 měsíci

      The original price is in Euros, but during the purchase, when you press the Checkout button, it is automatically converted to the local currency: dollars, pounds, yen, etc. So you will see prices in dollars if you are in the US, and will pay in dollars.

    Tell your sponsor to fix the d*mn website, it's impossible to login existing account, register new one or reset password? The FB and Google+ logins already are depricated. The website is truelly unusable....

    Pilgway need to do the following to make 3D Coat more popular.
    1. Lower the price.
    2. Make TONS of tutorials.
    Without doing that, BLENDER will remain ahead of 3D Coat in terms of popularity.

    There is no doubt that 3dcoat is a very good tool, but it has too many features to know what to use.
    Plasticity is CAD software, but the UI is simple and can be learned by artists with little learning cost.
    If 3Dcoat could be improved to be a little easier to understand and simpler in its UI, it would be the strongest software to use.
