Christopher Ward C65 Aquitaine: if a Tudor BB58 & Fifty Fathoms had a lovechild

  • If we are talking amazing watches for around £1,000 ... I mean... Christopher Ward HAS to enter the conversation! And today we have in the NEW CW C65 Aquitaine Automatic. What a cracking watch!
There is a lot to like about this watch. After 2 weeks of borrowing this from the gorgeous team at Christopher Ward, I really see the charm and appeal in this piece! I think my heart is still captured by the C63 Sealander as my #1 Christopher Ward choice, but I still really like this! :)
It is kinda like if the BB58 and the Fifty Fathoms had a lovechild. And I'm here for it!

As others have pointed out, Britt. The logo is a 'negative' of the Swiss flag combined with the St George Cross. It was designed at one of their partner agencies - by a genius called Jamie and it has rightly won awards for perfectly representing their 'created in England, built in their Swiss atelier', proposition. I think another genius suggested they referred (like Nike does to their 'Swoosh) to it as their Swissh/Swish.
Their watches, as you so rightly point out, are not only incredibly well-made, designed and fit-for-purpose timepieces - at stupidly reasonable prices - but across their (vast) range they now have an undeniably cohesive design language. Which means, that apart from looking awesome, they are also now instantly recognisable as Chris Ward watches. Soooohh, they don't need their ex-partner's name on their dials any more!
Anyone who has a collection of good watches should make a Ward their daily. Anyone starting off in this hobby, should start with one.

Love the new logo that represents the Swiss and English flags. Great looking watch with those little details that make them stand out. Price point in my opinion for a COSC SW200 is a fraction too much, despite a fancy rotor. Domed sapphire bezel is genius.

My favorite CW is the C65 Sandhurst. Military field watch, COSC certified, no date, large screw-down crown, & 38mm! It is as if a Rolex Explorer, Tudor BB36, Hamilton Khaki, and Smiths W10 had some kind of wonderful love child!

I recently bought the C60 Tide 4K and love it. At 42mm it wears well on my 7.5 inch wrist. Keeps perfect time. Love the micro adjustment. I’m wearing it daily. My Omega Aquaterra 150M has been sitting in the box more often than not now. Fantastic watch for the money. I’m on a waitlist for a Rolex Sub but on the fence now about buying it after having the Christopher Ward. Certainly not paying grey market pricing for one. Paying 75% over list just isn’t justifiable.

My advice about Christopher Ward is just buy one. I recently bought the 65 Dartmouth COSC, my boss bought an Oris Aquis around the same time. He said to me what is that?, seeing it on my wrist.. I told him and we swapped watches on our wrists, he commented on the superiority of the case, bracelet, movement & specs of my Christopher Ward over his Oris. Then he did some research and concluded he had bought the wrong watch.

May I also add that firstly if you shoot with the watch outside the sapphire makes the watch look incredible and Christopher Ward call it their 'light catcher case'.
You also mentioned that you wanted a GMT but this watch comes with a desk GMT function if you want it.
Finally and most importantly I need to add that the buying experience for one of these watches is amazing. I have bought a rolex ect in the past and you don't get treated well by boutiques. But if you are close and can make an appointment to attend the office of Christopher Ward in Maidenhead they are incredibly helpful, knowledgable and will sit down and let you go through every watch in their catalogue if you want, a real watch lovers experience.

I personally despised the 9 o’clock “Christopher Ward”. I’ll for sure be buying a green C65 Aquataine and blue C60 Trident (once the updated logo version comes out). My only gripe is the 41mm sizing being an odd choice for a vintage inspired watch. 36-39mm would have made more sense in my opinion, but at least the 41mm has a short lug to lug length for those with smaller wrists.

I love Christopher Robin. I read all his books. Didn't know he made watches though.

I never held one but with that being said seeing it with out the Trident it looks naked the trident is what gave it a bit if pop it's like Superman with out his Cape it just looks off to me. Don't mind me just leaving a comment.

Christopher Ward does not get enough love in horological community. Maybe the name sounds so American it doesn't give the impression of being "Swiss Made", despite the fact that it is Swiss Made.

CW has many interesting and attractive pieces. But I think they suffer from being mainly stuck in a crowded market segment that also has brands with much more name cache. Also, that was a nicely subtle MoonSwatch flex in the unboxing scene.

Still not convinced me on CW though 😉

Agree 100% with you about the CW brand logo before this new revamp- it felt too generic, and didn’t really stand out as a logo that fit the brand. They knocked it out the park w the new logo, and looking forward to purchasing one of their pieces soon. Great review watch gringa😃

It's cheap(ish) because the movement is a bog standard SW200-1. I would go for the COSC version in bronze.

Nice CW but rumoured possibly a new North Flag. Who knows what will happen but lots of speculation on the Tudor front. New FXD or GMT? I do think hard times are ahead of us Britt I don’t like saying it but that’s my opinion. A winter of discontent will just be the start of it. ☹️ On a more cheerful not thanks for another great stream. 🙏🏻👍

I kind of wish they were all COSC (I will NEVER buy a bronze watch), but other than that I think this is an excellent release. The GMT is my favorite, but I do hope we get to see some more colors in that version. Knowing CW, they will do just that over the next year or so. I saw that the new batch of the C65 Super Compressor ditches the name for the new logo only. Here's to hoping the C63 Sealander will get that update for when you purchase one, Britt. As for a 36mm version of that coming up, I'm sure us watch nerds will go crazy for it. 39 is my preferred size for that type of watch because I'm a giant American, but I get the love for the 36.
