The IWC Problem: Why Does No One Buy IWC?
IWC Watches - why don't we see more of them on wrists? We see lots of Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Seiko, Grand Seiko when we go to Redbar or see other people in the streets - but now as much IWC. How come?! That's what today's video is exploring. To me, I think it comes down to 3 main things: the sizes associated with IWC watches (I am thinking of the big Pilot especially - but just pilot watches in general wear large). It reminds me a bit of what is happening with Panerai. Panerai is associated with being massive watches and it just is not the preferred style of right now.
Next, is the price point. The problem is: at the price, there are just other watches people would prefer to buy. IWC is still great - and I don't think they have priced wrong - I just think it is a really competitve price.
Lastly, their brand identity. For me, I think of them as that pilots watch brand - when really they offer so much more. I think they just need to work a bit on their brand storytelling.
But those are my thoughts. What do you guys think to IWC?

This demonstrates a serious lack of education in what makes Rolex so far ahead of everyone else in the industry and why they’re so respected by actual watchmakers. 😁

This is the problem, it is going to expand into other cities when youths realise they can make quick money. I don't even wear my homage watches anymore. I went to London last week and the day before I purchased a Casio for £10 to wear for the day. I was relaxed because I drew no attention to my wrist wear. Very sad situation. Be careful.

I have a pilot 41 in British racing green and think IWC under Chris Grainget Herr has done a really nice job with the brand. They modernize a line annually, and they offee pieces at a range of prices. The pilot line , particularly the big pilot, is easily identifiable and they are telling stories about each line with each new release. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the dive line updated for 2025.

Too expensive for what they are. You can get a decent flieger type watch from Laco. Just like Omega they adopted ETA based movements, put their own twist on it and marketed them as "in-house" and therefore should be more expensive. They are just too chuffed for their own good.

Never in my life have I heard of Omega referred to as the masters of innovation until now 😂 Omega is a fine brand, but calling them the masters of innovation in the wide world of watchmaking is a bit much. PS - the co-axial escapement called out here was invented by a George Daniels who was shopping it around to brands. It wasn’t even invented in-house at Omega.

IWC's watch size has a purpose and a reason for being, the Perpetual Calendar is a vastly complicated watch, hence it makes sense to be larger. The Big pilot watch is Big as it was originally meant to be. however, there is the current Mark XX pilot watches at a very wearable 40mm their pilot chronographs has come down to 42 mm specifically the Top gun series where it used to be 44mm. The Portugueser is meant to be a large watch, I would agree with the pricing issue. IWC is not cheap. But used ones as plenty and easily available for a lot less than the retail price. I have no issue with IWC identity. they are who they are, they have a more diverse portfolio than say Rolex. IWC watch range can be as simple as their entry level pilot watches to the more complicated models. one has to have owned the IWC to truly understand the brand and i still have my first generation IWC Top Gun and the more recent Mark XVIII. and i still love this brand.

I have several IWC watches. Love the Ingenieur and the Pilots. Never liked the Portugeiser. Never bought a big IWC. The problem with price is rather to do with the quality of the movement. For that money, Omega has them completely beat. Of course Omega has Rolex beat as well.

Been having this exact same dialogue with people on forums for weeks now. Great to hear someone influential bring it up. I WON'T afford an IWC pilot's watch even though I've started collecting them because there are too many other manufacturers presenting well made, satisfying tools for a relative pittance. I still want one and understand their pricing but the challenge, for me, is ignoring the alternatives.

No.1 reason is the community. People are wired to follow the norm so it's the path they take. I get that the classic pilot watch design isn't mass appealing and what people choose first, but their more affordable aquatimer collection is so cool and speaks the language that should get more attention. Hope to get one of those one day.

  • @eagle_rb_mmoomin_418

meh this is like Hi Fi once you pass the £1500 mark per component there's not a huge point to it. Unless it's multi channel stuff and that has serious diminishing returns also around the £4000ish mark. For watches I suspect it's the £3500 mark and even that feels a bit too high for something you use everyday.
