BEST & WORST of Watches and Wonders 2024: Rolex, Tudor, Patek Philippe, JLC and so many more. Obviously, Rolex was a bit quiet this year and for this reason, a lot of people seem to be writing off this year as a dud of a year - BUT I DON'T THINK IT WAS! There were so many new, amazing releases notably from Tudor, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Cartier, Czapek, Piaget, Grand Seiko! And while yes, Rolex was lack lustre - I feel like this year was meant to be a bit of a pallet cleanser for them to come in strong next year. I feel like next year, Rolex is going to leave some jaws on the floor!
Who knows, maybe even an exciting mid-season release?!
Anyways, enough Rolex - there are so many amazing watches to talk about! So here is who WON Watches and Wonders, and who kinda lost.

Auntie Britt! Great video and recap of the show. As a card carrying member of the Tudor cult, and according to many a very boring guy, I messaged my AD, at 6 in the morning of the release, to have my name put on the list for a BB Monochrome (with the not-a-Jubilee bracelet). I did think about the BB58 GMT for a moment, but I have a BB GMT "Root Beer Lite" already so my need for a gilt dial and bezel has already been scratched (And the 41mm does suit me a touch better). Can’t help but notice this year lots of people hating on Rolex for bringing out the 44mm gold deep-sea. probably the same people hating on the 44mm yacht master 2 (known colloquially as the “clown master”). Well, Rolex discontinued the yacht master 2 in lieu of that new gold deep Sea. Definitely a cleaner and classier 44mm for large men who require a large watch.

I am not a Rolex fan boy, I do not even have the budget for a Rolex, but I kinda understand and appreciate the reason why they keep their releases more conservative. I think watch brands like Rolex don't change their watches much and play safe to keep their previous releases relevant to their owners. Of course I do not agree with their expensive metal only releases, but I understand the reason of not changing their design much. I think that what Rolex should do is to stop releasing precious metal watches and start making more stainless steel version of all of their models

Patek needs to make more comfortable bracelets. I for one don’t waste money on leather straps. I like to use my watches, and leather doesn’t last very long.

Zenith had some interesting releases. The Defy Revival diver is a cool watch. The extreme diver they offered, for what it is, it’s unique and well thought out. The Skyline chronograph, while I doubt the world needs another integrated sports watch release, it was missing from the line, also well executed. I do t gravitate towards white dials, the white disk version looks particularly good.
Had they released the Triple Calendar El Primero now rather than a couple months ago, it would have made a bigger splash.
My biggest disappointment from them is failing to refresh their Elite dress watches.
Zenith, I think their releases were too quirky to make the best of list, but definitely worth a notable mention..
The Defy Revivals - once you learn how to look at them, they are very fine watches.

A note on Patek and 30m: depth ratings are done in a stationary environment. That means they do not account for pressure due to movement. You know, like the pressure of your body moving when you swim. Rule of thumb is whatever it says it can do, assume it can do half of that when diving. Safe side.

Not actually true, from Jack Forster in 2017 on Hodinkee, "Without repeating all the calculations here (they involve denominators and the Greek alphabet and are PITA to type out), at a depth of 330ft(100 m) and moving your arm at 3 ft/sec, the dynamic pressure is in the order of magnitude of 0.14 feet of head or 0.04% of the depth. Even assuming you could move your arm at 20 ft/sec (14 mph!) the dynamic pressure is only about 6.2 feet of additional depth (

Lol you aren’t adding any measurable additional pressure swimming and certainly not enough to cut the value in half.

I have no idea why Tudor still make that BB 41 with over 13mm thickness, the gmt movement is more complex , thinner case and SAME level of water resistant . All that because of …. Rolex ?

  • @aslamc9288

I hope the BB58 GMT is a success for Tudor, because I’d love to see more colorways down the line, but it’s definitely not for me. I had a blue bezel Black Bay partly because I just don’t get on with gilt dials. So I definitely won’t be trading my Diet Pepsi in on the Caffeine Free Coke Zero (black, red, and gold, look at the packaging), but then again, I have a wrist big enough that the extra size of the Diet Pepsi isn’t an issue. I would love it to be thinner, but I can manage. Nothing at W&W has really gotten me going except the Zenith Defy Skyline Chrono. I feel like it’s the best alternative to a Royal Oak chrono, which is, sadly, far out of reach for me. $13,400 is a bit steep for a steel chronograph that doesn’t have a name like Daytona, but if they dip below $9,000 on the gray market, that becomes very tempting. Only question left would be black or blue.

The new BB58 GMT is now the watch it should always have been in the first place (even if it has gilt hands 😫). I can’t bring myself to feel grateful to Tudor for finally fixing its own original egregious slab-sided error. About ruddy time! 😅

At 11:00 there can a little debate about static vs dynamic pressure (unironically we had this debate at my science class in uni because my professor was also a watch enthusiast!). And if i understand correctly 30m wr = 3bar resistance. If we had a watch that breaks exactly at 3 bars i wouldn't take it for 30m dive because at 30m there is actually 4 bars of static pressure (one from the surface air + 3 from water above you) plus water movement generates dynamic pressure. But hey, i'm yet to see anyone using their dive watch as a dive watch, simply because diving computer does everything better. I take my watch for occasional diving (AOWD, i'm not a pro by any mean) but more like for luls, not as a tool. And according to google, pressure car washer is around 110-160 bar, so even doxa sub 1500t/rolex sea-dweller might give up lol. So here i said it, if you wash your car with those pressure thingies your lifestyle requires that new rolex deep sea. And don't wash your car in a patek, please, lol.

Surprised IWC didn't get a mention - while I'm certain the Eternal Calendar will need service at least once before the 45 million year moonphase needs to be adjusted, credit to them for being so extra. The new horizon blue Portugiesers look slick, too. The Santos Rewind is a cheap gimmick (it's been done before, it'll be done again). Tudor stole the show (I got a Zulu Time a few months ago so the GMT, slick as it is, is not for me). Everyone kept saying how the platinum Rolex 1908 was such a hit, but it remains to be seen how many people shopping that price point for a slim, precious metal time-only watch will want the same logo as the Brolex crowd.

Loved the VC retrograde date (which is stunning on the blue Overseas moonphase retrograde date too - the most beautiful Overseas imho). Meh about Tudor which is a bit too much of a vintage replica department of Rolex.

I love seeing unattainable watches for me. Cheap entertainment. Your video the other day about the Seiko gmt peaked my interest. Have you ever thought about doing a Hamilton or Citizen video?
I still have my grandpas Rolex Submariner he bought for the princely sum of $150 back in the lat 60’s. I keep it to hand down , but I really don’t get the attraction. Adjusted for inflation , new Subs should be around 3k. You’re just paying for hype and FOMO. I would much rather have different Seikos. I still love the channel. It’s one of 2 I watch (punny😂) regularly. Keep up the good work, gringa 😎
