I regret buying so many cheap watches instead of buying one really good one. You speak very well.
The watch I regret buying the most is the F-91w.
It has been a gateway drug for me and now I can’t stop.
Yes, the F91 is probably the biggest seller of any other brands of watches on the market. It's cheap and reliable and if it should ever go wrong or is damaged you can just purchase another one without having to break your bank account on any luxury watch like a Rolex etc. The only trouble with Casio watches they can be addictive. I know that from experience as I have several of them in my collection both digital and analogue along with two G-Shock 5610's for when I need a tough and reliable watch when on military duties.
I regret buying an F-91w because it's so perfectly practical I have to make myself wear any of my other watches
"Sank harder than Ocean Gate" - you're killing me man!
Spoiler alert!
I came straight to the comments to see if anyone caught that lol
This makes me feel like my watch mistakes aren't too bad 😂
If an Emmy existed for CZcams I believe this video would earn one. Fantastic video. Our mistakes are typically our best stories, and yours are so enjoyable.
"...regain control of their bladders". Man, I almost lost mine.
That last one is a pretty powerful regret my friend.
Yacht Master much underrated……..and on the assent, perhaps?
Yeah. As he said it I was wondering "WTF were you thinking?"
@@kiljaeden7663 It's only one step away from selling your wedding ring and trying out other rings. Maximum facepalm.
Gotta agree, the last was the worst. I admire Andrew's courage in admitting this one especially. Even if I don't particularly like that watch (for some reason, anything raised on a bevel gives me the heebie jeebies).
you can’t sell the watch you got married with and honeymooned, unless you get divorce first. Now, giving it’s Rolex and if the current owner still got papers, this might be traceable and fixable. Just saying.
Where's the Royal Oak, Andrew? Are you trying to pretend it never happened? We shall never forget.
I was thinking the same thing. 🤣
Came to the comments for this. I just knew we were gonna get the story.
Maybe he's not ready to talk about it again. Too traumatic
What happened
@@YingDat He bought it for MSRP and sold it just before it exploded in popularity.
Your sense of humour is top class! And your checking habit totally speaks to me.
Your analogy about the Apollo Command Module and the Space X Dragon is your best analogy yet. Nicely written Sir.
Biggest regrets are selling, pre-pandemic, a 2006 Rolex Submariner and an Omega Aqua Terra solid 18K yellow gold, each for around 5K USD. I have since then bought the Sub at twice the price but not the Omega which has tripled. Excellent video!!
ouch!
Biggest regret? How is your $10 million retirement portfolio doing this year? Watches are useless. Tick, tick, tick. Dead.
OMG!!! The IWC story is priceless!!!
There was a small moment when I also considered purchasing a Uboat. Luckily that moment passed quickly
maybe you can buy a Sinn dive watch made of U-boat steel as a placebo
I like those totally dreadful slabs of steel, like the british counterpart, the Graham... in some non healthy way, I must admit.
In fact if I could get my hands on the red, cheap, quartzy Darkmoon, maybe I'd pull the trigger... but it has to be reeeeally cheap.
I think you mean, it took a dive
Andrew your writing is really good! I immensely enjoy the humor and the content. Wishing you all the success!
The U Boat! I have my own personal experience of an Egyptian U Boat copy, claimed by the seller to be ‘almost waterproof’ taken by yours truly into the pool. That night I took it back claiming it was steamed up! The seller said to me ‘I told you not to take it into the water’ my reply was I only took it into the shower. Anyway he took the case back off and approximately an egg cup of water poured out…..enough said!
My biggest regret: Ten years ago, I attended an intimate dinner party with Bruno Meier, the recently retired CEO of Rolex. In an incredible act of generosity, he offered me the opportunity to buy a Rolex. At the time, I was a horological Philistine. Thus being so I said, "No, thank you".
You feel bad? Imagine how he feels! CEO of a watch company, THE Watch Company, can't even move a single watch. impostor syndrome the entire night.
lolz, thanks for sharing!
@@johnlee7164LOL
You made him feel humble…a great gift 😂😂😂
But you have a story which is somehow better. We try to tie these silly metal time pieces to a story, because the story IS the point. If you stole a fork from the event it’d be worth more than any watch. (The story part, not the watch itself). I’m selling my Daytona as part of a down payment for a house and to be honest I don’t care about it at all. Also sell a Grand Seiko for the same reason. The rest of my collection is under $500 for the most part and I only have one watch I truly care about and it’s worth at best $300 new. I like your story more than I like my Daytona, (although I am wearing it for the next few days before I send it in for service, cleaning and authentication for its new owner).
"I was young, dumb, and full of com-pletely stupid ideas ... " Wow. Just wow.
Andrew is a modern day poet...damn son. Hilarious
😂😂😂
I was thinking, that can't have been an accidental turn of phrase. 😂
Applies to everyone.
That one had me rolling lol
really enjoyed this - just found you since you created own channel, & this was by far my favorite of a few watched this evening
Best video yet on the new channel! Your way with words makes watching so enjoyable!
Hilariously brilliant, Andrew! (and great meeting you at W&W ;)
Just brilliant and I especially appreciate you showing pictures from your personal album 🤩
"Regrets, I've had a few but then again, too few to mention".
A perfect line from Dame Shirley Bassey…we all do mistakes….but to few to mention…
Love your sense of humor, Mate! Thanks!
I find your experience very telling of the strenght we can find when it's needed, and the amazing resilience of human beings when they keep being true to themselves, whatever comes their ways. I greatly respect that.
Thank you for your amazing work. That was a very humorous watch too! Glad to have found your channel. Greetings from Belgium.
I also sold my wedding watch - also a Rolex. I sold it to help buy my wife and I our first house. No regrets at all
That’s a good trade off
I am pretty much sure if you would have asked her to sell the wedding ring hopefully a diamond for the sake of this “comparison” then she would have divorce you or have a big fight calling you a cheap loser…, in my opinion… Just saying! See the trade here?!!!
@@marconi306 Your comment has really annoyed me so heres a wall of text in response:
1. You seem to have relationship issues? Perhaps low self esteem, projecting terms like "cheap loser" on others? You should work on that
2. She told me not to sell my watch and got mad at me when I did
3. I sold it anyways because I dont like the direction the brand has taken, I made a profit as Rolex was super hyped and overpriced at that time, and I have about 10000 identical ones to choose from on C24 if I wanted (which I do not)
4. She would sell her diamond in a second if we needed for the family
Which ref? I can't imagine it being more than a drop in the bucket, and if it was something like a Daytona I can't imagine one needing the money to get a house.
Outstanding writing Andrew!
Ooh that Yatch Master is a life blunder !😂
I have never sold a watch... I am lucky enough to love watches that are at the more affordable end of the market and, therefore, am not tempted to. I will never ever sell my Tudor pelagos lhd, which is number 367, which is from your former place of work... you probably have had it in your hot, sweaty mits. I am very fortunate. Tudor, Seiko, and Longines for me.
Great video, thanks.
Some great stories there , thanks for sharing those although pretty painful
You are a brilliant essay writer. I partly tune in to hear how well your narration is done.
Sir, I enjoy your self-deprecation, and your writings inspire me to write better but will never approach your humour and well placed metaphors. Ball bearings in the casket...damn! That is good. I'm going have to steal that and use it shamelessly. My regret: I didn't get my Tag Heuer Monaco sooner so that I can enjoy it earlier. I too, am an engineer and I work in industrial sites, which means there is no way in hell that I will wear my precious timepiece from Mondays to Fridays. And that means I can only slap on my Tag on Friday evenings and gaze at it lovingly over weekends.
YOU SOLD YOUR WEDDING WATCH??🤯
There’s such a thing as a wedding watch???
We all have watch regrets. It’s inevitable. You fueled my interest with watch finder and I’m grateful for the journey. Ty
Great video containing both heart and soul
Your are absolutely right about the lug to lug length in the legend diver but that is one of its charms. I have a 6.5 inch wrist and I still love mine.
I have a Skin diver. And I am in love with the extra long lugs. Without them this watch would only be another boring heritage reissue nonsense...
Andrew your explanations of why you missed out on H Moser was hilarious. Loved the rant 😂😂😂
I bought my first proper watch for my 30th birthday in 2000 - a full rose gold 1964 Omega Constellation. Wonderful condition. Cost me £650. Simply beautiful. But….. I was hooked and needed to buy more watches and couldn’t afford it - and the constellation had gone up in value. You know what came next. Still makes me want to cry.
Insightful watch humor at its finest.
We do have a few things in common! I am an engineer too (electronics), watch enthusiast, photographer, and an author on photography! All the best to you. Love your humor.
Really subtle Blackadder reference. Well done.
My biggest regret was letting go of my submariner; I wore it for everything. Nothing had ever come close with regards to the 'connection' that I had with that watch. I'm hoping to but an Explorer soon... and that will have adventures and memories of its own
Sorry for getting off the subject, but I can't wait for you to review the Twelve X
When I bought my Grand Seiko snowflake in 2018 the boutique had a whirlpool that I almost bought instead. At the time my thinking was tiebreaker goes to spring drive. I’m not too torn about it though, the snowflake is a forever watch.
Most of us can only dream of owning an FP Journe. For me, it’s the one that got away that I always regret (I’ve never sold a watch, in part for that reason - I fear I’ll regret it!) Almost pulled the trigger on a pre-owned VC Overseas about 8 years ago, when they were selling for about 1/4 of what they sell for today. I hesitated over price, and it sold. Oh I wish I’d bought it: there’s no way I’d spend that much on a watch today!
The whole U-Boat segment nearly wrote me off. 🤣😂🤣
Gotta love this guy the best on the tube regards from Australia 🇦🇺
I can absolutely understand your fascination with Yachtmaster (YM). Among Rolex that's the only one I kept in my collection and I wear it everyday, everywhere...from gym to the shower! YM is definitely the most underrated watch in the Rolex catalogue.
I usually find your videos too long but I stayed for that one😊. I can feel exactly what you experienced...nostalgia is a terrible thing and at the same time a sweet feeling...In fact it's all money's fault: would there be no evolution in prices we would only buy watches for pleasure and would have no particular regrets...I also wish I had pulled the trigger on 2 or 3 Rolex or JLC in the late 90's, but internet was not there to influence our behaviours (hope my english makes sense)
Andrew, you are well known and accepted as one of the leading watch enthusiasts now owning your own channel. I liked it a lot that you spoke so openly about your mistakes in buying and selling watches That makes you all to human, my respect for that! And it made me feel better, because when "Mr. Talking Hands" himself made those mistakes, how could I, who knows nothing about watches, do better? 🙂
People who act like their next mistake will be their first, are especially irritating.
I love this video mate! 🍻
If he had bought cheaper watches he would not have had to immediately sell his old ones to fund the new purchases...and thus avoid a lot of seller's regret.
Thanks for another enjoyable video.
nkuwan You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
I sold my Tudor Blackbay Heritage 41, I really liked that watch. Will have to buy it back one day.
Was it the burgundy bezel?
I laughed out loud at the allegory on intuition… I’m out of synch with the universe LOL 😂
Andrew, I feel you pain so I have taken to splitting my buying into two categories. The first is watches I like and will wear. The second is watches I am buying because they may prove to be a good flip or investment (like your Journe example). I wear the first batch and will never sell them so I don’t regret. The second group I do not wear ever so I don’t make memories with them and thus they are easy to move on from emotionally when it is time to sell. This formula seems to be working for me. The only hard part is not wearing the “flip” watches, but that is easier than regret!
I really needed this. All of your misfortune has really cheered me up today. Thank you.
The Longines legend diver is one of my favorite watches in my collection. It's the newer design though, blue and black face. Gorgeous and comfortable and keeps great time.
Andrew. I know I don't know you and you don't know me, and I'm not 100% sure if you've mentioned having tried therapy before, but after having heard that IWC Ingenieur story, I feel compelled to encourage you to try it again.
The Yachtmaster 40mm white dial (2-tone) is my favorite Rolex
Andrew you are a very funny man, this was brilliant.🤣
Keep up the good work.
That last one hurts! I was in high school when I first saw the YM in person for $6k. It was my dream watch then
I laughed a lot while watching this. Thanks for the mid-day chucklefest.
I wear a Tudor Black Bay 58. Wife wears a Rolex Yacht Master. Incredible timepieces
I saw what you did there with the "Young, dumb and ..." ;)
"...full of com (pletely)" Yeah, he did drag out that first syllable just the tiniest bit.
That was hilarious. Best line in the whole video.
Just because you regret buying that watch doesn't mean you should discourage anyone from buying a watch they want ... ridiculous
Just bought a Daytona 2015 steel black face. Put a black rubber strap on it and it absolutely pops so I've got two looks in one which makes the cost more bearable. What I didn't consider at the time of purchase was the servicing costs add another £700ish on top and a 3 month wait, but at least it's only every 10yrs or so. The price may come down this year but I have no regrets, it is a stunning watch and will always remain that way. Go for it
I love the Yachtmaster! Have you tried to track yours down again to rebuy?
My biggest regret is not owning a vintage Milgauss. I worked in a data center for nearly 3 decades and own the z blue and white dial iterations luckily. I have no way to wrist an older reference financially AND in person, as online retail is an iffy proposition at best.
I sold my 16622 as well. Also wore it on my wedding and much after. Still miss it.
You’ve been humbled and blessed, and not with watches ❤
I could listen to you all day, Andrew. You’re the David Attenborough of the watch world.
I owned a 4 liner Rolex 14060 and because I wanted a cyclops I pxed it for a 116610. My local AD gave my £2000 against a £5900 sub date. I hated the cyclops!
I wish I had kept the 14060 - or the 116610 for that matter!
Oh man I look at the 4 liner 14060m as a modern 5512 Submariner. I still own my 14060m from 03 and still keeps time like it did brand new. The 3130 is a indestructible movement. It's a watch I will never sell and it's SOO COMFORTABLE on the wrist
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 I absolutely agree. One of my favourite watches of all time and, as usual, I didn’t realise what I had until it was gone!
Wow! You have owned a great collection! But, you know that! Enjoy the Tudor! It is a great watch.
The guy from "Batteries not included". Great reference. I'm proud to say I actually saw that at the cinema on its first (and probably only) release. The first disappointing cinema experience of my then young life.
Biggest regret is selling my collection of beautiful 70’s vintage Omega’s to raise funds to buy a Rolex Seadweller 16600 which I hated and flipped 6-months later for a loss. Double bubble then.
Very funny, great content, thanks Andrew 😂
Love that Yachtmaster too.
haha great video. bought my first automatic a few months ago. new tissot prx. greatly buillt but found out it’s a fancy swatch that can’t be serviced and sold it at a loss. bought a second hand seiko with 7s26 movement. absolutely love it. dream watch is a rolex ref 126200
Love the Point Break reference…
Thank you for the Apollo to space x analogy
My biggest regret was an impulse buy of a full-on 18K rose gold Breguet Aero Navale (with the full 18Kt gold band) instead of a Rolex Metorite Daytona way back in 2004. A few years later I sold the Breguet for the same $20K I paid for it & bought a white dialed SS Daytona for $9K which I still own. But the thought of passing on that meteorite Daytona (at the time $16K) haunts me to this day.
I am happy with my casio duro nickname, the Marlin, for its reliable quartz movement and durability and the ability to customize it.
Bought and sold a lot of watches, the two I miss the most are my Submariner and Panerai. But I do love my Oris Aquis and my Omega Planet Ocean.
My biggest regret was not buying that cherry silver Porsche air cooled 993 911 coupe for $25k 17 years ago.
On your behalf, I just hit myself with a hammer. That's a big one.
I so very much agree with you on Roger Dubuis, and I really hope they come back to their roots. The La Monégasque is a grail watch for sure, although size (too big) and water resistance (too low) are not in my favor.
Character-resistant bezel, made me giggle :D
I bought a new two tone Datejust II with Champaign and diamonds dial from the AD for a little more than $12,000. It never ran right, so I took it in to go back to the dealer for factory service. Two weeks later, they call me back and hand me my watch that someone had put under the polishing wheel and destroyed every facet and edge… and it wasn’t even serviced. There was no recourse from Rolex.
I have bought and sold so many watches, including vintage. No regrets. My taste has matured to high end Seiko and Grand Seiko. The SLA055 makes so much more sense to me than a sub' and then there is the lume!
I bought a Seiko SKX009 from a friend for $400 just when they were discontinued. Eventually I wore that watch for a good year until I sold it for a profit. Slowly I started regretting selling that watch until the end of the year I was offered one for sale for much less than I sold AND bought it for. The exact same watch. Bought it back and it’s returned to my collection.
That IWC story is exactly like something I would do….just a little bit more, just a little more.
That U Boat is pretty awesome 💕
We are so much alike! So many regrettable watch decisions, for the sake of finding out what I really like.
I tell myself there was a reason for each decision, and it's true. I just consider it all a part of the journey in this odd hobby.
Biggest regret, buying a Tudor BB, back in 2019, just before it all kicked off 😅, it's the 41.... and used prices aren't what you'd hoped they'd be 🤦
Don’t buy a stainless steel Daytona for grey market prices. It definitely doesn’t feel like the £20K+ you’ll pay for it. I regret buying mine and am in the process of selling it.
Thank you! I've just bought a Bell-Matic in really good condition and I was starting to think that the mechanism was faulty because I couldn't get the crown to change the day/date
The self deprecation had me cracking up. Reminded me so much of me.
Yachtmaster is a great watch, love it with blue dial
You're hilarious! I like your angle on things
I have so many watch regrets that I can't even count 😢
I actually used watchfinder back then to order all the rolexes i wanted, had them for a day or two in the house then sent them all back. This gave me a great opportunity to go through the rolex range very fast, and also realise, they are very far from anything overly special.
