  • Hi everybody! I'm just here making another video with some of my recommendations on "dos and don'ts" when handling hedgehogs with my own personal experience!
    Again I'm sorry for lighting issues and any bad sound qualities, I'm still working that out!

    I found 3 hedgehogs that were left in a trashcan.. I think they were used for breeding their super mean but ive.got them to warm up, I can scratch 2 of their chins now, 1 is taking a bit longer lol. It's kinda difficult here because their illegal here in California, but I don't want to give them to authorities because they will "destroy" them as they are not a native species

      chris duncan I live in California as well and I want a ferret and/or a hedgehog but they're illegal here. There really is no reason to keep hedgehogs illegal (at least not that I know of).

    • @welcome2insanity267
      @welcome2insanity267 Před 7 lety +1

      chris duncan they're illegal because if they escape they can mess up the food chain in those certain areas. Also you will not find a vet who handles hedgehogs so if they get sick they'll die

      Walker Adams thick gloves are a good starter for picking them up!!! :-) ill make that into my next video i think! But you can work your way off of it. I would say a hedgehog is about $150-$200 usually. And i have care videos on what you should get for them like the cage and wheel and food! Cages can be cheap if you use a makeshift. Actual ones are pricey like $100. And food is about $15 a bag. But a bag will last literally months so thats good and cheap :-)

      @lpsmilkshakelps3090 Před 4 lety +1

      @@LivChambliss actually, if you want a hegdehog to bond with you you should probably never pick them up with gloves. They wont get used to your smell, and you will never get used to their quills, and you both have to do that in order to bond. The way to pick them up is to scoop them up from under so that they know what your doing. If you put gloves on you will never get used to their quills and they will never get used to you. I just got a hedgheog 5 days ago, ive never held one before, and their quills dont hurt very much as long as your careful. Its best not to cover up your scent.

    • @elcowgirl759
      @elcowgirl759 Před 7 lety +1

      Shiloh Genesis you shouldn't because they'll breed, a lot if places won't even sell those two together for breeding purposes, also, its highly illegal if they do breed and if they find out they'll confiscate your hedgehog

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety

      Its not illegal to breed your hedgehogs, although do not house them together because it will happen and you more than likely dont want that. Also hedgehogs naturally live alone and will fight and hurt each other when housed together unless its two females with good temperate (still not recommended). It takes a lot of looking into, research, and knowledge about breeding and hedgehogs to do that, so go ahead and get another cage for the male and don't let them be together :-) sounds kinda sad to us because humans live with humans, but its normal for hedgehogs! You are doing them a favor keeping them apart! The female doesn't have to worry about mating and neither of them are put in harmful situations. Its best to handle them separately if you cannot keep them separated on your own when being handled too! Hope you have fun with your (possibly soon to be) male hedgie! I love mine!

    • @elcowgirl759
      @elcowgirl759 Před 7 lety

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety

      hedgehogs teeth don't grow :-) they don't need chews and typically will not chew things altogether! They might bite on plastic things out of boredom but they don't have incisors to keep down because they technically arent in the rodent family :-)

      Jed Wright six weeks and already a grump! That's a shame :-( my first hedge was like that. I wish I were able to buy her off of you to be honest. If the seller will take her back I highly recommend. They are usually such nice and tame critters when bought gay such a young age just like pippin here :( I just look at the grumpier ones as misunderstood, and it really shows how different each and every hedgehog can be. They all have their own unique personalities and sometimes there are the ones who aren't so enjoyable :-( I personally believe it can be fixed over time with much bonding and attention and work but in your situation I highly suggest trying to sell her back to the owner.

But make sure you handle them for an hour a day also (if she hisses or bites you make sure you don't put her down or back in her cage, that'll serve as a reward for her and she'll do it more often)

    Ok so I have a hedgehog and she is a couple months younger than turning one. I saw her is her cage wobbling and shaking so I looked up what it meant and it said she is going into hibernation. I put my plug in heater on and put my hedgehog on a towel. My room is kept a warm temperature just for my hedgehog. If she is going into hibernation I don't know why. Can you PLEASE HELP??? Do you know if anything else could be happening

      Also she is naturally a scared hedgehog that rolls up quickly and today she lets me touch her and she doesn't care. Also her eyes look like she is about to fall asleep and she keeps going to sleep (she haven't used her wheel that is in her cage for 3 days) it isn't normal

      Hey I'm Tiff oh no! That does sound like a hibernation issue all but the warm stomach. Possibly wobbly hedgehog syndrome. Its good that you put her in front of a heater. I would sit with her in your lap for a while and see if she snaps back into it. Ive had a hedgehog who liked to try and hibernate if my room wasn't around 76-78 degrees so i eventually had her in her own room that was super warm until aye passed from cancer. If ahe doesnt snap back out of it soon and you keep her really warm, (make sure she is eating too and if shes not...) i would call a vet that treats hedgies near you! (I would expect maybe around a $50 comp exam fee. Thats how much mine always were) if she needs meds that will cost extra too 😩😭

      Cadince bibbee yeah that can be the hardest part about being a hedgehog owner. All hedgehogs are different with different personalities and pippin is lucky very socialble and doesn't ball up super often. My last hedgehog did though and it does hurt no matter that and it still does, but you do grow used to it eventually. One thing that really helps is wearing some sort of leather based gloves or kitchen mitts! And once they warm up to you and unball you can try taking them off and handling them personally!

    I'm saving up my money to get myself a hedgehog and all the materials for them. I want one because they're small and cute and I have separation anxiety and I might get my hedgehog trained to be a service animal. I've been watching so many videos about hedgehogs. How are hedgehogs around cats? I will never leave them alone together or let my cat go near them outside of their cage but I know that if bunnies get too scared they'll die. None of the videos that I have watched have gone over that yet. Also I keep a fan in my room, but it's a small circle fan that's on the floor that is pointed at my bed. I have a small heater that I could put on her if needed. How do I measure how cold my room is?

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety +1

      African Pygmy hedgehogs cost about $200 alone, and a proper cage is about $100, then the food, wheel, bowls, and den is about another $50-70 together (making sure you get good proper CAT food for the hedgehog!)
      Also, I don't really think it's possible to "train" a hedgehog to become an emotional support animal (if that's the term you are looking for). That's usually what people are looking to get for anxiety and when they are, they usually look for ESDs (emotional support dogs). They are not domesticated animals and cannot really be taught to do anything for you, other than being "trained" to use a litter box, which they kind of naturally do on their own anyways.
      Hedgehogs are very iffy when it comes to being social, which makes them a very poor choice to being an emotional support animal. They won't be able to provide comfort when needed (i have major anxiety issues and never think to look to my hedgehog for comfort, to be honest, and he is very social but still probably not social enough)...
      Hedgehogs are also nocturnal, therefore they should not be out of their cage and handled much during the day when they should be sleeping. This will screw up their sleeping schedule and could drastically impact their health and lifespan. They could potentially turn into a very grumpy hedgehog if that is done to them as well, and will not want to be handled as much if they are taken out in the day too often as well.
      They are also very very spiky creatures and if someone like you and me is having some sort of anxiety meltdown and needs something to calm down, you do not want to be stabbed a million times by something that actually hurts a LOT. And what is also sad is that a lot of people are actually allergic to these little guys and will break out in a lot of rashes and hives when handling them.
      So I really really do not recommend them as any kind of emotional support animal. BUT that is not me saying you shouldn't get one to have because they are great and I love them with all of my heart. Now if you want something to help with anxiety, I do have great recommendations, and they can get really weird but can be really basic but they are dogs, and cats, but also rabbits, snakes, guinea pigs, rats, and different kinds of lizards.
      I didn't mean to come off harsh, I'm really a nice person but hedgehogs are my passion and I just really really do not recommend these guys to do any sort of "service" other than looking cute in front of a camera or rolling around in a ball! :-)

      Jamma Gaming well it depends. Hedgehogs may be a commitment. Will you be able to care for them if/when you go to college? My college allows me to have my hedgehog in my dorm so its not a problem. Pippin also is very calm in the sink whennits bath time so its not hard. His nails dont really grow, which is kinda weird, so i hardly find myself clipping them. They do need the occasional baths, probably once every two weeks or every month, because their skin is very dry and they need the natural oils. It all kinda depends on the hedgehog. I would recommend grabbing a friend or a parent if you arent confident and see if they would help you out until you are okay with doing it on your own.

I would google hedgehog breeders near you! Try to avoid pet store hedgehogs because they usually don't come from the best breeders and have more problems later on in their life such as kidney failure. Getting in out and just spending quality time with him is what works! Giving treats (meal worms) and just holding while watching a movie, reading, playing video games, etc! Even putting a hoodie on around the house and letting him sleep in the front pocket is great! :-)

      Liv Chambliss thank you! Most of the tips I got were just "you can't" but every day lately I've been getting him out and letting him cuddle up under my covers, he likes to stay by my feet, which I don't know if that counts as quality time? But I've been doing that every day, and he seems to be doing a little better when I'm handling him. I have tried to hand feed him but he doesn't like new treats that much, I tried apples, sweet potatoes, and eggs but he hasn't really budged with anything but popcorn (he only has a couple bites which I made sure was safe) but thank you for the tips I will keep updated!

      What do you think if I get one though I'm ten?

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety

      If you think you are responsible enough to care for the hedgie and you will clean their cage weekly or as needed, feed them every day, water them everyday, and pay attention to them everyday (and ask for help as needed!) then you should be okay!!

    Hi! I'm thinking of getting a Hedgehog in 3-4 weeks, and I'm 12. Do you think it would be a good pet for me? I've been looking up information on them and they seem like calm and tame pets that require attention...also, another question, how long do your hedgehogs usually live..?

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety

      I think it would be okay as long as you do your research! and you are suuuper dedicated to taking care of them! they require a lot of attention and bonding time as well as cage cleanings! and their life expectancy can range from 4-8 years really. They are prone to cancer sadly, and thats how I lost my last hedgehog at the age of 2ish in a cancer surgery :-(

      Sleep in a shirt or with a piece of fabric or such for a couple days then put it in their housing so they can get used to your scent. Have some bonding time with it every day for at least 30 minutes so they can used to your touch and smell def not wearing gloves. There’s lots of good tips out there.

    Why are hedgehogs so expensive

    • @LivChambliss
      @LivChambliss  Před 7 lety

      Welcome2 Insanity it prevents impulse purchases because they are such popular animals. They would be a higher target of abuse if they were easier to purchase and at a lower price. And more inexperienced owners or lesser informed people would want to own them right away without enough knowledge about the animal. It's more bang for you buck basically.

      Phatzboy lardo what? Haha I mean technically these specific types of hedgehogs aren't even found in the wild at all. They're domestically bred like rabbits which is how their strange coloration came about. But come from the African Pygmy breed.
