United States Marine Corps - USMC Eagle Globe and Anchor (EGA) actual ceremony for Kilo Company atop the Reaper after completing the 54 hour crucible at Camp Pendleton.
I am a 30 year Marine my battalion was charged with building the Crucible course at Camp Pendleton. I had the pleasure and honor of attending the first recruits to complete the training. OOORahhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!
Sunday, November 16th, 1997. I'll never forget that day. That was the morning I became a Marine. After 54 hours of emotional and physical challenge. I had to climb the Grim Reaper at Camp Pendleton on a partially torn hamstring I was desperately hiding from the drill instructors for fear I'd get placed back in the cycle behind us. One of my platoon buddies by the name of Gamez helped me up...I'll never forget him either. That feeling of accomplishment is something you are rarely going to eclipse. I've had a son who makes me proud every day, I've graduated from college, I've made a lot of great friends and done good things as a civilian veteran. But losing 68 pounds in basic training and finishing when many of my own family members didn't think I had it in me...there's a pride in my time spent that will stay with me until the day I die. It's not something people who haven't gone through it can fully understand. So I'll just say Semper. Oooh rah!
I bawled like a baby. But I went through a LOT to get to that 13th and final week. Almost tore my meniscus, did tear my hamstring partially and had to conceal it during the Crucible. Lost 68 pounds. It meant a little bit more to those of us that weren't physically already capable. And I was definitely held up by a couple of my platoon mates. I'll never forget them or the time I spent (August 24th, 1997 to November 21st, 1997) at MCRD. That was my rite of passage in to manhood.
Thank you, sir for doing what I was never able! This makes me cry and I never even set foot on the bus. Make no mistake, I love ALL our men and women in uniform, but the United States Marine Corps is my absolute favorite!
My baby will become. United States Marine in about 8 hours, 19 minutes...he’s completing the last hours of the crucible in the rain there in San Diego. I can’t do the stations or the 48 mile hike in 54 hours but as a sign of support, I’ve only eaten 2 meals and doing my best to keep to only 6 hours of sleep. My son is sacrificing as you did, that’s the least I can do as a Devil Dog Mama in the making! Thanks for bringing me peace of mind in these final hours that I am praying for him and concerned for his well being. It’s good to know this will be a great memory. Thank you for your sacrifices & for your service! Semper Fi!
Damn, I haven't seen First Sergeant Ramirez since he was Sergeant Ramirez. He was always passionate about being D.I. Happy to see him making a career out of it.
We did not have this when I was in boot camp. We did not get the title until the day we graduated. This does not not matter to me Like Chesty Puller said Old breed, New Breed, It doesn't matter as long as it is the Marine breed. The Corps is in great hands I gradusted in 1984 from Company "M" 3rd Bn Plt. 3127 in February 1984.
