PPE on my L5P. Very happy with them. I use Wix on everything that PPE doesn’t make a filter for LOL
For those not wanting to spend $30 on a filter every change. It may be worth every other change for that magnet to help pull out the metal shaving periodically.
Absolutely, that is one angle I did not even consider. It's a very strong magnet and I am told by PPE that it can actually grab ferrous material as low as .5 micron.
Thanks for the comment!
The PPE filter is 50% at 10 microns 85% at 20 microns per PPE
The STP extended life (XL 10,000 mile filter rating) that I got at AutoZone is nicely built and actually does have a bypass valve, and is priced reasonably.
Great to hear ! I have it cut open in this video czcams.com/video/-Gj7lkG2TT8/video.html
Interesting to see the silicone adbv on the orange can Fram. I wish they’d come out with the Ultra that fits. I’ll be using the wix until anything better comes out.
Love these videos!edjucational
I use wix, get a lab test on the oil every couple oil changes have had zero issues
Very interesting. I expected more from the Delco Gold, but it seems kind of cheap. The PPE is great, but too expensive and not necessary for typical use. Personally, I'll probably go with the Wix when I get my truck, since I don;t plan to exceed 5k-6k drains.
Great videos. Now I’m thinking what drop in air filter like AFE dry filter or k&N . With the factory intake performs better. Especially with that PPE intake tube.
I lean towards dry
I look at it this way , my 20 year old Duramax LB-7 has had regular oil changes since I’ve owned it and oil and filters are still WAY CHEAPER than an engine rebuild or replacement. I used genuine AC-Delco filters on it for years , but recently switched to the longer & more expensive PPE oil Filters , and you know what ??? My oil has NEVER been cleaner . Weeks , even months now after an oil change my oil looks as clean on the dipstick as the day I changed it . That extra large media surface and finer micron rating DOES make a noticeable difference. If it means I’ll get the soot & any other debris out of oil for longer life & longer service intervals then I’m all in for that . At $30 in my opinion it’s money well spent . To each his own though . Buy cheap products ,get cheap quality & results that may be not optimum for lifespan of your investment. Just saying .
Nice
That ppe looks great, just not sure how i feel about oversized filters interfering with oil pressure
I stocked up on STP gold filters and they look great, you can get them in a bundle from autozone with the M1 ESP X2 oil which is dexos D. Bundling takes the oil from $12 per quart to about $6.
The larger filter will not interfere with oil pressure. Once the filter is filled-up with oil... after the initial startup post oil-change, the oil pressure won't be affected in the slightest. The only thing that would be affected is the level in the pan, due to the larger volume of oil staying outside of the pan in the filter. You'd just have to compensate a bit by adding some additional oil on fill-up.
What STP filter # did you use for your LM2 (LZ0)?
The stp do feel solid!
@NMTRUCKER, the one that came with my bundle was an STP S45008XL.
@@keithfreeman439 Thanks! This must be a recent addition to the LZ0/LM2 oil filter list. I have been using Mobil 1 ESP X2 oil with an AC DELCO UPF66R. Looks like the STP filter has 15 micron filtering and flow rate of 15 GPM. Definitely have to check that out!
Just a correction here. None of them have a bypass valve. What you have on the PF66, Fram and K&N are just the leaf springs that hold the filter against the the top cap. However, their design flaw could allow oil through the seam between the leaf spring and filter media casing. Not impressed with that.
As nice as the PPE is, it's priced itself out. Our oil changes are already expensive enough because of the unicorn dust impregnated oil ($22/qt in Canada), I'm not going to make it worse with a $50CAD filter. My next oil change going forward, I'm likely going to the Wix and keep using magnets on the outside.
I agree the PPE is a pricey filter but there is so much to it that goes into that price. The goal on this video was to show everyone the insides of each filter to help people make the best choice for their needs and budget.
As far as the bypass goes, that is the design of the bypass and it is considered a bypass relief even if it does not have the traditional spring type valve built in. When the targeted pressure of the media is exceeded, the leaf spring will collapse and let the oil through. I included a link to the fram filter specs but all of the leaf spring style filters call it the same. :www.fram.com/fram-extra-guard-oil-filter-spin-on-ph12447
