People hate on Fram all the time. I’ve used them for 4 decades with no issues.
It's the "ORIGINAL" Orange Can of DEATH we HATE ON..I've used the ULTRA FRAM GOLD filter
Only those too stupid realize u don’t build a 3-5 k oil filter like a tank.😂
The orange original is garbage. Have had failures on tractors and refuse to use them anymore. The higher levels of fram look nice but I've got a sour taste in my mouth from them. I'm sure the gold is fine. I'll stick with my wix and oem filters
They're so bad Honda and Subaru use them as OEM supplier.
@@XenomorphLV426 that's why today I did an oil change on my 2019 Honda Civic coupe ex-t. First time since new it's had a non OEM filter on it. Used a made in USA wix today, with my favorite Castrol edge oil. I'm at 55,000 miles, and can't believe I only recently found out the Honda A02 filter is made by fram. I'll be using wix and Baldwin filters from now on.

Even fram's cheapest oil filter beats more expensive competitors at efficiency lol.
Changing the oil/filter early and often is the best defense to premature engine wear.
I change the oil/filter (full synthetic 0W-20, OEM filter) every 3,800-4,200 miles.
89,300 trouble-free miles with my 2018 Civic EX-T. I might go sooner after100,000 miles.
In my real world experience, over the last several years and five different automobiles, using synthetic oil and the Fram Ultra oil filters I have been very impressed with how clean the oil stays and the Fram filters have always performed well for me. I was a BIG skeptic when they first came out I thought '"This Fram filter must be a scam. There is no way it will stay clean or last 10,000 miles" (I know they now claim 20k miles) but for $10 I was willing to try. I had been using conventional filters and synthetic oil already and had one car whose oil always stayed pretty clean and the second car the oil would get darker faster so I decided to compare them, both using the Fram ultra filters and synthetic oil. I was absolutely shocked. The oil in the cleaner of the two engines NEVER turned brown, not even slightly. NINE THOUSAND MILES and it still looked like honey. I changed it because I am an old school mechanic and just HAD to bc it had been so long. The dirtier of the two engines the oil stayed much cleaner than usual and I changed it at Seven thousand or so just because of time. I have been using them on both cars ever since for years. The oil stays clean and the Fram ultra filters work great. Three other cars all get the Fram ultra filters and synthetic oil now and all perform great. Thank you for cutting them open and showing us the insides. I appreciate your work making these videos.

I work at Walmart as an Auto Care Tech, and I've put both these filters in a lot of vehicles.
Personally, I use the Fram Ultra in my vehicles, but if the Fram were out of stock, I'd have no issues using the Mobil 1. I also use Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil.
Anyway, Kudos for doing an honest apples to apples comparison here. Usually you get the K&N and Napa Gold/Wix fanboys who will cut open one of their filters then cut open an Orange box Fram filter, then poo poo all over the Fram for being an inferior filter by comparison. I usually call them out for doing that and challenge them to redo their test and use the Fram Ultra in comparison because that's the real competitor to their favorite filters. The Orange box, the Fram Extra Guard filter is more intended as their basic level filter, and it's marketing isn't intended to go against the K&N or Wix/Napa Gold type of filters. So thank you for doing a legitimate comparison here.

I have no idea how to check purge Solenoid at the moment, running Alcohol,Free gas now for PEA FUEL injection Cleaner/maybe condition….etc. Yes wallyWorld, so Busy in Pharmacist’s Job, and Pharmacy was a little trying ( supposedly ima, eligible for rehire,etc)…..!,,,,
Ps: I been a NAPA GOLD/ KN/ Royal purple WARRIOR.. though just to BOSS( assuming Flow is specs,etc)..Interestingly, I used the K&an AIR FILTERS on four vehicles for many years; never had an issue KNOWN(* e.g MAF OILING, DUST / grit getting past, engine wear) & seemed to improve Performances…BUTHiGH DUST/dirt & problems , withh MAF soiling with K& N oil; convinced me to OEM AIR FILTERS AND CHECK FREQUENTLY( change, rotate)…….really interesting, tried a NAPA GOLD AIR for 2015 DODGE 4 Cyl Nd it would not fit & close in air box ( close , May have been able to jam/ finess, bit slight firmer plastic onNAPA GOLD)::::::FIRST TIME EVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH GOLD NAPA STUFF!!!!!! ( lot of extra ru. It too , to,get OEM & take Napa back, irritating)…….
@@opera93 Can't help with any suggestions on your Canyon, those trucks did have a few issues with them. Does it throw any check engine lights when it no-starts then runs again? Have that checked if the check engine light comes on. I don't think the type of fuel you're running would cause any issues like that, unless the fuel filter needs to be replaced, which is anytime you think of them on any GM vehicle.
Good luck reapplying with the Pharmacy. Just remember to apply for a few different departments just in case Pharmacy isn't hiring, you can at least get in the door and be ready if a position opens.

I have used the Fram XG10060 Ultra Synthetic filter in my 5.7 hemis for years. No issues. Good startup and running pressure. No leaks. No oil related noise or failures. Good price for a premium filter. Oil stays clean as long as any other filter. Used with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic 5w20. Key is change early / change often. Thanks for the vid.

@@classicjay7786 Good question. Depends on a few factors. Have I been driving more city than highway miles? Have I been towing? How does the oil look and feel? Basically the MAX I ever go is 5k miles (8k kilometers). Even though the filter and oil I use are rated for much longer I go with "it's cheaper to change the oil than fix the Hemi". I buy a few changes worth of oil when it goes on sale for half price at Walmart or Canadian Tire.
I used this in my tahoe and I had to go back to oem ac Delco. Lost 10psi oil pressure with the fram ultra. And these chevys need high pressure for the failure prone afm. Something about the oem ac delco flows better. Its a known thing apparently that afm motors need oem oil filters (chevy)

I have used fram filters for over 15 years on different vehicles. I have never had an issue.

I recognized those two filters right away. I have used both. They fit on my 2019 Traverse and 2015 Acadia.
Fram also makes a Titanium version that is only available at Advance Auto. Same as the Ultra Syn.

I just used one of those Ultra XG10575 filters on my truck, & on my box it says perfect seal gasket, where yours says durable metal screen. Mine was from Rural King.

I like the fram a little better due to the micron rating @20 vs 30. Both are constructed well. On my work van I use supertech 2.97 filter with havoline pro ds 5w30 6 qts. I can change oil for under $20. I compared the supertech to the ac delco and they are made the same. Same manufacturer

@@WhipCityWrencher but what if the 20 micron filter goes into bypass sooner at say 5000k than the 30 micron filter filtering throughout the full 10k or 20k interval the oil filter companies put on there box it’s good for 1 year or 20k but they won’t say if it filters for that long.. they might mean the filter media will hold up but they not saying it will filter for the full interval.

and as far as what the filter companies say, I take that with a grain of salt and some common sense mixed in. 🤣The 20-micron filter will catch more stuff and probably go into a bypass mode faster than the 30-micron filter. This is why I always say I personally would not go over 5k miles on any oil filter. I have a video on my own vehicle oil filter after about 4k miles and you can see all the carbon that it caught, if I had left this same oil filter in there for 20k miles the oil would probably have a hard time going thru the filter media and as a result a lot of bypasses. Funny because the XG10575 Fram and Mobil 1 212 A are the filters i use in my 2018 Transit 150 with the Ecoboost 3.5L. Both are great filters. 116k miles later and she's running good. I do use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 because of the long time in between oil change intervals, about every 10k miles.

I’ve never in all my years working on cars have heard of an oil filter exploding. Fram is a good filter. Ultra is there top dog and for $9.00 at Walmart is very good. Ultra is full synthetic materials screen backing snd silicone ADBV.

I just did a change and used the Fram. Some kind of flow test needs to be set up with a known volume and pressures in and out monitored at different temperatures. Micron rating is a major factor. Flow and bypass tests would be helpful. So far I have seen no such tests.
That's up to the manufactures to provide that kind of information. Such equipment cost lots of money. Here's someone that does these tests. But I don't know what he charges or if he even does them for the public.

My oil seems to stay cleaner with the Fram ultra oil filter. After three months I can still see through the oil to the dip stick. Best oil filter for $10.00 at Walmart.

I check my oil now and then even though it burns nothing, but looks clean. Only after about 6 months do I notice it starts looking darker and I change it. "Oil is cheap" engines are not. Most of what I get is on rebate sales anyway here's a good Pennzoil rebate I did it twice.

They both work. It is freakin oil filter, not jet engine. 10 bucks and you good for 6 months if you have quality synth oil. Maybe a year if using top quality year rated syn oil. It really depends on driving conditions though.

I was debating on these two same exact filters for my 2022 F-150 5.0 engine. I went with the Fram Ultra with Castrol Edge extended performance oil. It's the first oil change at 3k miles.

These are the same filters my wife’s Buick LaCrosse takes. The Mobil 1 is a pain to use. It is entirely too long and sits up against the fan shroud. It’s nearly impossible to use any kind of wrench on it or even feel like you can adequately tighten the filter by hand. It also rubs the fan shroud.

Been using Fram filters for decades and they are indeed "top shelf" quality and performance.
I believe fram ultra was codeveloped with honda to make fram a main supplier . Dont remember. But there was a reason i kept hunting these down online for almost 20 bucks when they came out. Took a long time to be available locally. I drive hard like its normal driving after this filter came out. Nothing felt off.
Both are great filters! The Construction of the pleats etc i think i would be going with the mobile one route

Been using FRAM ULTRA XG7317 with full synthetic oil for my 05 Honda mini van, and still run like a champ for a 150k plus miles vehicle. Very good quality oil filter, won’t buy anything else unless otherwise.

I wouldn't buy anything from Fram except their Ultra line. Everything else is junk with paper end caps. Regarding this test, I would go with the Fram Ultra simply because of their ability to filter smaller particles, though I was impressed with the larger surface area on the Mobil 1 filter.

Yep, Ultra is the only filter from the Fram line that I will use. Just my preference for it's construction type.

@@faxmen09 I attended a seminar where one of the engineers was from Fram. First question asked of him?? Paper end caps lol. He loved the question... saying it gave him the opportunity to clear up any myths regarding this. The end caps aren't paper or cardboard... they are a synthetic material selected for its ability to adhere to the filter media using a special resin. This was done to build a superior filter at a lower cost. Lots of R&D went into that configuration according to him. He said it blows them away seeing people cut apart their filters and ridiculing the synthetic components... just calling it cardboard.

Install a remote mount oil filter. The type that uses 2 spin on filter elements. Install 1 filter with a low micron rating and 1 with a high flow rating. You get the best of both worlds. Now install a bypass oil filter kit, Amsoil sells bypass oil filters. I think they are less then 10 microns.
Also put on a pre starting oil pressurizing pump to circulate before cranking, oh and don't forget an oil pre heater, about 160F would be a good number. If you really love your vehicle drive it into a large plastic in your garage , seal it, pump out the air and fill the bag with Argon gas. Make sure to throughly wash and dry the car before pushing it into the bag! All of the above have been done in various types of engines and vehicles !

I just bought a Fram XG6607 from walmart in Nevada for $8.97 & the comparable mobile 1 filter, the M110A was $11. So in Nevada Fram is cheaper.
it would seem, the people who complain about fram filters the most.are the ones who buy the cheapest fram they can.& probably complain that there chevy isnt a caddilac.
A lot of CZcamsr videos have made the Fram orange can filter look like the worst oil filter in the world.
I have to admit I'm not a fan of the endcaps on them filters either, but the Fram Ultra is a very good USA-made oil filter, and you can still get some of them at Walmart for around $9 bucks.
See the last 6 years I’VE BEEN RIGHT!!! I’ve ONLY USED That Fram ultra and I’ve always been told it’s the same as regular oil filters and I’ve always used it and changed it every 4500miles it may not be the best of the best BUT ITS BETTER THAN THE NORMAL WIX

@Tee Mack Yeah.. I don't know what is better than an Ultra... The media alone beats the Mobil easily.. as well as the Wix XP or anything .. Fram just needs to ramp it up a little bit with QC. .. The Silver Fram Tough Guard has equivalent media to the Mobil.
Well you are comparing apples to oranges. The Fram Ultra is their top end filter. You should compare that one to the WIX XP filter, which is their top end model.
Interesting video! While counting holes gives a basic idea, there's more to flow rate than just the number.
For science lovers, there's a concept called "Reynolds Number" (Re) that considers how the fluid behaves! It can help compare flow efficiency between the plates.
Fram is transitioning away from the wire backing (cheapening) on the XG line, but the new media is slightly better filtering specs. that means you don't know for sure if you are getting the wire backing or not. There is some indication on the box.
Yeah, the box alone doesn't tell you because they put the old design in newer boxes and vice a versa. You have to look down the center hole with a flashlight and see if you can see the wire backing.
Saw a video about this, if this is confirmed, I’ll be switching to another oil filter or go back to OEM for my Odyssey! I have been a huge fan of this product for a very long time, my van is 17 years old and I usually use Fram when changing the oil.
@@tamomo100 The new ultra is still a good oil filter. Just that they took out the wire backing and made the filter media synthetic with cellulose backing to keep the media stronger. It may filter even better than the old one according to the numbers. But I wish that they had left it alone. More filter media area should mean longer filter life.Filters will filter more with age due to material on the surface.The amount the filter can hold to me is more important then weight especially with long miles of use.

Not afaik, reads like urban legend and/or internet blather. M1 did change manufacturers not long ago from Champ Labs to Purolator. Still made in USA though.
Mine is made in Texas. Says on inner carton. I bought as many as I can. Awesome filters. Analysis proves it
The centre part of the filter is a different circumference which looks like the fram has more room inside for the oil to circulate

Between these two, I'd rather use the Fram because of the 99% down to 20 microns. But really I'd like to filter out even smaller particles. Do you know of any such filters? In any case, I'll be changing at 6000 miles or earlier with my Subaru 2.0i.
I doubt you'll find a better micron rating without restricting oil flow.
Yeah they have to let the oil flow through. Just put a fram ultra synthetic in my honda accord 2003 and plan to change after 12k miles. A lot of people talk bad about fram which seems justified with their standard filters but the ultra synthetic seems pretty solid from everything I’ve seen online
Why even that matter lmao. Many Subarus even using oem filter and they still last long. Flow is always more important
Purolator makes that Mobil 1 filter now.. it’s just a blue purolator one filter that you can get at advance auto for $8.99... mobil 1 just told them to paint the can black and slap our sticker on them and let us charge $10 for it at the local Walmart. So you essentially paying an extra $1 for black paint and sticker. You have more pleats in the Mobil 1 filter because it’s a cheaper material

This is not true. The efficiency of the two filters referenced here are drastically different. The blue pure one is 99% at 20 microns, the Mobil 1 is 99% at 30 microns. The blue pure one is not the same as the Mobil 1.
Actually, the Mobil 1 shown is a Purolator Boss can, with Purolator One internals. I’ve seen these Mobil 1 filters made by Champion too. The Champion ones I saw were well made from their highest line.
The can and internals may very well be mostly the same since Mann & Hummel have acquired quite a few of the filter manufacturers. However, the pure one and mobil one filter medias are different according to the listed specification.

I've used Fram in the past on my 01 F150 but I can buy the Motorcraft for 4$ vs 7$ for Fram .. so I go for Motorcraft ..
If you can get the Fram Ultra for $7, I'd go with the Fram.

Kind of new to this depth of discussion and using synthetic oil. If I change my synthetic oil every 4k to 5k, can I change the filter every other oil change? Its kind of a pain to get the filter off and on without making a mess. Every other would be great. Not being cheap, just wondering what you recommend.
You could, I prefer to change both at the same time.

I just picked up the fram ultra from Walmart for $9. Just for the record. Just got back now and was double checking, as I remembered a video giving high remarks for the fram. Turns out I remembered correctly.

I heard on the Fram filter the media is 3 layers thick. Is that true?

Fram media looks solid. But I think the overall design of the M1 is better. Specially the bypass valve design.
I usually buy Motorcraft oil filters as they're the best bang for your buck IMO. I've had start up issues due to poor drainback valves in my Fords that immediately went away with the Motorcraft filters, and I prefer their bypass valve. On my last oil change I couldn't find a FL-910s anywhere in town. I was comparing the Fram and Mobile 1 to each other. I chose the Mobile 1 for one reason; I don't like plastic bypass valves. I don't want any plastic in my oil filter to begin with (Personal preference. I'm aware it's a non issue, but I still don't want plastic in my oil filter.) Otherwise the media is definitely better on the Fram. I won't go over 7.5K on my oil so I don't care about their millage rating and I'm not going to only change the filter every other oil change. Oil and filters are cheap, but the engine is anything but cheap.

So to be clear. The Mobile 1 box says 99% efficient at catching particles 30 microns and larger. But it does not say it doesn't catch smaller particles. The marketing folks simply chose that 30 micron number since they can throw a big 99% number on the box.
Regardless, I'd rather use a Wix XP filter. Although I have a couple Mobile 1 M1-212A in my garage since they came as a deal with O'Reilly Auto Parts on my latest oil purchase.
True, it will catch some smaller particles, but 99% at 20 microns is still better than 99% at 30 microns. Both are good filters and your engine probably won't know the difference.😊

As best I heard the story second hand... Mobil opted for a longer/more pleat filter that only filtered down to 30 microns because they were serious about the 20,000 mile rating. In their tests, if the filter was too fine as in down to 20 microns or too short it would clog too easily. As it was explained to me, it was a trade-off.
If you aren't going 20,000 miles the finer filter is better... as in for folks that change their oil every 3,000 miles for example, but for folks with dirtier engines and folks that run their oil for long change intervals, a coarser media is better than by passing the media.
As to the screen... the soft "synthetic" media is like a cloth, while the paper like media is more rigid. The paper type media doesn't need the screen while the cloth does. The screen backer wouldn't benefit the paper filter while the cloth type couldn't work without it. So, you really can't award points for the screen.
A shorter/less surface area filter can filter as much as a longer/more surface area filter assuming it's designed in multiple layers. The top layer filters out the larger particles and the lower layers filter out the smaller particles. This should prevent the finer filter from clogging too quickly. That's a nice theory, but it depends on what size particles the filter encounters. If all of the particles are very fine, the course layer does nothing and the fine filter clogs.
Right or wrong, in designing their 20,000 mile filter the engineers at Mobil 1 were shooting for as close to zero clogs as possible, so they went for the most media and letting some of the smallest particles get through. In fairness, at a certain size the dirt particles really don't do much if any damage to the car as they are floating in a film of oil that's hopefully thicker than the particles.
In this case, the Mobil 1 filter is better and safer for long extended oil drain intervals while the Fram filter would be better up to the point it clogs and bypasses.
I'll add that when used together, both oil and filter... Mobil 1 guarantees their product for 20,000 miles. I know it's a guarantee that would be hard to collect on, but if you can prove that the oil and filter combo failed... they owe you a new engine. That's harder to prove when the same company doesn't make both the oil and filter.
The problem with that story is who wants to run their oil for 20K miles when it's not as clean as it could be. Also, Ive heard that most of the wear in an engine occurs with the 5-10 micron particles. I'd rather change the oil filter at 10K miles, and have cleaner oil the whole time.
Besides that, a lot of oil filters are starting to claim the 20K miles, Purolator Boss, even Supertech. I wouldn't run an oil filter that long, they dont cost that much. yet.

If I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic in my car you can bet I'd be using the Mobil 1 filter also. Very little doubt in my mind that this Mobil 1 filter was designed, developed and tested based on the formulation, viscosity and flow rate of the company's Mobil 1 synthetic. Further, I would say that the oil flow rate through the Mobil 1's louvers is superior to the Fran because the louvers are stamped across the entire medium and not just at specific measured spacings of the Fram. So although the louvers of the Mobile 1are smaller than the holes of the Fram they are more densely packed and by default a lot more of them allowing more oil to flow through the medium.
Mobil Makes their own oil, but Mobil does not make their oil filters. Champ Labs which is now owned by Mann + Hummel makes Mobil oil filters.
Now Mobil oil filters have a micron rating of 99% at 30 microns whereas the Fram Ultra has a rating of 99% at 20 microns. Hmm, Which one is better?
Look, both are very well-made oil filters and cost about the same also, but If you want better filtration, Fram Ultra is the one.
As far as oil flow goes I'm sure the engineers have studied the oil flow with machinery that gives them real results, and if they haven't, then a Big Shame on them.

I'm asking because I know nothing about how they get the numbers. What I do know is I've seen many videos on Project Farm and other channels where they often find that the stated claims are way off.
That said, it's clear that both are excellent filters. Your video has me wanting to go with the Fram, but I'm still having trouble getting past it being a Fram. I just don't trust the brand. I'm running full synthetic Mobile high mileage for the combo of price and cleaning ability. While they don't make their filter, their name is on it. So I went with that. Really, I think when comparing two highly rated filters, the oil becomes much more important when using full synthetic. The constant cleaning overrides the benefit of how small of a particle the filter can remove. I believe you need magnification to see particles both 20 and 30 microns.
@@billsmith3250 I can't say for sure if the micron ratings are correct, I have no way of testing them but I suspect that there probably close to what they claim. I started using the Purolator Boss oil filter because it's built so well, has a plastic screen backing, tough filter media, and a micron rating of 99% at 25 microns, (good enough for me). Also in my application, I seem to get a little better oil pressure maybe because of the bigger inlet holes?
I'll take the Mobil 1. Splitting the difference of 20 microns vs 30 microns isn't really relevant as nothing that small is really going to affect anything. However the actual capacity of the filter themselves matters. Last I heard Mobil 1 will hold up to 28g of waste/dirt. Nearly double what the majority of the competition. Hence the longer and larger surface area of the media. It's the only one I've used besides the factory Acdelco on my truck. The dealership used Acdelco and Mobil 1 oil as factory fill. (The first 4 changes were free/included) afterwards I've used Pennzoil ultra and Mobil 1 filters. I used Rotella gas truck oil once. Didn't like it. It seems to clump/sludge in the filter. Which I don't get as they're both Shell products.(don't think Rotella uses the same base oil tho) but that's just me. I'd run amsoil but given all the comparisons and the cost difference (especially with sale and rebates) Pennzoil is just too damn good and too cheap to justify spending the extra.
I used the rotella gad truck and it felt sluggish no acceleration etc.had a bad feeling then switch back to Rotella T6 and voila! like new again.
I dont like that plastic/nylon piece in the drainback valve, its susceptible to heat and degredation over time and could crack and fail, uses a coil spring but the plastic piece is a possible long range fail IMO.

Glad to have found you in my feed this morning, watched your latest video and searched for an M1 video. This was a great comparison. Have you considered developing a test to validate the micron filtration claims? I drank the M1 Kool Aid a while back but you pointing out the Fram claim of filtering down to a smaller micron size would sway me in the direction of the Ultra product if we could verify the advertising. A 20 Micron powder mixed in water poured on the media could be a quick way to test if the particle can sneak through. Not sure of the power of your microscope though. Maybe 2500x would allow you to detect the presence of 20 micron particles that got through.

Fram could be hate. But some higher end one are good. Fram New Endurance is like the Amsoil filter. Fram is Like STP fuel additives you will find it at almost every gas station and local stores.
That's what I look for. Filtration and flow rates. I would use the the finer filtration and change it more often. I've never went more than 5k miles. I've been running autozone brand 10w30 synthetic oil and Fram filters in my 08 tundra since 9k miles. It has 298k now. developed first valve gasket leak at 289k.

Ol blue has never been in the shop for major repair. Fluids and tires. That's it. Didn't even change factory brakes until 210k.
For price, efficiency & capacity, I'll take the Fram TG or XG. Some have claimed that the XG causes knocks in ls engines due to flow issues, but I'm nearing 3k miles on this filter for my 05 silverado and I haven't experienced that issue. Failure of the oil pick up tube o-ring is a notorious issue on these ls engines and will cause knocking.

I've used Mobile 1 synthetic oil with all 3 different grades of FRAM oil filters, yes even their "inferior" orange filters with no problems on my 1987 Mazda B2200 truck.. Recently I tried the top of the line Mobile 1 oil filter, but to my surprise everytime I started the engine it would clatter like crazy for the first few seconds of running like it was dry starting and starving for oil. Switched back to FRAM oil filter and no more "dry" starts. So I'm sticking with FRAM despite all the claims people make that Mobile filters are better. I'm surprised I have good experience with Mobile 1 synthetic oil but not with their filter.

You may have gotten a bad Mobil oil filter. IMHO Fram's are as good or better oil filters and you can't go wrong using them, they have a better micron rating.
That Mobile one filter looks exactly like the 80$ FoMoCo filter you did on another video, only difference looks like the glue and Mobile one has slightly better filtration with its extra pleats.

When Fram was a Bendix company back in the seventies we used Fram filters exclusively. I only had two bad ones, a PH8A that didn’t have the plate threaded, and a PH13A that leaked at the crimp. For the thousands or more that our shop installed these were the only two that caused problems. Granted we never cut any apart to check the insides, but we had no reason to. Obviously I couldn’t install the filter that wasn’t threaded, and the other leaked as soon as I started the car.

@sniper1334 It was probably a cartridge oil filter that collapsed. A friend of mine had a Mercedes ML320 with a cartridge type oil filter. He changed his own oil and found that the Mahle brand filter was the only one that didn’t collapse between oil changes. Any of the cheaper filters collapsed, didn’t matter what brand, the Mahle filter was twice the money but worked.

Do a review with the M1-212 not the 21A. The 212A is a lower grade filter than the 212. So I could see it being on par with FRAM.
They don't make them filters anymore. All the New Mobil oil filters being made have the suffix A.

Love the media on the Fram, but dislike the stamped spring. In the video you talked about it being sturdier, but would if liked to see how easy it was to bend.
Based upon price point of these two filters still going with my Wix or Napa brand (made by wix) especially when their are on the oil change specials.

I think the Fram has a better leaf spring than the Mobil, I could bend each one with my hands if I wanted to, but I have no type of gauge to show which one would take more effort to bend.

I am a Wix user but I always wonder where this notion comes from that a stamped leaf spring will somehow bend when used in a Fram filter? I have NEVER seen that happen but people keep talking about it as an urban legend. Same thing with "cardboard" endcaps and other Fram bashing talking points.
@@TranslatedAssumption i was looking at fram engineering video that they use the leaf spring because it evenly distribute pressure in the can vs the coil spring only applies pressure in the middle of the can. As for the fiber end caps they work just fine when you use the filter for the designed purpose and mileage interval Honda uses the TG7317 in there oem version and says you can changed it every other oil change and these engines are still getting 250-300k using a $6.87 filter I have no problem using the TOugh guard or ultra guard filters from fram.
So many comments and here is one more about filter media. While you can make statements about the construction materials used in the various filters when eyeballing them, you can't look at filter media and know anything about how it performs. For that you need very sophisticated light microscopy, nitrogen and mercury porosimetry instruments and a host of various calibrated fluorescent beads to perform filter challenge testing with various diameter beads. Designing and engineering various filter media is a multibillion dollar industry and expanded cellulosic filter media is still widely used in industry for filtering oil.
All engine oil filters use a depth style media. That means they trap particles throughout the depth of the media. Where the particle gets trapped is pretty random but this style of media has a much greater capacity for holding particulate matter and is much lower to clog under normal use. And let's not forget that almost all filter media is rated for trapping spherical particles while real world particles can be fine needles or shreds of metal shavings. And while you can specify the rate of particle entrapment in a single pass, the oil is recycled continuously so particles have many chances of being trapped.
Could it be that engine designers do not know about specific oil design criteria and allow the specialists at oil lubricating labs to make those design decisions for them? How about filter media engineering? The real question is what is the source of the filter media used in these different engine oil filters and how quickly do they load up and how efficient are they at trapping particles at any given size range. A really fine filter media may clog too quickly vs another one that has a much greater capacity for larger particles that create much greater engine wear. That is an engineering tradeoff and requires extensive engineering expertise to balance the variables efficiently. Imagine an elaborate dry sump oil filtration system that weighs more and costs more than the entire production engine? Not so useful as a daily driver. But your oil would stay clean forever or until it broke down chemically. You get some of that engineering on a long haul turbodiesel engine for trucking but it would not fit under the hood of your passenger car.
Driving conditions and frequent oil filter changes plus air filter changes can go a long way towards making the case for using a lower cost filter and changing it out more frequently. The industry is tending towards the opposite with a longer period between oil changes and increased service intervals. That makes sense when dealer service charges are ever increasing but not as much for the do it yourself crowd who enjoys the maintenance of their vehicles. All food for thought.

After all the Fram oil filters I bought over the years because I thought they were good, finding out they are the lousiest of all, makes me so mad I'll never buy an Autolight anything ever again! They should be called SHAM oil filters!

NOT NEEDED. Only thing that matters if filter ability. Bigger can means more resistance to oil flow. Only thing that matters is oil analysis
To evaluate the steel core perforations you need to make a rig in which one end is plugged/blocked off and the other end has a container affixed with a measured quantity of oil. Release the oil and time it for the flow and then you have a proven answer to which one is better. I use NAPA filters and change synthetic oil @ 5,000 miles.
The Napa Platinum is a nice oil filter, on sale this month.
