Oiled currently, But I want to switch to a snorkel setup and the kit comes with a dry filter Don't know if it would make a difference or matter if I could swap out the dry for oiled. just something I'll have to look into when it comes time.
I go with a dry filter. It's a lot easier to maintain. I used an oiled filter once, and it wasn't very easy to clean. I also was afraid of over-oiling it.
I've used a oiled one for years, should probably clean it more often. Dont really notice a difference. Is there a way to contact you truckmaster? Have something id like to run by you.
I prefer oiled. Iâm partial to K&N filters . Since weâre on the subject, do you know how to clear âcheck air filter systemâ warning on 2020 duramax? I recently replaced the stock air filter with a oiled K&N drop in replacement filter on my 2500AT4 HD, a week later the warning popped up and I cannot clear it. Did I just mess up my L5P by replacing the filter with a K&N? Help!!!
Have banks snorkel KandN.ram air on my d max for 10 years never an issue I go to Dez quite often.
I am dry filter all the way. And when it gets dirty I just remove it and hit it with my 15 horse industrial compressor and clean/blow it out and reinstall it. No oily mess to deal with.
Been running my 2 oiled filters (AFE) on my Duramax for more than 15 years now. I live out in the sticks, and sure the filter gets caked up, but I just swap it out with my other prepared filter and I'm good to go for another year. Solid and cheap, and I never ever had problems with my mass air flow sensor. Oiled is the way to go.

A little over a year ago a place I do some of my duramax work (Dakota Diesel) was cleaning of some of there inventory and told me if there something on that table you can use go ahead and take it. It was a AFE air filter for my 2002 gmc truck. I was very impressed with there filter I just got an AFE oiled air filter for my 2012 gmc truck.
I use an oiled air filter on my 2019 Duramax and has held up well and always have a spare or two on my shelf. No MAF sensor issues so far. Thanks for the video and the shop tour.
I've used oiled filters for ten-years and 100K plus miles. My Manifold Air-Flow Sensor (MAF) has never become oily. If using a round air filter, there are foam socks that can go around the filter for an extra layer of protection.
I run banks ram air intake on my lb7 and it's wet. I love it. Never had any issues. Before this I had the k&n cold air and never had any issues with it
Once again Truckmaster you produced a fantastic show. As a machinist walking through the shop really brought back some good memories. But thankful that I am fully retired lol. What a great group of folks there. Very good explanation of the differences between the two filters. Oil all the way. I toss mine in a bucket of water and Dawn soap and let her soak while changing oil. After about 30, swish it around in the soap for a few minutes flexing the ribs (no brush)( if the water is nasty, you're clean or at least cleaner), hit it with the garden hose (inside out) for a few minutes. Lightly shake it out, Set out to dry in the sun. Lightly (I mean a couple of squirts of filter oil per side - donât go full âEarlâ with it). Reinstall.
The ribbed cloth like material lets more air flow and the oil helps catch the smaller dirt particles without restricting the flow, like paper. Iâve been doing this for over 200k + milesâŠ..same filter, same method. If this is messing up your mass air sensor, you are likely using way too much oil. đ
I live on very dirty roads, oil would stick dust and plug the filter within a week, even trip the suction gauge, I only by dry filters now.
Same here, I live offroad waay out of town and I got tired of my oiled filter caking up every month. I even used 2..1 always ready.
I've had a Banks ram air for about three years now on my 2018 GMC 3500HD L5P and it has worked great. It is a oiled filter and I clean and recharge ever other oil change.
I stay with my stock Donaldson Power Core air filter on my 07.5' GMC. I remember when Donaldson Power Core was available in the Volant air filter kits and they did great. I change mine every oil change and there's no dust in the intake tube.
I like oiled filters. S&B had the best recharge kit around. I ran theirs on my 2011 6.7 Cummins. I run plain Jane oem fikters in my LLY and LB7 with stock intakes.
I run oiled air filters in my semi and my 6.0! The paper air filters for my semi cost over $200 each and I have two of them. Iâve had these oiled filters for around 2 years with over 200k miles with them.
My cummins has been running a s&b oiled filter since 2012 253000km no issues I clean my turbo off once and awhile from oil build up. Runs good no dust in tube.

Was running a AFE oiled filter on my lml. Factory oiled. Ruined 2 maf sensors. Swapped to dry. No more issues. Again, factory oiled filter. I did not oil them myself. Not worth changing out maf sensors. Dry for me.
Itâs interesting your not the only comment about oiled AFE products going bad
I have never had a problem with the oiled filter. I have used them for over a dozen years, and never had a problem with over oil or contamination on the the MAF. I like having a filter that will last longer than once. Cleaning and re-oiling is simple.
We ran K&N on race car so I have run one form 1993 on every truck Iâve had. If you donât over oil and allow it to tack up before you run it you should have no issues. I keep a paper filter to run while I clean the K&N . Wash it, let dry to cool he next day, oil it and let it set to the next day before I run it. Never had any sensors or turbo issues,
I run the HSP CAI on my â15 and use the oiled filter from HSP. I have2 filters and I cycle them. One is cleaned and ready while the other is in the truck.

Josh, this might sound overkill but i have 2 oil filters. i wash 1 and put it in the basement near the dehumidifier to slow dry it. while i put the other 1 in the truck @ each oil change or 6 months. i also live on a dirt road. i also have one on my gas ford truck for over 100k miles on it. never an issue with sensors. she still rolling strong

Iâve had the Banks on my LB7 since 2010. A couple of years ago I bought a second filter. Swap them annually after I wipe out any excess oil. On my second MAS. Donât think thatâs too bad for a 20 year old truck.

My idea is aftermarket intake tube no aftermarket filter unless youâre getting up there into high horsepower the factory ones flow pretty dang good
They only one way to find out Josh do one with a dry filter and do one dry. But when you run a oil filter before your turbo. You will not get the same air flow because oil will not let the air flow freely
I donât quite like oiled as much because when it rains the oil just basically comes off once the filter gets kind of wet, and I donât always run a pre-filter because I canât control when the rainâs gonna hit. I know some peoples say you can leave the pre filter all the time but, when youâre on dirt roads and a bunch of other stuff, it doesnât help when it clogs up more easily. But hey my thoughts

I'm a dry filter guy. I prefer the AEM dryflow considering they are washable.
Running the Banks Ram air on both my LBZ and L5P. One is oiled, the other is dry. Didn't see a difference with either other than extra time to clean the oiled.
I've been running a Bank's oiled filter on my L5P since 18'.
He is wrong, I do all of my own maintenance, and would not touch an oiled filter with a 10' pole. Great video Josh.
Why is he wrong? Can you provide any tests? I don't doubt you have your reasons, and this is a highly debated topic, but you didn't provide any proof or reasons to the contrary
@@AllThingsBoost first off, they filter less, which means they let more dirt pass through. An oiled filter is a hard on sensors, especially if too much oil is used. Paper filters work excellent, why reinvent the wheel. The best filter on the market are the Donaldson filters.

Go to Project Farm you tube channel for detailed demonstration of how well oil treated filters prevent your engine. Bottom line they donât. Stay with fleetguard or similar to protect your turbo diesels.
I always have a spare cleaned oiled filter ready to go.

Haven't had a diesel ever but as far as my gas truck goes I put an over oiled filter on before and my MAF went bad real quick.
Awesome job Josh!!! I have K N filter and my idea is we don't soak the filter in oil. So it's not submerged in oil, like motor oil. It's a spray film of oil. I love the K&N but thought to check into HSP. Awesome job guys, keep it up.
My buddy use to run K&N and found a lot of dust adhered to the tube past the filter.

Have always had Oil filters on both!!
Dry filter. No worry about sensors. And a better chance it won't gum up and clog completely. Oiled will keep collecting until 0 air passes through.and that's not good. Dry is cheap and user friendly
I think for the purpose of reach and video performance, this should have been a 5 minute video with a longer version (this full 23 minute video) available on a patron or similar platform. For such a short "Oiled or No?" question that doesn't involve a lot of complicated context, I think you're leaving a lot of views on the table given this videos length. Love your videos, just wanna see you grow faster so you can do more incredible stuff for the community! Just my opinion also.
Ah...ha! Maybe this is why I keep popping a code for the MAF.. I have a K&N washable filter for my 2007 LBZ. Over and over I keeps popping the 101 code, even have replaced the MAF and the previous owner did as well 2 other times. This all started when he added the cold air intake and the oiled filter.

I live in a dry and dusty area and the oiled filters just get dirty really fast so I prefer the dry flow because I think that oiled filter doesnât filter as well and I think it can have more problems

get the recharge kit for your filter just comes with the cleaner spray and oil spray. wash it let dry then spray with I light coating of oil. I usually wash mine twice then leave it in the sun or somewhere dry before re oiling
I have a large reoil bottle with a drop oiler cap. I put a row of oil on top of the pleat along it's length. If you have a panel filter you can oil both sides. I've use Simple Green spray cleaner on the filter to clean it. I'll let it dry overnight. You can put a paper towel under the air filter overnight to assure you haven't oiled the filter so much that it drips oil. After you do it once you'll have a feel for it. I think oiled filters are great because of their reuse capability. They pay for themselves over the life of the vehicle several times.

Replaced plenty of aftermarket oiled filters because people don't maintain them. Dirty oiled filter causes all kinds of driveability issues.
HSP is telling me they don't make LBZ Y bridge anymore do you know anything about this?

i run a mesh filter in my 08 duramax. after first wash i run it dry ever since, and then normal servicing. was worried bout the oil on the mas so i run it dry ur thought on that?

What does every factory air filter do? Dry. Thatâs my take and thatâs what I stick to! What I saw on my LB7 was too much oil and you coat the intake pipe. Too little and itâs got dirt. Dry, neither. Just my 2 cents
Friend of mine runs an oiled filter on his Duramax, eats up his MAF sensor once a year. He refuses to switch, havenât found any other explanation for the MAF going bad so much.

The way i look at it is Iâm guessing these oil filters are similar to k and n style filters. Yes those do give you the most power. But as far a filtering power goes. They are horrible. Look at project farms comparison of various stock filters to k&n. The particle count is hugely higher (hence whats getting into your motor). If you want to truly protect your motor you would stick with stock intake but of course auto enthusiasts cant do that. If Iâm not mistaken when oiled filters are made they use a different material that one holds the oil and two they use less material or pleats due the oil is supposed to do part of the filtering. I have used oiled filters before and never been too happy with them. I would wash them let them dry for 24 hours then add oil and would let it soak in slow, i would add very little oil. And then after driving on the street for less than 5k miles. There would be cakes built in it from the oil and junk. So for me, i now run dry filters with a sock. Best option i found.
S&B Dry. I heard oiled doesnât play well with the LML MAF sensor. Didnât want to risk it and find out.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe technically dry paper filters filter down to a finer micron level than an oiled foam filter. However, in dusty dirty conditions a dry paper filter will get plugged in no time where an oiled foam filter will be able to handle it much longer before getting plugged. Depends on the application would have been the short answer lol.
I've looked at the inside of an oiled filter and could see holes where sunlight is coming through. I trust dry, I don't want to risk grains off sand coming through those holes.

Had a oil leak start at the known place. Didnât put the 2 together until I heard a Cummins tech mention itâŠ
Hello Josh. You sure do your research to bring information about different things to bring to all of the guys and girls who drive diesel trucks.
I lean toward dry for the simple fact that you never have to worry about getting too much oil on your filter and foul up your MAF sensor.

Josh, on my LMM apon purchase I bought a KLM oiled filter on the stock intake. I had issues from the word go with my MAF throwing a code , luckily I installed a Edge CTS 2 to clear the code. Even got to a point where I was covering with cardboard to restrict air flow somewhat. Then I purchased the HSP intake that turned into a major problem, couldn't go 300 yards and boom went a code, it was a dry filter and I purchased the dust screen because of a dry filter. I messaged HSP for help they thought maybe help, and they suggested I put the pipe in backwards, I didn't. Long story short I was getting way to much air and the sensor was throwing a code constantly. What I ended up doing was taking a Wal-Mart shopping bag rapping it around the filter taping to hold it in place restricting flow in half and that fixed it. I love the HSP because what ever the temperature is outside is the same going into the turbo! Not like the factory that picks up the engine heat when your traveling.

Love my '06 Sierra 2500hd crew cab LBZ duramax & just finished a 2 year frame & body refurbishing. Only has 171k on it and "now" this truck & of course engine, will probably out live me. 1 of the best engines ever made, treat it right & it'll be priceless to you.

A warm bucket of hot water and Dunk it in and out The hot water breaks down the oil so it will come off with the dirt Then you rinse in the sink from the inside let Dry then then re oil and you're good
I have used oiled filters for 30 years. I have not had any problems. I have had the engine oil tested and it has not shown any contamination.

I use K&N filters. I lightly oil the filter and let it sit. I then check for dry spots and add a little oil to those spots.

So...the oiled filter element flows more freely with less fine mesh. Then you spray on the oil which catches smaller debris. Oil turns the element mucky and would clog more quickly imho. I'm not that easily swayed...at ALL. I do like the mesh prefilter bag. On my commercial lawnmowers we have paper filters and a foam pre filter. The paper one lasts a long time.
