0:00 Introduction: Do we need carbohydrates?
0:45 Simple vs. complex carbohydrates
1:30 Vegetable carbs
1:45 Carbohydrates and fiber
2:08 Carbohydrates in food
2:39 Carbohydrates in fruit
3:52 Carbohydrates in grains and starches
5:34 Summary: Do we need carbohydrates?
In this video, we’re going to talk about carbohydrates. The primary function of carbohydrates is to provide the body with energy. Many people think that carbohydrates are your only source of energy, but the body is able to utilize protein and fat for energy as well.
Carbohydrates are classified as either simple or complex. Simple carbohydrates include foods like table sugar, honey, and agave nectar. They are absorbed quickly by the body, giving you a burst of energy.
Simple carbohydrates spike the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Insulin lowers your blood sugar after you consume simple carbohydrates, causing you to crash.
Complex carbohydrates take longer for the body to process because of additional components such as fiber.
Vegetables contain carbohydrates along with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. You get the majority of your vitamins and minerals from vegetable carbs, as well as fiber to feed the microbes in your intestinal flora.
Beans and fruits are carbohydrates that can be good for some people; however, they contain a lot of carbs. If you are trying to lose weight or if you have a slow metabolism, it may be beneficial to limit these foods.
Grains are refined carbohydrates that can be very hard on the digestive system. Grains are not very nutrient-dense, so I it's best to avoid them.
Similar to grains, starches are low in nutrients and turn into sugar fairly quickly. I recommend avoiding starches if you are trying to lose weight.

He so wanted to say at loudly: we don't need carbs. But he can't, so he don't get in to the debate. But now, in 2020 he could say it loudly and clearly. Because we all trust him the most.

You make a great point about the knowledge of food. Many of us have that confusion about food, because we've been fed so much misguided information about what is good for us and what is not. And some of the information we have heard over the years about certain foods has been completely wrong. And I like how Dr. Berg tells us in the video that what doesn't work for one person, might work for another.
Hi I started about two weeks ago. I cut out the sugar and carbs. Ive lost about 3 pounds. I only need to lose 20 pounds. I don't have the excessive cravings for carbs. I'm able to not be hungry at night.

I follow everything he says. I’m finally starting to shed this toxic weight off my mid section. I’m doing tons of veggies and salads. I absolutely agree with him about the carbohydrates. They are a “dirty” source of fuel and the increased insulin levels are very very bad. I started feeling really really bad and I’m finally turning it around. I definitely feel as though the keto diet is saving my life right now. My body is responding quite well!

Thank you for the video. Well put together. And tackles health, weight loss and weight gain. So you've answered questions that relate to everybody's body and goals. Good video.
The thing about all this is I need to keep watching Dr. Berg's videos- at least one day, even on weekends, or I tend to forget what I am doing and go back to my old, tired, carby, sugary routine. Dr. Berg keeps me aware and awake.
The last phrase killed me 5:34. We DON'T need carbohydrates. We need minerals and vitamins.
He said we do need carbohydrates for our vitamins and minerals and he meant the carbohydrate in vegetables. Vegetables contain carbohydrates and we do not require the extra dose that is in most bread and grains. Consume only brown rice and potatoes if you want extra carb. Correct me if I am wrong.
?
Regular consumption of brown rice is also said to be harmful by different research due to presentation of arsenic

if you want to eat fruits, eat seasonal fruit! There is a reason if mother nature gives us plenty of fruits in summer and almost none in winter! I really appreciate your videos dr. Berg. Dr. Berg, you're the best. A lot of misleading keto diet experts out there.
I doubt you have heard other keto experts be misleading, they are not talking about a non-keto diet as dr. berg was talking about here. Here he talked about a low carb, but not a carb free diet. Dr. Berg also has talked about the safe way to have a zero carb diet, BUT you're now needing to consume the less desirable cuts of meats from only grass-fed/wild fished animals so you get the "carbs" and vitamins through the animal as your body takes the over consumption of meat and transforms it into carbs and gaining the nutrients from what it ate. Everything is black and white, but multifaceted. Look at the topic being discussed to see if the information is for you. My diet is actually most like Dr. Bergs diet and that's not this video or his videos on zero carb carnivore. This video, however, does reach the diet needs of most overweight people, set down the sugary soda and have berries and a salad and not an apple and pasta if you want to lose a few pounds.
It’s not good for mma , jiu Jitsu etc
Definitely need some carbs .

Serious weight lifter here; this advice is ok depending on your goal. I've tried a lot of diet variations. I have determined through self experimentation and research that to keep me at a peak performance level, I have to consume carbs, daily. Otherwise my explosive stregnth just isn't there. I just want to put that caveat out there.
I completely disagree. Im a serious lifter as well. I have tried IF+Keto Diet for the past 6 weeks. Lost 10 lbs and gained strenght. I broke records on bench press, squats and Deadlift. No Carbs at all!
You are a serious sugar addict that never truly adapted to keto then.
if you get adapted well thats not gonna be an issue at all.
Everybody is different, i have to eat moderate amount complex carbs to stay strong and have energy, tried Keto but didnt work for me thats all may work for other people.
You are spot on. People that don’t eat carbs and are on keto get more sustained energy but don’t get that explosive energy
I'm 33+ weeks pregnant with GD. other moms and the dr.s are yelling at me, i need carbs! and yet i am only getting my carbs from veggies and fruit with a protein for dinner. since i made the diet switch, my sugars have been unbelievably beautiful, i've lost weight which i am technically over weight anyways. and my energy level has sky rocketed, even though i take my afternoon nap. and from what i have learned, reading, researching and watching Berg's videos as a reference, I am surprised more dr.'s dont advise and teach their patients more about the healthy way of treating their diseases. my dr.s would rather i over eat their ideas of daily servings of grains carbs and then inject myself with insulin afterwards. it's insane! i plan on continuing this new diet change post delivery and teach it to my children.

Dr berg I need a video on what you think about quinoa and weight loss because I love it.
Dr Berg knows better than hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution, through which our ancestors evolved through eating carb rich diets, such as bread.
In ancient times, people regularly lived to a healthy old age (80's and 90s), as Solon recalls on his visit to Ethiopia.
What is bad is the way modern diets are constructed around processed foods, including carbs.

I would just like to personally thank you Dr. Berg. I started the keto diet about a week ago and I have already lost close to 5kgs (10pounds?) and I know that a lot of that is water weight, but it´s not the weight that I´m most happy about. I stopped being hungry during midday after lunch and could concentrate on my work much easier. I also got rid of my 3 worst enemies constipation, bloating and acid reflux. This is amazing, I haven´t felt this great since I was a little kid when I wasn´t allowed to have sweets soda and so on and didn´t have all these problems. Yet again, thanks.

Excellent
Not all grains are gluten fueled. There're healthier grains out there that either does NOT have gluten or low in gluten, Red rice, quinoa, chia, etc can be good in moderation or small amounts.
quinoa is highly irritating and inflammatory. Same with Chia
I was 270 and lost 60 pounds with keto but then reached plateau for more than a year I couldn’t lose a single pound. Then I started counting calories while eating carbs like bread every day and lost 25 pounds in three months that I couldn’t lose with keto. Weight loss is not about keto, intermittent fasting or insulin. It’s all about calories in and calories out. That’s the reason I lost so much weight in the first place with keto because I was eating less than what I was eating before
Nice, I understand perfectly what you are saying. I heard one doctor said you got it wrong when it comes to the butter thing.
How about sprouted beans.? Cause i sprout my beans and it doesn’t give me gas.

Vive Malasia you mean glucose, carbs themselves is not essential at all, protein has essential amino acids, fat has essential fatty acids, carbs got none, is carbs a good way to get vitamins, minerals, and fiber-yes, are all carbs good-NO
Your videos are amazing
Why are Quinoa, millet and buckwheat never mentioned? Carbs without gluten and pretty high in proteins. And lentils or chickpeas? They´re filling and a good source of Protein and Iron, too.
Hi Dr.Berg, what do you think about ancient grains (gluten-free like buckwheat, oats, amaranth, quinoa, lentils) and also you can soak & sprout them, so they should be quite healthy then, huh ?
Grains are grains. He teaches not to eat any of them.
"Ancient Grains" more like marketing gimic. This is why Dr berg thrives, people are so easily duped.
Soaking them is better than not soaking them but they are still full of anti nutrients that are harmful for you. Eat the way your distant ancestors did, before the agrarian revolution. Meat ftw.
My body reacts very strangely to carbs. If I eat a meal that has as little as 20 gm of carbs, a couple hours later I'll be shaking like a leaf, sweating, and my feet get really hot. When it happens, I'll check my blood sugar and it's always in the 70's (and yes, I do keep my monitor calibrated). My doctor says that type of reaction is more typical of a blood glucose level in the 40's or 50's.
I've had an abdominal ultrasound and a CT scan and nothing remarkable showed up. I've had this syndrome (for lack of a better term) for well over 20 years, so if it were a tumor or something I'd most likely be dead by now. As long as I stay away from the so-called "fast carbs" I'm fine, so that's what I do.
John hi,
If you are eating grains or starches. You might be reacting to the Glyphosate toxic that is sprayed on grains and starches. 😊
Detoxing thats why
Thanks, doctor
Watching this in Jan 2021. Don't give up and follow Dr. Berg all the way!
The idea that carbohydrates are essential erupted back in the day when food was not easily available and there was a lot of starvation and shortage. So a little bread would give a lot of energy. That, however, is not the case now so carbs should be minimum. The reason you need a little carb is when it associated with roughage and it is needed to not end up having constipation but calories is definitely not why carbs should be consumed.
I was on a low carb diet for about 2 years (less than 50g a day), consuming mainly organic protein/fat rich foods and no grains.
Although it seemed to resolve many of my digestive issues (bloating, food sensitivity, sibo/candida), I looked malnourished, lost too much weight (40lbs+), was constantly exhausted and overall felt pretty crappy tbh.
Balance is the key in my experience. And limiting grains is a good thing. Processed food is your biggest enemy. Quit S.A.D (standard American diet)...your body will thank you in your later years.
Thank you!
Good video...
this is my experience. I feel better when I eat more carbohydrate.
Its not unusual to feel great eating carbs. They digest fast and certain carbs spike insulin more

For example I eat 80-100 Fats/40-70 NET Carbs/140-170 Proteins most of the week and every morning i drop weight. I'm assuming carbs retain water? People can't give up carbs...what an excuse! That's why everyone is fat, because they think potatoes is so essential to their life. I'm fine without carbs and feeling great.
No, you won't. There were never any long term studies done that showed negative results. All the studies have shown very positive results and people ended up living longer and healthier than people that ate carbs regularly. Unless of course the study was funded by the agricultural industry or similar industry to show how much better grains and pastas are for you which of course means it is a biased study from the beginning. It also showed a greater quality of life and more energetic body. Not sure where you get your information from, but you should know that it is not true. In fact, you are just like every other negative Nancy in saying that Keto is bad but offer absolutely not a bit of evidence to prove your point. That is because there is no proof unless it is made up. And go ahead and try to throw some facts out about keto that you find on some Vegan website. Those "facts" will just be cherry picked information that does not contain full detail of what is actually going on to create such data. It will basically be like CNN or MSNBC when they give the news. Stop trying to scare people from being healthy when people that want to be healthy deserve to know the actual truth about how good Ketosis is for the body.
Nonna D So are we just not meant to eat fruits and grains physiologically? I really wanna know and i mean no offence. In India grains form a staple in our diet and also fruits( also most of them are obese) .

Questions this left me with:
* Where would nuts, seeds, herbs, seaweed, fish, meat, eggs, dairy fit in here? Are they not listed cause they're too low-carb or no-carb?
* If this video recommend for weight loss to eat tons of veggies but go light on the beans, fruit, grains, starches (such as rice, beans, potatoes, tofu)...where is it suggesting a person get their calories from to have enough calories? Meat and nuts?
* Why were the only examples of simple carbs sugar, honey, agave? Wouldn't other examples be white/refined rice, grains, and flour? Also where does maple syrup fit in?
* Some fruits are high-fat and higher-calorie though, right, like avocado and I'm forgetting any others
* What group do fermented foods fit in?
* I guess one unhealthy, so-called "food" group is chemicals and dyes
Do we really need Carbs?..., Yes, but the "RIGHT" carbs, the natural carbs
No, you're wrong. Dead wrong. It's ok to eat SOME carbs but we don't NEED to eat them at all. Our body can really only handle about 120 grams of carbs per day but there's nothing that says we should eat that many. It's not necessary at all. Period. QED!

I noticed that I am not having regular bowel movement on the Keto diet. My my waist line and thighs are for sure getting smaller but I am concerned about not doing number 2 regularly. Suggestions??? thanks
They say that having a bowl movement 2 or more times a day may be linked to leaky gut. Try a stool softener once in a while.
Something that worked for me is chia seeds......0 NET carbs and they're filled with all kinds of good stuff......I noticed my nails looked and grew better too....and celery......lots of celery.....very fiberous.......and for some reason tastes sweet to me now......weird......but it definately helps
I've had the same issue since doing Paleo/ Keto and intermittent fasting. The reasoning is because I'm now only eating foods that are nutrient-dense and that my body is actually, almost entirely using. So ultimately there is not much waste product in my system...aka going number 2 every 2, maybe even 3 days now...instead of my usual once per day without the intermittent fasting and my 'normal' diet including all foods beforehand.
Granted, I follow time-restricted eating, but I basically have 1 BM a day, more or less like clockwork. Rarely anything additional until the next day.

You are welcome.
We don't need dietary carbohydrates though, our livers can manufacture what little glucose our brain needs, the rest can run on ketones alone. We don't eat veggies on keto for the carbs, we eat them for the trace nutrients, and also because it helps maintain Ph balance.
Interesting... I've read some studies that suggest, we do not need Carbs at all... They are seen as Non-essential to life. In other words "Optional" We need Fats and Protein but not carbs, in order to survive. Considering that there are sugars in everything we eat, including meat, eating more is superfluous... Cattle, sheep, rabbits poultry and even seafood ... All of the meats get their nourishment from vegetation and that vegetation contains the sugars that are transformed into the animal's tissues, which we eat... Although in most cases, there is very little sugar in meat, it all of the carbs we need... Since I cut out the carbs as you described... Grains, sugars and even pasta, my diabetes went away...
Case in point... The Inuit and coastal Indians never had grains, in their diets until the white man came along. Zero carbs as wee know it... They have lived for thousands of years on Fat and protein alone and some berries (seasonal). We could learn from them... Great video :-) I always enjoy your views :-)
Makes sense - we simply do not have the mechanism to digest grains in their natural state. It's only because most grains these days are fortified with nutrients that people can live off of them.
DStray Cat Inuit are very unhealthy people. They live in an extreme environment and therefore eat an extreme high meat and fat diet. All those omega 3's they eat keep them from truly falling apart.
I'll put $10 bucks on it, that you have never even met an Inuit... I lived with them for a few years...
Something that you know absolutely nothing about... The Canadian North is not always covered in snow and ice... During the summer months, the Sun never sets, but makes a big circle in the sky. The day I arrived up there, it hit 110F... The Inuit eat a lot of Edible plants as do the Coastal and Plains Natives. Ever heard of Pemmican? Natives all over North America have been eating all kinds of foods that you've obviously, never heard of and it has kept them alive and Very healthy for thousands of years...
Just so happens that when the White guys came to America, they nearly starved to death, but for the help they received from the natives... Scurvy was rampant and the natives taught them to make a soup from Pine Sap, which saved them... I could go on for hours...
Bottom-line, I suggest you do a little research on the topic, you're about to spout off about. You sound very "Uninformed".
The Chinese and other Asians have been cultivating Rice for thousands of years... I think you are generally speaking about Modern grains... Ancient grains are a whole different issue... Our modern, bastardized grains are very unhealthy although some are still good... The modern grains, which Flour is made from, are stripped of their nutrients and then fortified with synthetic nutrients that are added back in. That's the short version... lol
Plenty of people live on a mainly grain (read starch) based diet, and do just fine. Why do we go to such efforts to cultivate grains if they are so detrimental to us, because they are beneficial starches and do the body good. Rice, beans, potato, sweet potato, wheat, and oats all day baby. I'm healthy as an Ox.
You dont need food at all tbh.
What air and sunshine alone
Lmao
All we need is love 😂
Artificially send vitamins, minerals and atp in to our body
This is actually true. I have been off food for over a year and feel fantastic.
