- Johnny Cash joins Roy Orbison on the song "Oh, Pretty Woman" for Johnny's TV show! The two met in 1955 on Roy's radio show. Both were on Sun Records in Memphis and in the band the "Class of '55" with Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Johnny Cash seemed like such a good guy.. no ego here. He let Roy do his thing and just tried to fit in. Great moment
well it's roy's song! but Johnny seems to be in a facetious mood here which is fun
Ccc
Two great men we will never see their like again.
@@bbsoni4814 I don't think you know what facetious means
@@neilgardiner5101 playful?
Roy & Johnny fun fact:
These two fantastic guys were actually neighbors for 20 years in Tennessee
I wish it was the 70s
Again they were both so great
Best friends too!
"Come on over, Roy, let's play one of your songs together." 😁😀
Orbisons house burnt down. killing some of his children shortly after his wife died. Cash bought the plot and turned it into an orchard.
must have some great neighborhood barbecues😂
RIP Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash.
Two titans of American music.
RIP Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley as well.

Great tow father!!!
if only Johnny had learned half the song :D
SlashMan.EXE they sing great together funny I like Roy voice the best cool
I've seen you commenting in some Misfits videos. You know these two had songs written by Glenn Danzig and that's amazing
No smoke and mirrors, just two great musicians having a good time playing music together. I love it!
This is so wholesome. Roy changing keys for Johnny, Johnny apologizing for messing up the bridge. Theres just so much love and respect in this clip. I liked Cash's music, but my mom just loves Orbison. He seemed like a really nice guy, and what a voice.
I love how Johnny leaves space for Roy generally, he knows who he's accompanying. And the key change by Roy is so thoughtful
Also shows a true mastery of his craft to just change the key and keep it rolling.he was the real deal.
I'm glad you noticed that Orbison is singing in a lower key to accommodate Cash
Orbison must have had the best male voice ever recorded. Love seeing Johnny Cash totally enjoying Roy's voice, almost in awe, but definitely holding his own, even when he loses track for a second.
Roy Orbison had the best voice and elvis had the velvet voice but not as good as roy
Elvis claimed Roy was the only male singer that could out sing him.
Not to take away from your comment or from Roy Orbison, however, you have to consider
Frankie Valli in the running as the best male voice ever recorded.
They complement each other perfectly
@@flukedoos Sorry, Frankie sang falsetto. Not even close.
Orbison had a vocal range that no one in popular music could match at that time and probably even today. That jovial performance made that fact abundantly clear. Roy knew it. Johnny knew it and now, the whole world knows it. But, man did they have fun!
You can see how happy Johnny was to be there with Roy
Two friends sharing a song, with John deferring to Roy's vocal prowess.
Most who join the stage with John are covered in his shadow, he was always humble, but never the less it was hard to match the Man in Black. Ray does so effortlessly and John is so respectful and honored to sing with him. This is so wonderful to watch.
I love Cash. That being said, there is not a person who Roy was in the shadow of. In fact, he was really holding back and toning it down in this clip. Elvis and Tom Petty both said he was the best singer they ever heard.
So much better than 99% of the crap being pumped out today
Music since 2010 has nosedived.
Seriously
Why don’t you go out and make some better music then?
Agreed
You’re so true mark, you should only listen to this type of music because it’s good and it’s in your comfort zone so it doesn’t require you to expand your taste.
It’s like the nerd geek and the badboy
Yet they are both my heroes and I’m only 39. There’s something very tragic about the whole thing. I’m laughing and crying at the same time. Love you both man. So much
You have great taste sir
Same thoughts and 40 now..
@@prr8755
In fact I’m gonna watch this again right now.
This may offend most people but for me Roy is way above Elvis to me who was majorly overrated. The only thing he sang that blew me away was “If I Can Dream”. Had Elvis done albums full of songs at that level I would have loved him.
Same and I'm 14
@@VinylSamuraisMusic - I love all of them. Idk what it is about Elvis, but I genuinely like him just a _tad_ better than Roy & Johnny. Roy & Johnny wrote many of their songs, unlike Elvis, but Elvis just has such a powerful, earth-shattering voice; that's what puts him above the other two, imo. But all three were great talents in their own ways & I love them all.
Singing legends like this are not being made anymore.
That's for sure. I've worked in or owned recording studios for over 30 years and I've witnessed the decline of true musical talent over that time. It's become a time of computer-generated music(?), with groups fronted by people who can't sing. Country music was one of the few holdouts, but now we are beginning to see Country-rap with the younger generation, so I'm afraid it's only a matter of time. Truly sad.
Amen.
@philipthon3349 😂
Johnny is over the moon singing with Roy! I would be too, natch!😄
Priceless. Doesn't matter if their ranges didn't match, Johnny forgot the lines of the song and the guitar issues. Just great to see these legends together! It's not as though they were recording an LP-just enjoying singing together! GGGRRROOOWWW.
"PRETTY WOMAN" = GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME & NOBODY HAS EVER DUPLICATED ROY ORBISON!! Every female I know loves this song!!!!
End of the line was awsome also : )
Yeah, you never see any Roy Orbison imitators do ya?
How's about chris issak?
Grrrrrrrroooowwww! Hahahaa nice Roy.
Nobody could growl like him. Poor pitiful Diamond Davey sounded like a two year old trying to gargle.
@@reepacheirpfirewalker8629 it’s a R rolled I can match Mr.Roys almost exact
He did the same thing on the Traveling Wilberries album. I loved it!!
Johnny had great charisma; so humble yet so strong. And Roy, always the gentleman, was guaranteed to be the best singer in the room. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for posting!
Two of the greatest.
Hi Kathy
Back when musicians had actual talent and respect for each other
Mama loved Roy and daddy loved Johnny! I hope they are all together!
Smile 😊
They will be...
Holy cow. What I wouldn’t have given to have seen them both live, especially here. God they would’ve been amazing together…I was too young to see Cash live (I was 4 years old when he died), and I wasn’t even born yet when Roy died. RIP to them both.
❤❤ seeing Johnny Cash all smiles knowing that Roy's voice is so beautiful 💓 two standup men
only if todays stars were as humble as these two are
Sometimes when crazy old people say, "it was better back when I was young..." they're correct. This is indisputable, irrefutable, undeniable evidence!
Especially when you had music like this around. Not the BS people are putting out now all this Rap and Pop music makes me want to invent a time machine go back the the late 1960s and live the rest of my life out there. Enjoying the real music.
Oh how I miss this music playing more on radios etc..
Now every moron thinks they can be the next Tupac, Or Beiber. Its BS phoney shit. And most of the shit so called musicians (you know the ones that actually play real instruments not this computer generated garbage) most of these modern tossers dont write thier own songs and probably couldnt read sheet music if their life depended on it.
As a musician myself. Its people like this that gave me the energies to play and do what i do. Thanks guys.

I reckon so.
So True!
I don't disagree with you. But they also often say, drugs were not a thing back then.
I don't think they ment watching roy and johhny was what they was meaning
Cash is in awe. This is gold.
Wow. Roy was the king! Johnny shows his admiration by apologizing at for messing up the bridge.
Johnny was the King.
Roy the Prince.
@@vanessak.1100 He really wasn't. Vocal wise, this video just shows how once in a life time Roy was. Johnny couldn't shine his shoes and he knows it, just watch the video. Both legends in the exact sense of the word, both my idols and both different. Roy was one of a kind though.
@@marianng3950 both kings but johny couldnt shine his shoes, what sense does that make yea they are both kings but unique voices too johny had the best baritone voice out there, the best and most influential country singer while roy had an amazing voice too but he was more of an early rock singer
@@-injustice-6738 I understand what you're saying but I'll put in a sports context, using boxing. There are hall of fame fighters and then there's the few all time greats. The hall of fame fighters are great in their own right but the all timers are the level above. That's how I view Roy and Johnny. It's no slight to Johnny that Roy was a once in a generation voice. Both greats, just one is on his own level
Two absolute legends. They will never be forgotten. And forever they will be revered!
johhny just loves this man haha never seen 'm laugh like this
bob dylan said so himself too, he had the best voice of that period
roy was indeed one of the best voices out there
Roy had a really unique voice. There's something about it, I just want to smile whenever I hear it. Can't put my finger on it. Such a charisma.
Elvis said something to the effect of Roy was the only singer that he couldn't or wouldn't follow on stage. That's respect.
When he inducted Roy into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fane, Bruce Springsteen said that when he recorded Born to Run he wanted to make a album that sounded like Phil Spector, had lyrics like Bob Dylan and sung like Roy Orbison. He soon realized that NOBODY can sing like Roy Orbison
Harry. B. Renner. jr, thank you! He was a very humble and shy man too. I read he also practiced good manners and was really courteous. That added to his appeal too.
@@timcornelius1912
Elvis was being humble.
In reality, elvis's chameleon voice destroys Roy or anyone else.
Excellent song, there is no doubt that Roy Orbison was, is and will continue to be a genius, a great singer and an excellent guitarist
Two Absolute LEGENDS
This is gold...made me smile seeing these two legends just doing their stuff
I cannot believe that I have never seen these two people, singing , performing together- a thrill of my lifetime to see Mr. Orbison in Phoenix 1988.
Wow... two of the worlds greatest musical legends duetting together, so awesome.
SUPER Roy Orbison & Johnny Cash
Две легенды Рой Орбисон и Джонни Кэш. Браво.
Two very different but wonderful voices. What a pair of legends.
Smiling the whole time while watching this. What a wonderful moment in history!
ear to ear haha cant believe i havnt seen this until now
This is the bomb Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash singing together two of the best singers and guitar players ever were. I am in Rock and Roll Heaven
Brilliant thanks for posting 😊 👍👏👏👏👏🏴🥃
Love this performance. It shows two amazing artists at the height of their careers singing a great song. And it's not the 'wrong key', it's just a different one. How can it be that wrong if it's Roy's song with him singing it. Anyway, I don't really consider this a full performance, I like to think of it of an 'unplugged' session between two of the greatest singers the world has ever known, just enjoying performing and each other's company!
In my opinion Johnny was the greatest singer and entertainer ever.
He's definitely up there!
it IS the wrong key, because Roy reverts to the original key half way through on middle 8, it's strange how they fake this
Johnny CashFan AGREE!!!!!!
Paddy Campbell. You're absolutley right. In my humble opinion.
Elvis Presley used to say Roy Orbison was the hardest act to follow because his voice was so good
This is Great!!
THEY ARE BOTH GREAT IN THEIR OWN WAY!
BUT ROY NAILS THIS SONG EVERYTIME!!!!
JOHNNY APPRECIATES THAT, VERY CLASSY!!!!
Two good friends having a good time here. They lived next door to each other.
My heroes together!!! I miss you so much in these days, guys!!
R.I.P Roy Orbison 1936-1988
R.I.P Johnny Cash 1932-2003

This was such a treat. Granted, Johnny had trouble remembering the verses, but that only added into the fun. I laughed the whole way through because of how well these two get along. This truly shows the deep friendship these two great musicians had.
Yes, and also I shoud note that I'd never seen Cash showing such reverence for anyone before. I guess any singer would feel the same in Orbison's presence :-)
I noticed it too! I've seen docus of other singers/guitarists talking about Roy and they all had this reverence in their voice when they talked about him.
And this was filmed around a year after the fire. From what I've read, Johnny was a great help during that period in Roy's life. He bought the land the house used to be on and planted an orchard there. I think John Carter Cash married Roy Jr. and his wife, too.
@@enopfa catch Johnny with Roy Clark and his antics, no shortage of respect there either, for another great Roy.
so much class together, still cracks me up that Johnny didnt want to sing te high notes, his voice was so deep he could have just arrenged those parts to him, but still pure gold from the great Roy and this improvised duo.
Two of the greatest legends of American music who influenced multiple generations of the world then and still now. Thanks for the post!
2 brilliant musicians gone forever!!
This is a lot to take when you see such greatness .
I'm glad they stayed friends over the years...
Lovely to see the big O performing with a fan
I felt a true happiness watching to this video.
So awesome that you can tell Johnny is really in awe of Roy as even Elvis was.
Elvis was being humble.
In reality, elvis's voice was multi faceted. He destroyed Roy
@@bradhuskers Elvis certainly did not destroy Roy in any musical way. Roy had a much higher range and wrote many of his own songs.
In fact, there is a famous story in which he was offered an Orbison style song and admitted that Roy could cover the notes better.
Not to say that one is better than the other, as that is plain foolish in any form of art, but very few had Orbison's range... period.
I think the song in question may have been "In Dreams." Listen to that song... I mean, really... listen to that song.
Although, I certainly will give Presley a nod for the end of Maria's Her Name!"
@@robertpierson8206
Stop embarrassing yourself.
In 1960, Roy was on his way to record "only the lonely", but stopped to offer the song to elvis, because at this time in elvis's career, his power and range were equal with Roy's.
Elvis's "it's now or never" "surrender" etc...showcased his strong vocals in the early 60's. Roy knew this and thought that his song would be perfect for elvis. But it wasn't meant to be due to scheduling conflicts.
Point being? Is that your low IQ caused you to display your stupidity in here.
Elvis presley actually arranged several of his critically acclaimed gospel recording studio sessions.
That alone speaks volumes about elvis's artistry.
Here's another fact lost on a low IQ weak minded sheep like you.
Roy lived decades longer than elvis, yet failed to equal the tremendous amount of critically acclaimed recordings as elvis.
In a very very short career, elvis's critically acclaimed body of work in the recording studio, DWARFED Roy's. Despite Roy living longer. Elvis's body of work was in more genres of music as well.
Elvis was light years more diverse than Roy.
Just the sheer soul depth and diversity of elvis destroys Roy.
At the end of the day, roy lived longer and still failed to match the sheer magnitude of critically acclaimed recordings. That speaks volumes.
Ella Fitzgerald is another example of an artist far greater than Roy was.
Ella Fitzgerald didn't write lyrics. Yet like a true iconic artist, she created masterpieces in the recording studio.
Your low IQ prevents you from getting that reality.
You are one poorly educated sheep.
@@robertpierson8206
I laughed at your first low IQ comment.
Quote,
Elvis certainly did not destroy Roy in any musical way"
End quote.
LMFAO
LMFAO
I laughed hard. Then felt sorry for your parents and kids.
Two iconic artists come to mind.
Ella Fitzgerald
Elvis presley.
Neither wrote lyrics.
Yet BOTH destroyed Roy when it. Came to their critically acclaimed bodies of work in the recording studio.
The sheer magnitude of their recordings, DWARFS Roy's
Ella Fitzgerald's interpretations of the great American songbooks, are critically acclaimed masterpieces. The writers of those songs could NEVER equal the level of artistry that Ella brought to life in the recording studio.
Not even close.
Jerry lieber and mike stoller, two Jewish boys from NY, NEVER could've brought the artistry to the lyrics they put down.
Had Roy's schedule lined up with elvis's in 1960, Roy would've handed elvis another blockbuster hit.
In 1960, elvis's vocals were as strong as anyone's in the music industry at that time.
And "only the lonely" would've been knocked out of the park!
But it wasn't meant to be.
However, your notion that elvis couldn't handle Roy's songs? IS STUPIDITY on your part, at a level seldom seen.
You are very poorly educated.

Don't think there is music like this today
Amazing!!!!
MyDaMnWoRd is that a tear running down my face?
I love Cash.....but it's clear Roy has an unbelievably fantastic voice. Cash is like Dylan....excellent writing material but not such spectacular voices. But it can be overlooked because the songs they wrote and their ability to combine that with playing good instrumentals was legendary. Not saying they couldn't sing at all, but compared to others...there's just no comparison. Orbison could do all 3 and that's just fantastic.
Point taken. Let's be clear, Cash was 100 times the singer Dylan was. Roy was just 1000 times better. Dylan sounds like a dying piece of roadkill.
My favorite part of this whole performance is at 2:24 where Roy stops playing at the place there should be a drum break and the band keeps going. It's funny when he hits the chord again a second later hoping the band will stop. Great to see two legends having fun together. RIP Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash.
+mattiboo haha,,, Johnny messed him up
I would have to disagree.
sadly they are BOTH faking this, Roy starts playing in Blat, riff in F... (it's in A, riff in E) then reverts to proper key later in song on middle 8, total fake, probably so JC can sing along... VERY odd
Love your vids
