First and Only is a military science fiction novel by Dan Abnett, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Published in 1999, it is the first novel in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, which, as of 2019, consists of 16 novels and multiple short stories, as well as two spin-off novels (Titanicus and Double Eagle) and a companion book that acts as a mock history of the military campaign which forms the setting of the series. - Zábava
So on the topic of Heldane's face, DK is right, he is legit horse-faced. He's a character from the Eisenhorn novels, who had his face fucking destroyed, and had reconstructive surgery, but in order to be more inscrutable and intimidating to his enemies he requested that they reconstruct his face in this disfigured horse like shape. So DK is right, he's a furry
I feel like DK has a much better grip on the details of the book, like when they were talking about the demaon possession of the soldier who had the shard of the chaos effigy lodged in his neck
Either that or he's just a big fan of General Sulla.
There's a picture of him on Lexicanum from inferno magazine, he is the angry version of Bojack
To look intimidating as fuck or to live the rest of his life as his fursona?
That is the question
@@the_mad_fool I can hear Amberley Vail laughing in the background
Another point: regarding Space Marines. Within 40k stories there has always been a two streams of thought regarding Marines capacity. One based upon the table top game where the Space Marines are bluntly killable and really just super elite troops. (this is the universe that Gaunt's Ghosts is set in) And one more 'cinematic' in nature where where the Marines are only killable by plot points, are demigods, and a single squad of Marines can take over an entire industrialized planet.
+
Well also I don’t think that Bricky and DK understand that Iron warriors are chaos undivided and realistically aren’t that powerful in terms of chaos space marines, they essentially have thick armor and big guns but are very easily taken down by enough armaments flying at em
@@loganparry2676 Yeah, but they weren’t hit with a tank shell or a rocket launcher, the were beat with Small Arms Fire.
@@loganparry2676 It is debatable that the iron warriors are even really chaos. They are pretty much baseline space marines and abhor mutation. In other words your point is actually stronger.
Not to mention it’s a well known fact that the joints of their armor even in their own stories is a weak point. Cranking up your lasgun to max power and hammering the joints could punch through.
If Ciaphas Cain is Blackadder Goes Forth: In Space™ then Gaunt's Ghosts is Sharpe: In Space™ and I would _absolutely_ have Sean Bean reprising that role if I had my way.
Make it either audiobook series or animated series!
Rory McCann as Rawne, Liam Cunningham as Corbec, Iwan Rheon as Lijah Cuu and Maise Williams as Tona Criid.
100%. That's the way I explained it to a friend who had read/watched Sharpe but hadn't experienced Gaunt's Ghosts
I literally just made a comment about that when I saw your comment hahahha
Same
I love Sharpe's Rifles I never made this connection I now going to get this set of models
So the thing about Space Marines is that the myth of their invincibility is perpetuated by their penchant for shock assaults and overwhelming firepower, because while they can take way more hits than a normal human, their helmets and the joints of their armor offer relatively little protection. So concentrated fire from a squad of Guardsmen is perfectly capable of taking one down, especially if the Guardsmen are prepared with hotshot packs and overcharged lasguns that can be quite handily used for long-distance welding jobs in peacetime. But the Space Marine is shooting back with a bolter, charging forward with several hundred pounds of reinforced muscle and bone encased in power armor at speeds comparable to a car, and he's probably made damn sure to have already closed the distance as much as possible before he was ever sighted. And the poor bastards shooting at him are usually cannon fodder, not trained sharpshooter elites.
There is a reason that the Iron Warriors, Death Guard, and World Eaters would take horrendous casualties, and were often outperformed by the White Scars, Raven Guard, Night Lords, and Alpha Legion in overall effectiveness despite the obvious difference in the scale of deployment.
Yes
@@akumaking1 I hope so it’s a very good insight on the scale of space marine perspective
That is a good point - sure Astartes are ludicrously tough and well armoured, but they aren't just a blunt instrument. They also understand the craft of war, and specialise in orbital strikes, rapid shock assault and exploiting the psychological window offered by surprise and 'shock and awe' tactics. Once they get in close, human adversaries are just horribly outclassed. Human foes only really have a chance to win if they can bring down the Space Marines before they get into up close mangling range, but the Astartes don't just stand still and wait to be shot at - they move fast, shoot back with deadly accuracy and horribly powerful weapons, and generally make shooting them down a difficult prospect. An odd round or even burst of fire that hits is very unlikely to do anything of note to them, and maintaining focussed fire on a ton plus of armoured killing machine bearing down on you at better than fifty miles an hour over even broken terrain is easier said than done.
Gunning Space Marines down with sustained, focussed fire from Guard grade weapons is entirely possible in theory, in a nice safe controlled environment weapons test, but in the madness and fury of battle it is not so easy a proposition.
I suppose they are comparable to modern special forces then. A Navy SEAL is just a man and he can be killed but his training, gear, support, tactics and nearly super-human level of fitness makes him terribly formidable. Especially when they are prepared and on the offensive. At the end of the day though, they can die just like everyone else. Interesting way to look at it!
Yup, It's the shock, awe and fear that makes you hesitate or just flee cuz 'chaos space marine'.
Mad Larkin and the Angel is one of the most wholesome in Ghostmaker
Dorden heals you, he heals you good
'The Warp knows you, Ibram.'
Sent shivers down my spine man.
There were so many moments in that book that sent me shivers down my spine. And no other book series made me laugh that hard. Or cry, on some parts in the future books (you'll know when you get to it)
@Les bons amis
Ciaphas Cain is beautifully written by a guy who has literally never read a single piece of 40k media, at all, ever.
@@ZenGheist Yeah, same, and yeah, you'll know when you get to it, and man I do love all the Characters and OMG DO I HATE ONE SOOOOOOO MUCH. I think he's introduced in book 4 or at the end of book 3. I WISHED DEATH UPON you know who I'm talking about. "YOUR DEAD TANITH"
Anyone here read The First Law series? I may jump into 40k with this and the first law series is my favorite for dark, amazing characters with incredible dialog. Need something to scratch that itch.
How does Gaunts Ghosts stack up to it?
I think it's also important to keep in mind. That the First and Only isn't really a novel as much as a collection of linked short stories. It really is meant to be used as a primer for the entire series. It is also important to note that Dan Abbnet as a writer for in 40K never lets the lore, stand between him and a good story.
well, more he wasn't well versed in the lore for the two novels.
That's what I noticed as well, especially in Ghostmaker which is more or less a bunch of short stories. Necropolis is where the real action begins and where you'll get attached to each characters.
@@Inucroft Take a look at his Eisenhorn novels as well. Compared to the actual Lore at the time (and moving forward) Space travel and faster than light communications are both far to reliable in the first trilogy than they should be.
a good writer uses the setting to enhance the characters and story he wants to tell
a better writer makes his own setting and follows it strictly
a bad writer breaks the world to save his characters
@@SandyEA I don't know if I agree. In the books gmtravel and communication is kften summed up as "it took me three months to reach..." and the helican sector is a hugely settled, industrialised, and known sector. In the times of Eisenhorns deploymemt there, we know lf no larger war disturbances, and the warp routes are known and scoutet often.
Now you gotta do Commissar Ciaphas Cain, the Hero of the Imperium, Tallarn Prophet of The Emperor, and just all around Chad tier shit bag.

The 3rd gaunts ghosts book is where it rly hits its stride
Also Haldane genuinely has a horse face, after getting it mauled in the first eisonhorn book, he got it reconstructed to look like a human horse hybrid to spook people
I hope you're not kidding.
Was basically going to make this exact comment. Should defiently read on to book 3 at least the first three work really well together and yep in other books Haldane appears, first as a young up and coming inquisitor with whos dead straight edge
So many great characters. Some truthly ridiculous, like Master Scout M’koll - guy who single handedly killed chaos dread and beat dark eldar Mandrake in his own game.
Dude the 3rd book is amazing i wish they would read up to there
@@danielmunoz2457 Well, things really pick up from Necropolis and only get better.

@@legionaireb I think he's refering to the tabletop models, no to the novels
@@evillaughinthebackground5732 Ah, good point.
Scout Sgt Mkoll is the guy Sly Marbo looks up to. The next couple of books really show just how much of a badass he is in terms of his stealth ability, and his tactical sense.
Bricky in denial that his terms are more boomer than Dk's
Black Crusade quote "The Legionnaire that scoffs at a lasgun has not charged across an open field against a hundred of them.”
Average BC Chaos Space Marine, 8 Toughness Bonus, 8 Armor 10 on Body, 15-ish Wounds.
BC Lasgun stats, Dmg 1d10+3 Pen 0 1-3 shots 60 ammo, Overcharge Dmg +1 2x ammo, Overload Dmg +1 Pen +2 4x ammo.
BC Horde Rules, +1d10 Dmg up to +2d10 per 10 Magnitude above 10, 1 attack per 10 Magnitude.
30 Magnitude Lasgun Horde, 3 attacks of 3d10+4 Pen 2 which can be fired on Burst for a possible 9 hits vs 16-18 Soak.
Average 6.5-8.5 damage a hit, typically 9+ Lethal Critical Wounds, dead in 4 hits.
Now envision that 30 Magnitude Horde is maybe just 15 Guardsmen, as the typical Human has 3TB 4A 10W and dies on a 9+ Crit, so not likely that you 1 shot anyone even with a bolter. Legion Bolters are 1d10+9 Pen 4 by the way.
So yeah, Family can be pretty powerful. lol
Bricky, you forgot the ap and damage on the hellgun
Don't forget Larkin has a hot-shot lasgun and can aim for the joints in the armour.
I LOVED the scene where the Vytrians (I hope I spelled that right) came up behind the Janteen, and just demolished them.
To say that it was simply satisfying is an understatement.
This is a favorite scene, but the one just before? Where Blaine defends against the Jantine assault? That gets my allergies going every time (slight tear duct irritation, clearing of throat and a weird lump in my throat... ) :-)
I love that it also says that the vitrians become such a celebrated regiment years later I’m like “fuck yeah, they fuckin made it”
Shy's sass has escaped the image boarder

Amberley Veil is a good inquisitor. And gets to do a Samus Aran impression in one book.
Thats because we don't know enough about her yet. There arent any "good" inquisitors
Thats exactly how I imagine her. Samus Aran with a feminine charm and sense of humor. But the buff samus, not the zero suit style
@@alejandrorivas4585 Why not both?
@@mapleflag6518 Because buff women are hot.
@@krullachief669 Why not have her be buff and wear a zero suit?
Now I got to wonder how they'll react to Ciaphas Cain if they do that for book club. It's very similar in that it's guard focused and has a Commisar who doesn't employ Human Wave tactics. But it's much more light hearted, and also about a guy with a massive case of Imposter Syndrome.
Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium!!!
I love the Cain books.
Ciaphas Cain, the man who is the embodiment of "Stupid Dumb Luck". The man that cannot die. Even after he OFFICIAL death. The Imperium still writes him down as Active in the service of the Emperor. After a dozen times of writing him down KIA. He shows up a live!
@@knightlyscholar2745 HERO OF THE IMPERIUM
@@Qardo swear we're gonna have some point in the later era books, like mid-indomitus crusade, of a new Risen Saint of the Imperium, and its just Ciaphas fuckin Cain.
Standard guardsman training for fighting traitor Astartes: focus fire on the neck. It’s not a big target, but the armour is weakest there and he doesn’t have two of those.
I hope they do Our Martyred Lady at some point in the future
Doge Vandired 2.0
Just for the simple fact that you get the most one sided stand off between the Ecclesiarh and a fucking Custodes
@@couchpotato5592 where's the lie though 😂😂😂
Everytime Dravir spoke the image of Denethor eating the fucking grape popped into my mind.
Fun fact, STCs are like super 3D printers that can make almost anything. But due to thousands of years of lost knowledge, the Imperium can only use the STC purely for what they were last used for by mankind last time lol
This book has had an effect on me
Ever since I read it, whenever I commit to something, I say "Ghostmaker"
I can vouch for the ears lowered. That's a grandpa thing.
My family says something along the lines of "got your ears set out". Doesn't make as much sense to me, but 4 generations later and we're still making that same lame joke.
I actually have heard both. also when running stubble look I have gotten "ran out of razors?"
I love Gaunt's Ghosts. They're pretty much just based on the series of Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell, which are about the 95th Rifles (a regiment in the British Army during the Napoleonic War). The Tanith are Irish, Welsh and Scottish, hence the prefixes to their names. Lots of Ws, Ls, Mks and Mcs.
As you explain what Gaunt's Ghosts is about, I realized that its Sharpe. Its the Sharpe's series but in 40K. And I love that.
10:17 shy, “we’re not so different you and I”
I loved listening to this book on audible.
I also remember having two massive OMG moments when the story gets to the Men Of Iron STC. The first moment I simply thought of how big of a find that was, and the second moment was when it was revealed that it made Men Of Iron. As soon as I heard that I was just screaming at the characters to get the hell out of there.
So far the most surprising thing is that Bricky hasn'g heard the "ears lowered" thing before.
I will also be reporting all three of you to the Inquisition for Heresy because you failed to report Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series of books and TV movies as a major inspiration for Gaunt's Ghosts. :P
understandable. have a nice day.

Gaunt's Ghosts really reminds me of the Sharpe series transported to WH40K. I'm going to have to re-read the first one and continue the series.
It's Sharpe's Rifles in 40k more or less
I agree with Shy, it should be Brutal Kunnin. Perfectly explains how the ork mindset works.
"Everybody loved him... whats his name?" The biggest problem with gaunts ghost. Great series tho.
If you liked Gaunt's Ghosts, check out the Sharpe books or tv show with Sean Bean as that is what it was heavily inspired by, except Napoleonic times than 41st Millennium. Both super good series to get around for that wartime underdog regiment operating in or under haughty/inept bureaucrats vibes

Im always gonna reccomend the Ciaphas Cain books, for another amazing commisar who still has morals
What being a coward and getting respect for it? I love Cain to but he is a bitch Chad lol
The only 40k character that has reason to believe the emperor is watching over them, but still doesn’t. Is also badass enough to die of old age, despite fighting every flavor of xeno or heretic. Also, despite the vastness of 40k, probably the only human to go through a Necron teleporter and live to tell the tale… at least to the inquisition if no one else. Then becomes a celebrity amongst the inquisition after Amberly releases his memoirs posthumously into whatever archives all they share, basically for recreational reading.
Look forward to them reading the rest of the books and seeing how much of an absolute lad Shoggy Domor is. Also, for real, you guys should read Brutal Kunin' next. Shit is hilarious.

Looking forward to your book review of Soul Hunter.
When I got the Omnibus. I had to read through the whole thing afterwards when I finished the first story.
I love relistening to the audiobooks when they became audio. Soul Hunter is easily to most listen too story in my collection. And it does such justice to the Night Lords Legion. And the other stories in it. Even more justice to not only the Legion, but their interactions with others.
Ave Dominus Nox.
What I love about the books set in the Sabbatt crusades are the regiments and other units are so fucking dope and unique like you got the vitrian dragoons with their dope ass suits n shit, the phantine being the only guard regiment that use aircraft, the blood pact, etc.

Thank goodness, the title had me thinking this was going to be the only Gaunts Ghosts review coming out. Glad there's gonna be a series.
26:27 how Shy wakes up in the morning knowing she has to deal with these 2
These are great, but I wish you didn't avoid spoilers and just talked about the book. People have an entire month to read the book, and if they're not done in time, they can come back later. Feel like it would allow for a more complete discussion.
Gotta give Commissar Ciaphas Cain: Hero of The Imperium a spotlight.
A commissar who was born with a royal straight flush in hand and a 10 in luck.
A normal mortal who've survived against tyranids, deamons, orks (even won a 1 on 1 fight against an Ork war boss), Chaos Space Marines, Necrons. If there's something in the horror that is the 40K universe, this Commissar has not only survived against them, he won.
Along with his bad ass aid/bodyguard/tanna tea server Jurgen. Biggest badass the Imperium Guard has.
not that you would realize he was ever there if the imperial propagandists could have their way. just read Death or Glory, kind of sad they didn't put Jurgen on the feature movie, man really deserved better.
I listen to these closed at work and only now realize how many of Shys hilarious edits I've been missing out on
2 points on this
1: Bragg is not stupid, he's not an oaf. He sometimes acts like it, but that's only to play the part so other people don't get a sense of how smart he really is. Which he is.
2: I always enjoyed the more human feel of the Astartes in the Gaunt/Cain novels. Whenever their seen the guards really shit their pants, but if you stay smart and keep the fire up they will go down. These are superbly trained warriors with amazing gear, but they can still die. Now Custodes and stuff is different. But I enjoyed that marines were portrayed as terrifying but in the end, killable characters. And remember, this is when there's only like 2-5 of them against dozens of some of the best guards out there.
Served with guys who did this. They act really dumb but they certainly aren’t. Most of them simply take a little longer to process than everyone else
Now I wish you cover the Commissar Cain series
Gaunts Ghosts reminded me a lot of "band of brothers" just in a 40k setting. Loved your review guys.
Oh, don't forget, not just an STC for the Men of Iron, but it was chaos corrupted and churning out chaos men of iron.
Ya know, not just the Men of Iron, aka the killer AI's that tried to kill humanity way back when.
"Jesse wtf are you talking about?"
Haha, so true! xD
My cousin bought me the whole series of Gaunt books for Christmas, first warhammer books I’ve read, and I love how they convey “grimdark” in the wording, so good!
I highly recommend Lukas the Trickster as a future book for the book club. It was my favorite 40k book before the Infinite and the Devine, and I've read it multiple times now. It has some great humor (to offset the dark eldar's brutality) and is really entertaining too, with a cunning and anarchic space marine protagonist who can be such a delightful little shit.
Damn i gotta be with shy on this one, reading brutal kunnin right now and it is a banger of a book. Good way to get multiple perspectives in these massive 40k wars.
The third Gaunts Ghost book Necropolis is probably one of my favorites. Brutal kunnin was amazing, i do recommend it. The warhammer crime novel Bloodlines was one of the best 40k novels that really brought to life the lives of average citizens in a cyberpunk-noir hive city (tiny, but still large and not nearly as grim dark in comparison to like Necromunda for example)
Mine too, and i think this is the first time, in the third book where we stay on one planet and basically focuses on one battle. Which Dan follows primally for the rest of the books. And this allows him to be more descriptive, flesh out characters and everything just improves.
the most grim dark book ive read so far was skitarius. it didnt realise how brutal the machanicum is
I'm german and I listened to the books in German (naturally). The reader has a really awesome voice. There are a couple of differences to the original, english version though. For instance, the Ghosts say "Feck" instead of "Feth" and I can't stop saying that irl.
That's funny, we Irish say feck because it's a slightly neutered version of fuck
Hence why father jack always said FECK OFF in father Ted (no one's going to get that)
I just finished reading this a few days ago and I loved it
this was my first warhammer book. i knew a lot about the lore. but god i loved this book, i then went on to the second and my god is it good. read it in school and god was it a roller coaster. i need to read more and more. larkin is my favorite charater. and i love the scene where hes with the angle, i love that kinda storys, snipers in there post, and larkin makes it so much better with his mad nature. cant wait for more.
I don't think Shy will ever read this, and I don't know if she needs to, but if she does, I need her to know ony one thing:
I love her and all she has done for us.

Funny furry jokes aside, wolfsbane is one of my favourite books and the audio performance is great. Good insight into a lot of 40k bits. Loved this video thanks guys
Brutal Kunnin' and Ciaphas Cain are a must for the Ad Rid Book Club.
Oh, I hope you guys tackle the Forges of Mars trilogy, that one is a good ride.
Want to get into WH40K fiction but don't know where to start?
Then the Eisenhorn Trilogy is the way to go
Xenos (2001, ISBN 1-84154-146-X)
Malleus (2001, ISBN 0-7434-1176-5)
Hereticus (2002, ISBN 1-84154-236-9)
Start with these three and after that it don't matter where you go because the Eisenhorn books covers all the basics and will get you inline.
Just started reading the series recently, the missus got me the four omnibuses as a Christmas present. Currently reading Necropolis and oh boy.... I'm hooked on it. Dan Abnett is a fantastic writer and the characters he's created with Gaunt and the Tanith First are just incredible. It's basically 40k Sharpe and I fuckin love it
My first introduction to Warhammer was Necropolis. What a way to hook me for life.
Sadly in 40k AI is 100% garentee to go full terminator. Because they become a vessel for chaos corruption or Because the most logical way to fight chaos is to kill everything that would feed the warp.
Even if they don't do that. Mechanics will do ANYTHING to squash something producing abominable intelligent machines.
Man I gotta finish the last books, I LOVE EVERY BOOK, and they only get better
Highly recommend Watchers of the Throne. The custodian story of valerian and aleya. Great story line and character development.
First and Only was my first 40k book. 16.5 years ago from today. Still one of the best!
Guants Ghosts and the Ultramarines Omnibus was my first 2 series in 40K followed by Eisenhorn, Ravenor and the Blood Angels Omnibus. Great books and you should have DK read 15 Hours as its a great grimdark look into what most Guardsmen get when newly conscripted to a invasion.
Ave Dominus Nox Bricky, can't wait for next book club NL omnibus is basically my Gaunts Ghost. I love seeing your become a son of the sunless world.
My favourite line was wenn Commissar Harken (dunno how you spell it) was about to shoot the guys who were running from a baneblade and Gaunt told him to stuff it cause its a fucking baneblade
Gaunt’s always looking out for the Little Guys
Gaunt's Ghosts: Necropolis is amazing, you should do that one sometime. The main "protagonist" is a hive city under siege and it is very rare that you see how disfuncional the bureaucracy is in 40k especially when under existential peril.
Honestly, I listened to this before I listened to gaunts ghosts, luckily I totally forgot this, then I listened to it and dear lord gaunts ghosts is probably my favorite book series I've ever read

As an infantry veteran myself I can ABSOLUTELY confirm bricky’s assumption on how we would react to the “shore leave” section of the book. I’ve had my buddies read it and we all agree, that part of the book gave us a good laugh with a “yup, I’ve been there”
I hope they talk someday about Titanicus
dude you guys would love the deathwatch books I think. I hope you guys do a book club got it :D
Could you please do a mega-podcast or something for The Beast Arises series? I know that GW doesn't consider it cannon, but it really shows the more intriguing parts of Imperial Fists history and their successor chapters growth and evolution into what they are in the 41st millennium.
Eyyyy I had already decided to reread Soul Haunter the day I heard this!
To DK's point about the Inquisitor's equine face. In Horus Rising the remembrancer from the second chapter comments on the captain of the tenth company Loken, saying that he, like all Astartes, have horse like faces.
Could you guys do an episode over the imperial knights / titans. I feel like that would be fun to nerd out over
