The hunters have become the hunted. The Night Lords flee to the dark fringes of the Imperium to escape their relentless pursuers - the aeldari of Craftworld Ulthwé. Their flight takes them to the carrion world of Tsagualsa, where their primarch died and their Legion was broken. There, history will repeat itself as a deadly assassin stalks the shadows, and the Night Lords are drawn into a battle they are destined to lose.
Written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Narrated by Andrew Wincott.

Personally love when Talos tells Variel to save the gene seed and Variel rips off the flayed face on his shoulder, showing the Nightlords symbol and saying "I am a son of the 8th Legion and I will die with my brothers on that worthless rock below." Nice little character growth. He started as sort of the "guy who tagged along," swapping sides instead of actually JOINING the 8th. Even the others were like "he's not from Nostramo, he doesn't even have our gene seed, he's not one of us." By the end though he was full 8th legion, willing to fight and die not just with Talos, but the Nightlords as a whole.

The terminator armor was found in a short story called The Core that takes place between book 2 and 3, Deltrian had to fuck around with it a lot. There was also a short story called Throne of Lies that takes place between books 1 and 2, that doesn't give them any goodies, but it has some good moments.

I mean I dunno, it was what, a couple dozen Night Lords at best and they slaughtered hundreds of Eldar. Stating how their basic warriors were little bitches barely worth the effort.
The only really terrifying one was the Phoenix Lord, for obvious reasons. And even she was killed, in the end, by the collective efforts of like 5 astartes (arguably one, because the only part that really even mattered was Talos getting stabbed on purpose to blow himself up)

Usually I just lurk, but felt the need to comment saying thanks for introducing this series to me. I was a bit sceptical with the first book as it felt a bit disjointed, more like a series of loosely connected events rather than a plot. But the second book was so good as soon as I finished the first thing I did was purchase the third.
I loved the insight into what would have otherwise been one note edge lords. And Talos was a great lead, moments of tragedy ("I wanted to be a hero") mixed with the brutality of the Nightlords(his spiral into fucking crazy in book 3).
My only real complaint was Octavia's and Septimius' relationship. Warhammer writers should be banned from writing romantic relationships. Octavia had more chemistry with Talos, a sexless space marine. But that may be me being picky.
Anyway can't wait to read more about the Night Lords now. This book activated the dumb bitch part of my brain that all women and gay men have that makes them obsessed with psychopaths. So thanks for that Bricky

For Bricky, here's how Phoenix lords work: Normal exarchs become trapped on their path of whatever shrine and their souls inhabit the armor they wear (via soulstones, that's why exarchs are covered in bling). The Pheonix lords are similar but more intense, the souls of the original phoenix lords were so strong that they essentially use their armor as a soulstone, when an eldar aspect warrior puts on the armor of their aspect's phoenix lord they literally become inhabited by that Phoenix Lord's soul. They're reborn in new bodies because their aspect warriors put on their armor and essentially just become the next vessel, with the exception of Maugen Ra (the dark reaper Phoenix Lord) who just hasn't ever died in the last ten thousand years or so.

They did too good a job with the evil, I was rooting for telemion so hard. Their justification for the slaughter of a planet was so childish, not to mention how one-sided it was. Then they run from their well deserved justice to go think up something worse! Excellent Villain writing, excellent trilogy.

RIP .Uzas. our favourite semi khorne berserker 😭

I kinda wonder if part of Xarl's death is sort of meant to clear the way for Jain Zar. If Xarl is around for that fight, then he really is the "dedicated melee guy" and it would naturally gravitate towards a duel between the two. Killing off Xarl earlier lets you turn the Jain Zar encounter into more of a horror movie for the night lords - no one in the squad can match her, and so they get picked off one by one, and it's only by whittling her down bit by bit through constant sacrifice and little phyrric victories that they can actually beat her.

Talos could have summoned the Tyranids with the screech. If not to the galaxy then at least to the local area. Alternatively the shadow in the warp could stop the screech.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the offhand way they mentioned Lucoryphus Chaos corruption. He takes his helmet off and someone says he looks like a drowned corpse, how is he still alive. To which he responds that he doesn't know, then latyer after being killed he is just back with no explaination. Nurgle taint.

This may just have been me misreading his intentions, but did anyone else get the idea that when Cyrion told Talos to not harvest his geneseed, it wasn’t just him wanting to be done with the Long War, but a recognition and secret admittance to how deep his corruption had spread? That not carrying on was an act of atonement for his betrayal of his brother?

  • @Ruggedtoaster
    @Ruggedtoaster Před rokem

The thing with first claw is they are brothers not friends. they stay together for the sake of being something, the idea that even they have to believe in something or why do anything so they put their “faith” in each other. So Xarl doesn’t like Talos, but he loves him as much as something like him can love anything. He is bitter and broken in all the same ways, they joined the legion for the same reasons. In their own ways they are exemplars of the eighth legion.

The terminator armors they get from a short story called "The core". They went to a space hulk for some bullshit, a bunch of Nick Kyme's Salamanders went to the same space hulk. Both parties got dunked on by genestealers. First claw just looted the Salamanders' corpse for the armors.
