    Kinda love the bit after Ruven is killed, when Talos orders Octavia to enter warp space, she salutes him with her fist over her heart like the nightlords do to each other, before changing to a regular curtsey. She always thought of herself as the prisoner, the slave of Talos, but in that brief moment she WAS a navigator, doing her job out of loyalty instead of survival.

  • @steweygrrr
    @steweygrrr Před 3 lety +198

    To be fair to Octavia she was only used to using pre-established, stable Warp routes guided by the Astronomican but was being made to guide the ship renegade style which was more like going white water rafting in an inflatable beach boat at night and the water was full of bears, sharks and bearsharks. The whole book was amazing despite that though.
    Two minor things though: _ackshully_ a plasma pistol would in no way breach the hull of the ship on account of it being several metres thick and made of a material capable of deflecting fuckhuge chunks of metal going at a significant fraction of the speed of light. Secondly *what the actual fuck, Bricky!?* What kind of subhuman degenerate monster puts the milk in first!?

    Ruvan (don't know how his name is spelled, Ruevan?) was absolutely fucking killing me this book. After that great speech while he was captured, parts of which were so resonant with the Night Lords plight that Talos would carry it with him into the future, he reverts right back into being a complete shitbag when freed. Then while Talos is growing more furious watching Malcarius be wheeled on to the Echo of Damnation, Ruvan just pops up in front of him like a cartoon character like "Brother! Look! I lived! Surely, this is a sign that we are meant to be together." Then after ALL that, he deludes himself into thinking HE now runs the ship. The newly obtained Night Lord vessel. Him, the traitor to the Night Lords. He's acting like himself becoming the next Exalted is a given so it's all the funnier when he meets up with the other Night Lords and goes "So, what now brothers?" and they all just give him a dead stare. I don't think a book has ever gotten me to laugh at someone being disemboweled before so good job, Blood Reaver.

    One of the best details in the book for me is when Vandred regains control and talks to the crew. I particularly liked the little chat between Xarl and Mercutian, discussing the merits, past and future of the legion.
    And the ending where Talos does the same thing as at the end of the previous book, where both times he makes a little speech before/while executing a guy by sword through mouth. In that particular it was absolutely the smart thing to do, and it's the kind of situation where main characters almost never do that smart thing. It's not quite a subversion of expectation, because it makes perfect sense for the character, but it's a subversion of the cliché.

    I've read through all the omnibus and a question keeps niggling in the back of my head regarding Talos, is he on the spectrum? I ask this as some with aspbergers but they way Talos talks, how everyone describes him as literal, and especially when we got to see his childhood gave me flashbacks to similar experiences and things said about me. Maybe I'm just inferring into it but I was curious if anyone got the same vibe.

      @Jormyyy Před 3 lety +1

      I have aspergers too! I wonder things like this when reading or watching media all the time, if the character is intentionally on the spectrum or not. I'm like 99% sure Sarah in the movie Labyrinth is on the spectrum. I know we're not supposed to project disabilities onto people who may not actually have it but it is difficult when yoy recognize all of the signs they might have it.
      Anyways, uh, yea, considering how well and different these books are from other Warhammer novels, Talos might intentionally be on the spectrum.

      Technically all Astartes are on the spectrum when it comes to interpreting emotions other than rage but yeah Talos in particular really gives me a similar reaction.

      @jacobevans489 Před 3 lety +3

      Nah dude I mean I get the appeal and stuff for folk in your lot to resonate with them and feel they are. But all Astartes are kinda like that, just depends on how serious they were before the change and legion from which they hail. The transformation into a space marine kinda kills most of their emotions. Along with chemical castration...it really makes them emotionally detached from others outside of blind loyalty to their cause and "brothers". Some overcome it and depending on the primarch that is the father of their legion or chapter the affects can be greater or lesser. But most space marines are like him. Hell just look at the Imperial Fists or Iron Hands. A lot of Ultra Marine Chapters and pretty sure the Space Sharks *don't know how to spell their proper name* are similar.

    My favourite part about Vandread showing his humanity before his death was that unlike the exalted or a lot of other night lords he used the names of the crew on board. (Specifically addressed someone on bridge by name instead of title or what they did) which was pretty cool.

      Magic spoon can be gotten almost everywhere. Majorkill just did a sponsorship for them too and he lives in Australia. I'm pretty sure the adeptus boys are in cali. And one of my favorite comedians in New York (chiseled adonis) and of course the man the myth the legend, the American gangster, the biggest arms in west linn Oregon, the undefeated undisputed chael sonnen. All of these folks have done a magic spoon sponsor, I may actually have to try some myself. Any time a pro athlete, a Buff comedian, a Buff nerd, and a thicc nerd (sorry bricky) all agree it's prolly legit.

    familiar with this fanfic called Dornian Heresy?
    - Guilliman and the Ultramarines are separatist from the Imperium, since they're unhindered by the "don't invent" thing, they stalemated with the Imperium
    - Ferrus and his marines were infected by Necron living metal (space marine x Necron)
    - Ssnguinius became Nurgle's daemon prince
    - Corax mutates to a raven demon prince of Tzeenth
    -Jaghatai turned to a centaur demon prince of Slaanesh
    -Russ is a werewolf daemon prince of Khorne
    -Vulkan is Malal's daemon prince
    -the Imperial Fist became the Black Legion while the Sons of Horus became the Black Templars (Abaddon and Sigismund swapped - Abby changed the name since Horus failed the Emperor)

    The night lords trilogy is a brilliant example of why chaos hasn't succeeded in destroying the imperium. The nl have almost no one left, but still squabble and kill each other over petty bs. The taint of chaos inevitably ruins any plan

    I feel like Octavia gets unfairly dragged in this episode. what Bricky sees as a crutch in the unpredictability of her warp travel, I see as set up and payoff.
    The first instance establishes Octavia as unfamiliar with navigating without the Astronomican, but it also establishes the Covenant of Blood as a character in its own right - a proud vessel that has its own ideas on how to navigate the warp. It’s a trained beast, but one that demands respect from its navigator.
    So when Octavia tries to jump the Echo of Damnation, she finds a very different vessel - it’s described as an abused horse. And from everything I’ve heard about horses, that feels pretty apt - it’s a wild, unpredictable beast that will give even an experienced trainer a lot of pause.
    It may be a sister ship to the Covenant of Blood, but its machine spirit is a completely different animal. The ships literally talk to the navigators with active intelligence.
    Plus it’s also warp-corrupted to the point it makes Octavia puke. Given how universally bad it is in 40k to deal with warp-corrupted tech, the fact that Octavia managed to get the Echo of Damnation to the rendezvous point at all should be a feat of impressive resolve and willpower.
