This is why I stopped using Bank of America while I was in college. I was charged a "maintenance fee" which then would drop my account below zero, and then I would get hit with an overdraft fee.
Same here 🙋🏽♀️. I peeped B of A's game in college, too, and went straight to Crocker Bank (that should tell you how ancient I am 😂). 💰💵
Happened with me too with BofA when I was in school. They reordered my transactions, charged me 7 overdraft fees, when there should’ve been one fee. I escalated and got them to fix it, and turn off overdraft.
Have u tried the Credit Union?
@@niravrasengupta7374 I have a credit union account also.
YES!!! Same issue here as well. I hated BoA.
It's hard to explain to people who have come from money how expensive it is to be poor.
PREACH!
I knew a girl in college whose dad owned a Gas Station in Greece, perhaps more, I don't know. She didn't need a job because her father paid her tuition here, bought her a used car, paid her rent (but she had roommates). One of her 2 roommates was poor and didn't have enough money to (do whatever) so Maria said; "Just go to the bank and GET some money.".
Seriously, and most people who don't deal with this think it's something YOU'RE doing with your bad choices and not something being done to you through misfortune and greed.
Time to start robbing from the rich and giving to yourself.
I missed a payment once that was set up to go out automatically, even though I was nowhere near my credit limit. They charged me for the failed payment. I phoned them up and they admitted it was their mistake and refunded me the charge. A month later, I get a letter saying my credit limit is being reduced because I missed a payment. Phoned them up and they said they couldn't do anything because it's all done automatically. So I cancelled my credit card on the same phone call. Funny though that if I miss a payment, they can fine me, but if the bank misses a payment that I've set up, I don't get to fine them.
In the UK, they introduced a law that they can't charge more than it costs them to inform you. So basically the cost of an automated letter.
Ive heard that too, “We didn’t want to embarrass you.” I was like, “Embarras me.”
Yup I didn’t sign up for it!
Always thought the gov should force banks to provide the option to just decline the charge if there isn't enough to cover the charge. For people who want overdraft fees, let them keep them. For others, let them change it. It can be a real disaster for people in precarious financial positions and is so exploitative.
That already exists of (some) banks
I was a member of a credit union that did this. Banks want to make as much money as possible, though. 😒
These fees are EXACTLY the reason I stopped using reg banks...400$ in overdraft fees..I barely made enough to get by..automatic drafts that some places required me to have would beat my checks going in..so ridiculous they would let the fees continue to grow with the obvious lack of $ going in!!
How else will they make their money? Fees are how they make the bulk of their money. Considering all the loans banks give out are bonds from other people's bank accounts
@pharaoh6977 Overdraft fees are absolutely not how banks make most of their money. Chase made a profit $41.3B just last quarter. Overdraft fees are a tiny portion of that profit
Overdraft fees: You are poor, so we are going to take more money away from you.
That's how the rich get richer.
Capitalism!
Sooo true
Lets be honest, that is just capitalism.
@@ReticentEcho Have fun not spending that money you don't have if you need to choose between housing, healthcare or food.
As a person who saw the introduction of overdraft fees, I so relate to this story! I lost a couple of bank accounts because the bank charged overdraft fees and then more daily fees when I didn't pay in a specific timeframe! There were times when they even held deposits causing more fees! It was such a scam.
I was hoping someone else would say they remembered the invention of all these fees.
Overdraft Fees can kick off a *brutal* chain reaction. There is a 2nd chance for Banks to try again, the customer can be charged (a maximum of) 2 times for the same check. THEN the payee of the check is charged for the returned check, so that's usually passed on to the person writing the check (if you're keeping track, that's 3 separate charges for one bad check).
I worked at a Bank before college, I know how evil they can be and they do it to the people who usually don't have time to fight back or don't know what is being done to them. It's all about the profits.
I still don't understand why banks of all corporations are so bad at economics. I mean, if you're really hurting for money, take it from those who have it. The average corporation would sooner try to sell a Cadillac to a hobo than to a rich guy with a blank check.
Simple. Rich people are more likely to lawyer up.
They're not hurting for money. They're greedy. They want it ALL.
Best about banks is that they are allowed to scam you especially if you are broke. And when a bank goes broke because they gambled with money, the government comes in and helps the bank with your tax money.
@@TheHistorySoldier About buying a cadillac?
@@christophermorin9036 Then they're bad at being greedy. Why go for the small fry when the big tuna is right there?
I worked at a credit union where I was able to refund overdraft fees without a manager approval.. best believe I refunded every single fee I came across. I would do so many I’d end up getting written up but that didn’t stop me cause eff that classist ish
In the Netherlands the bank gives me credit for almost one month of fixed income. They do charge between 1 and 2% interest per month but that is less than the money I pay for using a ATM in a foreign country.
Our credit union calls this ‘over draft protection’; the way they clear charges vs checks is criminal.
It's BS ,
I had a credit union that started charging acct maintenance fees. So years after I opened an account, they added fees to my "paperless" account. If they informed me it would have been online and probably sent to a discarded email address.
I had less than $300 in the account and I was just letting it sit. Long story short, the maintenance fees cleared out my inactive account and left me with a balance due. I guess I got lucky though b/c they closed the account "for inactivity" when the overdraft for maintenance fees reached $100. Fees they then wrote off on their taxes.
I'd actually forgotten about the account until I drove by the branch one day.
I hope Trevor is getting paid for these reruns
you mean clips?
clips aren’t reruns and I doubt he’s getting anything.
… if they we’re paying him anything, they’d be posting clips of him LESS.
Just bring Travor Noah back
na.
trevor was ok… but john stewart was a whole lot better.
@@claireconover I agree. Though I didn't watch much of John Stewart episodes.
Trevor didn't want the job in the first place. He's not coming back buddy. He's on tour in India soon and living his best life. They're just going to have to choose a new host and move on after the strike is resolved.
I miss Trevor Noah 😢😢😢😢
There’s a list of banks I’ll never use again because of this. I learned the hard way.
When y’all start paying your workers what they’re worth and this strike ends we’re gonna need a “what you missed while we were getting our lives together” segment.
Thank you so much to these cc editors for atleast making old episodes seem like new. It gives us something to watch and we love TDS. I watch reruns but its not the same when the fake news isnt relevant to today or yesterday.
You are sarcasm is the best ❤️❤️
Not to mention ATM FEES!
My friends tease me about going out of my way to go to the bank instead of using the closest ATM. I don’t care. I refuse to pay any super rich, disgustingly greedy bank to make me pay to get my own money. Soon they’ll catch onto me and figure out a way to charge me even if I go directly to the bank. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to do the old mattress thing. The old folks know about the mattress. 😂😂😂. It doesn’t charge.
My Credit Union runs the checks and drafts through at night BEFORE the deposits (such as my paycheck) which is totally backwards and unethical.
I made the mistake of mentioning to a "Customer Service" ska*k which day I get paid, the money has never been in my account early ever since that day.
Once I detailed some crazy overdraft fees, and said the App didn't give an easy way to check deposits etc... I included the the State Attorney Gen on the letter. I got all my money back, no questions asked.
Exactly.. my bank app has this Widget that is supposed to make it easy to check your balance but it only updates maybe twice a day!. I had been able to get into my app via my biometic (iknow..) thumb .. but now THAT isn't working so I have to enter in my looong password which is a hassle. but I was told that I only get charged an overdraft if my balance is negative for 24 hours... but that is a lie.. cause my balance was in the positive yesterday all day until I went to buy something at the store .. It wasn't even 24 hours and I woke up with back to back overdrafts!!! I don't know what triggered that.. There are zero time stamps on my transactions (only a manager can see them).. They often can't figure it out... and get confused.. My boyfriend chastises me about not handling my money responsibly. Of course they are old school and do things totally non electronically.
Funny story. I moved to Aspen Colorado a few years ago (I’m a poor service worker, not a millionaire) and I opened a bank account. The bank I use is located in this valley and the wealthy parts of the Denver area. My bank has ZERO overdraft fees.
Think about that. Take all the time you need. 😂
so what DOES happen if you overdraft? what options do you have? do they allow you to advance the money? How long do you have?
I had a bank do that rearranging trick to me in the early 80s so that's been around for a long time. Fortunately I went to the bank and got it lowered to one fee.
I thought that overdraft fees were normal and that the bank really didn't know how much money was in your account. This was 15 years ago. Then I moved to Asia and if the money is not in the account you can't buy something. At that point in time I realized it's a scam. If Asia can do it America definitely should be able to know how much money is in your account
Corporate America is nothing more than reverse Robin Hood. Talk about hoodlums!
I was not surprised in the least to see Chase right at the beginning of the video. Years back when I was broke (I mean broker than I am now, like..broke, broke. Like when the leftovers smell " , close enough" broke), even when I received money the bank would process all of my out payments, charge me overdraft, and THEN process my deposits. I invented whole new curse words on days like that.
Oh, and on top of that, they knew when I was getting low on cash. so they would keep payments pending for days until they piled up so they could get the whole $105. I miss ING bank.
That's TD Bank North..... criminal the way they crush folks
this is why some purchases hit like 3-4 later on your account
even my bank manager can't figure out why a lot of purchases are pending.. My balance is supposed to account for ALL pending charges... so if it says $4.. that is after all your pendings are even accounted for.. but then he was saying that wasn't always true and retailers do strange things too. I think the online banking USED to be more straight forwardd and direct. NOW they are definitely screweing around a lot more .. holding on to charges.. if you return something they hold on to things.. it is a nightmare.
Doesn't matter if you never opted in, or if you specifically opt out, banks, even credit unions, will charge the fees anyway. You have to fight if it ever happens.
35 dollar fee at Huntington bank for using another bank atm...since you know, its your money but not their atm. Dafuq?
You get charged both by the bank that actually owns the ATM as well as your own bank for not using theirs! The only reason I know this is I have an account that refunds them (limited time/amount per month), but it specifies different limits for each category. It's usually enough to allow 2 per month with no problem, but it was still interesting to find that out!
“So why don’t we just let their account go negative for the amount they overspend?”
“…You’re fired.”
“Roger that.”
I got hit with an overdraft fee and still had money in my account. no new debit, just a random fee showing up.
bank just said that's the way their computer works.
I switched banks the next day.
Much like you get fined for not being able to pay your fine in time.
"Poor people have no dignity and don't deserve to live." - The Capitalist Manifesto or something.
Missing Trevor
*I'm more concerned about the writers and actors getting what they want than the content of any of my favorite networks.
The discovery channel is the only place I can watch anything and not feel guilty for encouraging the stubborn network executives to continue producing content.*
Started a long time before 1990s; at least since 1970s. Now you can get charged for a negative balance. My bank of 25 years did it for 21 cents (and didn't pay the debit)
And the bank charges daily fees on overdrawn accounts.
I always wondered how bank of america charged me so many times of overdraft fees..this doesnt exist in any other country ive lived in an ld didnt even know such nonsense existed! They took away my entire months rent as a student and when i asked them why they didnt inform me, they said i would lve been emailed (at a time when i didnt have a smart phone amd was traveling)..and the guy handed me a 10 dollar starbucks card..i wish i had the guts to fight it out..i didnt know i could have gotten them to waive it off.. i was just afraid to get in trouble while studying in a foreign land..
back in the '90s, I had an overdraft of 10 cents.
I went to the bank, argued the charge. they said my "back up" credit card wouldn't accept a 10 cent charge.
I said I was DONE - "I'm cancelling my account"
(I _might_ have used more stern language in that moment ... but you get the gist, I think)
they said I COULDN'T close the account unless I paid the 10 cents.
I've been depositing a single penny into the account every fifth year - just to keep it from reverting to the state.
it now exists as "minus 4 cents"
Yooooo your back I can start watching again
And I'm counting the days till the 13th to overdraft a couple hundred to make it till the 23rd.
They wait till your paycheck is spent before they show expenditures. How can you keep up if you can't balance day to day or hour by hour?
I was told I could opt out of the overdraft system but I was told that I'd still get charged the 35 then it would still just get denied
Same..
"ain't NOBODY more gangster than the bank..." truth.
Love broke bank segment😂
lol. im imagining licking the ATM
Legal theft.
If the rich commit crimes, they have ways to evade accountability. Just look at Trump!
AOC said the best way to avoid overdraft fees is to just switch the keg below the tap😅😅😅😅
Old memories 😂
Lets be honest, the best is to not buy stuff with money you don't have. But even then, how they order withdrawals just so you pay more fees, that is actually criminal.
My bank will instantly process debit card transactions and so at any moment if I want to KNOW how much money I have, in order to not spend what I don't have, I can instantly check.
The problem is "ACH" transactions which use the bank account and routing number and aren't done through a debit card.
Those can take days to process and the bank totally knows it's happening but doesn't tell YOU it's happening until they randomly decide "okay it's happened." How in 2023 it takes days for numbers to move across the internet, I have no idea. If a debit card transaction can happen instantly, why are ACH transactions so freakin' slow?
So you'll look at your bank account and see $100 but actually you only have $25 because a $75 transaction is 'pending' AND THE BANK KNOWS IT but doesn't tell YOU about it so you think you have $100 but you don't.
Then you spend $26 and suddenly the entire world falls apart and you owe the bank hundreds of dollars more than you actually spent on anything.
Overdraft charges should be illegal. You should only owe what you actually spent, and if the bank doesn't want to let you spend what you don't have on credit, then they should just refuse the charge.
my account is in the red because of the overdrafts!!! they put me into a negative state!. I didn't even reaslise the changes they had made to my account until I got hit with a bunch. I am supposed to have 24 hours to get my account into the positive.. but that is not true.. and they are manipulating something cause I check my balance everyday. BUT they do rearrange things wierdly and by MIDNIGHT something will go thrugh adn mess up your account. Even the managers can't figure it out.
so, my bank also does these advances.. and for a small fee you can advance yourself some money. The fee is actually not that bad.. highest was around 5 dollars. (it was a percentage). I mostly have the money to pay the big bills which always goes first but things happen. You need gas, an unexpected whatever... So what I would prefer to happen is to have the bank warn you, YOU on't have enough enough... do you want to advance yourself.. and you would advance the amount for a lower fee.
Capitol One charges over 10¢ to insure every $1 you owe.
Oh man filling your gas tank for 30$ 🤣 The culture shock when moving to Europe could cause heart failure..
Yeah, Wells Fargo does the reordering thing a lot.
You can elect to not have overdraft protection on your account. It is the law that they provide you with that option. Pay attention people!
They took my option to overdraft since I would avoid making purchases over $5 or going more then $12 negative, plus I would pay back the money the next day if I was going to get hit with the $34 overdraft fee. Now I don't have the option and I never opted out. 😅
Trevor Noah is needed back!
When Trevor left, did he also take the whole country's writers with him?
Banks are still manipulating how money draws from your account through card authorizations that occur at places like hotels and gas pumps
I am surprised how people they don't know how much money they have in their bank account , so they will not purchase more if they don't have the money to begin with!
Tell that to a single parent that knows their paycheck clears tomorrow but the baby needs formula today.
honestly though, if you really have to pay for something and are willing to pay the 35 fee, say like electric bill or rent, it's a small price to pay. because not having power in 100 degree weather is far more costly than 35$. that is of course till the banks get too greedy and charge you more than you can ever pay, so there needs to be a balance somewhere.
We miss you Trevor!
wait... is it Desi's voice in the broke bank part?
This is truly evil!!!!
Finally they will end that overdraft scam
allowing you to pay more than you have is ridiculous
that should not be possible. what a backyard country the US is.
Donald Glover is the ATM?
The fee should not be greater than the cost of declining the payment.
Alternately you should be asked for confirmation to pay the fee and have the negative balance be covered.
People need to manage their finances. Period. Stop blaming it on the banks.
This is why I say, "banks are for rich people". I have a credit union account.
Trevor's back??!! 👀👀😩 oh old episode 😩😩
I could have guessed that was gonna be Georgia
Tell it, Trevor...
I should own the bank from my OD fees!! Ugh!
okay, thank you for not embarrassing me and giving me free money, cause you're not getting that back dude you should have told me I didn't have the funds
I miss Trevor …😢
How about... if you don’t have money, don’t spend. It is not that hard to keep track.
Is this a reupload or has Trevor come back?
Literally Wells Fargo
Capital One 360 online banking NO FEES...I LOVE THEM...
Newest crimes companies are committing are charging you a $5.00 fee when you pay a bill in cash. This is upsurd there will definitely be a lawsuit especially when most elderly people don't use phone apps or computers.
Most places charge fees on credit/debit card purchases now too.
So what we’re seeing is The Daily Show is still upset about breaking up with Trevor
They have no new content due to writers striking.
She blacked out!!!
This has been going on longer than the 90s. And overdraft fees are not optional.
5:30 I'm Joe and I approve this message
Navy Federal Credit Union has been doing this to active duty and retirees for too long..!! Help US please.
And this is why I went with venmo. I cant afford a bank account.

Trevor Noah is back???
Close your big bank accounts, please visit your local credit union and give them your business. Credit unions aren't allowed to do this.
-Compliance Officer
Credit Unions have something similar called "Courtesy Pay." Be sure to tell them to deactivate this feature.
@dahhmlife It's not always called 'Courtesy Pay', it depends on the credit union. Most credit unions have an overdraft program. What they can't do is structure transactions to maximize fees.
They also can't automatically offer this service. You have to opt in on a separate form, containing only the overdraft info (it can't be combined/ buried in fine print).
They also hold cash payroll two three days you cannot make this up
the reason they call a debit card as such coz using it will make you go in debt.
At least they can't charge you a fee for the overdraft fee hitting your empty account.
To think it could be worse.
I'm guessing that's sarcasm?
Wu Tang Financial might have an opinion here.
"We have a duty to optimize our shareholder's investment, therefore all this is right!!" (sarcastic)

It's not stealing to take back money stolen from you
Banking in South Africa is superior 😊
I had an ATM give me the incorrect amount once and I withdrew to get a truck. Then bought here and there and had 1,600 in overdraft fees. The bank sold me a fresh start loan to pay off my overdraft fees from the malfunctioning machine. Same lady that could waive the fees suggested the loan without saying she could just waive the fees. Even though I had the receipts. After seeing this, I wonder if it was on purpose.
whatever happened with that bill
Or charge you on 31 of month then on first of month
I thought Berniehad a bill for ATM charged but they still charge. Bill need to be enforced.
