Nerves run throughout your legs and arms that travel between all of your soft tissue including connective tissue, muscle, and more. A normal healthy nerve can move smoothly like a piece of string between all the soft tissue.
Sometimes, nerves can lose mobility and this can lead to irritation and increased sensitivity of the nerves. This video demos exercises for the femoral nerve, specifically, that innervates the front parts of the leg.
These exercises can be performed in prone (on your stomach), side-lying, and standing. Check out the videos to learn the appropriate technique and remember to start with a low volume and build up slowly to avoid increasing irritation to the nerve.

Please keep doing more nerve glides. I think it some sort nerve problems . I will be getting mri sometime in January. I’m the one you spoke to before who is 1and half years post op knee replacement and having stiffness and pain

Can you please do more videos on nerve problems post knee replacement surgery? I’ve been to 3 different orthopedic surgeons who can’t find anything wrong. I have pain laterally and sometimes towards the middle

I came across a different demonstration in standing when the hip flexed and the neck is also flexed and looked downward. Which is head flexion and hip flexion combined together.
Yup, this is an appropriate strategy, too… it all depends if you are tensioning one end of the nerve at a time or both ends of the nerve at the same time

You are very welcome, this exercise can potentially be helpful for obturator foramen syndrome.
In the first exercise you flexed the head as you bent the knee but in the other two you seem to extend the head back while you extended the leg back at the same time. I am trying to understand the difference between the sciatic nerve flossing as opposed to femoral nerve flossing. Cause the first one looks like what I saw in other videos called sciatic nerve flossing.
So the first exercise I actually mixed it up... For the nerve flossing, you should flex the neck as you extend the hip and bend your knee and the opposite is to extend the neck as you flex the hip / straighten the knee... For sciatic nerve it travels along the back of the leg, it is tensioned by flexing the hip and straightening the knee such as laying on your back and raising your leg straight up or sitting and straightening the knee and leg out.
Also, if I am doing this right, normally, how long or how many sessions of these exercises would it take for the numbness and burning sensation to disappear? thanks a lot!
I unfortunately can not give you a firm answer with this... this exercise is best used as an adjunct to a comprehensive treatment for your symptoms and concerns

Thanks a lot! What's the physiological reason for doing the prone opposite of the side lying and standing? In the prone you're extending the hip and flexion the neck. In the two other you're extending/flexing in both hip and neck. I'm just trying to understand the mechanism :)
Great catch. So I actually mixed it up a little, but these are both appropriate strategies... So for nerve gliding or nerve flossing hip extension and/or knee flexion should be coupled with neck extension, and hip flexion and/or knee extension should be coupled with neck flexion. With the opposite way... hip extension and/or knee flexion with neck flexion is actually tensioning both sides of the nerve. These sometimes are referred to nerve tensioners where you tension the nerve fully on both sides, and then release tension on both sides (instead of tensioning one side and then the other with the nerve flossing strategy...Let me know if I can help clarify this.

Should you feel anything
@@pikapoo8796 your pain or other symptoms shouldn’t increase significantly from baseline during and after performing. If you do it may a little too intense and you may have to decrease the range of the movement or number of reps you do
In the video, was the prone correct for nerve flossing or was the side lying and standing correct?
the numbness and pain intensifies if I do this. Am I doing it right? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
If the pain intensified and lasts after, this may be too intense for right now. I would hold off on doing this and try some other exercises and movements by consulting with a PT or doctor
is this the same for a diagnosis of saphenous nerve entrapment? thanks
The saphenous nerve is a branch of the femoral nerve so it is likely these exercises may be helpful for this condition. However, always consult with and follow the advice of your personal healthcare providers. Thanks for watching!

Can this be used for Meralgia Parasthetica?
Yes, these exercises could potentially be beneficial for meralgia parasthetica in addition to other therapeutic exercises.
Bro 2 months back. Bike fall on my thigh. I didn't feel any pain. But after some days I feel warmnes in my butt and thigh amd feeling like warm liquid pouring. Now I am not feeling like that but little bit some times. So now I started running everyday in morning from 3 days. But I feel pain in my lower thighs. Also lower back pain . So should I worry about? Or keep running

Hi I just did this again. I’m not doing it everyday but probably should. I’m thinking there is a nerve problem that caused my pain. I’m at a year and half post op knee replacement surgery. I have very good range of motion. I do not think it’s sciatic nerve. But I think some other nerve must have been damaged around the knee. Please post more nerve glides, if you can

I have got lower back pain during very first exercise ( at 2:45 ). Is it normal?
It is not normal but may happen. If this exercise or any are causing pain I recommend not performing until you consult with your own physician or physical therapist.
The first exercise was tension ing from both ends it seemed ? Shouldn't the head move backwards at the same time that tension is put on thigh? Otherwise you put tension from both ends and thus stretching ? I am confused

This video may be helpful, but what you are experiencing is likely stemming from your low back... I would recommend consulting with your doctor to determine the most appropriate treatment interventions for the symptoms you are experiencing.

Iam Asiyah here I had done my both knee replacement surgery now I have pain in my back at l four and l five that's why I have pain in my left left side of hip and thigh please help me and tell me what should I do for it.
I recommend consulting with your personal physical therapist. Oftentimes, there are specific back movements (often back extensions backward) that can be very helpful for pain relief and management in addition to other exercises...but the best course of action depends on your specific symptoms and response to certain exercises and movements so definitely recommend consulting with your personal physical therapist. Obesity is correlated with a lot of negative body changes including the cardiovascular and nervous systems and increased inflammation and joint pain.

I am 1 and half years post op and started having bad pain at a bout 1 year post op . It hurts when I walk. Can you help me. Orthopedic surgeon does not know what to do
Hi, Joan. Sorry to hear this, it is difficult to provided specific advice without a thorough evaluation and understanding of your history with knee pain and knee replacement. I will do my best though to help answer any specific questions you have about treatment, management, or anything else, but your specific course of action best to discuss with your doctor. Have you had imaging or other assessment of the knee since you started having the bad pain?
@@KneeReplacementTherapists I had an MRI in June that was basically normal. I’m going to repeat it June. I had blood tests for infection twice May and then again in November , ESR And CRP. Both times it was very low and did not indicate infection. All X-rays show the prosthesis to be in place correctly
Last X-ray was in 10-2-20
And was normal
ESR was 6 and CRP was1 on 11-11-20
