  • Knee to Know Ep. 119
The nerves in your body have to be able to move throughout the muscles and other soft tissue like a piece of floss. Sometimes this mobility of the nerves can be impacted and the nerve does not move as well.
In these instances, it can lead to irritating and increased sensitivity of the nerves and potentially pain and discomfort.
The purpose of these exercises is to tension one side of the nerve "string" and loosen the other side with alternating movements. This in turns allows the nerve to move like a piece of floss improving mobility and decreasing irritation of the nerves.
It's important to start with low volume of repetitions with these exercises as too much too soon can lead to increased pain and irritation of the nerves. If you notice increased pain, be sure to stop immediately.
It is beneficial to consult with your physical therapist to help you progress with these exercises appropriately.
In this video I demonstrate 4 different ways to perform the nerve flossing or gliding technique for the sciatic nerve, typically the nerve that is the culprit typically with nerve pain in the back part of the leg.

I am 2 week post op. 8:49 Thank you for your all your support…I haven’t been able to sit or sleep because of this pain ,,, since my knee replacement…..why don’t physio or dr tell us this. Would have saved many sleepless nights and not being able to lie down or sleep. I started getting this pain when elevating my leg. Meds didn’t help either. Thank you 🙏

Thank you for watching, I'm glad the videos are helpful. Sometimes the doctors and PT have limited time to fully discuss what to expect after surgery and individuals don't have a fully developed expectations about what it will be like after surgery. Hope you continue to recover and feel better, best wishes!

Appreciate this. I’m three months out of knee replacement surgery and my sciatica is the main problem left. It especially drives me nuts when driving the car as the position of my foot on accelerator starts the aching to occur. Will try these stretches.
    Thanks.

How many times of day should this be done

There is no set amount but typically I would say perform 1 set of 10-15 rep 1 or 2 times per day. Nerves can get aggravated very easily so I don't recommend more than 1-2 sets even if it is feeling good.

You can try these exercises to see if they are able to relieve the pain, but you may well need more personalized assessment and treatment approaches. If your pain persists I would definitely get evaluated by a physical therapist who can provide more specific recommendations to address the pain you are experiencing. Thanks for watching!
