The best part about your videos is the editing. It's great that you show every game you mention: even if it's just for comparison purposes or to illustrate a point. I think Mystic Defender is a wonderful game and has been one of my favorite Genesis games since it came out. It's good to see it get some attention.

Today I rediscovered an old gem Spell Caster for the Sega genesis. I must have easily spent the last 7-8 years lightly prodding my subconcious for the name of that distinct game. Thanks to you guys my mind can finally rest.! -Much respect from your fan Will.
Klonoa is an outstanding game. It's not the first to have 2D movement that warps through the third dimension like that, though. NiGHTS Into Dreams did that in 1996. In fact, Klonoa is very clearly inspired by NiGHTS in a lot of ways: every stage is a dream (or "vision"), they both have a made-up language, the final bosses are very similar, they both sometimes switch to a section where you're flying into the screen and you move around within the borders, the stages end with boss fights that take place in a circular room, etc. I wish more games stole elements from NiGHTS.
Predator 2 was done by a company called TWG did just before I joined them, They'd just wrapped it up and my lead Art Paul Mitchell had done all the graphics for it, we then did the Infamous Wolverine Adamantium Rage :).
Greatest hidden gem of all time is Deception 3; Dark illusion for Playstation 1. Please play this game. I've never seen anyone review it and if I ever come across a copy I will send it to you. This game truly defies genre. Great video by the way!

I agree. They go over so many games I've never heard of and I've been looking into soo many older/overlooked games because of these guys. I also love the humor.
I've played Pocket Fighter, and it's great fun! Like these two had said, one of the best things about it is that the combo animations are rather hilarious. Chun-Li turns into a cheerleader and a policewoman, Lei Lei drops a clock on you, then serves up fried rice, and freaking Akuma becomes a construction worker smacking you with a piece of lumber of all things xD The other one I personally played here is Klonoa. It's true that this game is rather overlooked then, just because it's too cutesy and childish-like for most people, the assumed that the platforming is easy. Heh, try getting to Stage 6 with the vanishing platforms and then say it's easy. Solid platformer, and decent music and artstyle.

I was hoping you'd remember to mention the Klonoa remake on Wii-- and you did! That's one thing I love about you guys. You are always careful to point out remakes or ports to other platforms, or the version that was left in Japan, or whatever. It's always very interesting seeing the differences between the various versions of classic games. Keep up the good work!
One of Jeremy Soule's first games. He is famous for making sound tracks from anything from Total Annihilation, Guild Wars, Skyrim and many other titles, I especially enjoyed his work for Cavedog Entertainment. To be honest though when Chris Taylor went with Square Enix I was kinda meh, But I was never a fan of them and I believe Supreme Commander flopped because of it.
You guys are awesome. Probably the best gaming channel on CZcams. You guys genuinely love the hobby and don't have to resort to obscenities to entertain your audience. I don't always agree with your opinions, but that's okay. I hope you guys get millions of subscribers in the future!
I bought Pocket Fighters immediately after this was posted. So yes, back in 2013. I was going to move "soon" though, so i never unboxed it but put it in the basement. Well, i just moved 2 weeks ago (here in 2020, 7 years later during covid!), and i just found this gem yesterday! I guess now i have to prioritize hooking up the PS stuff now, Thanks Joe!

Landstalker was great, its only flaw was the isometric view, at some of the later sections you would always fall down cos you couldn't judge where you were jumping
Moondog954 I liked the isometric view, for me the only flaw was not knowing where the hell you were half the time. Wandering around the map and wondering if you were going the right way or not lol. Still, something I love having in my genesis collection.
i've always loved Pocket Fighter, from the arcade and all! I had the Japanese home version and did the disc swap trick to get it to work on my PS1....so much fun! i had always remembered Drill Dozer from its review in EGM, but never played it....looks like fun! I've grown to love Mr. Driller series (which, yeah, isn't the same) so maybe i'll love this drill game. :)
I'm glad that you guys mentioned 3D Dot Game Heroes. I took a chance and bought it without knowing anything about it, and I had a smile on my face as soon as the title screen came up. Definitely overlooked.
Great episode fellahs! Here's some overlooked gems, in my opinion: -Car Battler Joe on the GBA. Great mix of mode 7 driving and car customization. Kind of RPG like. -The Terminator for Sega CD. Amazing platformer that follows the look and feel of the first movie and even starts before the movie picks up. Incredible soundtrack is icing on the cake. -Cannon Spike for the Dreamcast was this cool multi-directional shooter that stars Cammy from street fighter.
I was shocked to see Super Chase HQ in there. I thought I was the only one who liked that game. I discovered Drill Dozer when I discovered emulation and had to have the physical copy. I'm gonna give all the other games a go for sure. You guys do such an amazing job sharing truly great games whether they be expensive and rare, or cheap and common. You guys deserve all your success because you're actually good at what you do unlike most who just wanna talk about their collection. Go Game Sack!!!

You had some great picks this episode, but might I recommend a title that seemingly NO ONE has heard of? "Lack of Love" on the Dreamcast is a tremendous title by ex-SquareSoft employees. Consolevania has a great overview of the title on CZcams, but it's still criminally overlooked.
I remember pre ordering 3D Dot Game Heroes on my ps3. I recall being shocked that gamestop only ordered 3 copies cause I thought for sure people would be all over such a great throwback. Its a great Zelda clone that still holds up today.

POCKET FIGHTERS !, i had that game when i was 12, and i dont regret a thing, i love the game, the animation, the combos, the game play, everything, it was my favorite game at the time.
The worst sound that i can remember from a game was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES. The level where you have to swim but its impossible and you keep getting shocked, That sound was SOOOOO annoying.
Ah yes, "Klonoa" that was a great game. I actually got that game from my grandma during a holiday. It holds a special place in my heart, not just because it's a hidden gem, but for it being the last game my grandma gave to me before she past away.

According to wikipedia, super chase hq is based on the third arcade game in the series, Super Chase: Criminal Termination. I haven’t played it, but am going to check it out now thanks to your overview :)
'Spider: The Video Game' on PS1 was a great platformer, in which you control a genetically improved spider that can equip various weapons including rocket launchers and flamethrowers lol, it was also pretty hard but a great challenge.
The most overlooked retro game of all time is..... Metal Marines for the snes it was WAY ahead of its time. One of the few strategy games on the snes and a great one!

Herzog Zwei is a great game by technosoft for genesis. It was way ahead of its time and never got the attention it deserves. Its the first real rts game and the one who inspired westwood studios to make dune 2. Multiplayer was the best part of it, so much fun.
Great video guys always find at least one new game to try from your vids. You guys should do an episode on good games with difficult controls. I think that would be a good one.

I knew that first game looked familiar... The Neverhood came in a set of discs that either came along with my dad's Gateway 98 PC back in the day, or that my dad had prior (along with flight simulator 95 and/or 98, and Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far). I must have been 4-6 years old at the time. I always wondered what it and the other games were called and searched for years, but could never find out. Now, because of you, I have learned that these games (aka my pc gaming childhood) were on the Microsoft Game Packs for windows in '96 & '97 (of which gateway purchased certain titles and made their own set to give away to people whom bought their pc's), and i now know the names that have eluded me for almost 2 decades. Neverhood, Close combat: ABTF, Age of Empires, Flight sim..... I'm about to go back to being a 4 year old again. Seriously, from the bottom of my heart... thank you so fucking much game sack!!!!
YES! I literally just bought Mystic Defender yesterday! And Pocket Fighter last week. I was a bit surprised to see Air Diver, but maybe I'll give it another go. It's in my stack of Megadrive games that don't get any attention, if I recall. Another great episode, gentlemen!
19:06 Pandemonium (also a 2.5D platformer) by Crystal Dynamics was released on October 31st 1996 for the PS1. Its the oldest 2.5D Platformer I could dig up in my memory, maybe someone else remembers an even older one. Klonoa was released in 1997, so that's definitely more "recent".

I'm biased because I love the series, but it seems like everyone knows that "The Valkyria Chronicles" series is incredible fun, but not a lot of people I know have ever played any of them.
Rising Zan for PS1 is an awesome gem for the system. It's so damn wacky and over the top, it's impossible not to laugh. A great satire of Western and Japanese stereotypes, with some kickass hack and slash (and gunslinging) action. Get it now!!!
Hmmm....I wonder if Dave is right? Is Klonoa the first 2.5D game? It was definitely one of the first. Is Klonoa older than Pandemonium? What about Nights Into Dreams for the Saturn? Should we consider Bug or Clockwork Knight as 2.5D games? It's really an interesting question, especially considering how small the genre was when it first started. When the 2.5D style of games released, the industry was pushing for full 3D experiences. I remember thinking that people were going to go wild for games like Klonoa. Particularly as it brought the two most prominent styles of gaming together. It was like having your cake and eating it too. I was wrong... very few 2.5D games hit during the 5th generation.
Two games that I think where overlooked are Shrek 2 and Shrek 2 Beg for Mercy on the game boy advance. These are very good platformers that I have enjoyed a lot. Shrek 2 has some puzzle elements with using more than one character at once and Shrek 2 beg for mercy has some really enjoyable enemy fights with Puss in Boots having many cool sword attacks. You can find these games for rather cheap and they are definately ones to be tried out. (:
As soon as i saw the first game you said Skullmonkeys, that game is bloody amazing. I remember playing it before i had my own PS1, i mostly remember the unique music.
Musashi: Samurai Legend for the PS2, I don't know of anyone else who's played that game. Also Alien vs. Predator for the Jaguar 64, a brilliant game that went down with the system it was on.
One game I always thought was overlooked was Topgear 3000 on the SNES. It was released late in the life cycle, but had many great things. You may not have been able to change which car you drove, but you could change the color and upgrade it in the championship mode. I showed it to a friend who had never even heard of it and loved it. This was only a few weeks ago.
Mystic Defender is giving me some pretty nostalgic vibes. I think I must have played at least part of it back when it was new. My memories of it seem both vague and vivid at the same time. Kinda confusing.
Those girlish clothes from the Japanese version of Mystic Defender seems to be a cultural Japanese thing. It resembles Tokyo Babylon's Subaru's clothes, when he dresses up to exorcise spirits. I remember his profession was called "Omnioji" or something like that (I'm too lazy to google only for this comment). Anyway thanks for the tip, never heard of that game before
Jade Cocoon on PS1 was overlooked, it's a pokemon type game where you can merge the creatures together combining their looks, type, magic and abilities. Has some great characters, bosses and voice acting plus the graphics were great for it's time. The game also features and endless corridor at the end where you keep adventuring through different forests, battle/capture minions, battle more bosses and collect boss skins. Really fun and addictive for any RPG/Pokemon game fans.

I missed the boat when Alien VS. Predator was in the arcades and really would like to see what you guys say about it. Drill Dozer was a phenomenal game. That and Astro boy were my two favorites of the GBA.

Secret of Evermore. I never see this on any lists and I liked it more than secret of mana. Its for the snes and the graphics were amazing.

'Spider: The Video Game' on PS1 was a great platformer, in which you control a genetically improved spider that can equip various weapons including rocket launchers and flamethrowers lol, it was also pretty hard but a great challenge.
The most overlooked retro game of all time is.....
Metal Marines for the snes it was WAY ahead of its time.
One of the few strategy games on the snes and a great one!

Cobra was originaly a manga. I grew up watching the Cobra anime, really cool stuff. The first episode reminds me of Total Recall.
Herzog Zwei is a great game by technosoft for genesis. It was way ahead of its time and never got the attention it deserves. Its the first real rts game and the one who inspired westwood studios to make dune 2. Multiplayer was the best part of it, so much fun.
Great video guys always find at least one new game to try from your vids. You guys should do an episode on good games with difficult controls. I think that would be a good one.
Thank you for doing Mystic Defender. I had Spellcaster for the Sega Master System and never knew it had a sequel. I guess I'll be adding that to my wish list of old games.

Haven't even seen the rest of the video yet, but... thank you, thank you for Mystic Defender! :D It was the second Mega Drive game I owned, and when I go into trips down memory lane, it still holds up as a solid action platformer to this day =)
I knew that first game looked familiar... The Neverhood came in a set of discs that either came along with my dad's Gateway 98 PC back in the day, or that my dad had prior (along with flight simulator 95 and/or 98, and Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far). I must have been 4-6 years old at the time. I always wondered what it and the other games were called and searched for years, but could never find out.
Now, because of you, I have learned that these games (aka my pc gaming childhood) were on the Microsoft Game Packs for windows in '96 & '97 (of which gateway purchased certain titles and made their own set to give away to people whom bought their pc's), and i now know the names that have eluded me for almost 2 decades. Neverhood, Close combat: ABTF, Age of Empires, Flight sim..... I'm about to go back to being a 4 year old again.

YES! I literally just bought Mystic Defender yesterday! And Pocket Fighter last week. I was a bit surprised to see Air Diver, but maybe I'll give it another go. It's in my stack of Megadrive games that don't get any attention, if I recall. Another great episode, gentlemen!
19:06 Pandemonium (also a 2.5D platformer) by Crystal Dynamics was released on October 31st 1996 for the PS1. Its the oldest 2.5D Platformer I could dig up in my memory, maybe someone else remembers an even older one. Klonoa was released in 1997, so that's definitely more "recent".
I remember playing pocket fighters with my brother. It is a really fun game. I recommend! Love your older videos hahahaha

Everyone should try Klonoa! It was a BIG part of my childhood! Don't misjudge it because of its childish graphics, it's a LOAD of fun.

I'm biased because I love the series, but it seems like everyone knows that "The Valkyria Chronicles" series is incredible fun, but not a lot of people I know have ever played any of them.
Rising Zan for PS1 is an awesome gem for the system. It's so damn wacky and over the top, it's impossible not to laugh. A great satire of Western and Japanese stereotypes, with some kickass hack and slash (and gunslinging) action.

Hmmm....I wonder if Dave is right? Is Klonoa the first 2.5D game? It was definitely one of the first. Is Klonoa older than Pandemonium? What about Nights Into Dreams for the Saturn? Should we consider Bug or Clockwork Knight as 2.5D games? It's really an interesting question, especially considering how small the genre was when it first started.
When the 2.5D style of games released, the industry was pushing for full 3D experiences. I remember thinking that people were going to go wild for games like Klonoa. Particularly as it brought the two most prominent styles of gaming together. It was like having your cake and eating it too. I was wrong... very few 2.5D games hit during the 5th generation.
I love how you guys poke fun at yourselves in these videos, like with the filler bit. :P
Two games that I think where overlooked are Shrek 2 and Shrek 2 Beg for Mercy on the game boy advance. These are very good platformers that I have enjoyed a lot. Shrek 2 has some puzzle elements with using more than one character at once and Shrek 2 beg for mercy has some really enjoyable enemy fights with Puss in Boots having many cool sword attacks.
You can find these games for rather cheap and they are definately ones to be tried out. (:

As soon as i saw the first game you said Skullmonkeys, that game is bloody amazing. I remember playing it before i had my own PS1, i mostly remember the unique music.
Musashi: Samurai Legend for the PS2, I don't know of anyone else who's played that game. Also Alien vs. Predator for the Jaguar 64, a brilliant game that went down with the system it was on.
Matrilwood most people who liked Brave Fencer Musashi hate Samurai Legend, sadly.
One game I always thought was overlooked was Topgear 3000 on the SNES. It was released late in the life cycle, but had many great things. You may not have been able to change which car you drove, but you could change the color and upgrade it in the championship mode. I showed it to a friend who had never even heard of it and loved it. This was only a few weeks ago.
Mystic Defender is hard as hell.
Also, Drill Dozer definitely has that Game Freak GBA sound with a bunch of brass.
Mystic Defender is giving me some pretty nostalgic vibes. I think I must have played at least part of it back when it was new. My memories of it seem both vague and vivid at the same time. Kinda confusing.
Those girlish clothes from the Japanese version of Mystic Defender seems to be a cultural Japanese thing. It resembles Tokyo Babylon's Subaru's clothes, when he dresses up to exorcise spirits. I remember his profession was called "Omnioji" or something like that (I'm too lazy to google only for this comment). Anyway thanks for the tip, never heard of that game before
Nice one. Got a few of these, Skullmonkeys , Klonoa, 3D Dot Heroes.. great games. Skullmonkeys is worth it for the music and cut scenes alone :)
Jade Cocoon on PS1 was overlooked, it's a pokemon type game where you can merge the creatures together combining their looks, type, magic and abilities. Has some great characters, bosses and voice acting plus the graphics were great for it's time. The game also features and endless corridor at the end where you keep adventuring through different forests, battle/capture minions, battle more bosses and collect boss skins.
Really fun and addictive for any RPG/Pokemon game fans.
Mystic Defender was the first game I got for my Genesis back in they day. Beat it like a hundred times.

Good episode here. I really enjoy these overlooked gems episodes as they showcase some great talent(s) that has gotten lost in the shuffle. Any chance you'll cover some (more) lost arcade gems? I missed the boat when Alien VS. Predator was in the arcades and really would like to see what you guys say about it. A game you covered that was like this is Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and I just loved watching that review. Cheers, guys. I'm a fan of your consistent good work and obvious passion for great gaming.
